😜 : A random headcanon
Nailah is naturally left handed, but she stubbornly tries to be ambidextrous. It works well enough that she can write with either hand... unfortunately her handwriting is abysmal with her right hand and barely any better with her left.

11. Do they have any inside jokes?
There's an event that's lovingly referred to as the tree incident. It happened in the Crystarium late one night, and neither is willing to let the other live it down.
Nailah, unable to sleep but unwilling to return to her room, climbed a tree near the Pendants and was relaxing in the moonlight to pass the time. She had one of her poetry books with her and quickly became absorbed in the pages, oblivious to the world around her as time ticked by and comfortable in her perceived isolation - it was a new one she'd been looking forward to for some time, and she was nervous about being teased for reading it.
At the same time G'raha (in his tenure as the Exarch) was wandering the Crystarium and enjoying some fresh air. He was taking in the sights of his beloved city, breathing in the cool night air and not entirely paying attention to where he was walking, right up until he walked under a certain someone's tree.
And then he tripped.
The sound startled Nailah so badly that she yelped, jumped about a fulm, and fell out of the tree. Directly on top of a terribly confused Exarch. Mercifully neither were badly injured, though there was much embarrassment and apologies that followed.
They tease each other for their part in the incident, Nailah for falling out of a tree and G'raha for tripping loudly, and he's managed to slip new poetry books into her things as an apology several times.

🌡: A sick headcanon
Nailah hates being sniffly, and keeps a stash of herbal teas and honey she pulls out out at the slightest hint of congestion. She's eager to share some with her friends should they start to cough, and puts extra honey in their cups to help cheer them up.

Has your OC ever experienced something that changed them irrevocably? If so, then how do they view the person they were before?
Before she was the Warrior of Light, before she was abandoned, before she awoke to her echo, Nailah was known by another name. Her mother spoke it softly and told her to keep it close, to keep it precious and safe from those who would hurt her. It was one of few constants in her early life, and one she thought she'd always have.
It's little wonder losing it hurt her so deeply.
She tries not to think about her early childhood nowadays - she's Nailah now, it doesn't matter what she was before - but she mourns her old name for what it represented. Stability, even if it eventually was a lie.

What is your character's relationship like with their body? Are they confident in who they are, or do they experience any kind of dysphoria (not just limited to gender but, if they do, feel free to explain why that is)? Do you think this relationship has the capacity to improve or worsen over time?
(this is long lol. be warned.)
Yomi has the happiest relationship with her body, relatively speaking. She is proud of being au ra, she loves the shape of her horns, and she'll trace her own scales for comfort. The only discomfort she experiences is more related to loneliness - she doesn't have auri friends in Ul'dah so she has difficulty finding scale care supplies or receives strange looks for trying to affectionately horn bonk her adoptive family. To their credit, her adoptive sibling Zezene wears a pair of catoblepas horns to help her feel less alone, which has worked surprisingly well. She's decently confident in her appearance, though it's tempered by a healthy dose of modesty. The only way for her to feel even more comfortable with herself would be to get a few auri friends, but barring that its more likely she'll stay at the same level of self confidence.
-
Zezene is generally happy with their body. They were born female, but they don't have a strong attachment to any gender identity and greatly prefer being androgynous in presentation. They've considered what life would be like in a man's body, but came to the conclusion that nothing would change for them regarding their self image if they were physically male. Luckily them being a lalafell means there's not much of a physical difference either way. They radiate an easy confidence about themself that's more sincere than any word they say, and there's not much room for that view to improve. The rare dysphoria they do feel comes more from others assuming they are female by their name and addressing them as such, but this is increasingly rare as their reputation outpaces their activities.
-
Verre views her body as a tool, albeit one that's very well worn. She's comfortable in her skin to the point of not paying attention to it most of the time - she only let Yomi mess with her hair at first because she noticed it after the fact. There is room for her self confidence to go either way, but as her story is now she becomes more confident in her abilities rather than her appearance. In her eyes, why should she care for the appearance of a wrench if it does it's job?
-
Nailah has had a rocky relationship with herself overall, and her body is no exception to this. She dislikes having her appearance commented on in any way and, fearing insincerity or mockery, quickly dismisses compliments. Mirrors have a habit of showing her the tired and scared woman she is rather than the hardened mercenary she wants others to see, and she's avoided them almost religiously for years. She sees her arms as too thin, her chest as too small, her tail as too long, her height as too short - every part of her isn't good enough in her eyes.
One of the biggest conflicts regarding how she sees her body is how she scars - or rather, how she doesn't. Her body has an incredible amount of aether which, combined with her own skill at magick, means the overwhelming majority of her injuries are healed with no visible scars. She can feel them littering her body under her fur, and if someone were to touch her they would likely feel them as well, but an outsider wouldn't see what she knows is there. She has long since lost track of where each scar is from, but each passing remark of her coming out "unscathed" from one job or another rubs in a sense of wrongness that she can't shake.
It isn't until she's well established as the Warrior of Light and started opening up to the people around her that she's started reevaluating how she sees her body - going from absolute self loathing and disgust to something approaching neutrality. She's still very uncomfortable around compliments and reflective surfaces, and formal dress events or balls inspire dread and fear like no other, but she's slowly improving.

For the character: Jealous at all?
For the mun: What are your favorite moments that happen between them?
Jealous at all?
Despite her issues, Nailah doesn't really get jealous - she's pretty understanding and probably too dense to realize G'raha's being flirted with in the first place, if it's happening at all. If someone manages to be obvious enough that she'd notice, she'd have more of a protective instinct than a jealous one.
On the other hand G'raha has a bit of a jealous streak and it's something he's worked on to curb in his own time. He knows that her time is valuable and she can't be everywhere at once, but he can't help the pang of jealousy he feels if he sees someone or something take her attention for too long.
What are your favorite moments that happen between them?
personally, i love the moments where nailah lets down her walls and is trying to be honest with g'raha - she's very bad at actually expressing herself in the moment, but he usually follows what she's saying and it's so sweet ;-; its nice seeing her be so vulnerable with someone and her receiving kindness in return.

Would your character(s) be the kind to use any social media if such were available in Eorzea? Could you see them being a mum on facebook, a shitposter on tumblr or a discourse twitter account? If not, what might their views on social media be as a whole?
Yomi would probably be a Facebook or Instagram person, with her posts all being pictures of flowers with sickeningly sweet or optimistic captions, all said with absolute sincerity. Big wholesome Facebook mom energy. She'd see social media as a cool way to interact with people she never would've met otherwise.
Zezene wouldn't admit to using social media, but would shitpost on Tumblr over no fewer than six different blogs. They see social media as all smoke and mirrors so they wouldn't take it seriously.
Verre would be akin to a social media cryptid appearing once every few years to drop the most detailed post on Reddit covering the workings of some obscure contraption that only existed in Thavnair sixty-two years ago before abruptly dropping off the face of the star again. She doesn't care about social media enough to have an opinion on it.
Nailah would go out of her way to avoid social media, she already has enough issues with people's perceptions of her as is. She'd be quite wary of social media and all the hearsay surrounding it.

35. How do they feel about the fact that they've killed a lot of people and/or things?
Nailah's been a mercenary most of her life. She knows she's good at it and carries herself as a consummate professional - it's her life or theirs and she has work to do, it's not personal.
This is what she's told herself, anyways.
Truthfully, Nailah struggles with seeing worth in herself under all the blood on her hands. There's a lot of unspoken survivor's guilt just under the surface, bubbling up whenever things are a little too quiet.

Does your OC have a notable respect for their elders? Do they believe that older people have the wisdom of experience? Or do they tend to think that older people have just had longer for their stupidity to become ingrained?
Nailah's respect is a strange thing, but she doesn't put special importance on someone's age. Time marches the same for everyone. Similarly, she doesn't hold it against people either... at first. If someone hides behind their age as a shield against criticism it'll start burning her respect away quickly, especially if it causes her more problems.
#answered asks#thank you for the ask!#oc: hrothwol#i've babbled about nailahs weird form of respect before#her respect is selfish and action based - she doesnt give a damn what stories tell of you#she only cares about how you interact with what's around her (...which is her and eventually her allies)#so as a long winded further explanation...#she calls people by their title as a starting point#and stubbornly refuses to call someone by name - in turn refusing to give her own and asking to be called whatever her title is at the time#(as example she called each of the scions just... 'scion' or 'archon' for the longest time -#- and only answered to 'wanderer' or 'adventurer' or 'warrior' depending on the job)#her weird way of showing respect ties into her lack of respect for herself#she doesn't feel like she deserves respect as Nailah so she doesn't let people call her by name - only titles#as she's gained more self respect she's lightened up on this a bit but she keeps the titles for others out of habit (and as an odd joke)#she calls someone by name both as permission to use her own and as a form of respect#...the only way to gain her respect is to leave her be and give her room to do her job#which feels like you're not doing much... but she sees it as you respecting her boundaries#...which leads back into her weird style of leaving people before she feels respected/comfy enough to give her name...#it's little wonder she doesn't gain meaningful self respect until she sticks around the scions for a long while

idol: has your OC been in a position where a lot of people were looking down on (or up to) them? how do they handle the pressure of fame? of criticism?
If it has not been answered!
As Nailah is the Warrior of Light, she's in fame's spotlight far more often than she's comfortable with. People know of her through her deeds and try to treat her like a great hero or try calling her by her name - both things that she greatly dislikes, especially from strangers.
For her, the fear of not meeting other's expectations runs rampant when she is the center of attention. To cope with this, she hides behind her "masks" and plays the role she thinks people want to see - one of a perfect weapon. She stays quiet to reinforce an illusion of stoic courage and to mask her own discomfort. Meetings or formal events she's invited to are similarly silent - she'll hold her tongue out of fear of saying the wrong thing and causing a diplomatic incident. She keeps a focused glare on her face to discourage conversation with would-be admirers and refuses gifts or special treatment of any sort.
It's not uncommon for Nailah to disappear into the wilderness for days at a time to de-stress from a city visit, both to avoid having echo visions and to get away from the perceived expectations she suffocates under. If she can't leave a city for whatever reason, she will relax in a hot soaking bath - should one be unavailable, she'll leap into the nearest body of water instead.
While external criticism does cut at her, Nailah is a far harsher critic of herself than near anyone she's met. She takes external criticism with icy efficiency, responding that she will do better before she returns to whatever job is at hand. She's remarkably level-headed about it as well, internally picking apart the statement to see if there is any truth to it and changing her behavior accordingly. Dealing with internal criticism is a much messier affair, though, as she easily spirals into self destructive tendencies in an attempt to correct mistakes or punish herself for failures.
For all her difficulties with fame, she slowly grows to see it as a tool - something Nailah can leverage to get what she wants. She will use her status to avoid even more conversations and she will rally the people around her with her titles, letting her legend bolster their courage and hopes far easier than any of her speeches could.

4. When scared, does your OC fight, flee, freeze or fawn?
12. Is your OC self-destructive? In what ways?
20. What character alignment would you consider your OC to be?
(My turn mwahahaha)
:3
4. When scared, does your OC fight, flee, freeze or fawn?
Nailah's first instinct for the longest time was to flee. She would run from anything that caused her distress, ranging from a conversation that got too personal to physically trying to run from an impending echo vision. It's taken no small amount of self discipline for her to temper this reaction, which has now shifted to somewhere between fight and flight.
12. Is your OC self-destructive? In what ways?
(answered here for Nailah, so let's see another character)
Verre's relationship with her projects could be considered self-destructive. Despite the guilt that festers inside her, she refuses to entirely give up her burning curiosity and genuine passion for engineering. She'll sabotage her works so they never see completion no matter how long she works on them, while having an intense mix of pride and shame about her skill in creating anything at all. Her schematics will miss key dimensions or intentionally mislabel materials to keep others from finishing them for her, and she disassembles the most completed works herself to keep from feeling the temptation to see if they actually work.
20. What character alignment would you consider your OC to be?
Nailah: Neutral Good to Chaotic Good, she will do what she feels is right in the end and isn't afraid to get her hands dirty to do it.
Verre: True Neutral to Neutral Good, she stays out of conflicts and keeps to her projects.
Yomi: Neutral Good, she's too innocent and purehearted to be anything else.
Zezene: Chaotic Neutral to Chaotic Good, they do what they want when they want to and look after their own along the way.

14 Associations - Nailah
tagged by @foxlin-fantasia - thank you!
animal - wolves, funnily enough. she leans into the idea of being a lone wolf who doesn't need anyone else, but the truth is she very much needs others and works best with a small group of trusted friends (much like actual wolves, she needs a pack).
color - pale blue, pale purple, or silver. she's quiet and tries to be understated, but there's shades of herself that shine through.
song - this remix of the abyss watchers theme from dark souls 3. there's a sorrow to it that just fits her, and while she will absolutely fight and take lives should the situation call for it she isn't nearly as unaffected as she seems.
number - 0. it... feels right? i guess?
day or night - dusk into night. sunsets fit her, especially with how often she says goodbye.
plant - heather, representing solitude, beauty, or protection. lavender is a close second, with devotion and distrust being associated with it.
smell - smoke and pine, sometimes petrichor.
gemstone - pearls. something unwanted that turned into something beautiful, something more? of course its her. obsidian also fits, seeing as it's historically been used in weapons.
season - late fall, when there's a good amount of frost on the fallen leaves.
place - abandoned stone buildings, partially reclaimed by nature. think places like the sildihn subterenne or delubrum reginae or parts of amdapor. they're quiet and easy for her to relax in, for better or worse.
food - warm sourdough bread. or cold sourdough bread. just... bread. versatile, occasionally foundational, rarely the centerpiece.
eorzean deity - currently Nymeia, but arguments could be made for Nald'Thal or Halone. i enjoy the thought that someone so adverse to the idea of fate would have the fate goddess as her patron, and her mercenary death dealing fits the other two very well.
eorzean element - ice or lightning. she's outwardly cold and calculating the majority of the time, keeping a distance from those around her and rebuffing attempts to know her. once you get past the frost, you see a bright mind and a compassionate heart, even if she isn't very good at expressing either.
drink - warm mulled apple cider. probably non-alcoholic. a good, cozy drink that warms you from the inside, though it's not the most commonly reached for.

8 & 16 for the ship asks pls!
8. Do they have any favorite activities to do together?
Nailah enjoys just talking with G'raha, as she finds him an enchanting storyteller and will seek him out for lessons on nearly anything she comes across. So far she's managed to stump him twice on her questions, which she uses as an excuse for a follow up conversation later.
G'raha is, of course, very fond of traveling with Nailah. Wherever their duties take them, as long as they're together he's having the time of his life. He'll keep an ear out for curious rumors, eager to try and find one enticing enough for their next adventure.
16. What’s their favorite “domestic bliss” moment? Do they cook/clean together? Do they like to go out shopping together?
They've not had many domestic moments together, what with how busy Nailah is and how easily distracted G'raha is. From the few that they have had, they've both enjoyed having a simple breakfast together as the sun rises and their days start.
As far as shopping goes, Nailah normally isn't a big fan of busy markets. There's far too many people for her to feel safe. When she's with G'raha she'll tough out as long as she can, but their trips are often brief and commonly ended when Nailah's echo starts going off. Until that point though, she's quite happy seeing G'raha's reactions to various goods in the merchant stalls and listening to his various rambles about what he sees.

What song would you associate with your OC/WoL? ^^
Nailah
Tides is Nailah at her lowest, angriest, most burnt out self. She wants so badly to run away, to run far from the bloodshed and strife she's so commonly dragged into, to just be left alone and forgotten - but she can't. She's trapped, either through obligation or fear of abandonment, and all she can do is scream her frustration into the waves.
Verre
She's a hard one for me to pin down in music, but C:\\AR?A_M4TH has the vibes down really well. It's oppressive and oddly calm and the steady looping melody reminds me of a clock alarm - Verre's trapped between her guilt and obsessive curiosity. Then the drums fade out, she's happy and free for just a moment... until they crash back in, destroying the looping melody and leaving this dissonant emptiness. She can never go back.
Zen
Mimic - Rage and Scream is hands down the best song I've found that captures their chaotic, almost taunting persona. It sounds like a calculated car crash in the best of ways and Zen's orchestrated unpredictability really shines through.
Yomi
Outset Island has a carefree, slightly naive vibe that reminds me so much of Yomi. She's a little meandering, very optimistic, and terribly out of her depth when it comes to most things - what better fits that than a cozy starter town theme?

Also! [THE MOON] - What is one question they would do anything to get an answer to, no matter the cost?

What is one question they would do anything to get an answer to, no matter the cost?
"Who am I?"
Nailah has a lot of identity issues and no idea how to address them. She's terrified of potentially disappointing the people around her by just being herself and not being the Warrior of Light or the wanderer or whatever other person she thinks they want her to be, so she's swallowed what little bits of herself she knows to keep them safe. She's kept them so safe, in fact, she's forgotten most of what she enjoys, most of what she finds worth living for, and spends all the way through post Endwalker clinging to the scraps of herself that slip through her masks - a solid impartial answer to who she is both terrifies and entices her greatly.
What is their color palette/ what colors do you associate with them?
Pale purples, pale blues, silvers, and ash grey for now... but this is all up to what Nailah's end design will be. Her general vibe is smoke and ice, but I've started associating her with pearls for some reason, so might as well toss those in, too.

40.) Who or what could cheer up your OC/WoL after a rough week?
Nailah's got a secret sweet tooth - small sweets and treats given genuinely are more than enough to get a tired smile from her after a long week. A hot cup of tea with plenty of honey is similarly appreciated, and if there's coincidental stormy weather Nailah's happy as a clam.
When it comes to who can cheer her up, Nailah's a lot more picky. Her definition of a rough week generally means she's had more than her fill of being around people, so she usually holes herself up in a quiet corner in the middle of nowhere to decompress. There's very few people she wants to talk to when she's like this, but she has an obvious soft spot for G'raha - she's noticeably happier after spending time with him.
