Realize I never shared this but these are some of my older Pikmin Fanart from October. Using watercolors and my character for my first playthrough on pikmin 4. It was truly my favorite game for a good chunk of time. I still play it when I feel low and it's always a comfort!

Finally played the Pikmin 4 demo last night, never played a Pikmin game before. Drew this cos I decided to use my Kirby OC Puffe as the protag 😂

I might buy it tbh... it sparked old memories of Lego Rock Raiders, idk something about seeing the Pikmin carry things jumped back to the Lego guys picking up Energy Crystals. Really want to play 1+2 first tho...

been playing a LOT of pikmin 4 lately in my off-time and... that game really is just all three previous numbered entries smashed together

they even brought back my most hated enemy in the whole franchise, but it was fine here 'cuz the balancing and pace of things is so much faster

it's neat, i like it a lot

(i'm not really spoiling under here, but some folks might still wanna go in blind, so, natch, read at your own risk)

each game has some overarching gimmick that kinda sets the tone and pace of the whole thing. pikmin 1 feels much more about survival: hurriedly trying to grab all your ship parts (or at least all critical ones) so you can get off the planet before you're no longer able to sustain yourself. pikmin 2 is about dealing with a huge debt, but you got all the time in the world. pikmin 3 is about resource management and cooperation! (technically 2 has this but it's much more pronounced here)

4 on the other hand is really just about... community building?? idk, what this one does is kinda fascinating and showcases how much the previous protags are exceptional by nature, and this time you're just you. you can't even hold a hundred pikmin at first; that doesn't happen 'til way late in the game, and only if you're thorough. you start rescuing a whole bunch of different people, including experts on different subjects who can help bolster your gear and make your pupper a super pupper, and you gradually get better and more resilient by... helping people.

and, idk, 3 started touching on this a little, with cooperation between like-minded, equally talented individuals who are all throwing tiny plant creatures onto very large fruits, but 4 doing this makes me feel like it's a subtly charming and timely game in a way that the first three weren't

not to say it isn't without its flaws (i'm still kinda getting over some of the changes to the game that are largely superficial but nevertheless jarring), but it does add something to pikmin that feels real nice.

you're only able to succeed with community and practice. without that, you don't really grow. it's a neat tiny goal of the game that has enough narrative hooks to not feel blatant but still feel nice when you get the opportunity to see how far everything's come in that li'l world they build.

and, of course, it wouldn't be possible without earlier games largely building on "one big guy can't take on a hundred of us" as a concept

which, i guess all this means, socialism works, and this essay i will-- what do you mean i'm already in essay status.

okay first off i am SO happy that this is actually happening

I like the art style! The graphics are super cute!! Looking at the main character, i genuinely really hope that they aren't customizable? A selling point for Pikmin, at least for me, has always been that the main character(s) are always super well detailed, and we get a lot about how alien this new world is from their reactions!

From the treasure collecting and caves: we're going back to Pikmin 2, babey! I feel like that, at least, is super evident. From the new dog companion to the obvious mechanics and even the shape of the Onion. I assume that this is just because of all the backlash about Pikmin 3, which was undeserved imo?

Also guessing from the graphics and the dog and the character designs we've seen: I guess that this game is going to be a step in a brighter direction from all of the rest of the Pikmin games. One of my favorite things about the Pikmin franchise as a whole was how it stepped into horror with cutesy little creatures at your side-- Olimar was contemplating how he was likely never going to see his family again. Louie's disappearance in the second game. The Pikmin deaths. The enemies. How the protags in Pikmin 3 had to save their whole planet, and almost died trying, and could just totally fail. I hope that this Pikmin game keeps those horrific elements, and I think it'd be doubly effective if they pulled it off well with the cutesy style and mechanics.

Also! The backgrounds and locations!! I'm super excited about the idea of exploring parks and homes and the main characters (possibly) being horrified at the idea that something killed all these giants that were the human race.

Also: the castaway. It's probably one of the characters we've seen before, and I only say that because I feel like the Pikmin team is scared of backlash based off of, like, everything in this trailer. They got enough hate for Pikmin 3's protagonists, so they likely don't think it's a good idea to just get rid of the last protags entirely. Which I suppose is reasonable.

I'm rather curious to see more about the culture that the new protagonists come from. Are they from Hocotate? Koppai? Considering the usage of the word 'castaway,' it's entirely possible that they could be members of an intergalactic traveling species related to both! Or at least that's what I think.

Nonetheless: i'm super excited. I had to wait a few minutes for my heart to calm down before writing this. I do hope it lives up to the 10 year wait! oh jesus it's been 10 years

in pikmin 4, how do the captains know what's happening based on their reactions when they are talking through the communication device?

i like to imagine they have a little built-in camera on both the protag's suit and oatchi's collar :] strapped a go-pro on em, yknow. that might even be what the head antenna is for (communication + mini camera, so the others' view isnt blocked)

My initial theory was that the new pink haired protag of Pikmin 4 is Alph and Brittany's child. Their hair is Brittany's color and close to the same shape but with a tuft of hair on the front that resembles Alph's, their nose is round like most other characters' but small like Brittany's, and they VERY clearly have Alph's eyes, just with eyelashes. My last and biggest piece of evidence is that this gives them the perfect pun oppurtunity of the name "Abby." Get it? Character A, Character B...A-B...Abby!

This theory, however, does have two glaring holes. The first one is that this new protag has pointed ears, meaning they're more likely to be a Hocotation, not a Koppaite, and the second is that Alph doesn't fuck. Listen, you guys can ship him with whoever you want, go wild, but canon has made it very clear, Alph stacks no paper and gets no bitches.

Hi, I'm Lavender, I love Pikmin, and I know... way too much about it. My favorite character is Louie, but that doesn't mean I don't also love the other protags!

My favorite Pikmin Game is Pikmin 2, mainly because it was my first game in the series, but 4 is quickly closing in! I'm almost done, but I won't be reblogging or posting spoilers until I'm done with the main story!
