#2163 - Paropsis atomaria - Dotted Paropsine Leaf Beetle
Tumblr media
I've blogged about the eggs and larvae before, when I found them years ago in Uranquinty. Here's an adult. It's become a pest in Eucalyptus plantations on the West Coast of the US and in Taiwan.

@sarcasm-n-insomnia submitted: Hello! I am pretty sure this is a Paropsis atomaria (and inaturalist seems inclined to agree), but I wanted to double check. This is in Los Angeles, CA, USA.
I first noticed this species a few months ago and there seemed to be relatively few sightings of it in LA at the time, but now it seems like there have been a whole lot more of them (according to inaturalist at least).
The first sighting was I believe in December of 2021 in my area and now they are all over the place. I was wondering if you are at all familiar with this species since I read online that they can be a tree pest.
It is currently listed as introduced in my area, but what would it take for it to be considered invasive and how long would it take for that legislative change to take effect? Is there something I should be doing instead of just taking pictures for inaturalist?
Thanks in advance for all your help!
Yes your ID is correct, but I don’t know anything about this species or their affect on non-native ecosystems. If they’re that newly introduced, it’s possible no one knows yet what their long term impact could be.

#1643 - Paropsis geographica
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another Paropsine Leaf Beetle. This species is more strongly speckled in specimens from the western end of its range, as here, than over in the SE corner of the country. I shook this pair of a Eucalyptus tree in Herron, south of Perth.

Hello, I hope you're well! My sister has been spotting these little guys, and we aren't sure what they are! I've tried looking it up, but I cannot identify them! They're in Southern California, United States! Thank you so much 💕
Looks like definitely leaf beetle larvae, and most likely Paropsis atomaria. Someone submitted an adult a few posts ago.

#1649 - Paropsisterna galatea
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another Paropsine Leaf Beetle, found by me in a teatree bush next to an urban lake here in Perth.
P. galatea is one of the few Paropsine Leaf Beetles that don’t eat Eucalyptus - its diet is exclusively Leptospermum, as does P. obliterata, some Paropsides and two Paropsis. There’s also a few species where the diet isn’t eucalyptus, but wasn’t identified when the insect was collected.
