Enhancing Eye Health and Vision with Chinese Herbs
Maintaining healthy eyes and clear vision is essential for our overall well-being. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), a holistic approach is taken to promote eye health, focusing on nourishing the organs, improving circulation, and restoring balance. Chinese herbs have been used for centuries to support eye health and enhance vision. In this blog, we will explore some popular Chinese herbs known for their beneficial effects on eye health and vision.
Wolfberry (Gou Qi Zi)
Wolfberry, also known as goji berries, has long been revered in TCM for its vision-enhancing properties. Packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, wolfberries help nourish the eyes and protect against oxidative stress. They are believed to improve visual acuity, reduce dryness and irritation, and strengthen the optic nerve.
Chrysanthemum Flower (Ju Hua)
Chinese yam is known for its tonifying properties, particularly in strengthening the kidneys and nourishing the liver. In TCM, the health of these organs is closely linked to eye health. By enhancing kidney and liver functions, Chinese yam helps improve vision, particularly in cases of blurry vision and night blindness.
Chinese Yam (Shan Yao)
Chinese yam is known for its tonifying properties, particularly in strengthening the kidneys and nourishing the liver. In TCM, the health of these organs is closely linked to eye health. By enhancing kidney and liver functions, Chinese yam helps improve vision, particularly in cases of blurry vision and night blindness.
White Chrysanthemum (Bai Ju Hua)
White chrysanthemum is another herb widely used in TCM to support eye health. It is particularly effective in treating conditions such as blurred vision, dry eyes, and excessive tearing. White chrysanthemum is believed to have a cooling and nourishing effect on the liver, helping to alleviate eye discomfort.
Chinese Skullcap (Huang Qin)
Chinese skullcap has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, making it beneficial for eye health. It is often used in TCM to address conditions such as conjunctivitis, red eyes, and eye allergies. Chinese skullcap helps reduce inflammation, soothes irritation, and promotes healthy circulation to the eyes.
Conclusion
Incorporating Chinese herbs into our daily routines can provide a natural and holistic approach to support eye health and enhance vision. However, it is essential to consult with a qualified TCM practitioner or herbalist to determine the most suitable herbs and appropriate dosages for individual needs. Additionally, it is important to remember that Chinese herbs should complement, not replace, conventional eye care practices. By combining the wisdom of traditional medicine with modern approaches, we can take proactive steps to maintain healthy eyes and clear vision throughout our lives.

Euphorbia helioscopia, the sun spurge, growing wild on the hill above my school. Read more below about this fascinating herb. Learn more about our online courses on herbal medicine & aromatherapy in jointheflow.net Discover my books on bodywork and more: amzn.to/3xhaNey It is a herbaceous annual plant, native to most of Europe, northern Africa, and eastward through most of Asia. Folk names include wart spurge, umbrella milkweed and madwoman's milk. In Chinese medicine, it is known as ze qi. It belongs to the category " Herbs that Transform Phlegm and Stop Coughing". It is used externally (e.g. in scrofula ointments) and internally. However, it does have some toxicity, and caution is needed. The sap contains a latex which is toxic on ingestion and highly irritant externally, causing photosensitive skin reactions and severe inflammation, especially on contact with eyes or open cuts. The toxicity can remain high even in dried plant material (pfaf.org). According to Dan Bensky: "An interesting food therapy for abdominal edema and ascites, noted by the contemporary physician Zhou FengWu, calls for the patient to boil two eggs in water with 15g of Euphorbiae helioscopiae Herba (ze' qi). The liquid is discarded and the eggs are eaten. This is to be repeated daily. He also had some concerns about this herb, noting, "Generally, the dosage should not be high, as overdosage can lead to adverse reactions such as pallor, weakness of the limbs, vertigo, nausea, and vomiting."  Photo taken by me, all rights reserved. #euphorbia #euphorbiahelioscopia #sunspurge #toxicplants #toxicherbs #poisonousplants #chineseherbs #tcm #chineseherbalmedicine #traditionalchinesemedicine #wildmedicine #greekflora #greekherbs #herbnerd #wildherbs #botany #botanicalmedicine #medicinalherbs #myherbalstudies #healingherbs #foraging #herbalistsofinstagram #herbalremedies #primitiveskills #survivalskills #urbanherbalist #herbalremedies #apothecary #ethnobotany #ethnobotanist (at Athens, Greece) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChZIyn9LC-3/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Skin diseases in the elderly can be life-threatening and significantly impact their quality of life. These conditions are closely tied to the aging process. The skin, our largest organ, constitutes about 15% of our total body weight. The natural aging of skin involves:
1. Reduced body fluids, leading to lower skin moisture and dryness.
2. Shrinkage and decreased sweat gland function, causing less sweating and affecting skin moisture.
3. Decreased sebum gland activity, resulting in dry skin.
4. Diminished nutrient supply to the skin.
5. Aging leads to the relative decline in skin pigment cell metabolism, neuroendocrine function, and immune capabilities.
The "Huangdi Neijing - Suwen" emphasizes, "Dryness leads to dryness." Dryness can damage body fluids, affecting body nourishment and causing dryness symptoms, like dry mouth, throat, and skin, even leading to cracking. Dry skin is common among the elderly.
Many elderly patients experience skin dryness, notably on the lower leg's front, with skin that is prone to patterns, scaling, tightness, and itching, and scratching can lead to marks and scabs.
After a two-week treatment with Chinese herbal medicine, an elderly patient reported substantial improvements. Treating skin diseases in the elderly typically focuses on nourishing the Yin essence of the five organs, often combined with the use of highly moisturizing skincare products like Vaseline for effective results.
*Due to the patient's remote residence, follow-up appointments are challenging. Efforts are underway to reach the family and hopefully obtain updated photos of the elderly patient.
