PGSM Reinako things I want to yell about, in no particular order (8/∞)

Act 17 & Act 18 Callbacks & Parallels

Rei and Minako's chance meetings in Acts 17 & 18 were simply iconic in so many ways for setting up Rei and Minako’s story and relationship.

With the number of parallels and callbacks that fit into the show referring back to Acts 17 and 18, to me this is evidence that Rei and Minako's story was well planned from the very start!

PGSM - Is the best because it did what the manga didn't have time to do and the 90's anime Failed to do. It took what the Manga laid a foundation on and build up on it which makes it the best of the three foundations. They did wonders taking things from the manga ( Rei dealing with her dad, Mako dealing with her parents being dead) and build up to it. My fave two episodes is the two-parter dealing with Rei and Ami and how they bonded dealing with their parents expectations. Also the episode with Rei and Mako when it was dealing with Rei's dad. Also dealing with Ami how Usagi was pretty much her first true friend and dealing with her interaction with Naru. The plot didn't stop when it was focusing on the girls. It also extends Mamoru and the Shittenou as well.

Manga- It laid the foundation for all of it but due to fact that Naoko was rushed because of datelines and the pacing is fast, it is more plot driven than character driven which is ok. But that doesn't mean they don't get any character development because they still do which it is more consistent.

Believe it or not, they do get more character development in the Manga in the 60 acts and the short stories but because we don't see them doing shenanigans every five seconds because they got a world to save, people don't think it. They do get chapters in arcs that are pertaining to them and their character. Mina has a whole freaking manga by herself. They have side stories going more in depth with their backstories with their families. But you still have to remember that Sailor Moon is Usagi Tsukino story and journey which of course she's going to get the most character development along with with two characters that are considered her family( Mamoru and Chibiusa) Also the cast gets big so everyone got to a piece of pie even if the piece is small.

Crystal- For intent and purposes is almost like the manga but due to the fact it was one to one and the fact they didn't try to slip some of the character development that was in the short stories and Sailor V somewhere if they didn't want to anime them, that why it's a little bit weaker. It exposes certain things that short stories and Sailor V help patch up.

Also certain things they took out from the manga which could have strengthen it ( like Venus crushing on Kunzite to at least strengthen one S/S pairing) actually weaken it. Also the fact Eternal Movies really messed the pacing up with the first movie with the majority of that supposed to be the girls character development. It dragged and felt rushed at the same time thanks to pacing issues.

90's Anime- It is weakest in terms of did these girls actually grow or stay stagnant and become just known by one character trait. ( The Smart One, The Bitch, The Dizzy One and The Strong One) Because really they didn't grow if they are doing the same things they did one season which they should have grow from and doing it in the next season. Screen Time does not equal Character Development at all.

The girls have backstories about their families which is included in the manga and the only one you short of know about is Ami in a 200 episode series. The only birthday you know of is Usagi which in the manga you knew all their birthdays. Since Naoko provides a data chart including their birthdays.  Rei shown to have her birthday twice which was Casablanca Memories and in Infinity arc. We know Mamo birthday is August 3rd since Usagi said it in Act 17 in R arc which he was close to turn 17. Which means Usagi birthday already passed during R arc. Also in the Tale of Princess Kaguya ,Mina and Mako is having a joint Birthday/Christmas party since Mina Birthday is in October and Mako's in December. Meaning that Ami birthday already passed as well since hers in September and they are in December. Meaning that Setsuna Birthday already passed as well since hers is also in October.

I'm going to say it again.

Saying that each senshi got an single episode dedicated to them where each season is 30-40 episodes long to show they got character development is NOT a flex.

It will never be a flex.

Which sometimes two senshi have to share an episode... ( Cough Mako and Mina cough)

Which in some episode guides will tell you to skip their episodes pertaining to them getting their upgrades.

So to me they are not equally weak.

One of them laid the foundation but due to time couldn't properly build like they wanted to but still build on it the best way possible on it while the other had the time to build on and just put a another thin layer of cerement, "pretended" to build on it but never fully did and call it a day.

It's a difference.

…I know, no one actually tagged me or asked to do this meme, but @sailorzakuro invited anyone who wants to take part in this challenge and I’m very eager to, so let’s start!

1) You are a Myu fan since…? Short answer: since 2012, aged 13. 2) The first musical you saw? I always watch and read things in strict chronological order, so that was Gaiden. I think you can see how I went on.

3) Your favourite musical? OMG Eien Densetsu Kaiteban is the best musical ever, it’s got such a great soundtrack and the Senshuraku recording is especially touching!

4) Your favourite Sailor Moon actress? QUEEN ANZA FOR LIFE!!!!111!!1

5) Say one positive thing about every Moon actress. Anza: OMG QUEEN I mean: best singer, best actress, best everything… Should I really go on? Fumina: A nice singer and perfectly in-character for a post-manga Usaghi, very calm and compassed compared to others. Miyuki: If there is a queen in Myu (see before), then Miyuki is the princess, she’s so good at everything she does and I love her dearly… and of course I miss her so much! ;( She’s just so skilled that I think of her as a performer who would definitely deserve to be #1, if only there weren’t someone who is even better… this is without diminishing Miyuki’s ability at all! Plus, she’s the one who made me undestand that nasal voices aren’t necessarily terrible, quite the contrary with her case. Marina: WOW like was she really 12 when she started? I could think of many ways to praise her singing, but the most important thing I think about Marina is just “too good for her age” XD Satomi: I respect her very much because I think she’s the one Myu actress who improved awesomely during the course of time. I mean, I have to admit I’m not a fan of her singing and acting from LR through UNV, but when she returned in LMF she literally blew me away and I couldn’t believe she was the same person considering how much she improved. Hotaru: I can really see how she put her whole heart into her performance and that she loved it to death. I find her very relatable because she’s so fangirly she low-key reminds me of myself!

6) Is Sera Myu your favourite version of Sailor Moon? Er… actually, not at all ‘XD While I am absolutely convinced that the manga is the best version of the franchise and the first anime is the worst one, I’m much more torn apart among the other version… It is very hard for me to do a ranking, because I just can’t decide which I love more amongst Crystal, PGSM and Myu!

7) Who is your favourite cast member? ANZAANZAANZAANZAANZAANZAAAA…

8) Are your first favourites your actual favourites? Oh, yes! Anza, Ayako and Yuta have always been my Top 3 and will forever be. I have changed my mind over many actors, in the sense that I’ve come to like many whom I really didn’t care about at first view, but my best favourites will always stay the same

9) If you could say one sentence to your Myu favourite, what do you want to say to him/her? Nothing in particular, really. I’d rather have her sing Usaghi’s lines from Tabidachi for me to enjoy and worship!

10) Which Sailor Moon story do you want on stage? The manga stories which didn’t make it to the stage so far! I get that the short stories would be almost impossible to adapt, but between the Shining Princess’ Lover and the whole of Sailor V there is enough material to go on for at least three years! After that, they could start with some original material… maybe some story set during the Silver Millennium era?

11) Tell me your Top 3 underrated actors. 1: Tomoko Inami 2: Akiko Miyazawa 3: Miki Kawasaki

12) Give 3 actors new roles. Er… Does Anza as Cosmos count? Because, apart from that, I can’t really think of anything else: it’s because the actors I like have always been cast perfectly spot-on, while the ones I don’t… I’d rather have them have no parts at all XD

13) Combine classic and revival Myu: what does it look like? YES YES YES this is actually my greatest fantasy, I would kill to have a musical which combined the strong plotting and characterization of New Myu with the awesome soundtrack and casting of Old Myu

14) Revival Myu song you want in classic myu? Er… None? I’d rather have the exact opposite XD I mean, there are New Myu songs I do like, but they couldn’t ever even dream to compare to the work of goddess Akiko Kosaka.

15) Tell me an unpopular opinion you have about Myu. (Lightly whispering): I actually dislike Yuka Asami both in terms of singing and acting… I have tried to make myself like her to no avail. Now please don’t kill me! Apart from that, there are also some typical fan-favourites like Nao, Yuka and Chieko whom I love but are just number 2 for me because I think there’s someone even better than them… does this count as unpopular?

16) Ai no Starshine or Music of the Spheres? We hear the music of the spheeeeres… Speaking of New Myu songs I enjoy, this is definitely one of the best for me!

17) The Last Change or its XXI Century version? …Can I answer “both”? Lol, this is still another case of two things that are both so good it’s difficult to choose between them… I love both arrangements, Miyuki is QUEEN in both (yes, Marina is also good, but nowhere near her level IMO) and I am both into slow songs and upbeat ones. Actually, this reminds me very much of the issue I’ve got with Dolce Melodia (a song from the Italian dub of Mermaid Melody which you have to listen to NOW), where, after 11 long years, I still can’t understand if I prefer the original upbeat version or the more emotional carillon arrangement… But, while I am a sucker for both genres, slow love songs are definitely my cup of tea - in fact, my best favourite song in the whole freaking world is the main ballad theme from Beauty and the Beast. And while The Last Change is no love song, the original version has go tthis kind of feel to me, so that’s the one I’ll peek… but that’s been a very hard choice! XD

18) Cho Bi Uranus to Neptune or Harsh Saint Cry? Oh, this is much easier? While I do like both very much, the thing is that First Stage >>> everything else IMO ‘XD So it must be Cho Bi.

19) Is that something about Myu that annoys you? THE FREAKING UNRELEASED MATERIAL       I freaking want to have tapes of the four unreleased musicals so much that I’d die for them! Not to mention the reunion concert that Anza & Akiko made in 2015… Also yes, the speaking over the fankans. That’s pretty common, but there’s a reason if everyone is deeply pissed off by it. And the fact that some of the performances were only shown in snippets

20) What do you expect from the 2019 musical? A lot of things, lol. Actually this is getting pretty long, so if you’re really dying to read my opinion about this (I doubt it’s the case, but still), I’ve already made a complete list of my hopes on the purpose which you can find following the link up there.

21)  How important are dancing abilities of the actors for you? …I actually don’t even pay attention to them, and even if I did, I’m far too uncompetent for it to matter much for me. Sorry for the horrible answer ‘XD

22) Which Myu merchandise do you want? FREAKING VIDEOTAPES OF THE UNRELEASED MATERIAL Also official soundtracks for the New Myu and a more complete collection of the instrumental versions of all Myu songs

Jan 31st, 2004 was the airdate of Act 17, the episode Rei visited her mother's grave and first met Minako at the Church. This Reinako one-shot is a tribute to the episode. It can be read as a stand alone story, or as part of the PGSM sequel Echoes of Time timeline that I’ve been creating.

The scene we've all been waiting for!!!! (Or at least, I've been waiting forever for!) IT'S FINALLY HERE! And there's absolutely no way I'd leave it to screenshots because images can't do it justice.

LIKE LOOK AT THIS! the 3 successions of camera shots with progressively slower replay speed and closer view of those two passing by each other, PLUS THE SOUND EFFECT????!!!! This is absolutely one of the overused filming techniques for the soulmate trope storyline, and they used it on these two!!!! ADSFEWJSKHD

We also see this used earlier in this episode with Usagi, Mamoru, and Hina - the soulmate, forbidden love & love triangle trope.

And when you consider the Minako solo scene just before this, where we see Minako's praying and we have a visual that represent Minako's loneliness, and then THIS HAPPENS AND SHE AND REI MEETS?????

HELLO????? MY GOD! Basically, everything in this scene and episode points to Rei being the person to change Minako's life! If we extrapolate this further, we can even say it symbolizes as Rei being the person to bring Minako out of isolation! HOW POWERFUL IS THAT?!!!!!!

And the same can be said in reverse too! Even though it might just be a plot device to get these two in the same place, Rei met Minako ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF RISA'S DEATH, the crucial incident that started Rei on her path of being a loner as well. Even though Rei has Usagi, Ami and Makoto now, to have met Minako on such as significant occasion adds meaning to their meeting and what Rei and Minako mean to each other. Everything that led to their first encounter with each other gives a "destiny / fated" vibe.

Just from this one scene alone, how can I not ship those two???? I absolutely knew I was in trouble the first time watching this. Everything I see pointed in that one direction, and I can't turn off all the literature, theatre, and film analysis skills my literature classes at school forced into me. Reinako was my first wlw ship I fell in love with and definitely raised a lot of questions about myself as well. LMAO

As I've shared before, I've not a fan of the Senshi transformation sequence, especially coz the CGI really doesn't do it for me, but Venus's is such an exception for me in this!

Venus's transformation has so much personality and swagger!!!! I can care less about the cartwheeling and jumping, but the grace Minako showed when she landed on her feet and begins sashaying towards the camera???? Her transformation happens while she catwalks as if she's a model at a fashion show, even the background is made to look like they are spotlighting her!

AND JFC she poses once her Senshi uniform's completed like she's at the front of the catwalk. 🔥🔥🔥 Then it fades into a sequence where her hair also undergoes transformation, and it looks as if she's doing some kind of hair product commercial!

It is dramatic af but so on brand on multiple layers:

Minako in the live-action is an actual idol, including modeling and commercials.

This is a clever and brilliant way to acknowledge "beauty" as part of Venus's title. I'm actually happy they focused on the "beauty" instead of the "love" aspect, because if they do "love" for Venus, then they'd need to have made some overlapping themes with Moon's transformation as well given the "love and justice".

This is so dramatic manga-Minako would approve the fuck out of this.

The whole sequence is just stunningly different from the format Moon, Mercury, Mars and Jupiter have. And also a bit longer. Venus's full transformation is around 35 seconds long, while the other's full transformation is 30 seconds.

Even the post-transformation posing - the 8 successions of camera angles we get to see, and the focus on the fake crystal, it's like what you'd expect from a fashion showcase video. It continues the theme of a fashion show after the sequence, and the fact that Minako/Venus also actually transformed on a stage??? It gets so meta and I love it!

If I didn't know any better, I'd say Mars/Rei is absolutely smitten. 😏

But I do know better, it's the identity reveal that's the shocker here. But Keiko, could your expression be a little less heart eyes-like? lol

I really appreciate the length the PGSM crew went to expand on details from the original manga materials, even giving Rei's mom a name and showing us the audience the headstone. They could've easily just done a far-camera showed that shows Rei paying respect without the little details.

I absolutely do not know my flowers, but it would also have been a nice touch had they gotten Casablanca lilies instead, which I'm 90% sure these aren't. :P

Okay - two things here:

Okay pastor, REI JUST STARTED HER PRAYER. YOU PROBABLY INTERRUPTED HER?????!!!!!!

Keiko's acting is so good and heartbreaking here. The quick change of emotions from grief to anger? The softness immediately hardened when she opened her eyes at the mention of her father? She is amazing!

My god, the more I thought about what Rei said, the more it tore me to piece, and that's why I need to address it in the subtitles again.

Even though saying "My father stayed at work while my mother was dying" ISN'T wrong, it seriously did not do the emotions behind the words justice given what it meant in the original dialogue. Rei specifically described and accused her father as "the type of person" who abandoned her mother (and her). It wasn't just a statement of fact on what happened, but the wording makes it so that audience is left with no uncertainty that Rei sees that incident as proof of her father's character, using that trauma to generalize and paint her father as a cold, heartless, workaholic politician. That one incident wasn't only traumatic in that it happened, it completely changed her father's image in her mind.

Not to mention - this is hard to capture in English, but the Japanese dialogue specifically referenced the moment when Risa was passing away. This is an important distinction because without knowledge from Act 33 & 34, to just read the word "dying" could mean when Risa's in hospital with a terminal illness with (as an example) a month's time to live, or it could mean the literal moment when Risa life was about to expire. It's ambiguous in its current English translation.

The Japanese dialogue specifying that Rei's father was not at Risa's side when she breathed her last breath, holds more significant meaning and impact than otherwise and helps the audience sympathize and empathize with Rei more. And it helps us see in Rei's perspective, why she was able and willing to draw such a sad but firm conclusion on her mother's behalf, assuming Risa would not want her husband here.

The cartoonish sound that was meant to be the dog's stomach growling in hunger is the most ridiculous sound effect I've ever heard. But I'm too enamored by Rei and Minako's shared warm and heartfelt smile to care. The fact that they both turned to each other at that sound? Rei's giggle only coming out after meeting Minako's gaze? Chef kiss!

These two met each other barely an hour(?) ago, and they are already reacting to things synchronously.

THIS IS ABSOLUTELY MY FAVOURITE REINAKO SCENE, even if short! Why? Because this is the first instance and one of the very few instances we see Minako taking agency to initiate a kind gesture with a peer, voluntarily too. Even in the many Rei and Minako scenes to come, we often see Rei to be the one extending kindness and the one to pursue and initiate interaction with Minako. In most cases, when Minako initiates anything, it's purposeful and serious for the sake of their duties. So I very much consider this scene to be a rare scene where we see Minako interacting with Rei with her guards truly and fully down (because Rei doesn't know Minako the idol nor the fact she's Venus yet). The fact that this resulted in an act of kindness and a desire to share is just absolutely lovely. So lovely that even the dog decides to turn around so he's not intruding on the moment! lol

Also, the Japanese dialogue actually says "のど飴" (nodo ame), which means "throat lozenges". Very on point given Minako's a singer. LOL Not just Miss Dream's subs, but many subtitles, even some of the Chinese subtltles missed the "nodo" part, and just translated it as candy. While I love the idea of Minako loving sweets (a more seemingly innocent trait that also reminds us of Minako in manga and anime), it's actually more true to her character to be very careful and meticulous in taking care of her voice given her job as a singer.

Artemis being the one to watch the news and control the TV explains so much about how Minako can keep up with all developments despite all of her responsibilities as Sailor V, idol, and a student.

I love Artemis so much in PGSM. Also, I really appreciate Artemis's voice actor's approach to Artemis's character. Artemis's voice and tone sound softer when he asks how Minako's feeling.

(Also I randomly learned the other day Artemis's voice actor also voices Kudo Shinichi in Detective Conan and my mind was blown...)

I vividly remember how shocked I was watching this scene the very first time. The moment Minako responded to Artemis with a weak "I'm fine", I knew something was wrong. Ayaka really nailed the glassy-eye look here to show how unwell Minako actually was, and the "I'm fine" just adds a layer of the sad truth that Minako either is used to lying, or this is something she considers normal to her.

I remember the first time I watched this, I wondered if Minako was suffering from injuries from a Youma attack or something, never once actually assuming the "illness" was actually true. I think the illness WAS the ruse for Minako to go into hiding or to give her space to balance being a Senshi, especially when she may need to recover from a battle. :(

JFC Mars's cry of "Princess" is giving me a lot of feels. Beyond worry, there's a hint of urgency and desperation in there, like Rei is seriously so worried for Minako here.

I don't know how Tokusatsu filming works and how far ahead the actresses are given character notes for the whole series and episode scripts ahead of filming, but even in their very first scene together, Keiko portrayed Rei so differently when around Venus/Minako. Every action/reaction, and the emotions conveyed are just so much more detailed and layered than the scenes we typically see Rei show around Usagi/Ami/Makoto - the closest we might get are some significant Rei & Ami scenes such as in Act 15 and 16. It could simply be a coincidence as Keiko matured in her acting as the filming progressed, but I feel like it's more than that. I really wonder if Keiko and Ayaka were informed how intertwined their storyline would be ahead of time?

ALSO! I had to gif this. The filming technique/editing choice here is definitely a parallel to Act 17 when Minako ran in to see Mars in danger.

Admittedly, the pacing in Act 17 was a bit slower since there was more focus on Minako's reaction given her identity was still hidden. BUT, Mars in Act 17 and Venus in Act 18 were downed by the same attack, and the rescuing party ran in just in time to see it happen and both were ABSOLUTELY sick with worry.

I didn't notice this until now and I'm going absolutely feral at this DHASKJFHKEWFHKHER! THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL!

The funny thing is the next little bit can also be seen as a parallel. I'm not screenshotting either scene, but Mars cartwheeling in to intercept the Youma and stand guard in front of Venus is another parallel to Mars cartwheeling in at Nephrite in Act 20!

Rei/Mars just needs to run into Minako's rescue in style. lol

Mars looks absolutely FIERCE standing guard in front of Venus and glaring the Youma down. Venus's stare at Mars's back is also giving me a lot of feelings. Minako looked shocked to see Rei? Is she feeling panicked that Usagi has less protection because Rei followed her? Or is she shocked but grateful that Rei came despite how rough she's been with Rei in their earlier conversation saying Rei's weak as a Senshi?

AMAZING segue from Rei and Minako's mention of Usagi, to bring us to this absolutely hilarious scene as we see Usagi descended into further chaos in her building emotional breakdown.

LMAO Makoto and Ami-chan's eyes look so dead as they watch Usagi appear to be singing her heart out, still no clue what's going on with Usagi.

You gotta wonder how many songs, or worse, how many times Usagi repeatedly sang C'est La Vie to get not only Makoto, but even Ami-chan to look at her like that. lol

Also there's a disco ball they could control in the Senshi Base????!!!! My god this Senshi Base rivals the fun & comfort aspect of the headquarters in Codename: Kids Next Door!

I wonder how many takes Miyuu had to do singing this song, and how hard was it for Mew and Rika to not break down laughing? Maybe I should ask that if/when Miyuu gets to Act 17 in her viewing party. haha
