i'm having Thoughts so. collection of headcanons about the different home planets in pikmin:

Hocotate - Everybody's favourite :] a small planet that's hot and arid all around, and a little bit boring in the flora and fauna department. Notable for brutal summers and so-so winters, an environment really only suited to growing its famous and unfathomably delicious vegetables.

Vegetable cultivation and shipping is its main industry, but it's also a notable manufactuer of sub-par, barely up to code BUT dirt cheap spacegear :]

(extra hc: while pikpik carrots (as well as hocotate onions, garlic and other veggies) can be cultivated on other planets, no matter how closely those other planets can simulate a hocotate climate, the resulting carrots are noticably different and less tasty. Botanists can't figure out why!)

Koppai - kind of an outsider planet in terms of its culture as well as its literal distance from its neighbours. On the outside, it looks very advanced, with sprawling modern cities, but as we know Koppai has been struggling with a food shortage for a while :(

Notable for leading advancements in space technology, as well as inventing the kopad - a model of tablet which quickly became the base for space travel squad tablets built and used all across the galaxy.

Giya - Home Planet of Shepherd, Russ and Colin, as well as the Rescue Corps HQ. a Big planet, definitely in terms of population and industry, possibly even in terms of literal size.

Its a major hub of space travel facilities and technology, as well as a big hub for planetary immigration! Lots of people from other planets move there, so its got a very diverse population. It also has a large variety of climates as well as flora and fauna (Giya is generally a very "earth-like" planet I think)

Ohri - Home Planet of Dingo and Yonny (though both probably live on Giya most of the time.) A planet famous for its extreme climates both hot and cold, and the abundent and occasionally deadly wildlife in every nook of the planet barring the most developed cities

Ohrians(?) are very passionate about the natural habitats on the planet, and many places have remained protected and undisturbed, but it means that off-planet tourists and Ohri locals alike are just one wrong turn away from danger.

(extra hc: the reigon Yonny grew up in is notable for its poisonous creatures. he discovered his love of medicine while being taught how to make remedies and antidotes by his mother)

Pikmin infection AU!

Body Horror warning below the cut!

Stage 1: everything seems fine. Infected may be fatigued, irritable, or have mild hydrophobia. No outward symptoms are obvious. Internally, however, mycelium growth is taking over the brain tissue, having spread from the respiratory system, where the spores are believed to have entered from. The new blood said they encountered a creature in the field that sprayed them with what seemed to be spores. The subject is to be monitored. -Yonny

Stage 2: infected becomes highly irritable and can be aggressive. Victim becomes paranoid and suffers insomnia and extreme hydrophobia. Veins of mycelium are visible on the skin. Subject is to be quarantined and other crew members will undergo blood testing. -Yonny

She bit me! All I did was carry a glass of water near them, and Pom just lunged at me, screaming about me trying to get them wet! It took both Colin and Shepherd to get em' off me! Doc says everything looks fine... They didn't break the skin... But I'm really on edge, man. -Dingo

Stage 3: infected is zombie-like in behavior. No longer lucid and no longer speaking clearly. The infected will rapidly lose weight, cartilage degrades causing ears to droop, hair is falling out in clumps. Mycelium veins are much thicker and mushrooms are beginning to grow, particularly on the top of the head. Subject tends to wander. I... Think I'm in over my head. I'll need to ask the captain to call in for backup. -Yonny

Stage 4: mushroom growth takes over rapidly. Infected is partially blind and light-sensitive. HIGHLY aggressive, will attack anyone that comes near with a squad of infected Pikmin dubbed 'puffmin' by Capitan Olimar. It will do everything in it's power to escape. And... It has escaped. We're unsure of it's current whereabouts, the thing somehow figured out how to remove the tracker on it's suit. That thing isn't my crewmate anymore. Backup is on it's way, according to Shepherd. We're not taking in any new castaways until we can get control over the situation.- Yonny

I remember seeing what I thought was another leafling back when I was one. They acted so strangely. They were actually about to attack me! However, the glow Pikmin I had with me scared it away. I didn't hear exactly what it said it was mumbling... Something about light. - Olimar

Why is everything except the dog named after dogs in Pikmin 4.

Shepard as in German Shepard

Their pilot is named Bernard. Like St Bernard. Like dog.

The scout is named Dingo

and then Colin and Russ might be a bit of a stretch but maybe Boarder Collie and Jack Russell terrier?

I don’t know about Yonny. But I’m looking forward to Pikmin: Dog Edition.

Also! Schnauz is the name of the guy with the treasure hoard (Schnauzer) and the Piklopedia guy is named Dalmo (Dalmatian)

opinions on the rescue corps?

Olimar: Oh, the Rescue Corps? You mean the folks that helped rescue me and Louie? I am very glad they showed up when they did, or I would have been in a heap of trouble! Even more than I normally get in! Captain Shepherd is a very hardworking woman, and she is great at commanding her crew! Colin is very knowledgeable for his age, I think he would get along good with Alph, as well as that Russ fellow, he certainly seems keen with inventions! Bernard is a very optimistic pilot, I even learned a thing or two from him! Dingo seemed rather tough, but once I saw how he acted when talking to Shepherd, I know he's trying to look cool. Kinda reminds me of me when I was younger... Uh, back to the Rescue Corps. Lisa is a very strong member of the Rescue Corps, especially for being the newest member! They handled the Pikmin like a pro, and even as a "leafling", I somehow remembered their amazing dandori abilities! And Oatchi is such a good boy, he works so well with them, and he's super cute as well! Not as cute as Moss or Bulbie though, but still such a cute and helpful pup! Louie, what would you like to add?

Louie: and don't they go by Pom?

Olimar: Oh, right, I forgot! Yes, they do also go by Pom! Oh, Louie, that reminds me, why did you do...all that...on that exploration?

Louie: ...

Olimar: Sigh, maybe another day.

What to do when you are a leafling: Back at base

(yayyyyy another chapter!!! Ummm well next chapter is going to have Bernard being a team dad so I’m excited for that)

Dingo did the rescue corp salute, thankful that his blushing was hidden by the leaves. Shepered walked up to him as he felt his legs shake. Shepered was about put a hand on his shoulder when Jack hugged Sheperd’s leg.

“Argh! Get them off of me!” Sheperd said, shaking the pikmin off of her leg. Jack was sent high into the air and landed onto the ground face first with a squeak.

“Erma! That’s Jack.”

“Jack? You named it?”

“Them. They’re also an honorary member of the corps!”

“Them.” Shepered said, she backed off a little from Jack and stood next to Colin. Jack sat up, their nose was bent out of shape but a quick flick later straightened it out. Jack then walked to the two and squeaked again.

Erma tilted her head and watched as Dingo nodded with some interest.

“You…you can understand them?” Erma said.

“Thank the leaves for that. They’re saying i’m a rescue corp member too!” Dingo smiled. Jack did a little messy version of the rescue corps salute. They pushed up their bandanna and drew out the glowing toothpick.

Sheperd was silent for a moment and chuckled at that, she slowly picked up Jack and petted the pikmin on the stem. “Now aren’t you a feisty little fella?”

Jack nodded and climbed onto Shepherd's shoulder.

There was a sound of the S.S beagle returning, Dingo stepped aside and began to walk around the area around the S.S Shepherd. There was multiple castaways from various planets. Just how many got the captain’s SOS?

“You and ME Collin! we shall do DANDORI!” A deep booming voice went off. It was Bernard but stuck in that dandori obsession. Bernard hugged Collin tightly. He quickly let go and slapped the coms man on the back.

Collin lurched forward a little, feeling as if his headset was about to fall off. “Not now Bernard, I need to make sure Pom is okay, I’ll be on the ship if you need me.” Collin said he walked into the S.S Shepherd and back to the coms.

Bernard raised an eyebrow and yelled “No DANDORI then?!”

“Great! He has an obsession with dandori too!” Shepherd said, bringing Dingo aside. She also looked behind herself. There was a bald man with glasses on. It was Russ, the smartest giyan she's ever known. If Russ could push his glasses up right now he would. 

“Keehee! I think I know why your head is so clear it must be because of the leaf color! Who turned you?” Russ said.

“Um…A Leafling.” Dingo said, nudging back a little while Jack tilted their head.

“So you’re calling them a leafling? Well then, was the leafling also red right? were they too speaking in clear sentences?” Russ chuckled.

“They were. Russ? Can you make something that will let leaflings breathe in the ship’s air?”

“Oh yes! I think I have enough raw materials laying around.” Russ said while walking away on the edge of laughing.

That evening, the S.S. Beagle returned, it spat out Pom, Oatchi and two leaflings, one had leaves that were tipped with ice and the other was Yonny with Sherry by his side. Yonny sat up and did a small laugh. 

“Ah Commander Sheperd, sorry I couldn’t make it in daylight. It seems I have a nasty habit of…vanishing in the daylight. Heheheeee. Now…it’s time to practice some medicine.”

(Finally I get to break out the Russ and Yonny laughs)

bit the bullet and bought pikmin 4. strugglin' but getting better. today, i found Dingo, aka Everyone's Favorite Idiot, aka transmasc trainwreck, etc

I always have a disconnect between visuals and audio when getting into something, so I'm really stopping to listen to everyone's voices for the first time. (besides Russ n Shepherd's, which are easier to hear without headphones on shitty speakers)

colin's voice is really nice wtf.

leafimar so far sounds really muffled, which... yeah makes sense

i got the game purely to poke around in every corner of the journals and dialogue options cuz wikis ain't cuttin it. i must firmly grasp the literature.

OK so since the pikmin 4 trailer came out I’ve had this crazy theory about the castaway

You remember this part of the trailer with Colin?

Well some people say this character is Louie and I believed it for a little bit because of the blue and faded middle part of the space suit but look closer

He has a whistle connected to the space suit collar. Why is this important? Because in recent games like pikmin 3 deluxe Louie doesn’t have these traits on his space suit

Even in the model the whistle is disconnected to the collar

But you know who does?

ALPH

Along with the blue, it would make more sense if it was Alph because of his collar and the shorter head outline in the helmet

Plus Louie’s color in his portrait is yellow and Alph’s is blue so if it was Louie then the space suit would be more yellow

NOW i’m not saying Louie is not going to be in the game (in fact I’d be surprised if he wasn’t) but I’m just saying that small details can be everything

Getting late for me so wasn't able to completely finish the Pikmin 4 demo. Was not expecting that first sequence with Olimar. So this looks to be a full blown Pikmin 1 AU/reboot rather than just the bad end. Not keen on that ether honestly, what exactly do we stand to gain by not continuing from where 3 left off? Also kind of funny how Olimar casually broke the fourth wall.

Even if it's not outright Pikmin 1's bad end, showing Olimar with the same dog that 'Olimin' had in the trailer is not a good sign for Olimar.

The opening after that felt really slow to me with all the dialogue and the amount of time you spent with just Oatchi to command. I wanted my Pikmin.

Having to upgrade the amount of Pikmin on field is quite the change, fully thought I was getting the Ice Onion at first. I hope there is an Ice Onion, but I've noticed the wording of 'Pikmin with Onions' in some tips. And Ice Pikmin are definitely powerful enough for me to believe they could get the Purple/White treatment.

Was worried that Shepherd (insert Mass Effect joke) might be a bit too similar to Charlie, but I guess her cowardice is distinct. Colin I have no real opinion on yet, only just saw some of Russ's dialogue before having to stop but he seems to have potential. Praying for distinct Piklopedia entries like 3 Deluxe. Also miss the end of day journals/letters.

Went back to base to gather my Pikmin before getting into the ice cave, so felt foolish when the game explained everyone would come down with you no matter where they were. Which is how it worked in Pikmin 2. Not a huge time loss but I felt it.

The areas really do feel massive in this game, overwhelming even. I could see the second landing area but didn't actually reach it because I was exploring alternate paths, so by the time I noticed it the day was about to end. Hoping I can make the starting landing spot more convenient by using clay to finish the bridge near it, that seems like what it'll be used for.

Looked through gameplay hints and saw confirmation that side stories from 3 Deluxe is a returning mode. Happy about that. Almost sounds a bit like a soft remake of Pikmin 1.

Oh and one annoyance I have is that when I have two Pikmin knock down a pellet only one ends up carrying it. I used two for a reason. Feels more clunky now trying to set up maximum efficiency for the pellets.

For caves I'm wondering if this is going to be like Pikmin 2 where the introduction was fixed but the majority were randomized. Hoping we don't go back to randomization personally. Also if time is going to progress in future caves, what happens if it's sundown and you're still in the cave? Do you get kicked out? Or do you simply get sent right to the end of day once you exit the cave?

Also intrigued by the possibility of caves as a passageway. Could see some interesting level design coming out of that. Looking forward to wrapping up the demo and not looking forward to the incoming Pikmin 4 withdrawal symptoms.
