"The thing that I built this nation for doesn't exist anymore! The th- the thing that I worked towards, doesn't exist anymore. It's over!"
Wilbur held onto the back of the wooden chair that stood in the middle of the stone room. He stared at the oak button, which seemed to be starring back at him
"Wil?"
A sudden voice snapped him out of his rant. A female voice. A voice that sounded a lot like-
"Kristin?"
Wilbur looked up to the doorway see none other than his own mother
"Wilbur, what are you doing?"
Kristin stood in the doorway, a blank but almost sad look on her face, her brows furrowed
"Wha- I- How? How- Why are you here? I- I don't remember you ever-"
"Wil, I got worried sick. I just wanted to make sure you're okay" She walked up to Wilbur, just now noticing how different he looked. His skin was turning a pale grey, and the bags under his eyes were a lot darker than she remembered
She took his hand in hers, noticing how cold to the touch he is "Kid, what has been going on with you?"
Wilbur swallowed hard. This is not what he was expecting today
"W- well, we- we just made Tubbo president, and- and, we won the war! We won the war, Schlatt's gone!"
Wilbur was quick to tear his hand away from his mother's, running it through his hair and putting his other hand on the back of the chair again, facing towards the wall the oak button was placed on
Kristin knew he wasn't okay, but she had no clue it was ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ด bad. She crossed her arms and looked at Wilbur
"Uh huh. So if everything is all fine and dandy, then why did you stop sending letters? Then why is your skin so cold? Then ๐˜ธ๐˜ฉ๐˜บ" She pointed to the button on the wall "is that there?"
Wilbur swallowed hard again and turned back around to look at her "Do you know-" He turned and motioned towards the button "what this is? Do you know what it does, Kristin?"
"Yeah, I do" She shifted her weight to one foot, giving her son a look of disapproval. You know the one that only parents can make? Yeah, that
"Have you heard t-the song on the walls, before?" He gestured all around him, to the words scribbled on the walls "Have you heard the song? I was just saying, I made this big point, and it was- um- that- there ๐˜ธ๐˜ข๐˜ด a special place where men could go, but there's- it's not there anymore- it's not-" Wilbur leaned on the wall, his arm above his head as he looked down
"But, it is there Wil," She dropped her arms and shifted her weight to be balanced again "You just won it back!"
"I- KRISTIN, I'M ALWAYS SO CLOSE TO PRESSING THIS BUTTON, KRISTIN"
Wilbur lashed out, whipping around to face his mother again
"I've been here like- seven or eight times, I've been here! Seven or eight times!"
Kristin jumped at the sudden shouting. Her face went from disapproval to shock in seconds flat, and Wilbur seemed to notice this, lowering his voice
"Kristin I've- I've been here so many times" He put his face in his hands then looked up again at the sounds of fireworks going off just outside the room they were standing in "They're fighting, they're fighting!" He gestured to the wall that was closest to the sounds
Kristin sighed then chuckled "And you want to blow it all up? Just like that?" She looked up at him, smiling sadly
Wilbur sucked in air through his teeth then sighed aswell "Yeah- yeah, I do. I really do. I think I-" He put his head in his hands again, leaning his back against the wall again. Right next to the button
"Shit, Wil, you fought limb from limb to get this your land back, and now you just want to blow it up?" Kristin gestured to the button with her hands before dropping them to her sides again
Wilbur dropped his hands to his sides as well, looking back up at Kristin "Kristin, I don't- don't know if the button works anymore, I could- I ๐˜ค๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ญ๐˜ฅ press it-"
"Don't you ๐˜ฅ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ Wilbur" She was quick to cut him off "Don't even think about it. You fought ๐˜ด๐˜ฐ hard to get your land back, and for what? For ๐˜ธ๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ต son?! Only for you to go and blow it up?" She stepped closer to Wilbur looking straight up at him "Do you ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜บ want to take that risk? There is, presumably, a ๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต of TNT attached to that one button" She backed up from him, realizing she was a bit in his face
Wilbur turned away from his mother, looking down at the button
"Kristin... there was a saying, Kristin. Uh, by a traitor. Uhm, once part of L'manburg. A traitor, I don't know if you've heard of them, Eret?"
Kristin chuckled and crossed her arms again, looking at Wilbur "Yeah, I've heard of 'em."
Wilbur turned back around to her, looking at her with cold eyes
"He had a saying, mum"
Kristin was caught of guard. He hasn't called her mum in years. What-
He looked up at Kristin and smiled
"... It was never meant to be!"
He turned away from her and hit the button with his fist
Kristin gasped, her heart beating faster "Holy shit. Wil, you didn't-"
The next thing she knew, there was a loud bang, and she hit her head on the back wall of the room they were in from the force coming from the blast
After about 30 seconds of being stunned, she opened her eyes and looked up, seeing the outside of L'manburg. She gasped for air, the air being knocked out of her once she hit the wall
"Holy ๐˜ง๐˜ถ๐˜ค๐˜ฌ!" She exhaled. She looked at Wil, still somehow standing where he was before, scorch marks on his clothes and, she assumed, skin
"Wil!" Her breathing was raged and she struggled to stand up. Damn her for not wearing any armor
"Wil, what the fuck?!"
She staggered next to him, regaining her health bit by bit. "It's gone, it's all gone"
Wilbur took a deep breath and swallowed
"MY L'MANBURG, MUM! MY UNFINISHED SYMPHONY, FOREVER UNFINISHED!"
He spread his arms out, exclaiming out, it seemed, to himself more than anyone else. He whipped around to look at her "IF I CAN'T HAVE THIS, THAN NO ONE CAN MUM"
That's when she realized. Kristin wasn't dealing with her son anymore. No, this was someone she doesn't know. A deranged man who looks like her son, her sweet boy that she and Phil raised. God, what would Phil say right now?
"Kill me Kristin, Kristin" He took her hand and placed a diamond sword in it, wrapping her fist around it and pointing it towards his neck "๐˜’๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ญ ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ"
Kristin tore her hand away from his grasp, still holding the sword "I can't- ๐˜ ๐˜–๐˜œ'๐˜™๐˜Œ ๐˜”๐˜  ๐˜š๐˜–๐˜•! ๐˜”๐˜  ๐˜–๐˜ž๐˜• ๐˜๐˜“๐˜Œ๐˜š๐˜ ๐˜ˆ๐˜•๐˜‹ ๐˜‰๐˜“๐˜–๐˜–๐˜‹!"
"KRISTIN, KILL ME!" He took her by the shoulders and looked her in the eyes. Wilbur didn't looked deranged anymore, no. He looked more dessprate than anything
She tore away from his grasp again
"NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO-"
Wilbur banged on the wall of what remained of the room they were in before before looking back at his mother
"Mum, this isn't- Like- Look, look!" He gestured to the group of people that gathered around the explosion "How much work went into this and it's gone?"
"WILBUR SOOT WATSON, YOU LISTEN TO ME" She threw the diamond sword down the hole the explosion made, planning for someone to grab it. She faced Wilbur with a pissed of expression
Wilbur seemed thrown off for a second, then shook his head
"Kristin, you don't understand the depth of this!-"
"NO, YOU SHUT THE FUCK UP AND LISTEN TO ME. YOU ARE MY FLESH AND BLOOD, SOMEONE ME AND YOUR FATHER RAISED WITH OUR OWN BARE HANDS, WHO I WAS WORRIED SICK ABOUT BECAUSE YOU STOPPED SENDING ME LETTERS, SOMETHING YOU HAVE NOT MISSED FOR ANYTHING IN YEARS." She started to pace back and forth in the small floor space they had, with tears in her eyes "SO I DECIDE TO COME AND SEE IF MY SON HAS DIED AND NO ONE HAS TOLD ME YET. AND YET, HERE I AM, BEING BEGGED BY MY OWN KID To-...."
She stopped in her tracks and looked down and took a deep breath and breathed out a shakey breath
"To ๐˜ฌ๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ญ him...?" She looked back up at Wilbur "I ๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ฏ'๐˜ต"
"Wil I- I don't ๐˜ฌ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ธ what's happened between now and when you lived with me and your father, hell, since your father passed, but... I don't recognize you anymore. You're not my sweet boy who liked to cause trouble sometimes. And yes, I know that comes with growing up, but..." She stepped closer to Wilbur, setting her hand on his arm, only for him to rip away from her hand
"Wil, I-" She sighed, deciding to fiddle with her necklace "Son, I really don't know what's been going on with you, but ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ด" She gestured to the giant hole in the wall "Isn't normal. Or good, in any way" She laughed sarcastically, looking out to the world. The group of people still gathered at the edge of the giant hole, their terrified faces boring into her. Her smile faltered, and she looked back at Wilbur
"Wil, I'm not promising anything will go back to the way it was. But just... talk to me, please? After that, you can decide to do whatever the hell you want, but... you should at least be able to talk to your mother"
Wilbur was silent, a look of contemplation, and almost confusion, on his face
"Kristin, I- You- you're not-?" He ran his hand through his hair "I don't get it! You're not angry at me in any way? Even for ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ด?!" He gestured to the giant hole in the wall, and seemingly, to the group of people "They sure as hell are! ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜บ, want to see me dead! I destroyed their country, mum!"
"No, what you did was destroy land. Buildings, ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ด, that can be re-built, son." She grabbed his forearms, taking them in her hands "You need help, kid. And I don't know if I'm the person to do it, but damnit, I can't sit by while I watch my son spiral into insanity." She then pulled him into a hug
"Let me help you, Wilbur"
That was it. That's what broke him
He broke down crying, hugging his mother back, grabbing onto the back of her shirt for dear life
They both ended up on the floor, with Wilbur crying and clinging to his mother like a child who got hurt, and Kristin holding him, rubbing circles into his back and crying silently to herself
Kristin finally had her son in her arms again. And she wasn't planning on letting go any time soon
