“This has both our names on it”: Viewing Fleet and Clara’s relationship in Victoriocity through a queerplatonic lens
TL;DR: By Season 3 of Victoriocity, Fleet and Clara have developed a committed emotional partnership that certainly moves beyond the purely professional. Whilst very much operating as a duo, they can be interpreted as often rejecting or subverting romance-coded elements in their relationship, instead embracing a unique dynamic that can be read as resonating with the concept of a queerplatonic relationship (QPR).
Buckle up because this is over 2,500 words long! If you'd rather read it as a document, you can access it here: Fleet & Clara QPR Google Doc
Disclaimer: I'm not making any claims about creator intent, nor about how anyone else ought to interpret Fleet and Clara's dynamic. It's also worth acknowledging that queerplatonic relationships are inherently defined by the people in them and any attempt to apply such terminology to a story set in 1887 is obviously anachronistic (although whether that should matter when said story also contains a cyborg Queen Victoria is up for debate).
With that said, if we define a QPR as a committed personal partnership which is not entirely captured by the typical expectations of either friendship or romance but may contain some elements typically associated with either (other definitions of QPRs are available), I enjoy viewing Fleet and Clara's relationship through a QPR lens, and I want to talk about some of the reasons why I think this reading works.
***Spoilers for all three seasons of Victoriocity and the novel High Vaultage***
Detective duos
Even before we actually get into Fleet and Clara's particular bond, detective / crime-solving duos as a general concept have QPR energy to me (which probably predisposed me to this interpretation). It's the Holmes-and-Watson legacy. It's the use of the word 'partner' in a non-romantic context (‘associate’ or ‘companion’ can also serve a similar purpose). It's the intense trust and reliance on each other. It's the sense of being a recognisable pair, always appearing together, known as a duo, with skills and attributes that complement each other.
Romantic assumptions
Moving on to Fleet and Clara specifically, one aspect of their relationship that can be read through a QPR lens is how they are often in situations where other people believe or imply that there is a romantic relationship between them. Sometimes this is a deliberate strategy of theirs, and sometimes it’s imposed upon them by others. But I’d argue that there’s never a point where they both simultaneously seem entirely comfortable with that romantic narrative for their relationship. Usually one of them will actively deny the assumption or react negatively to the implication:
When Mrs Hampshire interprets Clara and Fleet as a couple experiencing “young love”, Clara might be happy to adopt this as an effective cover story, but Fleet seems unsettled and keen for them not to be perceived this way: “No. No. You’ve misunderstood, we are not, that is to say I am…” (S1E2)
When Warden Hughes assumes Fleet is the new Warden and Clara is the new Warden’s wife, Clara says “I am certainly not”, with emphasis on the ‘certainly’. (S2E2)
Fleet definitely doesn’t sound enthused when he realises Clara has gone for a married couple as their cover story at the Grand Salcombe: “I am sure I’ll regret asking, but by any chance am I [Mr. Theasby?]” (S2E2)
When Titus Byrne tells the pair “I take it you're happy sharing [a room]”, Clara responds with a horrified “What?” (S3E4) (Obviously sleeping in the same room isn’t inherently romantic, but it is often perceived that way.)
Of course, fake dating and external assumptions of romance are very common tropes in romantic will-they-won't-they dynamics, and these moments could definitely be interpreted that way for Fleet and Clara. But I prefer to read these instances as reflecting a different kind of closeness between these two characters. They have a sense of emotional partnership that allows a marriage cover story to seem plausible to others and that other people sometimes automatically assume to be romantic (obviously with some period-typical heteronormativity at play). But to me, it doesn't seem like either of them are fully comfortable with their relationship being perceived in a directly romantic way. Perhaps they are a couple in a different sense…
Proposal via door plate
The way that Fleet asks Clara to be his business partner has always seemed to me like a platonic version of when people find personal ways to surprise their romantic partner with a proposal:
CLARA: You bought me a door plate for your office? [...] This has both our names on it. FLEET: What do you think? CLARA: I like it. (S2E7)
Fleet could have just asked Clara outright, without going to the trouble of buying a sign that would have been useless if she’d said no. If it was purely a professional business proposition with no emotional meaning behind it, I think he would have just asked verbally. But instead, he gifts her a sign with their two names paired together: Fleet-Entwhistle Investigations. There's something so intimate about that to me: about Fleet asking Clara whether she would like to be a duo with him in a more formally-defined but still non-romantic way; about him choosing to present this offer in the form of a gift; about the way he presents her with their two names joined together etched into metal and asks what she thinks; about the significance that this gesture attaches to their partnership; about him having enough trust that she'll say yes that the effort and vulnerability of presenting her with that sign seem worth it for him. And the gesture means an awful lot to Clara:
She thought about the door plaque he’d had engraved with both their names on it as his way of inviting her to be his business partner – typical Fleet, refusing to tell her so much as his favourite breakfast food and then to go and do something like that. It was the nicest thing anyone had ever done for her. (High Vaultage, p187).
Anniversaries
In the special episode ‘Murder in the Pharaoh's Tomb', Clara says “And you know what else is a big occasion Fleet? It's our one-month anniversary.” She wants to celebrate the anniversary of Fleet-Entwhistle Investigations. Their partnership holds a significance for her that means key dates associated with it are worth remembering and remarking upon.
When Clara first mentions their anniversary, Fleet nearly chokes on his drink, which seems like an instinctive reaction to the usually romantic connotations of an anniversary (see my point above about Fleet not being comfortable with their dynamic being perceived as romantic). But when Clara clarifies what she means, Fleet seems much more cheerful about the notion of their anniversary: “Ah, so it has.”
“Miss Clara Entwhistle, my partner”
I get extremely strong QPR vibes from this moment, when Fleet introduces Clara to the sailors at Grave End:
FLEET: This is Miss Clara Entwhistle, my partner - in business, my business partner. CLARA: I'm also his friend, but he doesn't like to say it. (S3 E3)
Fleet and Clara are partners, but not in the way the average person might assume from that word, which Fleet realises mid-sentence here. This is another instance of Fleet reacting negatively to the idea that their relationship might be interpreted romantically (see above). And yet, 'partner' (rather than, say, ‘colleague’) is the word that comes naturally to him in this moment to describe who Clara is to him. He then frantically emphasises the professional element of their relationship so as to avoid the romantic implication, but Clara is keen to proudly assert that there is a personal, emotional aspect to their dynamic too. They are first-and-foremost partners, and they are friends, and they do not want to be seen in a romantic light - this post basically writes itself...
“Her ridiculous detective.”
When Clara fears for her life at the display of the Lanterns, the narration tells us:
“she thought of her brother, her sister, her parents... Her ridiculous detective.” (High Vaultage, p172)
The fact that Clara thinks of Fleet in this moment of fear clearly indicates his importance to her, but I think the phrasing of this quote is particularly interesting. The narration lists Clara's immediate family: two of whom are dead (her sister and father), one of whom is publically mourning Clara's life choices (her mother), and only one of whom we have any real evidence of her having a positive relationship with (her brother). And then, separated from these complicated familial relationships by an ellipsis, the narration tells Clara also thinks of Fleet, “her ridiculous detective”.
Parents and siblings are familial relationships that tend to come with established expectations, in which the use of a possessive pronoun (i.e. her brother) to indicate the relationship is a norm. ‘Detective’ does not fall into this category; unlike ‘brother’, ‘sister’, ‘parent’, ‘friend’, ‘partner’ etc., ‘detective’ is not a word that inherently implies a relationship or that we'd usually expect to see preceded by a possessive pronoun. The idea of ‘her detective’ therefore stands out, giving the sense that there is a unique relationship being indicated here. The way in which Fleet is ‘hers’ is something that Clara has chosen for herself, something that they have shaped together. Who they are to each other can't necessarily be fully expressed using standard phrases that traditionally describe relationships between people. But Fleet is Clara's detective, of which she only has one, and who she'll think of in the midst of “the screaming of the heavens at the end of the world”.
Fleet is also the only one in this list of Clara's loved ones who gets an adjective - her love for him has detail. And while “ridiculous” might often be perceived as negative (it's certainly not a classic romantic endearment), it seems to me like there's such fondness in it in this context: the recognition of and affection for eccentricities, the idea that his importance to her is not (purely) based on his professional strengths but on Fleet as a whole - perhaps at times ridiculous - person.
“Settled”
When Clara and Fleet talk about Clara's mother’s expectations for her, they have this exchange:
"She's still living in hope that one day I'll settle down."  "You're not settled?" asked Fleet. "I am." (High Vaultage, p259)
By ‘settle down’, Clara's mother of course means ‘marry’, ideally into “at least a minor baronetcy”. But Clara already considers herself "settled", just not in a way her mother would understand or appreciate. She's not looking to "settle down" into a lifestyle other than her current one. She is settled in a situation where Fleet is certainly her closest personal connection in London (and perhaps anywhere), and where the two of them work closely together, operate as a duo, and then go back to their separate homes. And this partnership with Fleet is a comfortable set-up that feels right for Clara exactly as it is, rather than being a precursor to, or a distraction from, the marriage ambitions that her mother wants for her.
I think this exchange also contains an implicit sense of the commitment between the two of them. Fleet wants to check that Clara is ‘settled’ in her current situation, of which working closely - and platonically - with Fleet is obviously a major element; Clara confirms she is. There's a subtle indication of their shared intention to be in this for the long haul.
As a sidenote, Fleet and Clara’s implicit assumption that their partnership is a long-term one can manifest itself in joking contexts as well as serious ones. Look at this exchange from S3E5:
FLEET: We're not bandits, we're just going to flag it down. CLARA: We'd be terrific bandits! FLEET: Let's just see how our current line of work goes.
I think it’s notable that, in this joking speculation, both Fleet and Clara use ‘we’ and ‘our’. The joke could have been phrased just as effectively if they were imagining only Clara becoming a bandit. But the suggestion is that, if either of them was a bandit, they’d be bandits together. Even if they changed their lives entirely, they'd still approach life together.
Inseparable
Fleet and Clara have become a nearly inseparable duo in a way which is noticed by others. For example, after Clara and Fleet fall out in High Vaultage, Fleet meets with Keller, who says:
"You're here with me instead of barrelling across town with her, so I'm just assuming there is some thickheaded puffinry for which you need to apologise to Miss Entwhistle" (p335)
Keller, hardly the most emotionally perceptive man in Even Greater London, automatically infers from the fact that Fleet is on his own that he has had a falling out with Clara, rather than that they just happen to be in different places. When all is well, Keller expects to see the two of them together, whether or not they are in a position to be actively working a case.
Going back earlier in their partnership, Keller makes a similar assumption about Fleet and Clara being inseparable in S2E6. When Clara shouts her name amidst Keller's anti-Vidoc booby traps, Keller asks "Entwhistle? Which means… Fleet?" Again, there's this idea that if one of them is there, the other is likely to be there too - they come as a pair. (It's worth noting that this scene takes place less than two weeks after they first met.)
“Like a friend might?”
At the end of S3E7, Fleet suggests that he and Clara go to the theatre together. It would have been easy for this invitation to have been explicitly framed as a romantic proposition, or even for the nature of the offer to have been left more ambiguous. But Clara says "Archibald Fleet, are you inviting me to a social activity? Like a friend might?" The use of the word 'friend' directly labels this as a platonic interaction. And it's with that platonic lens on it that Clara is extremely excited to spend non-work-related social time with Fleet.
“Maybe it'll just be my good luck charm.”
CLARA: My grandmother's ring, I don't suppose you managed to hold on to it? [...] FLEET: Oh, it's been crushed.. I'm sorry Clara [...] CLARA: No, you keep it. FLEET: What? No... CLARA: Keep it. Maybe it'll remind you not to run towards trains. FLEET: Maybe. Maybe it'll just be my good luck charm.
In S3E7, Clara gives Fleet a ring, which - as a gift from one person to another - is traditionally a symbol of a particular, legally recognised, kind of personal commitment. But when Clara tells Fleet to keep the damaged ring, down in the Underground tunnels after the destruction of the beast and Fleet's latest brush with death, it is quite a different situation to a wedding or a proposal. A married man would traditionally wear his wedding ring on his finger for all to see, but Fleet won't ever wear this ring like that. The ring itself has been bent into a different shape between the wheels of their misadventures, subverting the usual associations of a ring given from one person to another. (In a heteronormative world, those associations are particularly strong when the two people in question are a woman and a man.)
That ring is not an engagement ring, but it is Clara’s grandmother's ring, an inheritance from the blood family she never really felt she belonged in, now given to the man who might be a very different kind of family for her in London. That ring - with which Clara saved Fleet's life - is a symbol of their bond. And it therefore serves as a reminder for Fleet “not to run towards trains" and as a “good luck charm”. I like to think he'll carry that ring with him, perhaps in his jacket pocket - a little piece of his partner, kept close to his ticking heart…
Thank you for reading all of this!
If you’ve read all of this, I'm assuming you also enjoy the concept of Fleet and Clara as a QPR (unless you're really a glutton for punishment) and that makes me very happy! This was long because there's so much to say about them… And I wrote all of the above without even getting into: the potential to headcanon Fleet and/or Clara as aspec (which I don't think is necessary for QPR headcanons, but which is also fun); Clara's baggage around and discomfort with marriage in general; the speed with which Fleet and Clara become a ride-or-die duo; and the many other demonstrations of care, understanding, trust, respect, and affection between them that didn't feel as directly QPR-coded to me but are nonetheless wonderful. Please do feel free to share your own thoughts!
#victoriocity#clara entwhistle#inspector fleet#archibald fleet#high vaultage#I'm not really trying to persuade anyone who doesn't already vibe with Fleet & Clara QPR as a concept#I just enjoy digging into that interpretation#I don't have any lived experience of QPRs myself#I'm just an aro who occasionally yearns#which tbf is probably the demographic most likely to obsessively interpret fictional duos as QPRs#I tried to avoid straying into anything like ‘they are too important to each other to be *just* friends’#when writing this#because I deeply dislike that outlook#That's not what I'm getting at here#Friends can be that important to each other without being in a QPR#I just think Fleet and Clara are important to each other in a particular way that can easily be read as a QPR or QPR-adjacent#Ngl for me personally I was very happy that there was no explicitly romantic Fleet and Clara moments#in S3 or High Vaultage#I’m sure I would still love their dynamic if they did explicitly take it down that route#I’m sure it would be done well#But the fact that Fleet and Clara are platonic (or at least ambiguous) means a lot to me personally#A related thought to that bit on romantic assumptions is that under amatonormativity#even the denial of romance/attraction is so often treated as evidence for it#which can mean that there's no way to escape that implication#so that's another reason why I enjoy taking characters at their word#when they express discomfort over a dynamic being interpreted as romantic#I finished writing this on Wednesday and I've been so impatient about waiting until S3 is fully out to post it lol

IMAGINE: Trying Not to Get Caught with Ross Colton *:・゚✧*:・゚✧ honey magnolia edition ✧・゚: *✧・゚:* Celly's 300 Follower Appreciation Requested by @comphy-and-cozy
Tumblr media
-who would have thought sleeping with Ross was exactly what you needed to be able to tolerate his presence
-and not only were you just tolerating it when you sat down at dinner together
-or had to sit a little too close during a family car ride
-you wanted to be spending your time together
-which was easy to do when you were stuck in the same house for the summer
-the tough part was trying not to make the change in your behaviours too obvious
-for years you hated each other
-finally getting along would beg too many questions
-and so you tread carefully as you moved into the living room where Ross was seating on the couch flipping through Netflix
-“what are you gonna watch?”
-“don’t know yet.”
-“that one looks good”
-and he scoffed, his bright eyes raising to meet yours
-they were soft and didn’t match the annoyance he was trying to have perceived
-“sit down then-”
-you lay out on the couch beside him with your feet closest to him as you reached for one of the throw blankets
-the two of you settled in, the movie playing out on the screen while you heard his mother working on dishes in the kitchen
-Ross was quick to complain before the movie could really start
-“your feet are practically in my lap, sit up”
-he complained, and you sat up with a pout
-but his touch kept you from straying too far
-your eyes left the screen and looked at him as he tugged at your arm
-he drew you in close a trouble-making smile on his face
-“what are you doing?” you whispered
-“com’ere” he encouraged and drew you closer so that your head was resting on his shoulder
-“your mom-”
-“if you hear her coming, just pretend you’re asleep”
-Ross slipped his hand beneath the blanket you had wrapped yourself in and tossed you a pillow to strategically cuddle over your frame
-it was the perfect cover for his hand as it slipped down the front of your sleep shorts and into your panties
-you took in a sharp inhale as your eyes went wide
-“Ross-”
-he hushed you
-“relax, unless you want my mom to know where my hand is…”
-you gave him a stern glance as you bit down on your lower lip in restraint
-you did your best not to move too much as his fingers stroked over the plain of your pelvis and dipped down
-but you did angle your hips just enough to help his hand with the awkward angle
-you couldn’t risk anyone seeing the subtle movement of his arm
-Ross did his best to provide any of his movements and to disgust just where his hand had ended up by assuring that he was for the most part concealed by the blanket as well
-it was with that security that his hand began to move against you with confidence
-he had quickly learned what you liked
-and he enjoyed just how quickly he could have your reeling for him
-the added challenge of going unnoticed by his mother in the next room would only make it more difficult for you
-you would have to force composure
-you couldn’t make a sound
-and you couldn’t make a mess of the couch either
-it was a cruel thing to do to you really
-but it wasn’t purely self-indulgent
-as soon as his fingers could feel you becoming wet from his touch he began to struggle
-he could already feel his cock growing hard
-it earned a low “fuck” from his own lips as she leaned in to mutter his words into your hair
-“i’m going to fuck you so good after they go to bed-”
-his final word was broken as he heard the shuffling of feet in the kitchen
-“you need anything before I head up for the night?”
-it was the voice of his mother
-sometimes she was too damn sweet for her own good
-because she walked straight into the living room and stood alongside the couch and down at you and Ross
-and you didn’t move an inch
-you weren’t even sure if you were breathing you had stilled so quickly
-petrified was the only way you could describe what you were feeling
-as Ross had delved his fingers deep inside you one final time before he stilled
-his fingers stayed there, deep in your cunt
-soaked in your arousal
-as you lay up against him pretending to have fallen asleep
-and she must had believed it
-because she didn’t seem to pry for more
-nor was she concerned
-you could only hear the smile in her voice as he spoke, “it’s so nice that the two of you are finally trying to get along”
-you felt Ross shrug and his head tilted carefully to one side as he gave off a nonchalant nod
-“i mean, i guess she’s alright”
-you did your best not to scowl
-and instead moved the only thing you could that his mother would not notice
-you flexed your cunt around his fingers
-and he made sure you know he felt it by hooking his fingers and dragging his fingertips over that spot that could so quickly make you unravel
-“you headed up to bed?”
-“yeah, dad too,” his mom told him and you could hear her leaning over the arm of the couch to place a kiss on the top of his head
-“grab the lights?” Ross requested simply
-and then she walked away, her footsteps fading in the distance as she turned off the lights and left the main floor in darkness
-the two of you sat silent and still in the room for a long time
-your eyes opening up just enough to watch the movie
-all the while his fingers were still teasing the walls of your cunt
-“you think they’re asleep yet?” you whispered after what felt like ages
-“no way to know for sure…”
-Ross glanced back towards the stairs
-there was no glow from the bathroom at the top of the stairs
-and the house was quiet save for the credits of the movie
-Ross reached for the remote with his free hand and turned off the tv to leave you both in complete darkness
-it brought a level of secrecy to the room
-one that gave you both the reassurance it shouldn’t
-with everyone else in bed, you shouldn’t get caught
-“you’re still soaked…”
-he told you carefully, his fingers returning to their slow pump once more
-it left you pushing the blanket aside and reaching for the drawstring of your shorts
-they were well soaked through and you were quick to dispose of them on the floor
-your panties were quick to follow
-you kicked them aside before Ross was easing you back to lay out on the couch
-he pushed open your legs with ease and relished in the sight of you
-he pumped his fingers inside you deliberately, assuring to hit just the right spot that left you throwing your head back into the couch cushion
-your lips parted in a silent moan
-and while the sight of your pleasure was obscured by the darkness it left him grinning wide
-leaning in, he came to hover over you
-watching as your features melted with pleasure at his hand
-Ross didn’t stop until he felt your arousal dripping down his hands and the walls of your cunt flexing around his fingers
-and while he didn’t get to fuck you
-it would have been too much of a risk
-he was satisfied
-Ross withdraw his fingers, licking them clean before he reached down for your panties and sleep shorts
-he helped ease them back onto your weak legs before tossing the blanket back on top of you
-you looked up at him confused
-you should be making your way up to bed, and instead, Ross was making himself comfortable
-you raised a brow at him slowly, your head cocking to the side
-he opened his arm to you and welcomed you in as you came to rest your head against his chest
-he held you in his arms, his cheek pressed into the crown of your head and he became lost in the scent that was uniquely you
-“if my dad catches us here in the morning…”
-“it was a really boring movie, and you were already alseep,” he claimed
-and his lips coming down to kiss your hair carefully
-together you fell asleep on the sofa
-and come morning the sunlight would creep through the curtains and you too would wake together before his mother and your father could catch you
-and it wouldn’t be the last time you and Ross would take the risk
-the two of you liked to put yourselves in compromising positions…

I just think the narrative of the very first years of lark's life being rooted in pacifism followed by a lifetime of being steeped in death and necrotic energy is fascinating

I think I might have mentioned it before but I realise now that books are VERY difficult to promote (if not the hardest type of media to promote unless turned into a show/movie) since they're not visual.
but this is why I'm glad I'm an animator and game dev bc when I finally finish Blue Bones I can let people know it exists through animation memes and short games either about the story or set in the same universe.

so..
dream smp superhero/villain aus, am i right
recently(as in, about a few hours ago at the time of first writing this), i just had the sudden urge to just.. write a whole essay about this topic. and like, who am i to not bend to the will of my own mind?
so, strap in, and prepare yourself for me rambling a bunch about how people write plot twists and identity reveals in these kinds of fics(this is gonna be mostly, if not all, positive, if i may add).
(also, quick little disclaimer, for anyone who sees this who doesn’t know of me(which, fair), yes i will be writing in italics the whole time — it’s just a thing i do. just letting y’all know now jandkdndjd.)
now, i’m sure we all know, or at least have heard of the superhero/villain fics, of which there are many, that us dream smp fic writers have latched onto. we all know of the fic that, while may not have invented it, has definitely popularized it — tommyinnit’s unbeatable method. while i myself have never read it fully — got a little bit too crack, for my personal tastes, and pure angst has never been my forte, either (but to each their own, of course!) — i cannot deny the effect it had on this fandom, and i, for one, absolutely love it.
i’m not here to simply talk about the super fics(which is what i shall be calling them from now on, for simplicity's sake) in general, however. no no, here, i want to focus on something specific, something that typically is the main thing that draws one in to this kind of fic.
that is to say, as i’m sure you already know if you’ve read the intro.. the identity reveal, as well as just plot twists in general.
now, i could really have used any sort of fandom to use as an example here, but the dream smp is the first fandom that comes to my mind when i think about this — plus, well, dsmp fics are the only kind of fics i’ve been reading recently, so.. haha, yeah.
so, let’s get this straight, right out of the bat — it’s incredibly obvious to a reader who exactly the supposedly hidden identities are supposed to be. most fic writers, and do note i say this with love, i promise; are not all that great with coming up with original names. when i read a fic, i know that siren is wilbur, that the blade/blood god is techno, and that the angel of death is philza. and while those are the most common names to see, there are more that alert one to their true identities, as well: orpheus, whippoorwill, jubilee, zepherus, crowfather..
(dude i looked so hard(not really) to find other common names ppl use for techno but i could not find any.. either they use blade/blood god or they’re using a unique name or something else that isn’t used much by people.. in which case kudos for them.)
that isn’t to say that most official superhero media have great names, though. i mean.. captain america? ironman? spider-man? batman? whole lot of blank-man’s..
but, well.. for the people who know the characters well(which, well.. if you’re reading the fic, chances are, you’re gonna know the characters), it’s pretty obvious who’s who from the get-go.
but..
that isn’t really.. the point of these fics.
while it isn’t unwelcome to be in the dark about certain people’s identities(or at the least, have semi-original names),, that’s not the point.
the point is to see how all the characters interact with each other.
and.. it’s to see how they react to the reveal.
because, while the reader may know who the character’s real identities, the characters themselves don’t. and that, folks, that’s why most of you lot read them.
if not because of their names, then the summary often clues you in on what exactly you’re reading — that is, typically, an identity reveal between either a civilian or vigilante tommy, and a hero or villain trio of techno, phil, and wilbur; with some sort of extra spice thrown in to make it unique. what that is can vary, either tommy and gang are some sort of experiments, or are otherwise wanted by a not-so-good group, or maybe a different, just-as-good(that is to say, not as good) group is causing mayhem, and everyone around them has to pick up the pieces while keeping secrets locked tight. maybe nothing is as it seems at first glance, or maybe tommy is a kid with a power who heals the wrong(or right) person.
there are a ton of ways you can take this to keep it from going stale — and even if a fic is just like those that come before it, well.. two cakes is always better than one, you know?
brief fic plugging aside, and to reiterate a previous point.. it’s the characters’ reactions that drive a fic forward, not just their secrets.
a great example of this in a popular media is in this show, i don’t know if you all would have heard of it, it’s called, uh.. lemme think real quick...... oh yes, the owl house.
jokes aside, the owl house does provide a wonderful example of what exactly i’m talking about. major spoilers for the show for the next few paragraphs, for those who haven’t watched it — which, i highly recommend doing so, for it is very good. the start is a bit weak, i will admit, but the rest of the show absolutely makes up for it. definitely gets better halfway through the first season, if not a bit earlier than that.
(warning this went of for way too long,, woops djndkdjd)
now — and forgive me if i get a couple details wrong, it’s been a hot second since i’ve seen the earlier episodes — in season two, luz, with amity’s help, comes across a book, one written by a human who was previously trapped in the demon realm, just like luz is currently — you know, after she destroyed the only portal door they had to keep belos, the show’s main antagonist, from getting his hands on it. and apparently, he was building a portal door to the human realm — and was presumably successful.
so over the next few episodes, they build up this human, named phillip wittebane, as a fairly nice and smart guy. mans is just trying to get home, you know? and as luz reads the book, she begins to idolize phillip a bit. she follows his instructions, and eventually, she manages to rebuild the portal.
it uh, fails.. but that’s a story for another day.
she goes back to the book, and finds out phillip needed to go consult this being called the collector — who is important but not to this essay — and luz assumes he needed to find him to help with the portal.
with help from her aunt, lilith, she manages to go back in time(don’t ask how that’s not important), and find phillip. they team up, and adventure to find this macguffin that’s used to summon the collector.
good news! they find the macguffin.
bad news? uh.. phillip, isn’t quite as nice as was first believed. in fact, he happily tries to sacrifice his new companions in order to get away with the macguffin.
the two manage to get away, and end up confronting phillip once more — which ends with lilith punching phillip in the face, hell yeah girl!
but once they return to their own time, well.. the show cuts back to phillip, and..
it’s revealed that he’s belos, who is, if i may reiterate, the show’s main antagonist.
fans theorized about this for a while now, but this was the first time it was confirmed.
but folks, we’re not done with the owl house talk yet!! (i promise this is relevant okay the toh talk will be over soon).
so, it was revealed to the audience that phillip was belos..
but the cast, all they know is that phillip is a bitch. for all they know, phillip was a human, and belos is a witch.
but this all changes when the episode hollow mind airs.
luz and hunter — the golden guard, belos’ right hand, and supposedly his nephew — end up traveling into belos’ mind(again don’t ask it’s not important).
they end up falling deeper into his mind, and find out all the terrible things belos has done(which absolutely crushes hunter’s mindset, as he was advocating for his uncle earlier, poor kid) — launch an attack on a witch town, claiming it was by wild witches; horrifically kill a bunch of witches with a test version of the sigil system(well, they were still alive when we last saw them, but they were in agony, and i wouldn’t be surprised if they ended up dying a while after), and literally murder his own fucking brother.
and if that wasn’t enough, turns out? he cloned said brother. and then had to kill that clone when they fell out of line. rinse and repeat for the next, oh,, four hundred fucking years.
icing on the cake? hunter is a clone — or a grimwalker, as the show calls it. which, in of itself is another great example of the fans knowing something before the characters, but if i touched in it deeper this section would be longer, and y’all probably came here for the dsmp talk,, jdnkdmidj.
anyway, luz ends up getting confronted by belos — or rather, inner belos, but if you haven’t seen the show you don’t need to worry about the difference — and this.. this is where he reveals his true identity to luz.
and were this a lesser show, this would probably be very underwhelming for fans. like, c’mon, dude, we already knew that, give us something new.
but, again.. this wasn’t a reveal for the fans. this was for the characters.
and by god, did they deliver on that.
luz, who was already kicking herself for idolizing the prick that was phillip, now has to deal with the fact that, not only was she idolizing belos, albeit his past self, but she also helped him.
so, all this to say.. plot twists don’t need to be a surprise to have a reaction.
now, i just accidentally made like half of this essay so far about owl house, which, in a thing that’s supposed to be for, well.. you know, not the owl house.. probably not a good thing?
so, well.. how about i spend the rest of this time talking about a fic that i believe handles plot twists really well — that is, both ones that a surprise to the audience, and ones that aren’t.
let’s talk about.. tommyinnit’s services for villains, vigilantes, and various other vagabonds by scorpionoesit.
that’s right, folks, this whole post was secretly an advertisement for vagabonds this whole time!!!!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! YOU WERE FOOOOOOOOOOOOLED.
[coughs].
anyway.
in my opinion, vagabonds perfectly handles both types of twists.
for those who haven’t read it before, the TLDR of the fic is that tommy is just.. some guy, who ends up helping all sorts of people, be that civilians, vigilantes, the mafia.. even villains and heroes.
granted, we haven’t seen the latter two yet, but it’s only a matter of time!
and usually, these sorts of fics would have tommy have some sort of healing powers, like tommyinnit’s clinic for supervillans by bonesandthebees, which i linked earlier. but.. this fic doesn’t do that.
that isn’t to say fics that do have him use healing powers aren’t good — for one, have you seen tommyinnit’s clinic, or like- literally any other fic like it? and two, the last thing i want to do is talk down in writers for using tropes, even if they seem overused. once again, i’d like to bring attention to the two cakes theory.
but, i do have to admit.. it is refreshing.
i could explain his power, but tommy puts it together better than anyone could, over in the second chapter. the tldr of it, though, is information. which.. doesn’t sound all that good, until you see what he can get up to in the fic. i won’t spoil much(i say, knowing i’m going to spoil so many other things),, so if you’re really interested in knowing, and haven’t already, i’d say check out the fic!
and, just to state again, i’m gonna be going over some things that are spoilers for the fic, so either go and read the fic, or proceed with caution. and if you’ve already read the fic before, hell yeah!! take a peanut butter cookie.
now, as i’ve said before, there are some things — mainly characters — in this fic that are pretty obvious to a dream smp fan — which, as stated before, is not a bad thing.
there’s the vigilante orion, who’s stated to have a “large red cape” and a boar skull — who you can immediately pin down as techno from that description alone. and then, when tommy mentions a protégé of orion’s, who just know he’s talking about ranboo(technosensei for the winnnnn).
then we have masquerade, who, if not from his name(presumably being a reference to one of the tftsmp episodes), or his power(semi-time travel and portals), then by his outfit, we can say safely that he’s karl.
the hero marauder, even if you haven’t seen that name used for her before, is also pretty clear to be puffy, seeing that she’s stated to be dream’s mother.
and the author isn’t hiding their identities, either — in fact, they want you to know. because trust me, you’ll know when they’re attempting to hide it. or, well.. not quite hide it, but they aren’t giving any obvious clues, either.
jägerbomb is a villain that hasn’t shown up much, beyond a few mentions here or there, but even his identity can be found, if you know where to look. there’s the fact that jägerbomb is a type of cocktail, and the fact that, apparently, his power causes him to not be liked a lot by micheal(who, for those who don’t know, uh.. doesn’t have good parents, to say the least). all this to say, well.. there’s only one person in the dream smp that’s so obviously connected to alcohol. jschlatt.
schlatt, though, even through his minor appearances, can still be found out(unless we’re wrong but like.. [points at the villain jschlatt tag] we’re.. probably not). but, what if there’s a person who isn’t so obvious?
enter, geyser. or, sewage boy, as he’s more commonly known as.
at first glance, especially at the latter name, you’d probably think, like.. they’re charlie, right? which.. sounds plausible, until you take into account their power. manipulation of water — or, more specifically,, steam. which, well.. probably not charlie, then? especially considering he shows up later in chapter three, with.. you know, not steam powers.
when looking into at sewage boy’s identity by focusing purely on their powers, there’s.. not many people you could pin to them. maybe foolish, but, if anything, he’d be related to water, not steam. boomer, mayhaps? i don’t know much about him, but he’s like, some frog guy, right? again, still related to water, not steam. and while this fic was first posted a bit after he joined, i can only assume that it was planned out beforehand, so.. again, probably not him.
again, looking purely at their steam powers, or their name,, doesn’t really reveal anything about their identity.
but.. if you look deeper.. it can be done.
looking at their powers at the surface, as i’ve said before, doesn’t help much. but.. their powers isn’t just steam — or, well.. it is, but they can do more than just control steam.
specifically, in the fic, it’s said that they can, and i quote..
“..turn all the surrounding water...into steam so fast that the steam so fast that the expanding pressure could and would rupture every pipe in the vicinity with an explosion powerful enough to level every building in the area.”
and, i should mention, just a few paragraphs before that quote, he’s said to wear a trench coat.
folks, is there any sort of character that comes to mind when you think of explosions and trench coats?
that’s right, the one and only wilbur soot.
now, personally, when i first saw this theory, i shot it down real quick. knowing what we know about him and his son, fundy, back when chapter two first came out(which is it’s own can of worms), i thought it didn’t make too much sense. if wilbur wanted to protect fundy, yeah, i could see him being a villain, but.. wouldn’t it make more sense to just.. lay low?
but.. then i saw more and more evidence leaning towards it. the first two things i mentioned, as well as the fact that he is absolutely down to murder a kid because he might threaten his son’s safety — something i assume someone who is willing to become a villain would do.
plus, well.. all we know about wilbur’s power is that he needs to charge it, which.. makes sense if he needs to summon steam to use in a fight.
and then there’s the fact that both wilbur and fundy are a bit weird about sewage boy — specifically when wilbur finds out tommy and tubbo went to fight between orion and sewage boy.
“But the Lower is dangerous, Niki,” Wilbur argued. He glanced at Fundy for a second before continuing. “There was a massive villain attack just down the street last week!”
Fundy glared at him instantly. “Really, Dad? That’s your argument?”
“That attack was a major outlier, dude,” Tommy argued. “Besides, I was there, and I got away literally without a scratch.”
...
“You were what?” Wilbur yelped, at the same time Fundy yelled, “Wait, you guys actually went?!”
Tommy turned to Fundy, confused. “Yeah? We said we were going as we left, we weren’t exactly hiding it.”
Wilbur turned Fundy. “Why didn’t you stop them?”
Fundy turned a fierce glare on his dad. “I’m sorry, I was a little busy freaking out over why the fuck Sewage Boy was in the Lower.”
...
Wilbur suddenly looked sheepish. “F-Fair point.”
so.. yeah, i am definitely on the side of sewage boy = wilbur soot now.
(also there’s the fact that villain wilbur is literally in the tags but shhhhhh this is the more fun way)
all this to say, well.. uhh. something something plot twists.
okay i’ll be honest this deviated a little bit from my original point but uh. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
and all of that,, is just the stuff from the first two chapters. and it’s not even everything there is. we’ve got tubbo’s stuff, i’ve only kind of mentioned ranboo, micheal is lovely, clementine is the best character, tommy’s got a whole thing, and.. [gestures at fundy] yeah.
and then there’s the stuff in the third chapter. this fic isn’t even done yet we’re not even halfway done yet.
i could go on for so long about this fic. like i didn’t even get into the non-superhero/villain related foreshadowed stuff. eret’s powers,, niki’s connections.. and like, duuuuuude i could ramble so much about the fucking implications of the peanut butter cookies. was thinking about those implications since like the first week of may.
but i’ve rambled for far to long, and at this point it’s only vaguely related to my original point. so i should really wrap this up by now, hahaha.
so, tldr.... the best plot twists and identity reveals aren’t always reliant on the audience being surprised as well, character reactions are important as well; the owl house is a good show, and read vagabonds.

A Bitterer Taste
(Unrequited Sydney/Clover) The safehouse is empty. Sydney and Clover share a few drinks.
The taste of cheap alcohol lingered thick and warm on her tongue. The warmth should have been pooling in her throat by now, but Sydney found it hard to swallow when she caught Clover’s eye, a sly grin running shivers up her spine. Suddenly she felt lucky that her hair stood on end by default. “Nice to have the place to ourselves, eh?” “Yeah. Shit, yeah. Feels weird seeing it so empty.” “Mm. Don’t know about you but I’ve never appreciated having lived alone so much.” Sydney nodded, chucking back another swig from her bottle. There was something different about the atmosphere in the safehouse that night. Most of the gang were out heisting; nighttime hits, quick in-and-out jobs under the cover of darkness. Those that weren’t were enjoying their own respite - as far as Sydney could tell, they’d all already migrated back to their respective personal areas, allowing her and Clover to commandeer Jimmy’s bar (minus the cocaine - that could wait for another day). Clover lifted her glass, whiskey slipping past her lips with practised ease. Sydney watched each movement, painfully aware of the light-pink smudge her lips had left on the rim. She never usually wore makeup, she thought, or certainly was either so conservative or so skilled with it that it never seemed apparent. Why had she chosen tonight? Don’t get your hopes up, Kelli. You know that never ends well. “Well, much as I like the alone time, I’d rather not be alone while drinking” “Yeah? Sure it’s not that you’re hooked on my winning personality? Don’t blame you, I’m a real spunk.” Clover chuckled at that, locking eyes with her impromptu drinking buddy once more. Sydney’s short-lived confidence drained in seconds, trying to convince herself the heat rising to her cheeks was the alcohol slowly catching up to her. “You’re good craic. Don’t see much of anyone but the lads upstairs otherwise, holed up with the cameras.” “Yeah. S’pose so.” She paused, breaking eye contact for a moment, and opened another bottle. Clover grinned incredulously at her. “You’re having a good night.” “Mmh. Need it.” Another pause. “So, uh… Do you ever watch people on ‘em? The cameras, I mean. Like, in a non-security way. I don’t judge.” Clover scoffed, thankful for having swallowed her last intake of whiskey before the question was breached. She’d had it up her nose before - not fun. “Will I get fired if I admit to this?” “I don’t snitch. Pinky promise.” “Hm… Sometimes. Not often - hate to say it but you’re all a bit boring when you’re off doing your own things - but sometimes.” “Yeah? D’you ever watch me?” It took Sydney a moment to realise what she’d just asked. Shit. Shit, that was obvious. Come on, get your shit together, Kelli. She’s your fucking coworker, nothing more.“Why d’you ask? Hope I’ve gone sweet on you?” Shit. Fuck. Was that a joke? Does she know? Goddamnit. Bloody fucking hell. Sydney forced a chuckle, breaking eye contact to suck down more of her drink than was wise, staring straight ahead. What you don’t see can’t hurt you. “Hey, look - if you don’t like the whole joke flirtation thing, that’s fine. Just say the word and I’ll stop, alright?” “No, no, it’s-” She swallowed her words along with the alcohol. “It’s fine, I’m good. No worries.” “Yeah?” “Yeah.”
