To All Creators

Remember when you were in the fourth grade and the art teacher handed you some construction paper, safety scissors and Elmer's glue before giving you some vague instructions on how to make a 3-d jungle panaroma? You were so excited! (That weird kid next to you was excited, too, cause he loved sniffing the glue . . . wonder what happened to him?) You set to work on creating masterpiece! It'll be the best darn construction-paper-art-project-thing ever! Grab the scissors (blue if your boy, pinkish-orange if you were a girl, or whichever color if you were a progressive-thinking 4th grader!) Fingers working like Zeus' lightning! Heart racing. Little drool in the corner of your mouth . . . Where's that toilet paper roll you were gonna glue to the paper so the grey-elephant really looks like he's charging outta the jungle? Did the weird kid eat it? No matter! No time for regrets! Improvise! Tick-tock! The art teacher is coming! Glue! Scissors! Silverback Mountain Gray Gorilla Crayola! So close! Heart pounding. Legs shaking. A little pee in your shorts . . . Teacher closes in . . . One more dab of glue! Closer she comes! One more mark of the Crayola! DONE!   She's standing over you. She's judging.   "Nice," she says. You feel worthy! "But where's the elephant's trunk?" OH!!! SOUL CRUSHED! You'll never touch another Crayola for as long as you live.

If you've ever set out to create something then you've probably experienced some form of criticism against your efforts. On the otherhand, if you get no notice of your effort then that can be as heartbreaking.

It's all par for the course as a creator fo any medium. And yet, you can still find us out here in the big ol' wild yonder of the Netverse.  

We slices pieces of ourselves away and put those pieces out there on display for others to consider in any capacity they wish -- whether surface or in search of more elusive profoundess. But we slice away.

And sometimes, sometimes . . . people come and they encounter those pieces we've cut from our own heart and souls and they experience something. What they experience is personal to them and I won't even feign putting prose to their experiences. But they do experience something that can range from anywhere to admiration and joy to terror and revulsion, or anger, or mere dislike, or runofthemill indifference.  

But I think most creators become shy and reserved out of fear of having the pieces of them trampled on and spat on. A phobia so intense that if it comes to be true they could be plunged into an existential crisis of potentially no return!

And yet, here we are.

Creators. Creating.

Don't turn your back on the Crayon. Make it create more boldly!  

Do it in memory of that weird glue-sniffing kid!
