#25: Artio, The Bear Goddess

Fáilte, Gods and Goddesses!

Today, we step onto the green shores of Ireland for our first Celtic deity. Meet Artio, the Bear Goddess. Evidence of her cult was found as far as modern-day Switzerland, where a figure showing a woman feeding a bear was discovered. In SMITE, Artio is a melee druidess who shapeshifts into a bear to protect her allies.

Next Time: Who knew the wisest of the gods would turn out to be the pettiest...

Let's start with the goals of making Artio:

Bear Hug: Easy one, but necessary - we need to be able to transform into a huge bear and deal some serious damage.

Mother Nature: Artio can heal, conjure up vines, and drain vitality from her enemies.

Celtic Guardian: Artio's strong sides are good Crowd Control abilities and High Sustain. We need to be able to soak in some damage and prevent enemies from advancing.

Now, we could just go with a human or (like Artemis) an elf, but for Artio, I think we'll look at the Wayfinder's Guide to Eberron and one of their races. More specifically, the Beasthide Shifter. Believed to be descendants of humans and lycanthropes, Shifters combine the traits of man and beast into a single, deadly force. Beasthide Shifters get a +2 Constitution and a +1 Strength, 60 feet of Darkvision, and proficiency in Athletics skill. We also get the Shifting ability; as a bonus action, we can assume a more bestial form for up to 1 minute. We gain Temporary Hit Points equal to [our level + our Constitution modifier] plus one more benefit depending on our Shifter subrace. Beasthide Shifters gain an extra 1d6 THP and +1 AC bonus when shifted.

As the Big Bear In Charge, Artio is the protector first and foremost, so making her the Folk Hero seems right to me. We gain proficiency in Animal Handling and Survival, one type of artisan's tools, and land vehicles. The Rustic Hospitality feature allows us to seek help and shelter among the common folk, because of our good reputation among the poor.

ABILITY SCORES

We'll start with Strength - we're a melee combatant, our blows need to pack a punch. Constitution will be next, we're the guardian with a thick bear hide for a reason. Follow that up with Wisdom, it's going to be our casting ability, but we won't be very spell-forward.

Dexterity is next, while not the most nimble of fighters, we need to make sure everyone around is protected. Charisma is a little low, but since Artio keeps mostly to the wilderness and forests, she doesn't necessarily interact with people... although we need to boost this up, bears are pretty intimidating. Finally, we're dumping Intelligence. I don't see a reason to have academic smarts here.

CLASS

Now, I know what you're thinking. Nature, shapeshifting, magic... Druid start-to-finish, right? Well, not necessarily. Half-a-point for trying, though.

Level 1 - Fighter: Artio is a melee character with spellcasting. We need to be a tank first, a magic-user second. Fighters get a d10 Hit Dice, [10 + Constitution modifier] initial Hit Points, and proficiency with light armour, medium armour, heavy armour, shields, simple weapons, and martial weapons. For Artio (when not in the Bear Form) I think we could get regular leather armour and either a quarterstaff or a glaive. Our saving throws are Strength and Constitution and we get to pick two class skills (Intimidation and Perception).

Fighters begin by choosing their Fighting Style, and to fulfil Artio's role as a guardian, we're gonna go with Interception from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything. Whenever a creature within 5 feet of us is hit by an attack, we can use our reaction to reduce the damage taken by [1d10 + our proficiency bonus] to a minimum of 0 damage. We must be wielding a shield or a simple/martial weapon for this.

We also get Second Wind, which lets us take a breather and heal [1d10 + our Fighter level] Hit Points as a bonus action once per short or long rest.

Level 2 - Fighter: We get Action Surge. Once per short or long rest we can take one additional Action on our turn.

Level 3 - Fighter: We get to pick our subclass, our Martial Archetype. For Artio, who uses her bear form to maul any enemy in her sights, we're gonna pick the Brute archetype from a 2018 Unearthed Arcana. With Brute Force we increase our overall weapon damage by an extra 1d4.

Level 4 - Fighter: Time for our first Ability Score Improvement. We're really going to double down on our Hit Points, by taking the Tough feat. Our maximum Hit Points increase by [our level x2]. Whenever we level up afterwards, we get +2 Hit Points Maximum.

Level 5 - Druid: Time for some representation of Nature's might. Multiclassing into a Druid gives us proficiencies we already have, so we're going to skip it. We do, however, learn the Druidic language - a system of phrases and symbols we can use to encrypt messages.

Druids are also full casters, so we learn Spellcasting from the start. Wisdom is our casting ability, and we can learn cantrips and ritual spells. Druids have an access to their full spell list, and can each day prepare [our Wisdom modifier + our Druid level] spells. We start by knowing two cantrips:

Druidcraft is a druid-exclusive cantrip used to influence nature around us. We can make flowers bloom or wither, predict the weather, light and extinguish small flames, and create harmless sensory effects.

Guidance lasts for 1 minute (concentration). A willing creature we touch (or us) can add a 1d4 to one ability check of its choice.

We also start with two 1st-level spell slots:

Cure Wounds is a very useful healing spell. One creature we touch regains [1d8+our spellcasting modifier] Hit Points instantly. The number of Hit Points healed increases if we use a spell slot higher than 1st level.

Earth Tremor creates a shockwave within 10 feet of us. Each creature in the range must make a Dexterity saving throw or take 1d6 bludgeoning damage and fall prone.

Level 6 - Druid: We unlock the Druid's signature ability: Wild Shape. As an action, we can transform into a beast for a number of hours equal to half of our Druid level (rounded down). In the beginning, we can only transform into a beast with no flying or swimming speed and with a maximum CR of 1/4... which means, we can't become a bear yet.

We also get to pick a second subclass, our Druid Circle. We need to become a bear ASAP, therefore we're choosing Circle of the Moon, which focuses on improving our Wild Shape. The Combat Wild Shape feature lets us transform as a bonus action instead of action and lets us spend a spell slot when transformed to regain 1d8 Hit Points. Circle Forms changes our Wild Shape table, giving us the ability to transform into beasts with a maximum CR of 1 as of now. This means we can now become either a brown or black bear.

We gain another 1st-level spell: Entangle causes grasping vines and thick brambles to grow in a 20-foot square area centred at a point within 90 feet of us. For 1 minute (concentration), the area becomes difficult terrain. Any creature that enters (or ends their turn in) the area must make a Strength saving throw or become restrained. On each of their turn, they can make a Strength saving throw to free themselves.

Level 7 - Druid: We don't get any class features here, but we do unlock 2nd-level spells. Gust of Wind causes a strong gale to blow in a line 60 feet long and 10 feet wide for 1 minute (concentration). For every 1 foot they want to move, all creatures within the line must spend 2 feet of their movement speed. The wind disperses gases and fog and can either extinguish flames or fan them (50% chance).

Level 8 - Druid: Time for another ASI. This time, let's put two points into Constitution for even better durability.

Our Wild Shape ability also improves, now giving us the ability to transform into beasts with a maximum CR of 1 but with swimming speed (e.g. a giant octopus).

We also learn a new cantrip: Frostbite causes ice and frost to appear on one target within 60 feet of us. The target must make a Constitution saving throw or take 1d6 cold damage and gain disadvantage on their next weapon attack before the end of its next turn.

We get one more Druid spell: Enhance Ability lasts for 1 hour (concentration) and enhances one ability for one creature of our choice (or ourselves).

Level 9 - Fighter: Coming back to the frontline combatant, we unlock Extra Attack. We can now attack twice instead of once during each Attack action.

Level 10 - Fighter: Halfway through the build and we get an ASI. This time, let's raise our Dexterity by 2 points for better AC and Initiative count.

Level 11 - Fighter: We get another subclass update. With Brutish Durability, we can now shake off more powerful attacks. Whenever we make a saving throw, we can roll a 1d6 and add the result to the overall score. This benefit also works on Death Saving Throws; if a total result is 20 or higher, we gain the DST benefit of a Natural 20 (+2 saves).

Level 12 - Fighter: Another ASI. This time, let's put one point in Strength and one in Dexterity.

Level 13 - Fighter: We get the Indomitable feat. Once per long rest, we can re-roll a failed saving throw. We have to use a new result even if we fail it again.

Level 14 - Fighter: Another subclass upgrade. This time, we get to pick a second Fighting Style. The Superior Technique style lets us choose one manoeuvre from the Battle Master subclass. We also get one d6 Superiority Die to fuel said manoeuvre. Pushing Attack allows us to spend the Superiority Die whenever we hit the enemy and impose the Strength saving throw on them. On a failed save, the target is pushed up to 15 feet away from us.

Level 15 - Fighter: Our Extra Attack can now be used to attack twice instead of once, for a total of three attacks per one Attack action.

Level 16 - Fighter: For another ASI, we once again increase both Strength and Dexterity.

Level 17 - Fighter: We improve our Indomitable feature into two re-rolls between long rests.

Level 18 - Fighter: Another level, another ASI. Let's max out our Constitution into 20.

Level 19 - Fighter: We get our final subclass upgrade. With Devastating Critical, when we score a critical hit with a weapon attack, we gain a bonus to damage roll equal to our Fighter level.

Level 20 - Fighter: Our capstone is Fighter 16, which means final ASI. Let's put two points into Intelligence to get rid of negative modifiers.

And that is Artio, the Mother Bear of Ireland. Let's see what I came up with here:

To start off, we're an absolute tanking beast (no pun intended). With an average Hit Points of 235 and Temporary HP of 25+1d6 every time we shift, we can soak some serious damage and protect our allies. Our AC is 16, and we have a +3 to our Initiative.

Unfortunately, our magic capabilities are pretty scarce for a Druid. Plus, most of our spells require concentration. Our Intelligence and Charisma scores are also not great, so we might be vulnerable to those kinds of saving throws.

How To Prepare For IIT JEE In Class 12 | IIT Coaching Classes | VACI Lucknow

Some of you out there must be toppers of your class or among the top 10% of your class. But that is just a performance in your class or best at a school level. It means till now you have been competing among a small student base of 50 – 1000 students.

But once you start preparing for IITJEE or AIEEE entrance, the competition is huge. This year in 2015, over 2 lakh students appeared in IITJEE and over 12 lakh in AIEEE. So my advice is that you seriously need to scale up your efforts to face the competition.

Are you ready to face these challenges?

You need to prepare yourself mentally as well as physically to face this competition. Mentally, you need to think wide when you think of the competition you are facing. So don’t get defocused and remember that you have to compete with unknowns so you have to put your all efforts in it to excel.

May you have scored well in your school level examinations by not even spending 20 hours on studies at home but this is not going to be enough with such a huge competition. You need to scale up your efforts and set a target of 50-55 hours studies at home every week and you have to do scale up step by step.

It also trues that you are not going to get started studying for 9-10 hours suddenly its require proper strategy.

·         For the first week you try to  cut down your times which you are spending in other works by 2 to 3 hours

·         Next week cut down your times  which you are spending in other works again by 2 to 3 hours

·         You cannot start studying 1o hours a day suddenly whereas earlier you are studying for 3 to 4 hours

·         Try to do the same as earlier, Increase your study time from 3-4 to 6-7 hours and next week or after 2 weeks scale up to 9 to 10 hours.

How you study for these hours?

You have to study with full concentration, no disturbance, and continuously for 3-hour sessions. The idea is to simulate real exam conditions. While studying, you have to create an atmosphere as if you are sitting in the exam. Avoid doing the following during a 3 hours session:

·         Study on a desk if you have it at home. Avoid studying while lying down on a bed.

·         Don’t get up from your desk for 3 hours of the study session. Even not for drinking water.

·         Don’t listen to music during studies. If you have a habit, then slowly come out of it by reducing it day by day.

·         No phone calls and no SMS during studies.

·         Study with 100 per cent concentration as if you are sitting in the exam.

Things you should not do during JEE preparation!

Remember that for the next 2 years you have to give your best to get admission in a good college. So to take out 55 hours every week, you need to sacrifice some of your time-sucking activities.

If you are involved in any of the following activities mentioned below, I suggest you should stop it immediately:

·         Don't socialize too much:-Avoid too much talking on the phone with your friends. Not more than -30 minutes every day. Keep yourself away from family discussions and don’t get into arguments with parents and brothers/sisters because it will only waste your time and energy. Be selfish to focus on your career.

·         Don't spend long hours on TV, Internet and playing games:- If you are too much into TV, cut down immediately. Don’t spend more than 1 hour in front of the TV every day.

 Internet is the biggest addiction of all time. Real-time sucker. Don’t sit on the computer for more than 1 hour unless as their any study needs.

·         Don't play outdoor sports:-Those who are playing physical games a lot should reduce them. These games are very tiring. If you are physically tired, you would not be able to concentrate on studies. I suggest an evening walk or light exercise either in the morning or evening.

·         Don't study late night:- Those who study late nights, sleep the whole day. This is a bad schedule. If you don’t sleep well in the night, you will feel sleepy in school and in your coaching classes. So best is you should sleep for 7 hours any time between 10 PM to 9 AM. Those who don’t get study atmosphere at home in the day time, in the worst case they should study till 2.00 AM and get up at 9.00 AM.

·         Don't sleep for long or two short sleep hours:-You should target for 7 hours of sleep every day. Also, avoid day time sleeping for more than 90 minutes. Those you could manage to sleep less, I would not recommend a sleep of fewer than 5-6 hours. If the body is tired, the mind cannot function properly.

·         Don'ts go to school daily:-I suggest that if possible, go to school not more than 4 times a week. School studies are not going to play an important role in your career at this stage. Even school studies should be done just before the exams say 1-2 weeks before exams.

How to solve the problem:- Five-Step Learning Approach (FSLA)

Why we need FSLA?

IITJEE is an exam that is totally based on problem-solving. Mostly it is numerical based questions. Because of this nature of IITJEE, students preparing for IITJEE exam should spend most of their time in solving more and more problems. It does not only help you in cracking  IITJEE but also help in better understanding of the subject.

Many students who are spending a lot of time on problem-solving but even though they are not able to score in the exam. behind this there are a few reasons:-

·         This happens because while doing problem-solving, they learn things but they do nothing to retain them in their memory.

·         They don’t remember ideas/tricks of many questions in the exam which they should have solved.

To  learn/memorize, they need to put efforts and time, as well as they, should follow the correct approach.

To retain and repeat, I recommend a “Five Step learning Approach (FSLA)” to you for doing problem-solving and it will definitely help you in many dimensions like improving your speed, accuracy, problem-solving ability and confidence in the topic.

Here are 5 steps of the approach.

STEP 1 –Understanding

In this step

(a) First Attempt the problem. Try to first see the problem and don’t directly jump to the solution. Try at least 5-20 minutes and not spend more then 5 minutes, if you don’t understand the question properly and 20 minutes maximum if you are getting ideas after that only you should see the solution.

(b) Marking the difficulty levels. After seeing the solutions, you have to to decide the difficulty level of the question and always mark these level in front of each question. There can be 4 levels.

Easy level: Problem is easy if you are able to solve it in less than 5 minutes.

Moderate level: Problem is moderate level if you are able to solve it by just seeing the solution for less than 1 minute and get the idea.Or by trying hard and spend more time to solve it.

Difficult level: Problem is difficult if you are not able to do it yourself after spending a lot of time and you have also taken lots of time in understanding the solution But finally able to understand the solution very well.

Very-Difficult: Mark a problem a very-difficult if  you are not able to understand the question and its solution is also impossible to understand so not waste more time at this stage they are useless and pull your confidence down.

Step 2: Memorizing

In this step, you have to solve a question like that you are appearing for any test. The questions of the test would be the average and difficult questions you marked in step– 1. Just count how many questions you marked average or difficult after counting you should give the test of 90 questions (it can be collected from more than 1 chapters) at least and total time is 3 hours

You have to take the test very seriously. Taking these tests will improve your following abilities.

Speed: As you have solved these questions earlier, so try to be a little fast in solving these questions. This will improve your speed to write fast. Accuracy: Try to be accurate as much as possible. If you are doing mistakes in more than 10% of the questions, focus on it and before you sit for the test try to make in your mind that today you are not going to do any mistake. If you make it a target that you have to be perfect, after a few tests you will start seeing the results.

Concentration: While doing a test, your level of concentration is much higher. So these tests will help you in improving your concentration on a regular basis. So when you are doing these tests, make an environment that should resemble the environment you face at the test centre. Don’t answer the phone, don’t respond to doorbell, don’t get up for water and no music.

So give this test as mentioned above and this will help you in increasing speed, accuracy and also help in study habit of studying for long hours.

Step 3: Strengthening

After finishing step 2 where you appeared for a test based on the selected questions, you need to review your performance. If you could not solve most of the questions(not able to solve 60 to 70 out of 90 ), you need to repeat what you did in step 2 to strengthen your preparation. Do it after a  gap of 4-5 days. You can even change some ratings before you take the test like you can re-mark some average questions as easy or difficult questions as average or average as difficult.

Step 4: Building confidence

This is the fourth step where you revise all questions orally. This step should come after 4-8 days of the strengthening step. Keep 30 second for each question to revise. So for 90 questions, you can take 45 minutes. See each question and try to recall the trick/steps/concepts you applied to solve that question. If you are not able to recall in 15 seconds, mark the question and go to the next question. Repeat this for all the questions. After all the questions are finished, refer solutions to see the marked questions and try to learn their ideas.

You should be able to recall ideas of 90% of the problems. If it is less, you need to repeat this step after a few days.

After successfully recalling ideas needed to solve the question from your mind, feel like you are a master/expert of the topic. Do it with interest and full concentration, the way you watch a movie or match.

Step 5: Point to remember

You need to be regular and systematic to follow it. You also need a time table to plan these steps. Without a schedule, it is impossible to remember the steps of various topics and subjects.

I am sure you can take benefit of FPA as it helps in proving the knowledge of the topic as well as it prepares you for exams by improving your examination skills like speed, accuracy, concentration, knowledge.

[HM] A random (hopefully funny/entertaining) tale about a young man, a Chevy Spark, a few life lessons, and a car accident.

So this was about a year and a half ago. I was 21 and desperate to get CHEAP/new car. First of all let me start off by saying I was young and dumb (still young and dumb). I tend to make irrational and quick decisions when i’m excited about something. For personal reasons that I don’t wanna get into I was not able to receive a license until I was 21. So when I finally got my license I needed, let me re-phrase that...had the biggest urge/desire to buy a car like the day before my license came in the mail. Also getting a car would allow me to start a new career.

Now for financial, and impatient reasons I was going to finance the car. Now when I say finance I really mean have the LOWEST monthly payment possible. My job requires me to drive 100-200+ miles a day mostly highways so leasing was out of the question. I also did not, and still do not want to buy used. Which is a whole separate argument for a whole different day. Anyway I was literally looking for the cheapest 2018 model car ever created.

It’s a week before fourth of July and the cheapest car I could find was a 2018 Chevy Spark for around 13k. I figured what the hell I’ve waited 21 long years on my skateboard I can wait another week to try and get the “fourth of July deals” to increase my wheel size from 59mm to 200mm.

Boom after checking “cars.com” everyday, on July 7th 2018 I pull up with my dad to a chevy dealership 90 miles away from home. Me, feeling like a Russian mobster (I’m Russian haha) on the outside, and as excited as a young school girl on the inside walk inside with my dad. I pull out my phone and show the sales guy the ad I saw. 2018 Chevy Spark for $10,001 in a lightish blue.

Keep in mind I did NO research. I read NO reviews. My mind was set on this Chevy Spark. You could tell me 9/10 Chevy Sparks are reported to have a mind of their own and drive off of cliffs at 50k miles and I would still buy it without a second thought.

Now I’m sure all of you can relate to a certain degree. You know the feeling of being so damn excited for something. The feeling of wanting something so damn bad that you would do irrational things to get it. In that moment you don’t want to hear anything negative about your decision. You just want IT. At the time it was the only thing I could afford so in my mind it was either the Chevy Spark or never drive a car again in my whole life.

Back to the dealership, the sales guy asked if I wanted to test drive it, and for that 90 second circle in the parking lot (I didn’t even take my time I just wanted to get back and sign the paperwork) I fell in love what felt like for the first time. I didn’t even fall in love with the car I fell in love with the feeling of driving hopefully my neat future car.

This is a Chevy Spark LS. I’m talkin manual windows, no power locking, no center console, cheap speakers, feel ever pebble on the road, get blown off the highway when a gust of wind or even ANY car passes by. I’m talkin a car that teaches you what claustrophobia is. A car that feels like you’re sitting inside one of those electric cars for toddlers. You get the point this was a bare skeleton with a piece of plastic around it. But I loved it.

I had pretty good credit at the time so I was able to finance my first big purchase. 7.9 APR at 178 a month. At the time thats literally all I could afford. Ya know with insurance being so stupidly expensive if you’re young. So after a long day of paperwork and the sales guy telling us he literally can’t even drop a penny off the price I drove my baby home.

Fast forward to January 1st 2020 around 5pm: “DAD I NEED YOU TO COME TO ME I JUST SLAMMED INTO A PARKED CAR GOING 60”

Okay okay I know you’re excited to hear what happens next but let me back up a little.

For my job I spend A LOT of time on the road and in my car. 200+ miles/6+ hours a day is not uncommon. I’m about 5’7 and 150 pounds so I’m not the biggest guy. I’m a nice guy, but the Chevy Spark taught me what it feels like to be uncomfortable. It taught me what anxiety is. It taught me that you can have road rage at yourself.

A little insight on my job; Im an in home sales man for home improvment. The owner of the company I work for (he took a liking to me because he is also Russian) knew I was planning on getting a car. He told me when I get a car he will train me in becoming a sales rep. Promoting me from my position as a telemarketer. So knowing this made me that much more in a rush to buy a car. We drive to appointments everyday, and sometimes just sit in the car to wait/chill in between appointments. So basically 2/3 of the work day is spent in the car, and the work days can sometimes be 9am to 11pm.

Me being naive and irrational did NOT think about these things when purchasing a car. I did NOT realize how important comfort is when sitting in the car all day. Sure the first 6 months I was so excited about having a car that I did not think about these things, but things quickly changed.

I started to get really angry and started to despise working. I would wake up KNOWING I’m about to be very uncomfortable and annoyed inside of my car.

Every detail about the car is horrible. My left elbow rested on what felt like rough old cement, and the rigid surface would leave marks on my arm. My right arm would always be itchy from the cheap cloth armrest. My left leg literally had no where to go. THE WORST PART ABOUT THE CAR THOUGH, my left knee would literally almost ALWAYS be touching the manual window roller handle. Half the time the handle was either directly on top of my knee or directly in front of my knee. I had nightmares about crashing the car only because I knew when I did that handle would be the end of my knee.

There was no storage compartments in the car. I had no where to put my phone, my change, my wallet, anything else comfortably. Because it’s a tiny hatchback my back seats would ALWAYS have to be pushed forward to fit all of my work stuff (giant bags). MEANING I could not push/lean my seat back enough. It was the equivalence to those people in the asian countries that live in the tiny apartments that look lime walk in closets.

Now I’m a music guy so listening to music is a must. Not even a year and my speakers started to blow... The speakers sounded like an old nokia phone in the first place. Or a better description would be when your earphones break so you have to pull out the old trusty $9 backup earphones from ross. Constantly I would think about installing better speakers but just never got around to me

There are 2 lessons to be learned from this pointless post, but one of them is how important comfort is when picking a car to own. I will now NEVER sacrifice comfort in the future. Not just in a car, but in anything.

Okay now....January 1st 2020 at about 4:30pm on a very main road. My new years resolution was to stop smoking cigarettes so this was day one!

So around that time of year it can get slow for my job. So as a side hustle I started doing Uber Eats. Let me take a quick second to say CHEVY SPARK DOES NOT QUALIFY FOR RIDE SHARING BECAUSE IT DOES NOT HAVE 5 SEATBELTS. I was EXTREMELY mad when I found that out AFTER I bought the car.

Since the car is so uncomfortably small it took many many attempts to find a phone mount/holder that was just okay. I finally found one that required my phone to be right in the middle. Keep in my mind this is my first day using it. Also keep in mind I am Russian and it was just new years. RIP to my liver the night before.

Here I am driving 60 on a very main road. My phone is right in the middle and I’m looking at it trying to figure out where I’m supposed to deliver this burger to. Uber eats; pick up food from restaurant and deliver to customer As I’m looking at my phone in the middle, while singing along to my music, most likely thinking about life, 100% hoping my headache would go away, wondering what my girlfriend is doing, admiring how warm my new north face jacket that I just bought is. Basically doing everything but paying attention to the road (And I’m sorry my grammar is getting worse as this post is going its 3am and I stopped caring as much LOL). I’ve been driving for a year and a half now I’m so confident in my self I can drive with my eyes closed using my feet.

Anyway, BAM I look up and my car is basically inside of an Audi SUV. “FUCK!!!!!!” “Fuck fuck fuck fuck” close my eyes cause its a dream open them cause I’m waking up after a nightmare “FUCK”

This is my first accident. I was going 60mph, at this point I’m completely speechless and very shocked. Every one always told me that car was a death wish but after about 5 seconds of stating in front of me I immediately climb over the airbags and exit the smoking, pulverized hunk of plastic.

I slammed into a parked car on the right side of the road. Really horrible too, thank you seatbelt. I don’t even know what to do in this situation so I’m dumbfounded. Witnesses are asking if I’m okay I was so all I could say was “yeah I’m okay”

I called my dad, and after what seemed like a minute he shows up. The owners of the parked car came out of the restaurant all normal accident stuff. I had a sprained finger, bruises yada yada.

Now my insurance wanted nothing to do with is since I was doing uber. I filed a claim through uber’s insurance and they said I’ll be covered. Awesome, score, BUT I didn’t know what gap insurance was at the time. I failed to do my research which I always end up having to learn a lesson cause of sometimes heedless decisions.

I had 8 thousand left to pay off my car loan and 40k miles on the car. I for sure thought it was over. I was done, game over. Every one told me the insurance would pay me 5 MAYBE 6 thousand for the car leaving my to pay off the rest.

Now I’m not religious but by some kind of mystical higher power I was blessed. I pretty much hit the jackpot. My payout was $11,200...

I purchased the car for $10,001...

I got my loan payed off AND received about 2k.

Now if that doesn’t scream second chance I don’t know what does.

To wrap up this long long meaningless story I just want to say a few things.

If you read up to this point I applaud you. It wasn’t a hell of a ride to read this story. It wasn’t the script to the next big summer blockbuster. It was more like, a carnival ride for children ages 3-6.

But there are some important lessons and morals to be taken from this. 1. Fuck the Chevy Spark 2. Comfort in a vehicle is very important 3 Do your research and please get a car that you will love even 2 years down the line. Get something you like. If you cant afford it wait until you can if you can be patient 4 GAP INSURANCE 5 Don’t make hasty decisions like me

After lots of research I am getting ready to finance a 2020 Toyota Corolla SE next week, and I’m very excited!

We live and learn. We make mistakes and we learn from them. I know when it comes to stubborn minds like myself we won’t listen/pay attention to advise that much until we have to pay the consequences. I try to listen more and look things into a different perspective as I get older because the older you get past 18 the more bad decisions screw you over. The consequences weren’t as bad as a teenager but now wrong avoidable decisions can really change your life for the worse. Adulting isn’t easy but thats just the game we call life. Issues With High School in New Zealand // NZ Education Issues Part Two

{This post has been in the works since forever (the publication of part one, to be more specific), and now that I've finished my second last exam of this year I've decided to go ahead and spend more time on it. It's such a massive rant, and I even go as far as to suggest some "solutions" to the issues of this system (I'm so extra I know, don't come @ me because I'm not an education system expert okay I just know what works and doesn't work for me as a student). If you don't mind that, read on!} Hey, I'm back with another post totally unrelated to books! Due to the popularity of my last post about my issues with the NZ education system, I'm back with part two, except this one is entirely geared towards high school (the final three years to be exact). If you haven't read "part one", my general explanations yet, you can do so here. My main issue with the high school system is NCEA (National Certificate of Educational Achievement) run by the NZQA (New Zealand Qualifications Authority). This is an exam system used nationwide with the exception of a few schools, which do other programmes such as IB or Cambridge. But for this post I'll be focusing on NCEA, which is what my school uses, and it'll cover topics such as how exactly the system works, why I don't like it, and alternatives to this system.

What is NCEA?

You could probably google it for a concise definition (but don't quote me on the accuracy of that statement), but I'll try and explain it without making it sound too confusing. If you already know what it is/are or have done NCEA, feel free to skip ahead to the next section because you should also know all of this! For your last three years of high school, the majority of your school work is geared towards getting NCEA standards, of which there are three levels. In the first of these years, Year 11, you're working towards Level One, in Year 12 (the most important year) you work towards Level Two, and in Year 13 Level Three. It's also possible to "skip ahead" in some cases, but that's another story.

Credits

Each assignment/exam, which I'm gonna call a task, earns you credits (usually between two and six per task). NZQA likes to think that each credit is roughly equivalent to ten notional hours, which is class time as well as homework. You can get your credits at four levels: not achieved (you don't get any credits, but they show up on your learning record under not achieved credits), achieved, merit, and excellence. These levels just show how well you did at the task as there is different marking criteria to see what level you're working at. In order to pass the year, you need to gain eighty credits. However if you are trying to get a level two or three certificate and you've already done a lower level, you can 'take' twenty credits from that level so you only need sixty credits. Likewise, if you have credits from higher levels and you are trying to get a lower level endorsement, you can use those credits too.

Endorsements

For high achievers, there is an option to try for merit or excellence endorsement. There are two types of endorsement; certificate, and subject. Subject endorsements are considered harder to get. Certificate endorsement is where you get fifty or more credits at merit or excellence for a merit endorsement/fifty or more excellence credits for an excellence endorsement. This just means your certificate will say something like "John Doe achieved NCEA Level One with Excellence Endorsement". Subject endorsements are endorsement on a smaller scale, in individual subjects. The courses of most subjects are usually around 20-24 credits, with a mix of internal (assignments, reports, research projects, performances, tests) and external (exams) assessments. To get a subject endorsement you need 14 excellence credits, with at least three internal and three external credits.

External Exams

I felt that this needed its own section as the way NCEA does it is quite different from a lot of other systems. With externals, you sit up to three papers in one subject and have three hours to complete them. Wait, what? Yeah, you read that correctly. It varies from subject to subject, but you can usually be entered in up to three external standards, which you sit in the three hour long exam. They're all marked individually too, so there's no bonus for doing more papers than other people; if anything, it's a disadvantage because there are gonna be people who spent ninety minutes on a paper and did better work than you if you spent one hour on a paper. Each paper is worth a certain amount of credits, usually ranging from 4-6.

Results come out in January, and if you're unsatisfied with your mark you can apply for a reconsideration, which is basically where a second marker remarks your work. If your grade is lifted, you get refunded the price ($20.40NZD per paper), otherwise your paper is returned and your money kept by the big bosses. If you're sick for the November exam, or feel that you've been influenced by events out of control such as (and I quote) the bereavement of a family member or close friend (look, I'm sorry, I don't want to make fun of this, but WHO EVEN USES THE WORD BEREAVEMENT ANYMORE (if you do please don't be offended I mean you no harm)), no worries! You can apply for a derived grade, which is where you get given the mark from your mock exam.

NZQA Scholarship Exams

NZQA also has the option of scholarship exams for high achievers, generally offered in year thirteen and sometimes year twelve. These are three hour long external examinations in which you can gain the award of Top Scholar, an outstanding scholarship, or a scholarship. I won't go into it any further, but if you're really interested search it up.

What's wrong with NCEA?

So there you have the basic rundown of the system. There are several key issues I have with it, and I'll go through them one by one.

external exams

My main issue with the external exams isn't that they exist (I actually really like exams), it's the way they're marked. For essays, out of 8, and for most other exams, out of 24. 24??!! As someone who is used to being able to get at least 40 points in an examination I fail to see how you could possibly differentiate well between the abilities of students with such small scale marking. The other thing is, a lot of the marking is subjective and you don't get marks unless you include evidence on the assessment schedule (a.k.a. what the writer of the exam wanted you to get from the paper).

Not everyone sits the same external standards. You don't get penalised for not attempting one paper as they're marked individually (in fact in many ways, not attempting is better than a not achieved because the paper just disappears from your NZQA record of achievement). Yes, this has been an advantage to me in History because I would've died doing all three papers (plus I hated the NZ significance one okay), but it's also been a disadvantage in subjects like English where I know many talented individuals who only attempt two papers as an attempt to do better in those two and sacrifice the third. I just think that it's stupid because why should people be disadvantaged by putting themselves under more pressure and doing three papers? Why should people not be penalised for not attempting a paper? It makes much more sense, since all papers test different areas of a subject, that you do get penalised for not doing a paper (or they could just follow my killer suggestions and combine the papers into one exam that everyone who takes externals will receive because obviously that's a far better method). 

How could this be fixed? Easy enough, I think. Redo the format of the exams so that it's marked out of 100 (cmon, 50 at least!) so it's percentage based rather than fitted to a curve: top 10% get excellence, next 10% get merit (if you really want to, next 20%), top 20/30-35/40% get achieved. Wait, does that sound harsh? I don't think so, because in other exams, 60/65% is the rate of pass, 80% merit and 90% excellence! But of course NCEA has made it so that by getting just over 1/3 of the paper correct you can pass... leaving the pass rate around 33-37.5% completion of paper. Also, if they really desperately wanted that curve, they could just go off people's scores and do the whole top 10% of people get excellence, etc! It's just that this way there's more room to differentiate between the scores of people, it's not so difficult to go up by one point, and you get a much better idea of where people are at. It's super easy to scale because it's unlikely that a whole lot of people are going to get the same mark to the extent where they are 10% of all students taking that paper so the excellence mark is raised, which is currently the case with marks out of 24. Also, what papers you take in the external shouldn't be optional; all available papers should be combined into the one exam (look, even with the current mark system that would total 72 marks, so even sticking to the current format could potentially work!) so that there aren't disadvantages or advantages of completing less/more papers. Everyone learns different stuff, you say? Well, maybe internally, but the end of year exam should be the same. It's designed so that you get to discuss what you've learned in class in the more humanities type subjects such as English, History and Drama (one of the only things I like about it), and there's no reason that would change with the new format.

Fine. I admit I've never actually had my essay marked in a proper external, yet. So we'll see how that goes after I get my results back in January, and I may just update y'all about that: positive or negative. If you really want me to do let me know in the comments! Anyway, moving on: the thing with essay marking is that it's really subjective. Of course, there's no solution to this. But what teachers and markers alike can do is stop making assumptions into students' knowledge or judge them for their essay style. In English class, students aren't taught how to write essays. We are taught about the content of a book, or rather a teacher's opinion on the book (and how we can stick that in our essay for bonus points). I'd like to hope that by this age, people have seen and done enough to form their own opinions on books written before the 21st century and that there is no need for a teacher to break it down sentence by sentence, plus add their opinion? What I'm proposing is that instead of focusing so much on what we're going to write about, in class we focus on HOW to write an essay and just apply it to the text we're studying. This would also reduce the subjectiveness of marking based on essay style, because everyone would've been taught a definitive, "NZQA approves" base. I know of teachers who mark harshly on essay styles they don't like because they expect everyone to have been taught English the way they teach it, which I think is total rubbish. And a lot of the time, essays and work written in class is marked based on how your views align with your teacher's, which shouldn't even be a factor of the marking.

How could this be fixed? Again, the scale needs to be expanded. Eight points is not nearly enough to differentiate between good and bad essays. There could be a large marking scale of say, thirty, and markers marked different aspects of the writing out of say five: grammar, use of evidence, structure, personal voice, comprehensiveness, etc. Alongside this could be the use of a check marker: currently, you can only get your work check marked if you apply for a reconsideration (I'll go until detail about that later). But by having a check marking system in place each essay would filter out subjective marking because unless you were unlucky at got two subjective markers the difference in marks would be quite evident (also why there needs to be a larger scale, to allow more difference). And again I don't think one exam should entirely consist of the essay; lets combine written, visual and unfamiliar text into the one exam!

reconsiderations and resubmissions

I think NCEA asked for this one. If you think your worked was marked unfairly, you can apply for a reconsideration (external). Some internals let you do resubmissions if you have made a minor error which the teacher believes the student could spot on their own (wait a minute, how could a minor error lift you up an entire grade? I'm not sure I comprehend). In this case, NZQA is pretty much saying "yes! There are double standards! If you think you've been subjected to one, pay and we'll reconsider your result (but it probably won't change because we're like that)!" Disagree if you like, but I think the whole idea of reconsiderations basically implies there are double standards. Yes, markers can make errors, and in that case definitely apply (through a different channel would be appropriate though, such as the way you apply for derived grades which is through your school). But it seems a lot of reconsiderations are applied for not in math, the subject of black and white marking, but subjects like English and History where it's quite literally up to the marker what they choose to give you.

With resubmissions, it's not that big of a deal. It's up to the teacher, and if they offer it to you you get it the one chance to fix your work. Usually it's just some grammatical errors or a minor calculation error. My issue with this is also less major, I just think you get the one chance. I'm sorry if you didn't notice it when you were doing it, but in the case of assignments, the deadline has passed and you've had your chance to spot the errors; in the case of tests, it's a timed test. Why should you get extra time, and at that, it's extra time given after you're told you could lift your grade if you spot the error (Where's Wally?). 

How could this be fixed? How about, get rid of them! (Sorry if you don't agree. But I do.) It's unfair to people who work hard and say get a secure merit grade don't have the chance to lift their grade because they weren't close enough to excellence, but then someone whose work was "very nearly excellence" gets that chance.

derived grades

Whoa, here's another hot topic, somewhat controversial, where I take the side of high achievers. Oops. Well... The thing with derived grades is, I feel that it disadvantages students who actually sit the exams. Of course, it's really unfortunate if you aren't able to sit the exam/don't do the best for whatever reason. But I just don't think it's fair that you can submit for grades from mock exams. In my experience, a lot of mock exams are deceivingly easy because a technique teachers use is to make you feel calm for exams by giving you an easy mock. The only exception to this at my school is the maths department, which believe it is better to give you something more difficult so that you know if you can do well in that exam, you'll do fine in the real one, or you realise there are gaps in your knowledge which you then have time to fix up before the real thing. How could this be fixed? Perhaps instead of assigning grades to the derived grades process, there could be something where people who weren't able to attend for whatever reason can apply with evidence of school work that they would easily be able to pass the paper? This still wouldn't be an ideal situation of course but it would remove the unfairness of getting higher grades from an easier exam and would make it so that the students didn't entirely miss out on getting a mark for the exam even if it might be lower than desired.

internals

There is a new practice at schools now called "credit farming". This is essentially where the schools try and get their students as many credits as possible through internals with little regard to the quality of the learning (see here). This can be especially advantageous for high achieving students because it's an easy way to earn lots of excellence credits which is the primary factor in deciding the recipients of university scholarships in New Zealand.

I'm not totally against internals; they're cool, and a much more reliable source of credits than externals which can be quite flaky. But that doesn't mean I don't think they count as far too much of your course's overall level of achievement. The end of year exams should be a key factory, but with NZQA it's internals too. They can be fun, but they aren't difficult enough to truly measure ability. And also, each school has a different procedure which can't be fixed even through moderation and the other measures NZQA has in place.

How could this be fixed? Firstly, the externals need to be more reliable and the criteria for each grade really clear. This would make internal credits less valuable, so the course could spend more time focusing on the external exams instead of expending so much energy on internals which I feel is the less valuable part of the course. Fulham became the first club to spend more than £100m in their first summer after promotion to the Premier League, but the player many regard as their most valuable asset cost nothing.

Ryan Sessegnon has spent the past 12 months being linked with leading Premier League clubs and being touted as a great hope for English football, to the extent his club manager thought he should have been part of Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad this summer.

The 18-year-old started 45 of Fulham’s 46 league games in their promotion campaign. He was Championship player of the year, young player of the year and apprentice of the year.

It was something of a surprise, then, that Cottagers boss Slavisa Jokanovic left him out of his starting XI twice in four games last month, although he was back for Saturday’s 3-0 loss to Manchester City.

So how did he do? And what should we expect from Sessegnon as he adapts to life at a higher level?

Has he made much of an impact so far?

After such stellar performances last season, it was something of a jolt that Sessegnon lost his place after two games this term.

As those matches ended in defeat – by Crystal Palace and Tottenham – the obvious conclusion was he had been dropped.

The words they are using at Craven Cottage are not so harsh. The view inside the Fulham camp is Jokanovic wants to nurse Sessegnon along the steep learning curve he has to navigate.

The only player younger than Sessegnon to feature in the Premier League this season is Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden, whose total contribution is eight minutes and who remained on the bench against Fulham as Sessegnon completed the whole game to take his tally to 287 minutes.

The difference against City was that after playing in an advanced role in those opening matches, he reverted to left-back, where he first broke into the Fulham side in 2016, and where he played during pre-season.

There was an obvious reason for Jokanovic’s use of the youngster.

Sessegnon made his Fulham debut in August 2016 – aged 16 years and 81 days – at left-back.

But his attacking prowess has seen him pushed further forward – and the conversion from left-back to goalscoring wide attacker prompts comparisons with Real Madrid and Wales forward Gareth Bale.

Sessegnon scored 15 goals during the regular Championship campaign last season. A November hat-trick in a 5-4 win at Sheffield United offered a glimpse of his attacking instinct, and the arrival of left-back Matt Targett in the January transfer window freed him up to play on the left of a front three for the remainder of the season.

From Boxing Day, he went on a run of 10 goals in 12 league games, ultimately finishing as the seventh highest-scorer in the second tier. Not bad for half a season in attack.

But the Bale comparisons are misleading.

Unlike the Welshman, Sessegnon is not a player who catches the eye with moments of magic. Jinking runs and 30-yard screamers are rare – only one of his 15 goals last season came from outside the box, and 35 players completed more dribbles than him in the Championship.

What he does have is an unerring knack of finding space in the 18-yard box, where he rarely misses, converting 73% of the Opta-defined ‘big chances’ he had in 2017-18. His overall shot conversion rate of 26.8% was the third highest in the league.

If we do have to compare, perhaps the focus should be on Ashley Cole – one of the greatest full-backs England has ever had, and now putting his attacking abilities to good use as a wing-back for Los Angeles Galaxy.

Most of the big clubs are monitoring him. Tottenham were willing to buy him but did not make a bid. Despite overtures, there was no indication from the player, or anyone around him, that he was keen to move. Spurs, Manchester United, and everyone else for that matter, must wait.

A local boy from Roehampton, Sessegnon honed his talent on the streets, specifically on the concrete of a football cage where he would go with friends to play five-a-side. It made him feel comfortable with the ball at his feet and at ease trying to play out of areas where there is limited space.

Sessegnon knows he has plenty of work ahead of him, particularly in defence if he is to be a regular at left-back, The signs are that he is willing to do the work required to smooth off those rough edges.

A naturally left-footed player, it was instructive to watch his warm-up at Etihad Stadium, where he struck a succession of 40-yard passes with his right foot. Most found their target.

His speed is a clear asset. There are not many defenders anywhere who can match Sterling for pace, and in one first-half penalty-area challenge on the England international, Sessegnon also had the strength to win a duel.

However, at the highest level comes the greatest scrutiny. Only an excellent low save from Marcus Bettinelli prevented Sterling from exploiting a rash tackle from the youngster, who dived in to win the ball when he had limited chance of success. Such moments can prove very costly against the best players.

How Lakers forward Julius Randle completely transformed his body and forged a shredded physique

When Lakers forward Julius Randle came into the off-season, he had one thing on his mind: getting into the best shape of his life.

After leading the Lakers in rebounding in his second year in the league, the team's management challenged the young forward during his exit interview to get even better, telling him to return in “beast mode” for the next season. Randle took the challenge head-on.

The former Kentucky star connected with trainer Amoila Cesar, who put him through an intense workout program, taking him from 15% body fat down to just 6% in less than five weeks.

“It was a lot of unconventional movements that I've never done before, but it really paid off for me,” Randle tells Men’s Fitness. “We did a lot of resistance training, and focused on legs workouts and strengthening my foundation. The NBA season is such a long stretch, and your body can wear down, so I wanted to push hard this summer and maintain it during the season.”

Randle and Cesar trained five days per week, spending 90 minutes in the gym each day. Cesar broke down the program into what he called “three pillars”: hypertrophy/strength, speed/agility, and recovery/mobility. The workouts included hip and mobility drills and at least 20 minutes of nightly foam rolling. His warmup? A one-mile run.

“The most important part was making sure Julius’ hips and mobility improved every week,” Cesar tells Men’s Fitness. “Julius suffered a hip-pointer injury and a broken leg in the past. Hips, glutes, and core are the power source for many athletic movements, and we worked hard on strengthening those areas. We always started with dynamic and mobility stretches to make sure his glutes would properly fire.”

Cesar didn’t just design a workout program for Randle, he also overhauled his nutrition, too. Randle kept a strict diet of organic foods, no hidden sugars or corn syrup, no dairy products, and no liquor. Randle also stuck with a higher Alkaline diet of raw foods and vegetables, which helped reduce his intake of refined carbs and heavy metals.

“It was huge for me in slimming down and making my body more athletic,” Randle says. “It was about really learning what works for me, what works for my body, and what doesn't help me. Portion control was something we really focused on and it made a major impact.”

The transformation has helped Randle move better on the court in the Lakers’ uptempo offense this season, and the results have been positive. While Randle is playing seven fewer minutes per game than last year, he’s scoring and rebounding at nearly the same rate, and he’s shooting a career-best 54% from the floor.

Randle spoke with Men’s Fitness about his insane body transformation, his partnership with MET-Rx, his intense training routine, and his favorite cheat meal.

Men's Fitness: What was it like overhauling your training last off-season? What was your daily routine like?

It was great. Coming into the summer, my main focus was getting into the best shape of my life; the best form that I could possibly get in. I wanted to be in the best shape I've ever been in coming back to the team, so I recommitted myself to the weight room as well as basketball court. For me, it was like an introduction to a whole new process.

I was getting up at 6:30 in the morning, and starting workouts around 8 a.m. each day. A lot of that was in the weight room doing heavy lifting, usually for around an hour and a half. Straight from there, I went to the court, and I'd usually do a basketball workout and some skills training. Later on in the summer when guys started playing again, we would play pickup and that was usually in the afternoon. Then, sometimes, I’d do another workout or shoot hoops around 8 p.m. to finish the night.

What were some of the workouts and training routines you did that helped you the most when you got back on the court?

My trainer was great to work with. He had me doing a lot of moves I’ve never done before, and it was much more than just your typical squats or lunges. We did a lot of work on my lower body, and worked to strengthen my legs, hamstrings, and glutes. For upper body, we did a lot of bench press and a lot of bodyweight workouts, too. Lots of pullups, pushups, back pulls, and we did those with resistance too. Not always with weight, but with a resistance band, and we also did some farmer’s carry exercises and full-body workouts. Some of the routines had cable rows, wood chops, hang cleans, barbell cleans, and med ball slams, which really helped me get lean and strong.

Cesar helped you overhaul your nutrition and kept you on a strict diet over the summer. How did that help your transformation?

For me personally, I'm not a big breakfast person, so having MET-Rx Big 100 bars helped, and Cesar helped me focus on the right things. Sometimes people don't know how to eat things properly to help nutrition and training, so portion control became a big focus, and that was really huge for me. What were some of the foods and meals you had while fueling your training? Do you have a favorite cheat meal when it’s time to pig out?

It was a lot of meat [laughs]. Some days it was steak, some days it was ground beef or ground turkey—with a lot of veggies. It really wasn't about eating any specific foods; it was about how I cooked the food, how it was seasoned, and how I prepared it. Like I said, I wasn't really much of a breakfast person, but I made sure to stay on track. Egg whites and avocados in the morning, to get something quick 10 minutes before my workout. Or I’d have some type of oatmeal. For a cheat meal, well, I'm a Southern boy, so I like soul food—any type of fried chicken or mashed potatoes. All that type of stuff is my favorite cheat day pick.
