DRY CHILLI PAN MEE 🍜 // aud16 from Oriental Delights, Cockburn. It’s quite delicious - love the springy noodles. Unfortunately my egg wasn’t runny. This dish is only available for dine-in and cooked to order. On the look out for Pan Mee places since the Pan Mee place at Waterford Plaza has closed down. What are your favourite places for Pan Mian / Pan Mee? Wiki Trivia: “The name banmian (board/block noodle) came from the Hakka method of cutting the noodle into straight strands using a wooden block as ruler. In Hak, some might call it Man-Foon-Char-Guo (麵粉茶粿) or Dao-Ma-Chet (刀嬤切). In Hokkien, it was called Mee-Hoon-Kueh (麵粉粿; lit. "wheat snack") but what can be found at hawker stalls is generally called banmian. The current style is a mix between the traditional methods of Hakka and Hokkien. The Hakka initially made the noodle by shaving pieces off a block of dough, commonly made from flour (sometimes egg is added for more flavor), while the Hokkien would roll the dough into a large, flat piece that would then be torn by hand into bite-sized bits. Traditionally, the dough is hand-kneaded and torn into smaller pieces of dough (about 2 inches). The dough can also be kneaded using the machine into a variety of shapes, the most common shape being flat strips of noodle. Banmian is a culinary dish that is popular in China, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan. It consists of egg noodles served in a flavorful soup, often with some type of meat or fish, vegetables and various spices. Dried anchovies, minced pork, mushrooms, and a leafy vegetable such as sweet potato leaves or sayur manis (sauropus androgynus) are also possible ingredients. Dry chilli pan mee is a variant which was invented in Chow Kit, Kuala Lumpur, and is very popular in the Klang Valley. This dry noodle is served with minced pork, fried onions, anchovies, and topped with a poached egg which is later to be stirred into the noodles. It is usually served with dry chilli or sambal.” #PanMian #OrientalDelights #Perth #Cockburn #PerthPanMian #PerthFoodReview #PFR_OrientalDelights #PFR_Malaysian #PerthMalaysian (at Oriental Delights) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cpm-khvPYAQ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

MALAYSIAN 🇲🇾 // Delicious dishes from a relatively new restaurant Ain’s Kitchen @ainskitchenperth at Malaga Markets @malagamarkets 😋 Ordered the following over two visits: - Nasi Kerabu with fried chicken $14.90 - Nasi Dagang with curry fish (mackerel) $14.90 - Mee Goreng with beef $14.90 - Chicken satay $13.90 Such a delicious feed. Especially love the Nasi Kerabu and Nasi Dagang with mackerel curry. The sambal and pickles are so good. The Nasi Kerabu was served with salted duck egg which was a nice combination. Mee Goreng had good wokhei and the beef has been braised and then cooked - it’s the wetter style of Mee Goreng cooked by Malaysian Malays. Chicken satay was marinated with fragrant lemongrass. Will be back to try more dishes on the menu. Happy to have discovered this gem. #AinsKitchen #MalagaMarkets #Malaysian #Perth #PerthMalaysian #MalaysianFood #NasiKerabu #NasiDagang #MeeGoreng #PerthFoodReview #PFR_Malaysian #PFR_AinsKitchen (at Malaga Markets) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpFFfCAP-UG/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

SPECIAL JUST THIS WEEK 🦀 // Mudcrab at $58/kg (the size of the mud crabs are around 1.2kg-1.5kg) cooked to your liking with a choice of: Singapore style, salted egg, golden fragrant, black pepper, salt & pepper, ginger shallot from Banana Leaf Catering Malaysian & Chinese Cuisine, Malaga. We ordered a 1.2kg crab ($69.60) cooked salted-egg style - fragrant with curry leaves and cardamom. Also ordered their homemade bean curd claypot ($27.50). Served with steam rice and fried mantou buns. We had a chat with the friendly Burmese chef and found out that he had worked in KL prior to moving to Perth. He’s able to do this promotion because he collects these Queensland crabs from the airport himself (the promotion in previous years were $50/kg but it has increased this year due to flight changes - the crabs are sometimes diverted to Adelaide first before reaching Perth). The $58/kg offer is only valid this week so make a booking if you don’t want to miss out. Or find someone who makes bookings and tag along like @thisisangelang even when you’ve had some appetising starters for dinner. 😜 #BananaLeaf #Malaga #Malaysian #MudCrab #SaltedEgg #SaltedEggMudCrab #Tofu #beancurd #claypot #mantou #buns #perthcrab #perthmudcrab #Perth #MalaysianFood #PerthMalaysian #PerthFood #PerthDeals #PerthFoodReview #PFR_BananaLeaf (at Banana Leaf Catering Malaysia & Chinese Cuisines) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cd5-xqkPE1O/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

TEAWOKS 🇲🇾 // @teawoks is one of my go-to Malaysian places in Perth for good Sarawakian fare. ❤️ menu on @perthfoodmenu or click #PFR_TeaWoks We had: - Kampua Mee $10.50 - Foo Chow Fried Noodle Soup $13.90 - Pork Bun “Siew Bao” $2.90 - Foochow Kompia $7.50 (3 pieces) Both noodles were delicious. The roast pork pieces had crispy skin and I loved how they didn’t use any colouring for their char siew. The Foo Chow fried noodle soup had good wokhei and was flavoursome. Siew Bao was packed with meat and quite good. Foochow Kompia buns isn’t deep-fried anymore so it’s less oily. Fresh pickled chilli and yes, I did kill all of that pickled chilli. 😆 #TeaWoks #Perth #EastPerth #Malaysian #PerthMalaysian #PerthNoodles #Kampua #Noodles #SiewBao #NoodleWorship #FooChow #Kompia #福州美食 #福州 #面 #PerthFoodReview (at TeaWoks) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVm9MKfPl7o/?utm_medium=tumblr

WEEKEND SPECIAL: BANANA LEAF RICE 🍌🌱🍚 // Visited Syiok Kopitiam, Wanneroo markets last weekend for their weekend special. They’re bringing it back again this weekend so you don’t miss out! So good to see this in Perth. Menu on @perthfoodmenu or click #PFR_SyiokKopitiam Had the banana leaf rice served with Pappadum and pickles (aud7.50) with curry fish (aud6). The curry sauces smelt fragrant and had a bit of spicy kick - mouth-wateringly good. The mackerel fish serving was generous. They’ve undercooked the potatoes but otherwise, it was perfect. Willing to drive 30 minutes for this. P.S I’ve noticed they’ve since increased the price to aud9.50 for the banana leaf rice this weekend. If you haven’t been to Wanneroo Markets, definitely give this quaint market a visit too - there are just so many hidden gems within this market! I’ll be back to try the Vietnamese stall. #syiokkopitiam #wangara #wanneroomarkets #bananaleafrice #malaysian #indian #perthmalaysian #perthfoodreview (at Syiok Kopitiam) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFmIbEVDFsw/?igshid=mdik1czwiley

Kuih order ($32) from @thelayersaustralia ❤️ one of my favs - Kuih Dadar - knew I had to order when I saw it on the Kuih box menu earlier this year. Featuring: - 4 x Kuih Dadar (Pandan crepe wrapped with palm sugar desiccated coconut filling) - 4 x Kuih Lapis - 4 x Kuih Kosui Gula Merah - 4 x Kuih Bengka Ubi (baked cassava) Always such a treat to get these. Favs were the Kuih Dadar (green ones) and Kuih Bengka Ubi (golden yellow ones). Grew up having these as a breakfast treat while on holidays in Malaysia. The kuih vendors would be at the local pasar (Malay for market) with a huge variety and if you visit the markets too late, some of the popular kuihs would have sold out. Great to have it here where you can order and pick up. #TheLayersAustralia #KuihDadar #Kuih #PerthKuih #PerthMalaysian #MalaysianFood ##KuihBox #Nyonya #Malaysian #Indonesian #NyonyaKuih #KuihBengka #娘惹糕 #娘惹粿 #娘惹 #糕点 #粿 #Desserts #Peranakan #PerthDesserts #PerthFoodReview #PFR_TheLayers #PFR_Malaysian #PFR_TheLayers (at Perth, Western Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CcWiiAmvOt5/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Tomato Sauce Kway Teow (aud12.80) & Kolo Mee (aud11.80) from Asian Golden Wok, Innaloo. Menu on last two pics. Delicious and one of my most frequented Malaysian restaurants in Perth. Good wokhei with the tomato Kuay Teow (first time trying this dish; it’s a Sarawakian dish). My favourite here is always the Kolo Mee. 😋❤️ P.S They only do takeaway orders these days. #AsianGoldenWok #Innaloo #KoloMee #TomatoKwayTeow #PerthMalaysian #Sarawakian #MalaysianFood #PFR_Malaysian #PerthFoodReview #PFR_AsianGoldenWok (at Asian Golden Wok) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cb9_hNVvU1b/?utm_medium=tumblr

HANDMADE NOODLES ARE MADE FOR LIFTING 😋 // Signature Hakka Mee (Dry) with minced pork, pork filled wanton served with fresh spinach noodles (aud8.50); BBQ pork with wanton noodles (soup) (aud10.90); Mild spicy minced pork noodles (dry) aud8.50 and Dumpling/Shui Jiao Soup (5 pieces; aud7.50), from Eat Well Gourmet Foods, Langford. Menu on @perthfoodmenu or click #PFR_EatWellGourmetFoods Very happy to re-visit and the handmade spinach and egg noodles are as springy and tasty as I remembered them to be. First time trying the soup based noodles and the soup was pretty good too. Dish of the day was the mild spicy minced pork noodles and their soft BBQ pork. Love that the BBQ pork is not coloured red here. They’ve also improved the seasoning as I found the seasoning of the BBQ pork noodles too sweet for my liking on the previous visit and it is just nice now. This cosy restaurant is such a hole-in-the-wall gem with reasonable pricing. 😃 #EatWellGourmetFoods #Langford #Malaysian #PerthMalaysian #Noodles #HandMadeNoodles #PerthNoodles #HakkaNoodles #BBQPork #Wanton #SuiJiao #PerthFoodReview #PFR_EatWellGourmetFoods (at Eat Well Gourmet Foods) https://www.instagram.com/p/CatKeEQvL6d/?utm_medium=tumblr

COMFORT FOOD 🐔🍚❤️ // Hainanese Chicken Rice (1/2 chicken $17); Mee Goreng Combo ($16); Spinach with Garlic $15, Bowl of Chicken rice ($4.70) from Tak Chee, Northbridge. My favourite for Hainanese Chicken Rice, the other being Mamak House in Morley. First time trying the Mee Goreng here and it’s quite good - Mamak style - wokhei would have made it even better. There was a period of time where the Hainanese chicken chilli sauce was sweetened too much - glad it isn’t the case now and they’re good again. Do you guys like how I compare my visits from previous times and let you know if they’ve improved or deteriorated in my personal opinion? Always only honest reviews. 👌🏻 #TakCheeHouse #Northbridge #HainaneseChickenRice #Malaysian #PerthMalaysian #MeeGoreng #PerthMeeGoreng #Spinach #PerthFoodReview #PFR_TakChee (at Tak Chee Restaurant) https://www.instagram.com/p/CaMtI4APcjL/?utm_medium=tumblr

Our dinner from Ipoh Old Town Malaysian Hawker, Victoria Park. Menu on @perthfoodmenu or click #PFR_IpohOldTown We had the following: - Pork Belly & Salted Fish Claypot Rice $19.80 - Eggplant with salted fish and pork mince $19.80 - Stir-fried frog with ginger and spring onion $42 - Double Boiled Herbal Soup - spare ribs and pork maw $7.80 - Hot Teh Tarik $5.50 - Chinese Tea $1.50 pp Generous portions and we enjoyed the pork belly claypot rice, eggplant & pork maw soup. Claypot rice had crispy rice bits underneath and it was the best claypot rice I’ve had in Perth so far - thanks @mildsatay & @iambkong for the recommendation! Stir-fried frog was very heavily-seasoned and the portion was quite small - first time seeing frog in Chinese restaurants in Perth though! Teh Tarik was delicious - very strong tea flavour and it wasn’t too sweet. They’re very busy during dinner time and could use more staff to be more efficient with seating customers & taking orders etc. Will be back to try their other dishes. #IpohOldTownPerth #Malaysian #VictoriaPark #Perth #PerthMalaysian #ClaypotRice #PorkBelly #Eggplant #Frog #PigMaw #Soup #田鸡 #PerthFoodReview (at Victoria Park, Western Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CWSsZt4vtYh/?utm_medium=tumblr

LAKSA // Sarawak Laksa & Curry Laksa; aud22 each from the newly-opened Laksarama at Karrinyup Shopping Centre’s new The West Deck. @laksarama @karrinyup_sc Best Sarawak Laksa broth we’ve had in Perth so far - the flavours were spot-on and that broth was thick and rich. Definitely recommend the Sarawak Laksa here over the Curry Laksa. We did a Sarawak Laksa crawl after having this and preferred this over Teawoks and KCH’s. Curry laksa broth wasn’t strong and lacking in coconut milk. Noodle portion sizes and amount of broth for both types of laksa could be more. Lovely fitout of the restaurant space and appreciate the complimentary fragrant teas like the ones served at Vietnamese restaurants. Understandably it’s just their first few weeks since opening, so there might be some tweaks and improvements coming. Would love to see them do well. Thank you @karrinyup_sc and @detailmc for the gift card and inviting us to go check out the new West Deck where there’s heaps of other new eateries to check out! #Invited #Gifted #Laksarama #Karrinyup #KarrinyupShoppingCentre #TheWestDeck #Malaysian #SarawakLaksa #Laksa #PerthMalaysian #PerthLaksa #PerthSarawakLaksa #PerthFoodReview #PFR_Laksarama (at Laksarama) https://www.instagram.com/p/CWF6N1jPo_0/?utm_medium=tumblr

SEE-HUM (sea clams) CKT // Monday means..that @uncleeddieperth is back open. Only Mondays to Wednesdays to help you chase the Monday blues away. Pictured are their special Char Kuay Teow with sea clams (aud18.90); Mee Goreng (aud13.90) and Herbal tea of the day: Luo Han Guo (aud4.50). Normal CKT is priced at aud13.90. Thanks Eddie for letting us try the sea clams! 🥰 It’s rare to find CKT with sea clams in Perth and this might be a first. Personally found the clams on this visit a bit too raw for my liking (they were good on another visit when my partner visited) and I prefer the normal CKT without sea clams. Their Mee Goreng is a winner always. You guys should know how much I love this place by the amount of times I’ve visited since they’ve opened. 😋🤤 #UncleEddie #UncleEddiePerth #VictoriaPark #Malaysian #PerthMalaysian #CharKueyTeow #SeeHum #SeaClam #MeeGoreng #LuoHanGuo #PerthFoodReview #PFR_UncleEddie (at Uncle Eddie Perth) https://www.instagram.com/p/CU4w7F3BJy6/?utm_medium=tumblr

Nyonya Dinner from Little Nyonya Kitchen, Canning Vale 🇲🇾❤️ Ordered the following: - Baba Wee’s Ayam Bakar $13: char-grilled marinated whole chicken Maryland with special homemade sauce - Nyonya Beef Rendang $26 - Chicken Satay 6 pieces $11 - Terung Tempera: fried baby eggplant with onion, spring onion & chilli in black sauce $14 - Acar Vegetables $5 - Jasmine rice $2.50 pp Favourites were the tender beef rendang and Ayam Bakar. Both were really good. Chicken satay was succulent and fragrant. First time seeing cauliflower in achar which was interesting. Found the eggplants really bitter (must be my supertaster tastebuds: Google this - there’s such a thing) but my dining partner couldn’t taste any bitterness and loved it. #LittleNyonyaKitchenPerth #CanningVale #LittleNyonya #Nyonya #Malaysian #PerthMalaysian #PerthNyonya #NyonyaFood #Rendang #Satay #AyamBakar #Achar #SuperTaster #PerthFoodReview #PFR_LittleNyonyaKitchen (at Little Nyonya Kitchen Perth) https://www.instagram.com/p/CUMwp1uBQKo/?utm_medium=tumblr

UNCLE EDDIE // a late-night pop-up at Anything La Corner, Victoria Park that opens only on Mondays-Wednesdays to fuel your supper cravings. With only three items on their menu and one or two specials on Tuesday nights, Uncle Eddie proves that you don’t need an extensive menu to keep regulars coming back for more. As a third generation Malaysian emigrated to Perth, you’d bank on Uncle Eddie having a few tricks up his sleeves with recipes passed down from generations (Eddie’s grandfather was a hawker back in Malaysia). Despite the name “uncle”, Eddie is actually a 35 year old young lad. 😆 Tried the Mee Goreng and Char Kuay Teow (aud13.90) and they had really good wokhei. The prawns used were fresh and I loved how close the CKT here feels to Penang’s - despite this being halal with no pork lard and lapcheong as they respect Anything La Corner’s halal certification. I would imagine this to be even better when it’s with pork lard as this is one of the best CKT I’ve had in Perth so far. Mee Goreng was legit too and a favourite amongst our group. I’ve also tried the Penang White Curry Noodle Soup (aud14.90) a day ago and found it to be not as great as the two fried dishes - it needed more broth for the noodles to not clump together and the prawns used here tasted frozen instead of the really fresh ones. #UncleEddie #AnythingLaCorner #VictoriaPark #Malaysian #Perth #PerthMalaysian #PerthFoodReview #CharKuayTeow #MeeGoreng #PenangWhiteCurryNoodle #PFR_UncleEddie (at Uncle Eddie Perth) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTULsGRhBCZ/?utm_medium=tumblr
