A few different models of Panzer III. The Panzer III saw battle from the invasion of France to the Surrender of the Nazis. With first just a 37mm cannon, but later upgraded with the 5 cm KwK 38 L/42.

Best Italian tank of WW2? Considering how little development they actually had, prototypes and drawing board designs are acceptable here?
Separate but related question, best non-major Axis and Allied powers tank of WW2? (i.e. outside of US, Britain, France, and China for the Allies, and outside of Germany, Italy, and Japan for the Axis)
Obscure tanks go!
As far as Italian tanks go, I'm going to say the Carro Armato p26/40. It was a fairly capable tank, with a capable drivetrain, a moderately good main gun, and pretty alright armor. It does kinda fall short though, because it only has a crew of 4, making the commander serve double duty, meaning that he doesn't have his whole head in the game.
Now, as to the second question:
My semi-cheat answer is the Czech ČKD LT vz. 38, which technically was adopted by the Germans as the Pz.Kpfw 38(t). It's a genuinely good tank, that I'd put up against any early-war light tank and give it decent odds.
My non-cheat answer is the Polish 9TP, which was a worthy competitor to the Panzer 1 and other tankettes, using a Bofors 37mm AT gun. It was a neat light tank, and I'd love to see how Polish rank development would have progressed, had it been allowed to progress to the planned 10TP and 14TP, instead of spending 40 years under the Soviet thumb.

How often does a tank need maintenance? Are they built to last in the worst conditions, or do they require specific materials to be kept in good state?
It honestly varies. With modern tanks, they're designed to be reliable for long periods of time, but when they require maintenance it's often more of a job for specially trained engineers. With tanks of the WW2 era, they tended to vary much more. Early war tanks like the Panzer III and IV, as well as the 38(t), tended to be very reliable with few problems (although the 38(t) did tend to have a habit of throwing its tracks, but this was relatively easy to repair). These tanks were designed for the long, continuous advance that the German Blitzkrieg tactics demanded, so as such they were made so they could be repaired with minimal tools and training. The M4 Sherman and T-34 also followed this, being reliable and easy to repair. German tanks of the late war such as the Tiger, Tiger II, and Panther all tended to be much more unreliable due to the heavy armour and large weapons straining the engine and suspension. While they could still be repaired, their unreliability hindered their range, rendering the Blitzkrieg tactics that were so effective in the early stages of the war to be completely unusable.
There's also tank destroyers to look at. Whilst the StuGIII and JagdPanzer IV were both casemates on the Panzer III and Panzer IV hulls respectively, and therefore had their good performance and reliability, the Jagdpanzer 38(t), also known as the Hetzer, had an offset gun. This lead to one side of the suspension being put under more stress than the other, which caused performance loss on that side. While the issues weren't as severe as they were on the Jagdtigers and Jagdpanther, they were still there, which caused the Hetzer to have to be repaired more often than usual.
During the late war, the allies also experimented with newer designs, resulting in tanks like the M26 Pershing and IS-3. These were the allied equivalents of the Tiger, having heavier armour and bigger guns than the medium tanks like the M4 Sherman and T-34 that made up the bulk of allied armour. As such, they also suffered from reliability issues, however these issues for the most part weren't as severe as those that afflicted the Wehrmacht armour, due to the allies having access to far more resources with which to construct their weapons.

Il 2 sturmovik battle of stalingrad cursor up
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Defend coastal ports on dawn patrols, escort friendly bombers over enemy territory and help suppress AAA batteries, but always be on the lookout for enemy fighters! Experience fierce aerial combat in the skies above the picturesque Northern Caucasian region of the Soviet Union. Your regiment is deployed to Slavyanskaya airfield, near the town of same name. You are assigned to the 57th GIAP, which was part of the 216th Mixed Aviation Division of the 4th Air Army, an elite Guards unit. Meeting Spitfires in the skies of the Kuban region came as quite a surprise to the Luftwaffe! Your regiment will be flying the famous British-built Spitfire Mk.Vb which was loaned to the Red Air Force via the Lend Lease program. The campaign features missions inspired by the Soviet 37th and 56th Armies attack on the German 44th Army Corps west of the city of Krymskaya. Your character is a young Russian pilot from Siberia serving on the North Caucasus Front in late May 1943.

This campaign requires IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad.Īchtung Spitfire! is a 20-mission single-player Scripted Campaign featuring a fictional storyline that is inspired by historical events. Time frame: November 29th - December 25th, 1942Īvailable aircraft: IL-2 AM-38 (model 1942) At the final stage of the campaign you will take part in the hardest battles on the Myshkova River, which determined the outcome of the entire German counter-offensive and sealed the fate of the German army trapped near Stalingrad. You are expected to search and destroy German transport planes in the air, to strike at airfields and troops inside the cauldron, and to conduct reconnaissance along the Stalingrad front. During this time-frame, Soviet command had to simultaneously solve several problems: disrupt enemy airborne re-supply operations, contain 284,000 German and Romanian troops who have been encircled, and repel a very dangerous counter-strike by the German 4th Panzer Army from the area of Kotelnikovo (Operation "Winter Storm"). This new historical campaign is dedicated to the Soviet ground attack aviation regiments during one of the most intense episodes of the Battle of Stalingrad in December 1942. This campaign requires IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Bodenplatte. The custom radio messages are in English language only. Note: Turn off the in-game radio to suppress the default radio messages to clearly hear the custom radio messages in this campaign.

This campaign features realistic 9th Air Force operations, as well as custom radio calls. You’ll fly close air support, armed recon, supply interdiction and air to air missions and all events are taken from, or inspired by the actual events from the 365th Fighter Group history. Air operations from the Battle of Aachen, through the Battle of the Bulge, and the German air attack on New Year’s Day 1945 and beyond are represented. Flying the P-47D, or "Jug" as it was affectionately known to its pilots, the player will join the 365th FG / 388th FS and take part in supporting General Hodges’ First Army. The 365th was instrumental in supporting American ground forces that opposed the German Ardennes Offensive which would become known as the “Battle of the Bulge” in late 1944-45. History books called them the "Hell Hawks", the USAAF called them as the 365th Fighter Group, the Germans called them a terror. This campaign is inspired by the exploits of the 365th Fighter Group (388th Fighter Squadron) over Europe in the Autumn/Winter of 1944-45. This campaign requires IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Kuban. In spring 1943, the tide of the air war is slowly turning against the Luftwaffe, are you up to the challenge? Can you halt the Soviet advance? Your opponents are mountainous terrain, strong anti-aircraft fire and numerous Soviet, American and British-made fighters. Your objective is to attack artillery batteries, vehicle convoys, armored columns, airfields and battle formations of the advancing enemy. Staffel of the German ground attack unit II./Sch.G 1 and you will fly a modified attack variant of the newest Fw 190 A-5 fighter plane. You've just been appointed flight commander in 5. One of the largest and fiercest air battles on the Eastern front is ready to explode. Both sides prepare for upcoming operations and are rapidly increasing the number or aircraft they can put into action over the Kuban. The German 17th Army holds the Kuban bridgehead firmly, repelling all Soviet troops attacks. Spring 1943, the final stage of the Battle for the Caucasus.
