THE IMPERFECTLY PERFECT FAIRYTALE

The deal breaker which leads to the ultimatum

Who gives your boyfriend an ultimatum to get married? 11 years, 2 kids, 1 dog and more moves than a typical family endures. Isn’t this reason enough to demand a wedding? I love parties. I plan the most fantastic, over-the-top parties. Gearing up for the grandest party of all- my wedding. D has been married 400 times (exaggerated slightly) and 3 kids before me. When shit got real for us, I gave him a “deal breaker”-marriage and 2 kids. The swirl of our love affair made our heads spin at times. We should have slowed down, but that love train wasn’t stopping and boy was it fast. We let the “universe” guide us. Amélie showed up in a quick blink of an eye. Binding us together forever. While she was latched onto my boob, news came…a beating heart named Hudson. 2 babies in diapers was ALL CONSUMING. When I met D, divorce with wife #2 was not wrapped up in a pretty bow. Divorce isn’t pretty and his was never-ending. We moved from L.A. to NY for a t.v. series. We were in our NY bubble, but the show ended up being too toxic for us to continue. Hits were coming and life got real hard, real fast. We craved simplicity and moved to my hometown, Lafayette, Louisiana.

6 years went by and wedding planning was still on the table….until it wasn’t. Life was taking its toll and things were shifting on that damn dime.

Confession

He no longer wants to get married. “If its not broke…” He said his marriages failed and he didn’t have the need to get married again. This haunted us for years to come. I wouldn't surrender to being just "partners." A thorn was planted until…

The fake proposal

One memorable night in New Orleans, we were sending him off to a job in Vancouver not knowing when we would see him next. Coronavirus didn’t play fair. While blow drying my hair, he got down on a knee in front of our kids and we all laughed our way through him proposing. The next morning I text “are you still my fiancé?” We never called it an engagement. It didn’t feel real, because it wasn’t Going through the motions of life with no wedding pending started to weigh on me. The gesture of spending our lives together was real in the moment, but the actual promise to get married seemed futile, if nothing else.

We added a fur-ball, Riley, to the bunch. The 5 of us drove to our new home, Vancouver. Something about this move solidified our family even more- our resilience to weather incredible feats. 50 was knocking on my door. I felt I earned the right to be married. It was important to the kids I became a Walsh. I gave the ultimatum—we would be married by the time I was 50 or…. The question became “Or what?” On a random night, while we were listening to music, dancing with the kids in the kitchen- D says “let’s have that party you always wanted. Let’s get married. D & L deserve this.” Save the dates were sent and the perfect dress was found.

And then…

He sat on the side of our bed and gave me the news. To say this news was chilling to me is an understatement. “It’s not a good time…..” “We need to postpone….” After that it all became a garbled noise coming out of his mouth. When is it ever going to be a good time? The ultimatum stayed in place- 50 or nothing. Through a lot of negotiations and my Mom navigating what seemed to be impossible, the wedding was on. New Orleans was the ultimate destination. Once our venue was set, everything fell into place. Those circumstances faded somewhere in the background. D & L would finally have their day.

A Bride at 50

Wedding dress fitting was one of my favorite parts of the whole process. I was doing it all by myself- FaceTiming my Mom and even my 10 year old daughter one time. I found a random jeweler and created my ring with a stranger. Planning to be a bride at 49 is a daunting task. The dress I chose 11 years earlier at 39 was no longer interesting to me- it was pristine white, sleek and chic. It showed off my flawless body. At 49, my metabolism slowed to a turtle crawl. Cellulite inevitably found its way to me. My dress designer asked me adjectives when describing my wedding dress. It was now ethereal, whimsical and romantic. When I put on Faye (which is the designer’s name of the dress) I felt youthful, yet age appropriate. The color reminded me of my favorite glass of sparkling rosé. I could go on and on about the skin regimen I did to try not to look 50 at 50. It was a humbling experience.

The Real Proposal

I joked with the kids I wanted a real proposal. Amélie said: "she needs to have her make-up on, hair fixed, nails done and have a pretty dress on." I orchestrated where I wanted them to propose- the kids and Riley all watched while D got down on a knee with the most important ingredient....the ring.

The Most Ridiculous Fantastic

June 3, 2022 D & L threw the party of our lifetime. The most important people to us showed up. Having Amélie and Hud present at our wedding was more than I could ever dream. NOLA was the perfect backdrop. I turned 50, 3 days before my wedding. I have never felt more beautiful than I did on my wedding day. What I learned the most from this experience is--life is not a perfectly laid out pattern. Your journey is like a fingerprint. It’s your alone. Our journey as a couple is anything but traditional, but its special and I wouldn’t want it to be anything else than D & L & A & H & R Walsh.

THIS IS ME

My name is Leslie Walsh. I was Leslie Bourque until June 3rd, 2022, when I married my guy after 12 years. Ironically, I turned 50 just 3 days before our wedding.

For most of my life, if asked a hard question I typically answered “I don’t know.” One day I decided I actually did know and I haven’t stopped using my voice since.

I am a curious soul who is on a continuous mission to find all the right answers, but knows it is impossible. I am a kaleidoscope of emotions on a daily basis and this might be because I am a gemini or because I am a myriad of possibilities. I am a rainbow chaser, because where oh where does that pot of gold lie? I am a word buff--not really because I know fancy words, but because finding the perfect word is so much fun. I am a friend, because my life would be meaningless without my friends. I am a mom, because Amélie Belle and Hudson Scott chose me to be an influencer for them. I am a partner to a man who is indescribable and that is coming from a woman who loves words. This man is an actor you may recognize, Dylan Walsh. He calls himself a "journey man" and because of his job, our family is forever on an adventure. We have lived on every coast in the U.S.- California to New York back to California back to New York to Louisiana. We now live in a whole different country, Vancouver, Canada. Who knows where the next chapter will take us, but we are forever on a pursuit for our next escapade.

When I asked my guy to describe me in 3 words he said “feisty, warm and some word for friendly that’s better than friendly.” I am just a lady trying to navigate this thing called life and I hope to share stories that will make you think, make you feel and ultimately make you laugh.

We want to tell you a bit about her and welcome her to our food network of friends so we asked her a few questions and this is her response: . “I’ve enjoyed cooking for as long as I can remember and am eternally grateful to my parents who let me and my siblings experiment in the kitchen — as long as we cleaned up. It’s a gift to be able to rummage through fridge and cupboards and come up with a meal. Way before mystery boxes and secret ingredients, grocery exile, or simply a busy life taught me to make the most of what’s available. I grew up in Norway, spent time in France, and now live in Vancouver, Canada with my three boys — 16, 20 + hubby — and a very cuddly cat. They like eating my various experiments and often have suggestions for improvement. They also make great sous chefs, dishwashers, and obviously critics.
