My thoughts on the game:
- vlatko didnt rly know what he was doing and he needs to stop being happy with draws
- usa were so lucky portugal hit that post
- more subs earlier please, there were too little too late
- team culture/mentality has changed. these players looked like they were playing to just survive the group
- KO was right to be so pissed. coach kelley when
- usa is fucked against sweden
- they dont fight for the win anymore. they looked as if they gave up in the second half
- this is the first time ive seen the us come out worse after half
- vlatko acts like making subs costs him an arm and a leg
- players arent working well together. theres almost like no communication and a lot of bunching up, hell ertz almost gave her teammate a concussion
- usa’s play was very lackluster. no connection, no finishing, no passion, nothing really was a postive in that game
- there was no urgency which confused the shit out of me. the usa were playing to get out of the group and they didnt even bother pressing portugal. im assuming thats more vlatkos decision and. yikes
- vlatko is drawing his way into losing his job
- you would not assume this team is trying to three-peat
- ref was very confusing and not consistent at all with her calls. roses yellow was very very harsh but a portugeuse player can get away with stepping on sophia smith.
- ref did get mildly better towards the end
- what was going on in midfield after those last subs. sonnett at the eight, andi still in??? jj still in d? so confused
- we need jj in midfield.
- i miss broon, christen, and sammy so bad. i miss the ‘19 team in general
- convinced an average football manager player could do better
- there needed to be better finishing and better balls in. alex’s movement was good first half but she couldnt get on target for her life
- this wasnt worth staying up for
Might add individual player thoughts later

biggest 'what if?' in sidgeno era pens history?
well, the obvious is 'what if sidney crosby never missed almost two seasons with a concussion', isn't it? the 2010-2011 season was shaping up to be the best of sid's career—go look at his point totals and point streaks. he was on his way to doing something really special that season before he was headhunted during the winter classic. where would he be in goals and points if his game total was anywhere close to ovechkin's? and, because of his absence and then geno's knee injury, we'll also never know what that team was capable of, how far they could have gone.
my own personal second-place 'what if' is 'what if goaltending in the 2013 stanley cup playoffs doesn't collapse'. that was an UNBELIEVABLE team, and i'll never be swayed from thinking that they would have won the cup that year if their goaltending had stood the test.
my third-place 'what if' is 'what if kuhnhackl's shot in OT of game 6 round 2 goes in instead of hitting the post'. can that pittsburgh team, exhausted after two short summers and with increasingly shaky goaltending, go on one last miracle run through tampa and vegas to three-peat? i think they had a damn good shot, at the very least.
what do you guys think? anyone have any other 'what ifs'?

Former NHL players Joe Murphy, Stephen Peat, Matt Johnson, who all have been homeless in recent years, among those who accepted settlement in NHL concussion lawsuit.
They get $22K, possible treatment and relinquish any future claims vs the NHL.
Players in settlement deal

The NHL struck a blow to the concussion lawsuit brought by former players earlier this summer, and is now attempting to work out a settlement. The lawsuit began five years ago with players alleging that the league’s inadequate and outdated handling of concussions negatively affected their health.
Earlier this summer, a judge in Minnesota ruled that the case could not proceed as a class action lawsuit (meaning that 5,000 former players will not automatically be added to the lawsuit, and would have to file independently).
Subsequently, TSN obtained transcripts from a recent court hearing where the judge comments on attempts to reach a “private resolution.”
The NHL is trying to settle now in order to avoid the hundreds of individual lawsuits that could be brought against them. 138 players have already filed and 150 more have retained lawyers. The first case will likey be that of Steve Montador, who passed away at the age of 35, and whose autopsy showed that his “brain was decaying due to the head hits he endured during his NHL career.”
Former Washington Capitals enforcer Stephen Peat has struggled with mental health, which his family believes is “rooted in brain trauma sustained on the ice in so many fights.” They had been “closely tracking the class-action lawsuit against the N.H.L. brought by players saying that the league concealed information about the dangers of concussions.”
While the denial of the class action suit was certainly a blow to the players, it could end up working in their favor. TSN spoke with Jodi Balsam, a former lawyer for the NFL, who explains why the NHL may be making this move now.
“They’ve won a fairly consequential pre-trial ruling,” Balsam said. “With that win, the NHL is in the best settlement posture it will be in a while. It may be the best moment for the NHL to consider settling.
“If the NHL decides to go to trial on all these cases, they still have to go through further discovery and depositions, and then prepare to try hundreds of individual cases across the country. Maybe the NHL is spread thin doing that.
“As things stand, the NHL may have to eventually go into court facing hundreds of cases across the country,” she said. “This case is like tobacco where lawyers tried to form a class action and failed because every smoker had a different story and health background. Then lawyers were able to go into courts across America, play to different juries, and have the opportunity to win a precedent-setting case. Juries are unpredictable. Every trial is a crapshoot.”
As more players step forward and share their stories, pressure increases on the NHL to improve its handling of hits to the head during games and concussion protocol and treatment afterwards.

Game balls from the Saints 24-23 heart stopper over Baltimore
Two more milestones for an icon, along with a hard fought victory.
And then there were none. Drew Brees has now defeated every team in the NFL during his brilliant career. Only Brett Favre and Peyton Manning had accomplished that feat before him. Brees, who completed 73% of his passes for 212 yards without an interception yet again, also threw for his 500th career touchdown pass, hitting Benjamin Watson during the second quarter. Manning, Favre, and Tom Brady are the only others to have reached that lofty feat. The Saints faced an even bigger challenge on the field though, in the AFC North leading Baltimore Ravens. In a game that resembled a heavyweight fight, both teams exchanged body shots, and every down was a fierce brawl for yardage.
Although the game was not pretty statistically, like most Raven games, it was not lacking in impressive performances. Wideout Michael Thomas fought through tough Baltimore coverage to catch 7 passes and a score. Alvin Kamara was again stymied as a receiver, but led all rushers with 64 hard fought yards and a touchdown. The Saints defensive line was again strong against the run, and provided some key pressures on Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco. New Orleans linebackers Demario Davis and A.J. Klein were again standouts, and Davis looks like a potential Pro Bowler. The Saints secondary, despite a few breakdowns, also had some key passes defensed against the dangerous Baltimore receivers. Here are some of the biggest standouts from this thrilling interconference win.
OFFENSIVE LINE
The Saints entered the game without their starting left guard Andrus Peat, out with a concussion. They would also be without top reserve Jermon Bushrod, who remained home with his family after the tragic loss of their baby daughter. (Our prayers and thoughts go out to the Bushrod family). Peat's replacement, Josh Leribeus, would go down in the 3rd quarter with a leg injury. Brees was sacked just one time, and was kept mostly clean from a fierce Baltimore pass rush. Rush yards were an intense battle, but the Saints would forge out 134 yards on the ground on 39 carries. The size and athleticism of the Ravens front line were arguably the biggest challenge to date for the New Orleans protectors. The way in which they handled the challenge bodes extremely well for the powerful defensive fronts that the team will face in the upcoming weeks.
WIL LUTZ and THOMAS MORSTEAD
This was a battle between four of the best punters and placekickers in the league. Ravens punter Sam Koch placed two of his three punts inside the 20-yd. line yesterday, including a brilliantly placed kick downed at the New Orleans 1-yd line. Morstead would counter by booming a 52-yd. punt during the game, and averaging 44 yards per punt. Lutz, the NFL Special Teams Player of the Month in September, nailed a 39-yd. 4th quarter field goal in swirling winds that would wind up providing the Saints margin of victory. Lutz was actually recommended to the New Orleans coaches by Ravens coach John Harbaugh, after impressing them while on their 2016 training camp roster. Baltimore instead chose to keep Justin Tucker, who has made 90% of his field goal attempts and had never missed an extra point in his seven year career. With 24 seconds to play against New Orleans, after his team had just completed an impressive 81-yd. drive to seemingly send the game into overtime, Tucker shanked the extra point attempt however, giving the Saints a thrilling comeback win. It was the second time this season that an opponent's kicking miscues helped New Orleans to victory. Two field goal misses would assist them in a week two over Cleveland.
Morstead continues to be one of the most reliable punters in the league, and Lutz has blossomed into one of the most accurate kickers in the league. Both are valuable weapons in any close game, and assets that every Saint fan should feel fortunate to have on the team.
SEAN PAYTON
Payton implemented a physical and aggressive game plan to match the physicality of their opponent in this game. The Saints would go on fourth down 4 times on their opening drive, including a fake punt conversion and another successful attempt in their own territory. New Orleans remained aggressive throughout the contest, and coach Payton, like Brees, was able to notch his first victory against the Ravens. Payton's team remained tough in a hostile environment, and they won a contest more suited to Baltimore's preferred style of game.
The Saints overcame adversity like a championship team. They bounced back from a failed 4th down near the Ravens goal line, along with breakdowns in their pass defense that led to a momentum stealing Baltimore touchdown to end the first half. Baltimore had not allowed a point during the second half of the season, but the Saints scored 17 fourth quarter points to erase a ten point deficit. Sean Payton's New Orleans Saints were already known to be a team of skill and firepower. This game also revealed them to be a team of toughness and resilience, a combination found in every champion.

A few star players will miss Week 1 in the NFL while dealing with injuries. And Le’Veon Bell will miss the Steelers’ game against the Browns as he continues his holdout.
The first Sunday of the NFL regular season has arrived and there’s a lot of exciting football to look forward to this afternoon and evening.
Unfortunately, quite a few players will be missing from the Week 1 action while dealing with injuries. Oh, and there’s Le’Veon Bell, who has yet to report in Pittsburgh as he looks to make it clear how unhappy he is about playing under the franchise tag for the second straight year. His failure to report by Saturday cost him nearly $1 million.
Joey Bosa won’t be playing in the Chargers’ season opener against the Chiefs. He’s dealing with his second foot injury this summer and Los Angeles ruled him out on Friday. Also missing from that game will be Kansas City safety Eric Berry, who suffered a heel injury on August 11. He’s not ready for action after also missing all but one game last season with a torn Achilles.
Over on the east coast, Ryan Tannehill isn’t expected to have DeVante Parker to throw to as the Dolphins wide receiver continues his recovery from a broken finger. Kenny Stills and Danny Amendola will be Tannehill’s top receivers as the quarterback returns from a 2017 ACL injury.
Here are the players confirmed out for Sunday’s action:

Tweet of the Day
This Tweet is a few days old, but we’re making an exception as Shaquem Griffin is about to start in his first NFL game, alongside his brother Shaquill. The Griffin brothers are both on the Seahawks defense and played college football together at UCF. One of the big differences between them is that Shaquem has only one hand. That’s due to a condition with which he was born that ultimately cause him to get his left hand amputated at the age of four.
Shaquem’s story is wonderful as he’s defied the odds to not only be drafted, but make a 53-man roster in his rookie year and start in Week 1 for Seattle. We can’t wait to see his NFL career begin this afternoon. You can also check him out in Nike’s new ad.

Fox news
With playoff hopes within the steadiness, the Steelers will have their No. 1 receiver aid within the lineup nowadays.
Pittsburgh huge receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster (knee) is active and may well maybe maybe also simply play for the first time in 5 games on Sunday against the Jets.
Smith-Schuster final played in Week 11 in his crew's 21-7 loss to the Browns whereby he left the game injured.
Other files we're monitoring ahead of Sunday's Week 16 games:
» It appears the Philadelphia Eagles shall be missing a key weapon of their pivotal matchup against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.
Huge receiver Nelson Agholor is no longer anticipated to play, a provide tells NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.

The Eagles (7-7) and Cowboys (7-7) will square off at Lincoln Monetary Enviornment in Philadelphia. A Dallas victory would clinch the NFC East title for the Cowboys whereas a Philly buy would give the Eagles the within note to the division crown.
»  Arizona Cardinals huge receiver Christian Kirk (ankle) is anticipated to play against the Seahawks, a provide tells Rapoport. He modified into once listed as questionable.
»  Baltimore Ravens left tackle Ronnie Stanley (concussion) has cleared the concussion protocol and is active to play against the Cleveland Browns.

some thoughts on the Penguins' slow decline from grace over the last 2 years:
this post was precipitated by the news today that Zachary Lauzon, former Penguins 2017 2nd-round pick (#51 overall) has retired due to post-concussion symptoms. from a human perspective, definitely feel bad that this guy had to retire from hockey due to such an injury, and here's to hoping it doesn't affect his future health.
that being said, he was part of a trade that was a product of a fucking stupid decision from Jim Rutherford that has cost the Penguins a lot over the last 2 years: specifically, his impression that the Penguins somehow needed to "win better and/or differently," or some bullshit. he didn't like how the championship-winning Penguins were seemingly getting pushed around by "bigger players" (despite the lesson from 2016 being "speed, speed, speed"), probably because of Tom Wilson's headhunting on Zach Aston-Reese. my thoughts on Tom Wilson's playstyle are another discussion entirely, but he somehow managed to get under the skin of not only the Penguins as a team of hockey players, but as an organization in the National Hockey League. stunning. Jim Rutherford dismantled a pretty good team capable of three-peating because he didn't think they were winning the right way. *sigh*.
as an aside, I do love Ryan Reaves. he's a funny guy who exudes an actual personality. he's a player of color, the number in the NHL of which I can count on both hands and feet. yeah, he's done some tacky shit off the ice, but nobody's perfect. but, man, he's not a great hockey player relative to the talent level of the rest of the league. trading for him was not a very smart idea.
you can argue hindsight is 20/20, but we all thought at the time that Oskar Sundqvist was going to be a decent player and that he wasn't worth Ryan Reaves and trading down. would he have become what he did in Mike Sullivan's system? maybe not. but, even if, he would've been cheaper than, I dunno, Brandon Tanev.
the pick, man. again, nothing against Zachary Lauzon as a person. but, as a hockey player, jesus, Jim, couldn't you have taken somebody who put up more points in junior? most people who can't put up points in junior have an even harder time putting up points at pro levels. you wanted a right-shot defender that could skate well and put up points? Conor Timmins went at #32 to the Avs! you wanted a left-shot defender that's a BIG BOI and HITS and also puts up points? Nic Hague went at #34 to the Golden Knights! you could've even taken Josh Brook or Ian Mitchell at 51! but nooooooo you had to take the guy who won QMJHL defensive defender of the year award. even Marc-Ëdouard Vlasic put up points in junior. of course, points don’t really define defenders. but those who fail to put up good numbers in junior don’t often go on to have successful NHL careers.

20 THOUGHTS: COX GETS OFF (HOW COULD WE NOT?)
A second week now into the season and what have we learnt, what can we frank from our Round One observations and what did we go too early on
Well, the Bombers had a better second half but geez the week on the track did nothing between games, the Dogs are definitely finding a new gear in 2019 and yep, the rules have done very little.
But it’s still too early for final judgements, last year, the Suns started 2-0 and were third after two rounds, the Pies were 0-2 and third last.
That said, after Round Three last year Port were unbeaten and top, so don’t expect to be naming premiers next week either…
 1.       Let’s start with the girls. Over 53,000 in Adelaide to a yes, one-sided Grand Final, but the blokes have those too, um, 2007, or 2015, take your pick. But yes, great celebration, great spectacle, big fan of the AFLW going up and up – but the naysayers going with the “oh, only reason the crowd was so big was because of free entry”. Firstly, Adelaide played in Sydney on Friday night and has more paid-up members than that ground has seats, pretty sure even if it did come out of their hip pocket there would have been plenty of paying guests if need be, and secondly, what a shonky argument, it’s like saying road users only drive on the West Gate Freeway because its not a toll road. Please be serious..
2.       Don’t let yourself get sucked into pro-Steve Hocking nonsense, “oh the new rules have been epic!” No. Scoring is down from 90 to 80 on average per team to Round 2 compared to last year and scoring shots are down 9%. So we’re getting less offense and his rules do nothing to stop congestion other than after a goal’s kicked and the ball is back in the middle, which is happening less. Tell you something for free – those conversations of crisis we had two months into last season, they’ll come back soon enough. But here’s the thing – the game’s fine, leave it. Anyway.
3.       Dogs-Hawks was interesting, credit to the Dogs, had allllllll of the ball in the second term but didn’t put the Hawks away, kept them in it. Was 23-4 the Bullies’ way for inside 50s in that quarter but they only put on two goals to one.
4.       But yes, from a poos and wees perspective, they did go two down on the bench, have two horrendous frees in the last one of which gave Schache and absolute freebie and the Dogs snuck home. If you’re Hawthorn you’re stiff but if you’re Footscray this should have been in the bag prior to a crazy last term comeback.
5.       And we’ll say this again - Libba is a top 10 midfielder in the game who’ll never be seen as one. Not classy or flashy, but gee blokes like him find themselves in winning sides more often than not. A buy.
6.       Swans again, not enough soldiers through the guts, Kennedy 36 touches, Parker 26, yes Jake Lloyd got 34 but otherwise what, Harry Cunningham, Oli Florent, really? With no midfield that team will struggle to score all year. A lean year for a bounce back soon enough we think.
7.       Brissy beat a very rusty West Coast (proven with how they performed this week) and then a dodgy North, hold fire, they’re not the three-peat Lions reincarnated, but good signs.
8.       Yep – the Langford Guelfi thing is a bizarre as you’ll see. Now the Dons did play better in the second half, playing like that they’ll be much better, but there’s six quarters of utter filth in their 2019 already they can’t just ignore. Any non-competiveness this Friday night at all and its call in the tarp and shotgun on their season.
9.       Dees got ahead of themselves? Two really ugly weeks where they thought it might just happen? Need to do the work fellas. Christian Petracca should be either Jordan De Goey or Clayton Oliver by now.
10.   Tigs, Rance wasn’t the difference, goes to show how important a raging Martin and Cotchin are. Dion Prestia looks a million bucks when Dusty polls 3 votes, but if he is held like Pig Greenwood did to him last Thursday, do we know for absolute sure Prestia was even at the ground?
11.   Oh the Pies paid a heap for Dayne Beams… not really, had they not traded for him, and taken their own picks to the draft, due to the complex draft points system they would have gotten their Academy kid Quaynor and Father-Son Kelly anyway, so from a draft haul perspective the selections would have been the same either way, just the picks used were different. All in all its just one first rounder next year, now that’s value.
12.   Two rounds in, yes the Crows are loving that they have the Blues first rounder, so right now the Crows have pick 4., but they swapped picks, so the Blues have theirs and that’s pick 8. This is only a mess for Carlton if Adelaide ends up being any good, work to do still.
13.   I know it was Freo, and I know it was a Sunday timeslot, and I know they’ve had lean years, but barely 10,000 to the home opener for Gold Coast last weekend. Gee, I just can’t see this ever becoming a 20,000+ a game club. Then again, to be fair, weekend before, Giants got 15,000 to their home game against Essendon, so work to do on both fronts.
14.   James Hird to return to Essendon, now Robbo, whats upstairs in your ‘alone time financial institution’ doesn’t need to make to print, he has barely reappeared in public let alone the idea sacking a 0-2 premiership coach to bring back the formerly suspended unproven coach. Please.
15.   Eddie McGuire copping overs for his coin toss comment last weekend. Had nothing to do with her just an unfortunate mistake – but for balance, upon reflection, geez he got unders for his Goodes/King Kong comment a few years ago, go find that audio for a listen, it has not aged well at all Edward.
16.   How does Michael Christian have a report saying Dylan Grimes had concussion symptoms and on Tribunal night the Richmond doc says no medial report he did stated any such thing? That can only go well…
17.   Melbourne will run through a banner this week covered in mean tweets as an act of defiance and resilience to online bullying and the like. Hate to say it, whilst the topic and angle is right, it’s a problem I’m glad the Dees want to combat, but giving air to the content is just what fuels those looking for a reaction – if anything this gives the ‘trolls’ what they want, as opposed to sending a message back, “hey kids, keep it up, you might make a Demons banner!”
18.   Couple non-AFL for a moment, um Ange Postecoglou – soft. Talks in the press this week as to why he ‘had to resign’ from Soccerroos coach in an “I had no option, it was their actions, they leaved me with no choice”. It’s only a view but for mine Peter FitzSimmons really quite harmless comments on Channel Nine got under Ange’s skin and then what, he chose to walk because he might get sacked if he didn’t qualify for the World Cup, which is totally normal behavior from the FFA if so, but at the time he was still amidst qualification and we ended up qualifying. Righto Ange, sorry, you’ve lost me.
19.   And here’s one you won’t like – Ben Simmons is badly overrated. Yes, very talented, one of if not our best basketballers ever, but if you’re a guard in the NBA, I don’t care how magical your passing is and your ability to drive to the post and score in the paint almost at will, if you cannot score 3s you’re not elite. Don’t care if your teammates are amazing from downtown though, that just masks your massive deficiency. It’s like a test batsman who can’t play a cut shot or a tennis player who simply cannot volley, don’t care if you’re an amazing cover drive or down-the-line forehand, if there’s a key part of the game you just can’t do, not even ok at but totally inept – you’re just a pile of mashed potatoes to me, sorry.
20.   And let’s finish with the girls again because Erin Phillips won the AFLW MVP again, and is possibly our best footballer in the country. But if she isn’t, it would probably be Sam Kerr. Going well our girls at the moment, going very well.

Queensland's NRL clubs under threat of missing finals
Updated May 17, 2018 22:33:24
Tumblr media
Photo: The Broncos could be absent from September action due to their inconsistency. (AAP: Brendan Esposito, File) Map: Brisbane 4000 Could it happen, an NRL finals series without a Queensland-based team? It might seem unthinkable for Maroons fans, but administrators north of the Tweed have started whispering about the possibility in the corridors of Lang Park. And they have a case. The Broncos are ninth with a minus 46 points for-and-against tally, with five wins and five losses for the season. They had what could be considered lucky wins against the Cowboys, the Tigers and Bulldogs and have just lost against Manly in Brisbane for the first time in five years. They have a huge injury toll including Matt Gillett (neck), Josh McGuire (ankle), Jordan Kahu (broken jaw), Alex Glenn (knee medial ligament) and Payne Haas (dislocated shoulder) and cannot expect any of those back before the Origin period begins. The Broncos have not missed the finals since 2013 but to get there they need to break even during the second third of season without many of their stars and have tough clashes against the Roosters (round 11), Storm (round 14) and Sharks (round 15) in coming weeks. They finish the season with Rabbitohs at home (round 23), Roosters away (round 24) and Manly at home (round 25). Final ladder prediction: ninth Cowboys' season almost a write-off It is no better in Townsville where the North Queensland Cowboys look likely to miss the finals for the first time in seven years. The 2015 premiers recently re-signed coach Paul Green and had hoped it might reignite their season after five losses in a row between round two and round six. After making last year's grand final from eighth position without Matt Scott and Johnathan Thurston, many experts had the Cowboys pegged as champions this year.
Tumblr media
Photo: The Cowboys could miss the finals for the first time under premiership coach Paul Green. (AAP: Michael Chambers, File) But now they sit at three wins and seven losses. Justin O'Neill, Antonio Winterstein and Ethan Lowe are out of form, Michael Morgan (abductor-hernia), Lachlan Coote (hamstring problems) and Ben Hampton (ankle) are injured and age is starting to catch up with Johnathan Thurston and Matt Scott, two of the club's highest paid players. Add in the Scott Bolton sexual assault allegations and the 2018 season is a write-off for them. Speaking to a few Cowboys insiders they say the club needs roster renewal and an injection of youth and speed into the backline. To make the finals they would need to win at least nine of their remaining 14 matches. In coming weeks they have the Rabbitohs (round 11) Storm (round 12) and Sea Eagles (round 14) and end the season with the Sharks away (round 23) the Eels at home (round 24) and the Titans away (round 25). Their back-end draw is softer than the Broncos but with Origin about to hit and no sign of a form reversal in sight, it is good night to Green and his merry men. Final ladder prediction: 12th Titans hit the skids after promising start Finally to the Gold Coast Titans, whose early-season form has turned into middle-season ineptness. No-one predicted the Titans would make the finals at the start of the season and no-one is predicting that now. When the season started experts were already handing the Titans the wooden spoon with a rookie coach and a playing squad that looks like 'Penrith lite'.
Tumblr media
Photo: The wheels have fallen off the Titans' 2018 campaign. (AAP: Lukas Coch, File) Two of those former Panthers have been massive flops with Leilani Latu spending most of the season in the Queensland Cup and Bryce Cartwright driving his coach and Titan's supporters mad with his inability to tackle. Maroons prop Jarrod Wallace elected to stay on a four-year deal reportedly worth $2.5 million and fellow Broncos discard Jai Arrow has been outstanding but with a 3-7 start to the season, 15th spot on the ladder, and a for-and-against of minus 96 points, there will not be anyone backing Gold Coast into a finals spot. Add in injuries to Kevin Proctor (groin), Keegan Hipgrave (wrist), Morgan Boyle (shoulder), Nathan Peats (ribs) and Will Matthews (repeated concussions) and you can almost be assured of the Eels handing Gold Coast bottom spot on the ladder at some stage of the season. The Titans are on a five-match losing streak and have the Knights (round 11) Roosters (round 12) and Rabbitohs (round 14) over the next month before ending the season with Manly away (round 23) Storm at home (round 24) and Cowboys at home (round 25). Final ladder prediction: 16th It has been 27 years since a Queensland-based rugby league team was not in the play-offs and back then the Titans were known as the Seagulls, they played out of Tweed Heads and Wally Lewis was their captain-coach. But the way all three Queensland clubs are going in 2018, there might need to be another break away competition for the Broncos, Cowboys or Titans to see any finals action, let along the impact it might have on the mighty Maroons as they try to secure their 12th series win in 13 years. Saints at Ravens: What went right, what went wrong
Tumblr media
BALTIMORE -- The New Orleans Saints (5-1) overcame a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat the Baltimore Ravens, 24-23, on Sunday at M&T Bank Stadium.
The Saints are now on a five-game winning streak, but this might be the most impressive victory of the season as they scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter against the NFL's No. 1 ranked defense. Heading into Sunday's game, Baltimore had not allowed a touchdown in the second half this season, but the Saints offense proved how lethal it can be.
The Saints almost let the game slip away at the end, but they were lucky Ravens kicker Justin Tucker missed an extra point after John Brown caught a 14-yard touchdown with just 24 seconds remaining.
Here are some highlights from the game:
What went right: Drew Brees had an incredible game. It was great game for Brees statistically as he was 21 of 28 for 208 yards with two touchdowns with a 119.3 passer rating.
More impressive, though, was the way Brees made some of his plays as he evaded what looked like sure sacks multiple times.
The Saints defense also played much better in the second half, until the last drive.
What went wrong: The Saints' first possession was one of the history books, but not in a good way. It was an impressive drive up until the end, featuring a fake punt and two other fourth-down conversions. Then, on their fourth attempt at a fourth down, a fourth-and-1 at the Baltimore 4, the Saints didn't convert as Taysom Hill's attempted pitch to Alvin Kamara resulted in a fumble that Baltimore recovered. The end result was a 20-play, 69-yard drive with no points. This was just the second time in the Drew Brees and Sean Payton era the Saints had a drive of 20-plus plays.
One consistent problem in the first half for the Saints was the coverage by cornerback Ken Crawley, who had issues against Ravens receiver John Brown throughout the game. Brown had five catches for 103 yards at halftime. Crawley and the Saints did a better job locking down the back end in the second half.
Thomas had two uncharacteristic drops, and the run game mostly struggled as New Orleans averaged just 3.4 yards per carry.
Player of the game: Drew Brees
Injuries: Josh LeRibeus started at left guard with Andrus Peat (concussion) out, but LeRibeus exited in the second quarter with an ankle injury and did not return. Cameron Tom replaced LeRibeus for the rest of the game. Ravens left guard Bradley Bozeman missed a portion of the game with a calf injury.
In case you missed it: Brees joined the 500-touchdown club with his touchdown pass to tight end Benjamin Watson in the second quarter. He becomes the fourth quarterback to ever accomplish the feat, along with Peyton Manning, Brett Favre and Tom Brady.

Brees, defensive stand, help Saints survive Panthers, 31-26
NEW ORLEANS/January 7, 2018 (AP)(STL.News) — Drew Brees passed for 376 yards and two touchdowns, and the New Orleans Saints held off Carolina’s late comeback bid to seal a 31-26 victory in their NFC wild-card game on Sunday.
The Panthers had a first down on the Saints 26-yard line with 58 seconds left, but heavy pressure by All-Pro defensive end Cameron Jordan a couple plays later induced an intentional grounding penalty on Carolina quarterback Cam Newton, making it third-and-25 on the Saints 34 and a required 10-second runoff left 22 seconds on the clock.
After an incompletion in the end zone on third down, Vonn Bell sacked Newton on a safety blitz, ensuring the Saints (12-5) swept all three meetings with Carolina (11-6) this season, in addition to winning their first playoff game in four seasons.
“We wanted it more,” Jordan said. “I mean they’ve been to their Super Bowl, let ’em go to another one next year. We want our run.”
Brees’ touchdowns went for 80-yards to Ted Ginn and 9 yards to tight end Josh Hill. Fullback Zach line and running back Alvin Kamara each ran for short touchdowns, the latter set up by Michael Thomas 46-yard reception.
Thomas caught eight passes for 131 yards on a day when the Saints needed the passing game to compensate for a ground game that struggled to get going.
Helped by the presence of tight end Greg Olsen — who did not play in the teams’ previous two meetings — Newton marched Carolina into Saints territory more often than not. But the Panthers stalled four times from inside the New Orleans 25, settling for four field goal attempts on those drives, one of which kicker Graham Gano surprisingly missed.
Olsen had eight catches for 107 yards and a touchdown. Newton finished 24 of 40 passing for 349 yards and two touchdowns, the other a 56-yard scoring strike to Christian McCaffrey that pulled the Panthers within a touchdown with 4:09 left.
But Newton was also sacked four times, once each by Bell, Jordan, Jonathan Freeney, and David Onyemata. The sack by Onyemata came as Newton tried to spin away from Tyeler Davison and slammed his head into Onyemata chest. Newton was checked for a concussion, but missed only one play before returning to the game.
“We had to finish out the game and put it on our defense, put it on me, put it on our secondary, our D-line,” Jordan said. “I mean, everybody responded the way we were supposed to.”
Still, the Panthers were in striking distance for the win after a failed gamble by Saints coach Sean Payton, who elected to keep the offense on the field on fourth-and-short with two minutes remaining. He hoped to run out the clock on Carolina, which was out of timeouts. It backfired when Brees’ pass as he scrambled to his right was intercepted by Adams, giving Carolina the ball at its 31 with 1:51 to go.
“This win is special,” Jordan said. “They came back late in the fourth quarter, made this a game.”
INJURIES
Panthers: Newton missed one play — a failed third-and-long — while being evaluated for a concussion after Onyemata’s sack. Cornerback Daryl Worley briefly was placed in the concussion protocol but also cleared to return during the game.
Saints: Starting left guard Andrus Peat was carted off the field with a left shin injury. His replacement, Senio Kelemete, later needed help off the field for an undisclosed injury.
UP NEXT
Panthers: Begin their offseason.
Saints: Move on to play at Minnesota in the NFC Divisional playoffs.
