QAL By the Sea - Final Round-Up
Welcome to the setting ideas post and the linky party for the Segment 3 Prize Giveaway and the Grand Prize Giveaway of the QAL By the Sea!
By now you've downloaded all 4 block patterns for Segment 3 of our quilt along, and have made or are making all your blocks. If you’ve missed some, click here to catch up!
Although you don’t need to sew your blocks into a quilt or even sew them into small projects in order to enter any of our giveaways you might want to.
If you plan on making a quilt, I’ve got some setting suggestions for you.
If you’d rather make projects instead of a quilt check out my project ideas for Segment 1 and Segment 2.
Setting Idea 1
In this setting, I added 6” side borders in a bright blue, and 6” finished Snails Trails blocks in several shades of blue. By rotating the blocks, it looks like rolling waves. At the top of the quilt I added some applique to depict a rolling ocean, a tiny sail boat, and a bright sun.
Setting Idea 2
In this setting, I moved the applique banner to the bottom and used a pinky orange batik to create a sunset. For the side borders, I placed several 6” squares of batiks from orange to red to purple. The top border is a strip of dark purple.
If you make your quilt using either setting suggestion, I’d love to see it! You can link up a photo any Wednesday here on my blog (in my weekly Wait Loss Wednesday post) or share one in my Facebook group. If you share a photo through your social media, please tag me so I’ll see it by adding @inquiringquilter to your post text.
Segment 3 Wrap Up
Did you enjoy Segment 3? I sure did!
In this segment, you learned how to sew a curved sail, add raw edge applique and add embroidered touches to a block. Great job!
Here are my four blocks from Segment 3. I can’t wait to see yours!

QAL By the Sea - Block 9 Sailboat
Hi! Welcome to Block 9 of QAL By the Sea - Sailboat!
You’ll find the details of the quilt along on the QAL By the Sea page. Here’s the short version: we’re presenting the blocks for this quilt along in segments. To win a prize, make all the blocks from that segment, then upload a photo of them at the end of that segment.
This is Block 9 in the quilt along and the first block in Segment 3. There are four blocks in this segment. To enter for the Segment 3 prize, you must finish all four Segment 3 blocks and post a photo of them. Click here to view the QAL schedule and to learn more about it.
To enter for the Grand Prize at the end of the quilt along, you’ll need to make all 12 blocks in the quilt along. You don’t need to make a quilt or any other project using the blocks although we’d love for you to! At the end of the quilt along, we will provide several setting suggestions if you’d like to make a quilt. In my Segment 1 Round Up and Segment 2 Round Up posts I provided a project suggestion if you’d rather make projects with your blocks. I’ll provide a final suggestion in my Segment 3 Round Up post.
Block 9: Sailboat
This week’s block is a sailboat with lots of cute embellishments. The designer of Block 9 is Karen @ Tu-Na Quilts, Travels, and Eats. You can download the pattern there.
Here’s my version of Karen’s block.
My Tips and Tutorials for Making This Block
Here are my tips for making the block.
my Fabric Pull
I’m using Island Batiks for this quilt along because of their beauty.
I wanted my sailboat to be on a stormy sea, so I set off to find appropriate rough sea and sky fabrics. I found the rough sea fabric first, and immediately paired it with the waves I’d used in another block. I really wanted a blue grey stormy daylight sky but couldn’t find one I liked that went well with my sea fabrics so I went with a night sky.
Next, I searched for a reddish purple to tie this block into the other blocks colorwise. Finally, I selected an off-white for the sails.
Note: When pulling fabrics for the boat, look for a matching or coordinating ribbon for the flag.
Again, I’m using Island Batiks for my block. Here are the details:
Sky
#121715580 Wheat Ocean (Blue Moon collection)
Ocean
Ocean Breaks Blue (Island Waves collection) Blue (Stash Builder)
Boat
Red bamboo scrap
Mast
#111923083 Mosaic Lines Brownie (Clockworks collection)
Sails
Moo Milk (Neutrals collection)
Thread
Aurifil 50 wt. #2605 Grey
Cutting the fabrics
My first tip is to do what Karen says and to print out her labels and use them to keep your fabrics organized. There are a ton of pieces in this block and believe me, organization is key to success.
My printer was being serviced so I made my own labels.
Note: I decided to use two fabrics for my Ocean so I cut the waves 1” x 13” and the sea at 2-1/2” x 13”.
Making the Sails
Karen’s instructions are clear and if you follow them you’ll have no trouble making this block. When making the sails I have a few tips.
First, before you turn the sails right side out, clip the point to reduce the seam allowance.
To turn the sail and point out that point, use a blunt object such as a knitting needle or point turning tool.
Be sure to trim the excess seam allowance at the top of each sail to reduce the bulk in the seam when they are sewn into the block.
trimming the Flag
To trim the ribbon flag, I folded it in half and used my ruler at a 45-degree angle to cut it. Worked great! Be sure to use Fray Check to keep the ribbon end from fraying.
Basting
You’ll use a lot of basting in the construction of this block. Basting is stitching that’s used to temporarily hold something in place until it can be sewn permanently. Basting is normally removed—in this case it won’t be so there are a couple of things you need to know.
The basting you’ll use in this block is a stitch of normal length and not an elongated stitch that can be easily removed. You want to use a regular stitch so that it’s strong enough to keep the 3-D pieces in place until caught in the seam.
For this block you’ll baste within the seam allowance (at about 1/8” in this case) so that the basting stitches don’t show.
My only tip here is to be sure to stitch within that 1/4” seam allowance so your basting doesn’t show later when the seam is sewn. Again, you won’t be removing the basting stitches so this part is important.
Sewing Flip corners
This block uses a technique called Flip Corners to create the angles on the boat. With a flip corner, you draw a diagonal line, place the square on the corner of a larger piece RST, sew on the line, then flip the top piece back towards the corner, creating a right angle.
To sew flip corners correctly, take the time to carefully mark the diagonal line on the back of the flip corner squares. I use a regular pencil, a small ruler, and my sandboard to do that. A sandboard really helps to prevent the square from slipping so you can mark the diagonally correctly.
Instead of sewing right on the line you've drawn, sew just a bit to the right of it (closer to the corner) as you see here. Sewing the seam just a bit short of center makes a bit more room for the fold, so when you press the flip square back towards the corner it will fit perfectly.
With flip corners, you typically trim the seam allowance after pressing the corner back. There are two schools of thought with this. If you don't trim, then you always have the bottom fabric (which is cut to size) to help you construct the block properly. If you do trim the seam allowance, you will have a lot less bulk in the seams. And you can always trim the finished unit to size (which I highly recommend if you do trim the seam allowance).
Add the rigging
Karen suggests that you add rigging to your boat using running stitches or a chain stitch (stem stitch) and 6 strands of embroidery floss. Here’s a tutorial on how to do the stem stitch.
I chose to add twine as my rigging to match the twine I used in another block (the Flags block). To do that, I simply sewed the block. When I got to the step of top stitching the sails to create a curved edge, I tucked the twine under each sail and stitched it in place. Then I unsewed a bit of the seam where I wanted the twine to end, poked it into the hole in the seam and then stitched it closed again.
Add a Name if You Like
It’s always fun to name a boat. You can add a name using a backstitch, or by printing a name on photo fabric and sewing it to the boat.
I cut the name Island Batik from a fabric tie that’s used to tie up fat quarter collections. As an Island Batik Ambassador for several years, I have several of these. I sewed the name to the back of the boat.
How do you like SS Island Batik?
TRIM YOUR BLOCK
After you’ve added embellishments to your block, give it a good pressing then trim to it’s final size—12-1/2”. Add the button to the mast after quilting.
Thanks for the Tips! Where do I get the pattern?
Drop by Karen’s blog (the Block Designer) to download your free Boat block pattern. Hurry! The pattern is only available for free until the end of the quilt along.
