VIETNAMESE 🇻🇳 // Cơm Rang Bò Lúc Lắc : Shaking Beef with Fried Rice; aud21 from Viet Hong, Malaga. Menu on @perthfoodmenu or click #PFR_VietHong My favourite in Perth for shaking beef. I’ll crave this every once in a while and drive all the way to Malaga for this plate of deliciousness. Beef pieces were juicy and tender. Requested for the fried rice to be less oily and they delivered too. It was still so fragrant without being excessively oily. Friendly service here with complimentary fragrant Vietnamese tea. #VietHong #Vietnamese #Malaga #PerthVietnamese #cơmrangbòlúclắc #FriedRice #Beef #ShakingBeef #VietnameseFood #PerthFoodReview (at Viet Hong restaurant) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqVIIlovRmq/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

BIG DON’S @bigdonsmeat : Yesterday’s Saturday pick up: - Smoked Wagyu Reuben $25 (300g meat) with house made chili kraut. @bigloaf_factorybakery Rye bread. Russian dressing and Provolone cheese - 500g Snag Pack $25 English Cumberland and Irish Brekky Snag - Ancho Sausage Scotch Egg Half $10 Melt-in-the-mouth wagyu Reuben. So so good. Best in Perth imo. Am full just having half of the Reuben. The scotch egg is humongous too - awesome work @lildomatbigdons . Cannot kill this in one go for sure. 😂 Always lovely to visit when I manage to get the tixs (they sell out in one minute) and Don is always around to chat with customers when he’s at the event. Thanks for the extra snags and jar of pickles too! Looking forward to when the brewery and tacos store open - hopefully in less than 12 months’ time. #BigDonsSmokedMeats #Bayswater #BigDons #wagyu #Reuben #PerthReuben #PerthFoodReview #PFR_BigDonsSmokedMeats (at Big Don's Smoked Meats) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqPi9xhv5Fl/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Last night’s epic dinner at the new restaurant at @republic_of_fremantle - the highlight was the incredibly good @futariwagyu 300g rump cap ($75) - perfect medium rare. Paired with delicious cocktails and yummy sides: beef fat potatoes ($12) and Brussel Sprouts & almond ($14). Also ordered another mains: Lamb. Grilled Cucumber. Sheep's Yoghurt. Green Sauce ($40) and entree: Grilled Calamari. Witlof. Fennel. Sesame ($22). The calamari was fresh, tender and springy. I’m personally not a lamb fan so only tried a bit of this - lamb was juicy. The grilled cucumber and sauce went so well with the lamb. Dessert of steamed pudding, golden syrup, toasted rice sorbet ($16) was really good - had this on my previous visit and re-ordered as the toasted rice sorbet is just next level. Thank you Max @gweedus and the team for your outstanding service as always. Thank you for letting us try the sticky date pudding cocktail complimentarily - such a unique cocktail served warm with cold creamy foam. ❤️🫶 (at Republic of Fremantle Distillery) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp9zJ13vQ35/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

HOME COOKING // Last Saturday’s meal prep: Grilled sambal skate with red onions, okra and curry leaves; Curry Red Emperor cutlet with eggplant, tomatoes, tofu puffs. Sambal sauce was from @suku_freo - so spicy and good. Skate was purchased from @atlanticseafoodperth in Northbridge. Wanted to get banana leaves for a more authentic look but my local grocer only sell it frozen by the pack - there were at least 20 leaves per pack - would have been surplus to needs so my sensibility won over “nice presentation”. It doesn’t look too bad now, does it? Other than the sambal on the pan being burnt slightly..🙈 #HomeCooking #SambalSkate #SambalStingray #Sambal #SukuFreo #SukuSambal #PerthFoodReview #CurryFish #AtlanticSeafood #RedEmperor #PFRCooks #PerthHomeCook (at Perth, Western Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp9tsluvdCf/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Sculptures by The Sea’s @sculpturebythesea last day this year will be Monday 20 March 2023 - make sure to check it out before it wraps up for the year. I visit this public art event annually and love it - so glad it’s still continuing after receiving funds from sponsors and foundations. There are some installations with lights so if you want to see everything, the best time to visit would be before sunset; stay for the beautiful sunset and until dark. The laser installation (on last pic) is one of the coolest I’ve seen. 😉 #SculpturesByTheSea #Cottesloe #PerthToDo #Perth #JustAnotherDayInWA #PerthIsOK #PerthFoodReview #PhotosBySW #PFR_SculpturesByTheSea #PFR_Art (at Sculptures By The Sea) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp9Iw7av7bj/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

DRY CHILLI PAN MEE 🍜 // aud16 from Oriental Delights, Cockburn. It’s quite delicious - love the springy noodles. Unfortunately my egg wasn’t runny. This dish is only available for dine-in and cooked to order. On the look out for Pan Mee places since the Pan Mee place at Waterford Plaza has closed down. What are your favourite places for Pan Mian / Pan Mee? Wiki Trivia: “The name banmian (board/block noodle) came from the Hakka method of cutting the noodle into straight strands using a wooden block as ruler. In Hak, some might call it Man-Foon-Char-Guo (麵粉茶粿) or Dao-Ma-Chet (刀嬤切). In Hokkien, it was called Mee-Hoon-Kueh (麵粉粿; lit. "wheat snack") but what can be found at hawker stalls is generally called banmian. The current style is a mix between the traditional methods of Hakka and Hokkien. The Hakka initially made the noodle by shaving pieces off a block of dough, commonly made from flour (sometimes egg is added for more flavor), while the Hokkien would roll the dough into a large, flat piece that would then be torn by hand into bite-sized bits. Traditionally, the dough is hand-kneaded and torn into smaller pieces of dough (about 2 inches). The dough can also be kneaded using the machine into a variety of shapes, the most common shape being flat strips of noodle. Banmian is a culinary dish that is popular in China, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan. It consists of egg noodles served in a flavorful soup, often with some type of meat or fish, vegetables and various spices. Dried anchovies, minced pork, mushrooms, and a leafy vegetable such as sweet potato leaves or sayur manis (sauropus androgynus) are also possible ingredients. Dry chilli pan mee is a variant which was invented in Chow Kit, Kuala Lumpur, and is very popular in the Klang Valley. This dry noodle is served with minced pork, fried onions, anchovies, and topped with a poached egg which is later to be stirred into the noodles. It is usually served with dry chilli or sambal.” #PanMian #OrientalDelights #Perth #Cockburn #PerthPanMian #PerthFoodReview #PFR_OrientalDelights #PFR_Malaysian #PerthMalaysian (at Oriental Delights) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cpm-khvPYAQ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

HOME COOKING // Simple meals with @evergreenfoods.au egg noodles with dumplings two ways: boiled & pan-fried, minced pork balls & @luvaduck ‘s cooked confit duck leg (air-fried this at 180 degrees for 15 minutes then 200 degrees for 5 minutes). So glad to get fresh egg noodles and wanton wrappers from @evergreenfoods.au - available from @woolworths_au - not an ad but yay for the Asian fridge section. We have come a long way to have Asian ingredients stocked at the major supermarkets. There were simply not that many choices / food diversity at the major supermarkets compared to back when I first arrived here 16 years ago and you would definitely have to get these items from Asian grocers - which even then would be hard to find fresh egg noodles. Dumpling filling: - minced pork - chopped coriander & spring onions - salt & white pepper, sesame oil, oyster sauce, dash of Shaoxing wine, light soy sauce Dry egg noodles dressing: - sesame oil - white pepper - cooking caramel - dark and light soy sauce #HomeCooking #Perth #EverGreenFoods #Wanton #Noodles #EggNoodles #LuvADuck #DuckConfit #Dumpling #PerthHomeCook #PerthFoodReview #PFR_Cooks (at Perth, Western Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpZDuojPkP6/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

PASTA 🇮🇹 // Tagliatelle Osso Bucco; aud31 from newly-opened Vin Populi @vinpopuli in Fremantle @visitfremantle . Delicious handmade pasta and flavoursome sauce. 🍝👌🏻 Also ordered the veal saltimboca ($35) - this was quite dry and overdone as the meat was a very thin slice - they kindly took this off our bill after we provided our feedback and asked if it was meant to be like that since we haven’t had the dish before. The sauce was nice though - love the slight tang. Will definitely be back to try more of their pastas. Loving the chill vibes here and the beautiful aesthetics - beautiful interior designs are such positive externalities. #VinPopuli #Fremantle #Pasta #Italian #PerthItalian #OssoBucco #Tagliatte #VealSaltimbocca #PerthFood #PerthFoodReview #PFR_Italian #PFR_VinPopuli (at Fremantle) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpXUM6XPbaK/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

INVITED // Hot weather is here to stay with 35 degrees forecasted today and this week. What better way to cool down than with an ice cream? Kuld Creamery @kuld_creamery has a new store on William Street in Northbridge. Pictured here is the Ice cream sandwich: coconut lemon myrtle and lemon butter flavours with raspberry & white choc cookie. One of my fav ice cream places in Perth that started on a laneway in Highgate. I remember visiting even on rainy days for a scoop of their “London Fog” (Earl Grey) flavour. Loving how far they’ve come - having shops in Freo and Rottnest Island. Love the refreshing coconut lemon myrtle flavour! Didn’t get it here but you must try their house-made waffle cone that’s so fragrant. Congratulations Mati and Kaithlyn on your new store and thanks to @detailmc for organising. 🫶❤️ #Invited #KuldCreamery #Northbridge #IceCream #Desserts #PerthFoodReview #PFR_KuldCreamery #PFR_IceCream #PFR_Desserts (at William Street, Northbridge) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpG2WjTPvjf/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

MALAYSIAN 🇲🇾 // Delicious dishes from a relatively new restaurant Ain’s Kitchen @ainskitchenperth at Malaga Markets @malagamarkets 😋 Ordered the following over two visits: - Nasi Kerabu with fried chicken $14.90 - Nasi Dagang with curry fish (mackerel) $14.90 - Mee Goreng with beef $14.90 - Chicken satay $13.90 Such a delicious feed. Especially love the Nasi Kerabu and Nasi Dagang with mackerel curry. The sambal and pickles are so good. The Nasi Kerabu was served with salted duck egg which was a nice combination. Mee Goreng had good wokhei and the beef has been braised and then cooked - it’s the wetter style of Mee Goreng cooked by Malaysian Malays. Chicken satay was marinated with fragrant lemongrass. Will be back to try more dishes on the menu. INVITED // Our feast at @davidsmasterpotwa in Victoria Park. Menu on last two pics. Picked the “pork bone soup” and “golden pickled soup” options as I can’t do “mala” which is numbing spiciness. Also tried their vegan tomato soup base which was really nice. Soup bases were rich with depth and flavoursome. Love how there’s a lot of fresh meat options for the MaLaTang - especially love the coriander beef, braised pork trotters, and eel ball for the ingredients. Love the addition of crunchy chickpeas on top of the MaLaTang - this added crunch was delicious. For sides we had the yummy pork trotter soup, crispy prawn spring rolls (love the jicama filling that reminds me of the Nyonya ‘Jiu Hu Char’ dish) and jiggly steam egg. Also tried their special spicy duck blood with intestine - I washed off the mala bits and loved the intestine (soft and fresh). For desserts we had the fried pumpkin pie with red bean filling and glutinous donuts with brown sugar. This malatang franchise which is related to Wu Ming Hotpot will be opening this weekend with lots of promotions - 50% off the bill and free hotpot for the year for the first 25 customers in line - check out their Instagram page for more deets. Ordered the following: - Uni Wagyu Aburi Ngiri $30 - Ishiyaki Stone Rice $25 - Wagyu Harami Skirt $34 - Pork Jowl $19 - Gyu Tan Finger cut $26 - Wagyu rib finger $34 - M9 Karubi Plate $34 - Tebasaki Wings $16 - Shishamo Fish $16 - Japanese imported rice $5 - Karuizawa beer (350ml) x 2 $15 each - Suntory Premium Malts (350ml) $12 Favourites were the bbq meats, uni wagyu aburi ngiri, stone rice and tebasaki wings. Shishamo fish is a deep-fried snack with fish roe that goes well with beer but too fishy for my liking as I’m not used to it.
