Day 19 - Hornillos to Castrojeriz
(Posting delay of yesterday’s walk as there was rubbish signal and wifi at the albergue)
It was about a 20k day, 12 miles or so.
Each day when we set off I think ‘what on earth am I going to write about today? It’s not a long day, we eat, we walk’ and each day something different happens…so here’s today’s story.
After a reasonable night’s sleep we were rudely awoken by an alarm going off at 6, and people shuffling about and opening the door. Then the light went on, hrmph!
We had breakfast at the hostel then set off about 7:20 with full packs today. My blisters have now all healed so I walked without plasters, and Jane was walking for the first time without strapping her feet up too. Jane’s heel is also OK after rest.
There was a steady climb out of the valley onto the plateau at the top. It was a cooler morning but we still stripped of our jackets half way up. The land is very open with chalk white soil on the hillsides. The fields are full of barley or wheat and young poppies are just starting to appear on the verges and you can see that in a couple of weeks it will look gorgeous.
Across the plateau we started having a go at the Welsh national anthem. My Bethan is going to send through a line a day to learn so we should have it sorted by the time we finish!
We were caught up by an Irish couple who had heard the ‘singing’ and we chatted about our journeys. They were travelling light and doing it in stages so soon sped past us.
Scott also caught us up and we walked down into Hontanas together for our first proper coffee of the day. Hontanas is a nice place that just suddenly appears as it’s down in a dip. On the way out we passed an old 2CV, haven’t seen one of those for ages, and whereas you usually see a fountain cherub having a wee, today we saw a full sized version!
The path followed a nice valley and where it joined the road again we found a comfortable spot under a proper tree to have a rest and change into our sandals.
The road eventually led to an old ruined monastery at San Anton where there was a huge arch over the road and where some of the old buildings had been preserved as an albergue.
The last stretch on a long straight road brought us to Castrojeriz looking impressive in the distance with a castle on the hill and church down below.
Our hostel is clean and the beds not too rickety. It is also unusual as the evening meal is South Korean inspired.
We dumped our stuff then found a cafe for a beer and some lunch for me - I had been looking forward to a wedge of tortilla. We met up with the Texans in the same cafe though they are sleeping elsewhere tonight. We clocked that the church was closed so would visit it later.
Back at the hostel it was time for a shower and a chill. We then had a mammoth session sat in the garden planning out the rest of our trip. Nicole, the Australia, was planning on celebrating her birthday on the 15th of May in Herrerías so we’ve worked out how to get there for then. At the moment it looks like we may get to Santiago on the 24th May and fly out on the 28th, but things can change.
We decided that after all that hard work we deserved a glass of wine so started making our way to the local bar. The clouds behind were very ominous.
The church on the way was open so we thought to drop in there first. It’s a museum as well and the guardian very enthusiastically talked about some of the exhibits, in Spanish, so we nodded along enthusiastically too!
As we reached the entrance again the skies started to open up. We decided the better course of action was to get back to the hostel. As we were running back it started hail storming! A bit damp we got back and watched the streams of water running down the street.
After a while we were called to dinner. The Korean meal was delicious. There was rice on the bottom and different veg arranged on top along with ground beef. You then added a fried egg, soy sauce, miso soup and as much spicy red sauce you could manage and mixed it all together. We’ve got quite a few Koreans in the bunkhouse and they enjoyed it very much.
We’re now in our bunks listening to the thunder outside. The bad weather is due to move off tonight and we should have a dry day tomorrow, fingers crossed.

Cork City Libraries Sustainability Blog | Seed Library at Hollyhill
May is that wonderful time of year when everything really begins to start happening; fresh foliage on trees as well as an abundance of wildflowers brings a splash of colour and fragrance to the city, reminding us that it’s a great time to start planting.
Hollyhill Library has a great selection of both vegetable and flower seeds available to borrow from its new Seed Library! The Seed Library is Cork City Libraries first and currently only seed library in its service, and taking packets of seeds works in a similar way to borrowing books. Members of Cork City Libraries can take packets of seed for free, and once you have planted the seeds and enjoyed the fruits of your labour, we then ask that you save a portion of the seeds from the plants and donate them back to the library for others to sow and enjoy.
If you do not know how to save seeds, panic not, we have lots of gardening books available for borrowing on this very subject and if you keep an eye on our social media, we have talks and workshops sporadically throughout the year all about gardening - In April as part of the Cork Life Long Learning Festival, Bethan Lucas gave a talk on the importance of seed saving and practical tips on how to save seed.
Something that you can sow in abundance now that the weather is getting warmer, is cut-and-come again salad greens like lettuce, rocket, and oriental greens. When planting the seeds, you can either scatter the seeds all over the soil and then thin them out later or plant the seeds about 5 centimetres apart in nice even rows. They do not need to be planted very deep, I have mine in a discarded roasting tray. Once planted make sure to keep the soil moist, (I mist mine with a recycled spray bottle) and keep in a sunny windowsill. Within a week you should see little green shoots bursting through the soil. We stock these seeds in the Seed Library in Hollyhill Library.
This year I’m also sowing cosmos, cornflowers, pot marigolds and Californian poppies. Simply sprinkle the seeds over a sizeable area (my biggest pot is 40cm so I used this one but the bigger the better), gently press down into the soil, or sprinkle a new layer on top, making sure no seeds can be seen, give them a good soak and that’s it! The seeds should start to sprout in about 2 weeks’ time.
For sowing delicate seeds or if you just want to give them a bit more a fighting chance to grow before they encounter slugs and snails, sowing them indoors in a seed tray is a great idea. Not to worry if you do not have a seed tray, the inner tube of a toilet roll cut in half is perfect for incubating seeds. Once the seedling is a couple of centimetres tall and sprouting several leaves it is time to plant out in the garden, either into a bigger pot or if you are lucky enough to have a proper garden, out into the flower beds. You can also use this method for growing salad leaves.

Below is my ranking of the episodes from the 2016 Amazon/BBC limited series, "THE COLLECTION". Created by Oliver Goldstick, the series starred Richard Coyle and Tom Riley:
RANKING OF "THE COLLECTION" (2016) EPISODES
1. (1.04) "The Launch" - Under pressure to create the Spring show, the Sabine family's fashion house, The Maison, is a hive of activity. But designer Claude Sabine is not creating and a seamstress-turned-model named Nina is focused on finding her illegitimate child. American journalist Stanley Rossi returns to question Paul Sabine's former boss and mentor, forcing Paul to punish those he loves.
2. (1.06) "The Weekend" - The inner circle of The Maison spend a weekend at investor Jules Trouvier's chateau. There, the Sabine family is rocked by untimely revelations, surprising alliances, relationships and a betrayal that may be damaged beyond repair.
3. (1.02) "The Dress" - The new business marriage with Trouvier is only hours into its honeymoon, when he and Paul clash over how to run the house. With millions at stake, Nina is thrust into the unlikely role of a couture model and events take a darker turn during a photo shoot.
4. (1.07) "The Betrayal" - Everyone at The Maison is somber following a staffer's road accident, and Helen's attempts to help using her family connections, only raises troubling wartime questions for Paul. Charlotte meanwhile begins her counter attack on the business and threatens to expose Claude as the true genius behind the Paul Sabine label.
5. (1.01) "The Deal" - Rising fashion designer Paul Sabine is offered the keys to a kingdom when he resurrects his family's fashion house. But he needs the help of his volatile brother, Claude, the true genius behind the label.
6. (1.08) "The Offer" - In the final episode, Paul fights to maintain The Maison, while his mother Yvette Sabine tries to broker relations between her sons. Nina and American photographer Billy Novak must decide where their future lies.
7. (1.05) "The Afterglow" - Paul's glory is short-lived and instead of basking in the afterglow of a jubilant show, he is questioned about a dead body found buried on his family's farm. Meanwhile, Claude declares he is no longer happy to stay in the shadows.
8. (1.03) "The Scent" - Tormented by personal demons, Claude goes to dry out in the country. Meanwhile, secrets from the past war begin to spill out when a dead body is found on the Sabine family's farm and Paul becomes aware of an investigation into his former boss' past.

if you haven’t watched in my skin on bbc iplayer i highly recommend it because it’s filled with such light hearted moments blended with hard hitting very emotional scenes the way bethan had to juggle her very intense home life as well as her teenage life with romance etc; cam and beth never had the same type of chemistry that beth and poppy had their chemistry was so intense and it was revisited in series two poppy was jealous and clearly heartbroken that bethan was with cam but i felt like bethan still liked poppy even though she had moved on.

#can we just talk about this whole scene like what does it mean? when beth kisses cam she looks over at poppy intensely waiting for her to notice her gaze then the minute they both lock eyes beth just looks away smiling to herself as if to say she loves the fact that poppy is jealous and deep down even though she’s with cam she will always harbour some feelings towards poppy. and travis in the background jut seats behind beth captures it all.
