You know what?

They throw around the fact that Scully and Mulder meeting was fate and that they’re soulmates so much through The X-Files but we NEVER cover how those two work and what they do is not possible without Skinner.

If Skinner—a man who notoriously let them off the hook and aided them to the point of being forcefully separated from them by the fucking government because his favoritism was that fucking blatant—wasn’t their boss, they wouldn’t have been able to discover or accomplish HALF of what they did. If Skinner wasn’t there, they would have been fired long ago. If Skinner wasn’t there, Scully wouldn’t have found the man who murdered her sister. If Skinner wasn’t there, Mulder would have rotted away in his grave until he was replaced by an alien. If Skinner wasn’t there, he wouldn’t have been able to protect them from CSM or Spender or Krycek or help them in their search for the truth.

Without Scully or Mulder, Skinner would have never had the courage to go against the very government he had blindly trusted in his youth. He never would have allowed himself to question his distrust. He never would have become a better man.

Fate brought them to Skinner just as much as fate brought those two together. No one else would have done what Skinner did for them.

Fate brought the three of them together.

The X Files AU where Skinner is a fisherman. He basically lives on the water. He’s seen all sorts of things in his life and, sure, he could try to explain the more odd and frankly freakish things, but he prefers not to. He would rather ignore it. He finds it a bit hard to brush off the strangely cursed waters when he pulls in his net for the day and finds two mermaids caught up in his trap, ensnared and terrified. He’s careful to cut them out but it takes time to soothe their wild thrashing—and the red head was rather bitey. The net had caused more damage than he thought: torn fins and cuts and rope burns throughout their bodies. The brunette was worse off. Walter couldn’t in good conscience release them without patching them up. Even if it would cost him a few fingers to do so. Convincing them that he was a friend was hard to do but easily accomplished when he found he could buy them with fish, earning enough trust to hear their names: Dana and Fox.

Dana visits Mulder in his cell at 7:12 AM to tell him how scared she is of losing him and says he has no idea how much has been lost already. Mulder corrects her and says he does, Skinner told him what happened to their son, William.

Under normal circumstances, Skinner sharing that kind of information without Scully’s knowledge or permission would be a HUGE violation of their friendship—but Scully didn’t show any signs of being upset that Skinner had told Mulder before she could. She wasn’t angry about Skinner sharing the information because Skinner isn’t an outsider to the relationship, he’s part of it.
