I edited in the info about Chil being underweight because I crave everyone being painfully aware of it but otherwise fanwikis scare me I’m unlikely to touch it again— the gallery section saves my ass on the regular tho lol. That’s Dandan! He does even have a wiki page. He used to work in gold-stripping along with Laios and Falin, and then was a part of Laios’ party, and eventually introduced Chilchuck to the party(and the marriage seeker mage?)! He has connections alright, and he sure is in the half-foot guild. He is a very minor character so panels of him are limited… Luckily I have a buddy obsessed with him so I have them on hand, this might be literally all panels of him out there idk atp

I recommend reading the extra on Laios’ party formation if you haven’t already, and since it’s pre-canon it’s not spoilery for anime-onlies. There’s also speculation that he may be related to Chilchuck’s wife or Chilchuck himself because of the black curly hair like Fler, the freckles and his heavy lids (his design does differ from appearance to appearance lol but he does generally have noticeably deep-set eyes). Plus the panel below, which may imply he’s always been a family friend… Speculation though as I said, more on it here in the hair section if you’re interested. But if this is right then baby Dandan <3

Unique Magic: "Branching All Out" - So long as the ground has water can make trees of varying sizes rapidly sprout up. The trees are permanent and appearance/type all depend on what tree Michelle was picturing before putting his bare hands on the ground and reciting a tree prayer.

OC’s Lore Summary: A young very active man who gets a little too into the characters and worlds he reads in books. Known as Michelle as he wanted a secret identity like a superhero. Tail often acts like his sidekick reacting to things independently and twitches a lot. At home he is the role model to his little toddler aged twin siblings who love his dramatic showmanship. He loves to see them smile so that has continued at NRC as he loves making others laugh.

Personality: Very open and kind. Often told he doesn't seem like he fits the standard nrc student vibe but he is fine with that. Can flip to an actor like persona where he is more like over the top and funny.

Fun Facts: Is commonly mistaken for a 3rd yr as he wears his dorm uniform alot but he just loves to wear it still. Also is one of the few 4th yrs you can find at nrc but the previous statement makes that hard to know.

For his siblings he puts on small short plays where he and his tail play as either a hero or villain. Sometimes this act comes out of him at nrc and confuses people. Those who know him love it as comical relief which he doesn't mind.

His hair and tail are constantly growing fluffer every 3 weeks. He has to get it tamed or else it becomes a problem.

He participates in all Savanaclaw physical activities & some magic fit games so you can see him outside the library that way.

When too many books are late for return he actually goes into book rescue mode and finds all thoses with late books and gets them to return em asap. The ways he confronts you are dramatic or funny so a few keep books just to witness them.

Crossette and Mothers and Fathers

Crossette has known her mother was dead. But it never really affected her, because she couldn’t remember her mother. She just couldn’t understand the concept of one. But throughout her life, she finds them.

Makino and Dandan are perhaps the only women she will openly, actually call her mothers. They have been there for her since she was six years old and newly abandoned. Years of hugs, and kisses on the forehead, and private time when her brothers were too much. These are memories she holds dear.

She does not find a mother in the East Blue. Perhaps the closest she does is Rika’s mother, but she barely got to know the nice woman, so it doesn’t count. And Nojiko was more of an older sister.

There is surprisingly, a mother in Kureha. Perhaps not in the traditional sense, but Kureha is not a traditional woman. But she is gentle in her own way, as she tends to Crossette’s wounds and praises her resilience against the cold. Crossette does not tell her about her eternally cold father.

Terracotta is a motherly woman, in the brief time at Vivi’s castle. She helps fix Crossette’s torn coat, and even helps cut her curly hair since it had become so damaged and out of control.

Robin is a surprising mother to find. When Crossette looks down from the sky back to the sea and becomes almost sick from her fear of heights, it is Robin’s hands that cover her eyes and pull her away. It is Robin who finds the words to comfort her when she kills for the first time and feels like she can’t get the blood off her hands.

Robin and Crossette cry and hold each other after Enies, when Crossette shares the story of her Father. They bond over the Icy man who’s hurt them both.

There is a mother in Shakky, who helps calm Crossette in her bar, slipping her a sedative to null her fear as her trauma bubbles to the surface. Who tucks Crossette’s hair behind her ear and promises that nothing will happen as long as Luffy is around.

There is no mother to be found in Boa Hancock, not that Crossette wants one. But there is in Granny Nyon, who offers comfort and advice when Crossette falls into despair about Ace. That is the last mother Crossette encounters for awhile.

But the pain of having and losing a father figure is what affects Crossette the most. She seeks out father figures, and finds plenty.

Garp is not a father, he’s a grandfather and that’s how Crossette likes it. But Ace was like a father, even though he was her big brother. Perhaps not a perfect one, but he did his best and that was all that ever mattered to Crossette. She was loved.

There is a father figure in Gin, who pulls her out of the sea after she jumped in there with him to save him from the poison. She didn’t fully save him, but he ruffles her hair once he’s well enough to do so and thanks her with a wide grin. She tells Luffy they’re taking him, and he makes no objections to their new Quartermaster.

Due to strange circumstances, Sanji is also like a father. He mistook her and Luffy for younger than they were, so he becomes protective of her. He stays close by in Lougetown, fighting off a thug who looks at her too long for his liking. Sanji always knows when Crossette is sad, and her favorite snack is always quickly prepared.

Genzo is not a man she spends time with, but she finds herself very jealous of Nami. There is no doubt of his love.

Igaram and Cobra are good father figures. They are compassionate and kind to the whole crew. Crossette is able to leave Alabasta happily knowing that Vivi is in loving hands.

Gin once again proves himself in Skypeia, keeping her safe and taking a blow from Eneru meant for her. He is the one who helps her kill for the first time, doing the most damage to spare her soul.

Franky is not a father, at least not to Crossette. But he is to Rosé and Rosé needs a mother and father. But at least he’s an amazing big brother.

Brook is also more like a grandfather, but Crossette enjoys his company. They sing together, and she is able to sleep better with his music playing. She tells him of how the world has changed, and he tells her of how it once was.

Rayleigh is fatherly to her, joking with her to distract her when the slave house brings her to a panic. His causal insult of her father is also enough to bring her to laughter. He continues to be fatherly over the next two years.

Bon Clay is like Mother and Father in his own odd way. When Luffy is screaming and she is exhausted and finally breaks, it is him who comforts her, hugging her tight in the different forms of her friends that he has, and even in Luffy’s form. He gets her to cheer for her brother, and revives her fighting spirit.

There is still a father in the Lazy Admiral. When he walks away from her in the battle, he takes out five others that were too close to her for comfort. When Teach tries to kill her, the former warlord is just lucky that Shanks arrived, or Kuzan would’ve killed him with his bare fists.

When Kuzan fights Akainu, it’s with two thoughts. The first is that the marines and the world have to become better for his daughter’s safety. And the second is that this man will *not* make an orphan out of his daughter.

Breathing New Life into Magic Cards

What do you do with your cards when they don't have a home in a commander deck?

Make a new format variant out of them!

(well ok, you don't make a revolutionary format from scratch, you steal take inspiration from the paths trodden before)

My name's Cole, I've been a content creator for Commander and EDH for the last 3 or so years. I was introduced to Magic when I was about 6 or 7 years old, read the earliest Magic novels at 10, and officially started playing in 2011 with Innistrad. I've done two podcasts, the Uncommon Commander and the recently started Hero's Blade Vibe Check podcasts that's available in many places!

One of my biggest grievances as Commander player is that 100 cards never seems to be enough for my decks. 36-41% of the deck is dedicated to a combination of a commander(s) and lands. That leaves you with approximately 60~ cards to mess around with, cut, fiddle with, and optimize, depending on your intent and level of investment.

For people who've had lifelong commander decks, that usually means having a Ship of Theseus situation: more cards come out that are circumstantially or objectively better than previous versions. For whatever your end goal is, you add and remove cards for your needs and eventually may even change the commander!

EDH/Commander is not the same beast it was a decade ago, let alone when the original premise was in its infancy. Decks today are much better than what was around in 2011, and sub formats like PrEDH (any card printed before Commander Precons) are an example of the blatant power creep that we players have had to deal with.

As I've evolved as a player and brewer, I've made my peace with having to make compromises with deck building, but there's always that small feeling in the back of my head that says "these cards need a home, and it's not just another commander deck, or selling/trading these off". Duplicating a commander deck for the sake of scratching that itch isn't enough.

I needed to do something. The thought came to me at 5am.

(Well ok, it stewed for a long time before inspiration struck upon waking up at 5am because one of my cats is insanely regimented and wanted breakfast ASAP, so after getting bitten on my arm, lightning strike and I got to work)

Making Killer Queen - A Compromise

So what is Killer Queen, and what does this have to do with finding home for cards?

I've trapped myself as a Magic player. As I stopped playing Standard back in 2014 and more or less dedicated myself to Commander brewing, a lot of skills have fallen to the wayside. I'm terrible at Limited Draft, subpar at Sealed, and have radically changed my viewpoint of 1v1 magic. Brewing a 360 card cube felt impossible to do myself.

So how do I consolidate these feelings and viewpoints? I make a single deck that everyone can play from like the fan format Dandan (aka Forgetful Fish), use only 3 colours (Mardu/Red-white-black), give everyone the same Commander (Queen Marchesa) and make it singleton.

Boom. Killer Queen, aka Marchesa Dandan, aka MarDanDan!

One 155 card deck (plus 2-4 copies of Queen Marchesa) that everyone plays from, one shares graveyard and a bunch of different ways to set up or influence your opponents!

It's been a recent project I've been working on since October 2023, and while games are far and between, it's been my personal answer to my issues of cards being shuffled around decks with no real home, but still having commander-like gameplay that appeals to people in general. Public sentiment so hard? It's a neat way to play Magic, and it's something that can be brought along to game nights in case people want a change of pace.

It's been a great exercise, and makes me go back to my original point: there's a lot of ways to play Magic. There's a lot of ways to engage with Magic that isn't just constructed formats, and you can do it on a budget (or using online creatures like Moxfield's playtest feature in tandem with a digital camera program like OBS).

So where does that leave us?

People are frustrated with the direction Magic: the Gathering is headed, and I encourage everyone to healthily engage with this game we've all come to love, or love to hate, in a way that is satisfying to you.

If you're unsatisfied with Universes Beyond, don't play the cards! (just don't fault anyone for playing them) Go back and look at old sets, and forget the new ones. There's lots of hidden treasure in New Capenna, I hear.

Get back to your kitchen table routes if you have to. Do a Commander League, a deck building challenge, get wild, get crazy! Or take a break! Magic isn't going anywhere right now.

Do a deep dive on Scryfall, whatever it takes for you to enjoy this game in peace.
