The Daily Thistle – News From Scotland
Wednesday 5th September 2018
"Madainn Mhath” …Fellow Scot, I hope the day brings joy to you…. Another hot night, but when I left the house this morning I was greeted with a heaven full of twinkling stars, the new moon is not yet visible, so no reflected light which means the stars put on a show for free...In the water off the coast this morning there was an abundance of small fishing boats plying the waters, and on the shore line I even saw two stalwart men with fishing rods casting with gusto in to the ocean... Then Bella and I made our way back home for liquid refreshment, and Bella to sleep me to drink coffee, read and type and then talk to you...
TROPICAL SUNFISH SPOTTED IN HIGHLAND WATERS…. Sunfish were spotted last week off the north coast of Skye and off Ardnamurchan. A fish normally found in tropical waters has twice been spotted off the west coast of Scotland last week. It is the fourth time this year that the sunfish has been recorded by the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust. The ocean sunfish is the heaviest bony fish in the world, with an average weight of 2,200lbs (998kg). The species was recorded on Friday by the crew of a fishing boat off the north coast of Skye. A sunfish was also seen off Ardnamurchan on Wednesday. Sunfish, which drift with ocean currents, were once rarely seen in Scotland, but boat operators have reported more sightings in recent years, with August being the peak month. They live on a diet of mostly jellyfish and swim at depths of up to nearly 2,000ft (610m).
COUPLE TIE THE KNOT ON LOCH NESS RACE FINISH LINE…. A couple taking part in an extreme obstacle course race at Loch Ness stunned other competitors when they got married on the finish line. Marlene Harper and Les Simpson, from Wick, had secretly decided to get hitched after the race on Saturday. Eighty of their friends were at the ceremony - along with thousands of other participants. The muddy couple had just completed the 10km Prime Four Beast Race, which featured 30 obstacles. Marlene said: "Neither me or Les have ever taken part in anything like this before, but we wanted to do something to show how far we've come. It was amazing to get married in front of all our friends, and it was a great surprise for them." Les added: "After all the mud and sweat came the tears, because Marlene was still my beautiful bride. It's a day we shall never forget." Jono Buckland, director at organisers FireTrail Events said: "It's not every day that something like this happens at the Prime Four Beast Race, but what a brilliant experience for all involved. A couple that races together stays together." The couple completed the race in just over three hours. A total of 1,500 participants tackled the extreme obstacle course, with the fastest male, Gavin Hogarth completing the course in 48 minutes, and the fastest female, Coralie Arthur finishing in just under an hour.
CLIMBERS RESCUED AFTER GETTING LOST IN MIST ON GLEN COE MOUNTAIN…. Two climbers have been rescued from a mountain in Glen Coe after getting lost in mist. The men raised the alarm at about 12:00 on Saturday after becoming stuck three-quarters of the way up the 3,127ft (953m) Aonach Eagach ridge. It was Glencoe Mountain Rescue's third call-out in two days. On Thursday a hiker died after falling more than 300ft (91m) in the same area. In a separate incident a walker was rescued from the Ochil hills. The hiker, who had become stuck on steep ground above the Gannel Burn, was located by the Ochils Mountain Rescue team and walked off the hill. The stranded Glen Coe climbers were found by the rescue team at about 15:45. A Police Scotland spokeswoman said they were "cold and wet, but otherwise ok" after their ordeal. Following the death of the climber last Thursday, Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team abseiled several times over a seven-hour period to extract the man's body The man, who was in his 20s, was among a group of four walkers from the Edinburgh area who were attempting to scale the 3,090ft (942m) Am Bodach.
FEARS OVER PROTECTED WILDLIFE DISTURBED BY DRONES…. Police and wildlife experts are becoming "increasingly concerned" at the number of cases of protected wildlife being disturbed by drones. They say some drones are being flown dangerously close to breeding birds and animals at sites in Scotland. Seals have reportedly been chased into the sea at protected haul-out sites, which risks their pups being crushed. Concerns are also being raised about nesting birds becoming panicked and plummeting off cliffs into the sea. The Partnership for Action Against Wildlife Crime (PAW) Scotland said it is important drone operators understand the law. Some sites are given a special status which makes disturbance - even accidentally - a crime.
SCOTS EARTHQUAKE 'FELT LIKE LORRY CRASHING INTO HOUSE'…. An earthquake in Helensburgh "felt like a lorry crashing into the side of a house". The 2.4 magnitude quake hit the Firth of Clyde just north of Greenock on Thursday night and could be felt in Dunoon, Greenock, Helensburgh, Gourock and surrounding villages. The tremor was recorded by the British Geological Survey's seismometer at 11.34pm. Local residents contacted the BGS to say their windows shook, doors rattled and ground rumbled, with one saying it "felt like a lorry crashing into the side of their house". However, there have been no reports of damage to property. David Galloway, a local seismologist from the BGS said: "We received around 20 calls reporting a small earthquake on the Firth of Clyde north of Greenock. "Around 30 people have responded to a questionnaire on our website detailing their experiences." The BGS monitor 100 seismometers throughout the UK - it said that if anything above background noise is detected they can determine whether or not it is an earthquake. Thursday's quake was the third to hit Scotland this month with a 2.3 magnitude tremor recorded near the North Sea in Aberdeen. There are around 250 earthquakes in Britain every year but most go unnoticed. In 1880 a 5.2 magnitude earthquake near Loch Awe is the largest ever recorded in Scotland.
On that note I will say that I hope you have enjoyed the news from Scotland today,
