Do you ever hate certain gags simply because they don't look like they'd be effective?

In all honesty, no.

I have a personal preference for aesthetic over effectiveness when it comes to my gags. For example, cleave gags are my absolute favourites, but unless they’re knotted or stuffed, they’re pretty ineffective at muffling sound. I like them really thin, which is not effective at all.

Effective gags are usually either very tight or stuffed to the nines. My personal preferences for gags is that as much of the captive’s face be as visible as possible in as much of its natural state as possible, so that doesn’t lend itself to good silencing. It’s also why I have a dislike of OTN gags, because they cover too much of their face.

So, TL:DR, I have an aesthetic preference for gags more than how effective they are. The only time you’ll ever see me complain about ineffective gags is when they are an OTN that is literally just a glorified bandana.
