KBF The Ten @ Bienville Plantation

“Because in life, there are places that we must go and share together. The things in life that are most important to us.” I read this on a promotional video highlighting Bienville Plantation’s trophy bass fishery. As, I sit back a day or two removed from experiencing this fishery first hand at the Kayak Bass Fishing (KBF) “The Ten”, I now have a profound understanding of what exactly the quote was referring to.

I was fortunate enough to be atop of the best 10 anglers in the Angler of The Year standings for the 2016 KBF tournament series. The 10 of these anglers received invitations to fish a no entry fee, all expenses paid tournament on the incredible Bienville Plantation property on January 27th & 28th. The winner of this event would walk away with a $10,000 purse!

Leading up to this event, I had daydreams about what all I could do with the $10,000 that I knew I was going to win. I was frantically preparing my tackle to go down to Florida to flip and punch heavy matted hydrilla and milfoil grass beds. I was learning new knots, organizing soft plastic baits, weights, hooks, pegs, line, rods and reels. I studied lake maps and Google Earth for hours. I rigged up my new Hobie Pro Angler 14 with all the gear it could hold. Then the day finally came for me to hit the road, leaving behind a frosty January in Kentucky as well as a girlfriend that was very jealous of all the sun and warmth I was about to enjoy.

Upon arriving, I was greeted with beautiful weather and the bassiest water I have ever seen. I made my way to our lodging, reserved for “The Ten” anglers. Can you imagine 10 guys all staying under the same roof preparing to fish against each other for $10,000?! The amenities provided at Bienville Plantation are incredible, we all stayed in a 5 bedroom 5 bath cabin that slept 10 very comfortably. The first full day was reserved for navigation; we were allowed to pedal/paddle around the two lakes reserved for us, Purvis and Thomas; however, we were not allowed to cast a line. After the navigation day, I was chomping at the bit to get out there and actually fish. I saw HUGE females milling around already prepared nests with big males ready to eat anything that got close. My Lowrance Elite-7 Ti graph stayed completely full of big fish arcs and bait balls all over the lake. I knew that this event could be won sight fishing beds or even from staging females hanging out deep.

The evening before the tournament was spent with “The Ten” anglers all making their final preparations for one of the biggest competitions any of us have ever been a part. I soon realized what great individuals we have in our sport of kayak bass fishing. We all shared some insights of what we thought about the waters and cut up with each other a bit, including a little friendly trash talk throughout the evening. I could see myself just meeting up with any one of these guys and just going fishing together as friends, but here we all are trying to beat each other for $10k, any other group of guys would cut throats to get at that prize purse; not with this group!

Day 1 started in the dark, lines in at 7:00am. I pedaled my Hobie Pro Angler 14 into the darkness with only Supernova Fishing Lights to show me the way. It did not take long until I found some shallow reeds and saw several good-sized swirls that told me there were aggressive bass close by. I made a few cast with a small finesse worm and soon hooked up on a little buck bass that jumped his way off the hook. Since the Hobie is so stable, I stood up to get better leverage on my hooksets and good thing I did. The very next cast my worm got thumped and started taking off to deeper water, I took up the slack and buried the hook into a fat 20.50” largemouth. I got the fish on the Hawg Trough measuring board and snapped the picture all ready to submit to Tourney-X to be judged. The very next cast a little further down the bank of grass; my worm got slammed again by another monster fish, measuring at 20.25”. I worked the area a little more and caught a few smaller males in the 15-16” range. About 20 minutes after landing that last big fish, the zoom worm decided to move off to deeper water all by itself, I didn’t feel the bite but knew one had it. I rammed the Gamakatsu hook as hard as I could, immediately a giant bass went ballistic on top of the water and pulled drag and my Hobie all over the bay I was in, and after a lengthy battle, I finally landed the mean 20” fish. I continued fishing down a bank with very few bites and nothing but small males. I decided to cover some water in search of some active fish. Picked up a Picasso Lures Shock Blade and it didn’t take long for it to be mauled by a healthy 19.75” bass. So, here I am with 4 good bass on the board for 80.5” and I’m thinking, If I can just get one more good bass I’ll have the best 5 fish total I’ve ever had and might actually have a shot at winning this thing. The day soon wore on and that final piece to the puzzle was seemingly out of reach, I just could not find another kicker. About 2:00, I went back to the area where I caught my bigger fish in the morning and picked that worm back up. First cast, immediately got pounded by a 6+ pound largemouth and the fight was on. I seriously thought that fish was going to break my line, my rod or my arm! We battled each other for a very long time, I finally got it to my R-S Nets USA landing net and knew I had “The One” she measured 21.50” and was well north of 6 pounds.

That fished pushed me to a Day 1 total of 101.75”, the largest 5 bass (total inches) in KBF history. I knew I had a good five fish limit but Mr. Ron Champion was right on my heels with 100.75”.

That evening we all had dinner together at the Bienville Plantation restaurant with great meals provided by Chef Rose Morgan. Chad Hoover of KBF had us doing media updates through Facebook Live all evening long, while in the back of our minds we were all thinking about tomorrow and that $10,000!

The cabin was a little quieter that night, as everyone stayed focused on what he would have to do the next day to bring home the victory.

Day 2 rolled in with a dramatic Florida cold front and that warm Florida sunshine was but a distant memory. I put my Columbia beanie and fleece on and prepared to hit the foggy waters of Lake Purvis once again. The big females that were once up shallow were nowhere to be found, at least for me. I was only able to catch smaller male bass in the 16” range, of which I must have caught 2 dozen. While I was struggling to put together a decent limit Cory Dryer and Ron Champion were going toe to toe trying to win the first ever “The Ten”. Of course, when you get those two, who are two of the best kayak bass anglers on the planet; what happens? A tie.

T hese guys put up awesome numbers and after two days and ten bass, they both had scored 195”, with the tiebreaker of big fish going to Cory Dryer with a 23.50” freak of a largemouth! That one fish turned out to be worth $10,000!

Once the dust settled the final standings of the first ever “The Ten” was as follows:

3. Jamie Dension (NC) - 190.75”

4. Jason Broach (FL) – 188.5”

5. AJ McWhorter (KY) - 187”

6. Jay Wallen (KY) - 184.25”

7. Clint Henderson (GA) – 176”

8. Joshua Stewart (TN) – 169.75”

9. Jody Queen (VA) – 142.5”

10. Mel Ashe (MO) – 87.5”

*Note that there were 6 anglers competing out of Hobie’s and they finished 1st thru 6th!

What I soon realized is that this event was not about winning $10,000. This event was about going to certain places that we must, and share them together and the most important things in life are the relationships you build with each other. These “Ten” will always share a bond from our time at Bienville Plantation and I personally consider Cory, Ron, Jamie, Jason, AJ, Clint, Joshua, Jody and Mel all brothers from this point forth.

VFW Post 637 Holds 76th Annual Awards Banquet

The Jacob J. Pearson VFW Post 637 held its 76th Annual Awards & Anniversary Banquet Saturday night at the Lodge in Hopewell.

This was the second year the banquet was held in an expanded format, as honorees from Prince George County were included among those being honored and recognized.

A large crowd was on hand including Prince George Supervisors Donald Hunter, Floyd Brown and T.J. Webb, along with members of County Staff.

Prince George Firefighter Jim Innis, a longtime volunteer, and Prince George Police Officer Kelly Borshch were recognized.

Also honored was Tonya Humphrey of JEJ Moore Middle School as Teacher of the Year. Darlene Stevens, a Prince George resident, was also recognized as Teacher of of the Year at Patrick Copeland Elementary School in Hopewell.

Other categories of recognition included the Soldier of the Year, Small Business of the Year, Auxiliary Member of the Year and Commander’s Award for Volunteer Service.

A tearful tribute was also held to honor soliders missing in action and in or have been in enemy prison camps. This was done by placing a service cap at the place setting of an empty table from each service organization.

Congratulations to VFW Post Commander Dennis Kennedy on pulling together a great event and for paying tribute to first responders and military personnel

Tying up some loose ends:

Congratulations to the Prince George High School Football Team on a great season! Despite being knocked out of the playoffs last Friday by Deep Run, the team had its first winning season since 1998 and first playoff appearance since 1994. A corps of players return next year so expectations will be even higher for Bruce Carroll’s squad.

Small Business Saturday is right around the corner (November 30). Prince George residents are encouraged to shop at the many small businesses located throughout the County as you go about your Christmas shopping.

A new director has been hired by the Appomattox River & South Central Wastewater authorities and the announcement will be forthcoming this week. It will be a familiar face and one that brings experience and familiarity to the challenges ahead for both authorities.

Kudos to the employees in the Human Services Building the last few work days who have weathered chilly conditions to serve the public. An aging boiler broke down last week and will be replaced in the coming days. But that did not stop employees from helping clients in between trying to find a warm room to stay warm. A big thank to General Services Director Mike Purvis for find small space heaters to safely provide temporary heat.

Herbert Goodie - resident of Purvis Lodge - is not living up to his name. He's been spotted around town, stealing newspapers right from other Sims' doorsteps!

There's also been a worrying increase in the number of wolf sightings, with the animals brazenly appearing even in daylight hours, right in the heart of urban Sanditon!

Contrary to official recommendations, it looks like some Sims might be actively encouraging their presence. Respected consultant neurologist Henry Tilney in particular, seems to be developing a keen interest in wolf husbandry in his spare time.

Alien activity is also on the increase again, with the latest abductee being Mary, veteran scientist and reclusive widow of George Knightley.

Far from being traumatised by her out-of-this-world encounter, Mary is said to have found her adventure highly stimulating!

Shortly after Mary's return from her outer space travels, it was sadly time to part with her faithful feline companion Orlando.

And old 'friend' Edmund Bertram had the bad luck to be struck by lightning - during a freak thunderstorm* - when he dropped round to compare notes with Mary on her alien visitation, having more than once been subjected to a similar experience himself. Thankfully, he was only lightly scorched. *Mary reports that she will shortly be embarking on a new research project, investigating the meteorological impact of alien incursions.

"Visited Venus, Too: 'Man of Mars' Guilty Of Attack on Woman," Vancouver Sun. October 7, 1943. Page 1. --- Vancouver's "man from Mars," Frederick Hathaway, came to earth with a thud Wednesday night when he heard a jury of nine men and three women convict him of indecent assault.

The 43-year-old lecturer, who calls himself doctor of philosophy and cosmic science by virtue of a correspondence degree from the "University of Lahore" in India and terms himself "Jair III," was remanded by Chief Justice Wendell Farris for sentence at the end of the Assizes.

From the witness box, Hathaway told of visits to other planets - spiritually, of course.

On Venus he said he saw barkless trees 1000 feet high and as thick as Granville Street. The people there are about two feet high, pleasant, very friendly but he could not understand their language.

He claimed to have been to Saturn and Neptune, too, and that anyone can travel to another planet if they go about it seriously in meditation and prayer.

He denied vehemently that he told Mrs. Lillian Purvis, 2446 West Fourth, that she should have intimate relations with him in order to get to another plane; that they could go there together but that she could not go alone.

He said he took Mrs. Purvis to be an honest seeker after truth and enlightenment and she aroused no feeling of affection in him.

Before the encounter was over, however, he suspected that she was an investigator.

HOROSCOPE WENT BLOOEY Mrs. Purvis had testified earlier in the trial that Hathaway invited her to remain after the second lecture she attended April 14 in his Aryan Astrological Occult Church of Christ, 2700 block Oak, and that he attempted to force attentions on her which he claimed would advance her in cosmic science.

She said she managed to break away, telling him it was a beastly thing to do under the guise of religion, and left with Hathaway apologizing and begging her to come to another lecture.

Rae and Detective William Harrington, the accused admitted asking Mrs. Purvis to stay and he would read her horoscope but that "in the middle of the scene she changed her mind and ran out of the hall, calling him names," that he apologized and wanted to drive her home.

"That's all, Doctor Hathaway," replied Mr. Donaghy.

The Chief Justice then asked the accused what kind of a doctor he was and Hathaway said philosophy and cosmic science, producing what he said was a degree obtained by correspondence from the University of Lahore in India.

"I did not pay anything for it. Just like a lawyer getting a KC," he explained.

"WONDERFUL WORLD" "Wonderful world, isn't it," remarked the prosecutor and the accused agreed that it is.

Miss Sarah Mary Ann Springer held the Bible between her two hands as she took the oath and swore that the accused was a Godly man and had never mentioned sex during the four years she had attended his classes.

Three other AAOCC followers were called as character witnesses by G. V. Pelton, at whose request the trial was open to the public.

"It takes courage for a woman to report to the authorities that she has been attacked by a man," Mr. Donaghy told the jury as he reviewed the evidence of Mrs. Purvis.

The jury retired at 7:20 p.m., after a 55-minute charge by the Chief Justice, and they returned at 9:30 with a verdict of guilty, less than five minutes after they had read to them the evidence of Detective Harrington.

Nirav Modi: PNB fraud: ED eyes Rs 4,000 crore foreign assets of Nirav Modi for attachment under PMLA

NEW DELHI: Widening its probe, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has zeroed in on foreign assets worth about Rs 4,000 crore of absconding diamond jeweller Nirav Modi for quick attachment under the anti-money laundering law in connection with the alleged $2 billion PNB fraud case. Officials said the agency has got issued a number of judicial requests (Letters Rogatories), and with a few being in the pipeline, from a local court in Mumbai to be sent to countries like the US, UK, Switzerland, Hong Kong and Singapore for attachment of immovable properties likes houses and villas and bank accounts of Nirav Modi and his family.

The agency, they said, had deployed a special team of officers to find out these assets located in the foreign shores and after getting official inputs, it has now begun the action to attach them under the criminal provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) soon, with help from foreign authorities.

The estimated value of these about two dozen assets is approximately Rs 4,000 crore, they said.

The central probe agency, in the past, has attached assets in Australia and the United States of America (USA) as part of its PMLA probe in other cases related to frauds.

The identified foreign assets are in the name of Nirav Modi, his family members and in some cases in the name of firms that the agency has called “bogus or dummy”.

It is understood that some showrooms of the diamond jeweller in these countries are under the ED radar which will soon face attachment action.

Nirav Modi has been absconding since the alleged bank fraud, by far the highest in the country in terms of value, came to light early this year and an Interpol arrest warrant was recently notified against him even as India is working to get him extradited from the United Kingdom, where he was last reported to have been based.

The agency has attached assets worth Rs 700 crore of Nirav Modi and his family in the country till now.

It has also filed a charge sheet against him alleging that he laundered and diverted over Rs 6,400 crore of bank funds abroad to dummy companies that were under his and his families’ control.

A total of 24 accused were listed in the charge sheet, filed under section 45 of the PMLA, including Nirav Modi, his father Deepak Modi, brother Neeshal Modi, sister Purvi Modi, brother-in-law Maiank Mehta and the designer jewellers’ firms–Ms Solar Exports, Stellar Diamonds and Diamonds R Us.

“These firms and Nirav Modi’s Firestar group of companies had fraudulently obtained Rs 6,498 crore through Letters of Undertaking (LoUs) issued by the Punjab National Bank, Brady House branch in Mumbai,” the central probe agency had said in a statement.

The funds so obtained, it said, by the three firms were “partly utilised for payment to various overseas companies and also for offsetting earlier LOUs”.

“It was revealed during investigation that the payments were made to 17 overseas entities in Hong Kong, Dubai and the USA since 2011 in the guise of export and import,” the agency said in its charge sheet.

The ED had registered an FIR, called the Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR), in this instance on February 14.

The CBI had also filed two charge sheets in this case early this month, one against Nirav Modi and the other against his uncle who is absconding in the same case — Mehul Choksi.

Nirav Modi and others are being probed under various criminal laws after the fraud came to light this year following a complaint by the Punjab National Bank (PNB) that they allegedly cheated the nationalised bank to the tune of over Rs 13,000 crore, with the purported involvement of a few employees of the bank.

Both Nirav Modi and Choksi are said to have left the country before criminal cases were lodged against them.

Choksi is reported to have recently taken the citizenship of Antigua, a caribbean nation, and India has begun extradition proceedings against him too.

PNB fraud: ED to seek immediate confiscation of Nirav Modi's 70-bn assets

The ED is set to move a special court in Mumbai to seek permission for “immediate confiscation” of about Rs 70 billion assets of designer diamond jeweller Nirav Modi under the recently promulgated Fugitive Economic Offenders Ordinance.

The agency, empowered by the Union government to enact the new power in the country, will seek an official declaration to categorise Nirav Modi as a “fugitive” based on its prosecution complaint (charge sheet) filed before a special court in Mumbai last week under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

On May 24, the ED had filed its first charge sheet in the over USD 2 billion PNB fraud case involving diamantaire Nirav Modi and his associates stating that over Rs 64 billion of bank funds were allegedly laundered abroad to dummy companies by him and others.

A total of 24 accused have been listed in the charge sheet, filed under section 45 of the PMLA, including Nirav Modi, his father, brother Neeshal Modi, sister Purvi Modi, brother-in-law Mayank Mehta and the designer jewellers’ firms — Ms Solar Exports, Stellar Diamonds and Diamonds R Us.

The court is expected to take cognisance of the 12,000 page charge sheet tomorrow and the counsel for the agency will subsequently seek its permission to invoke the provisions of the Fugitive Economic Offenders Ordinance against Modi and immediately begin the procedure to confiscate all the assets “of and linked to” Modi in India and abroad, a senior official told PTI.

A court-issued non-bailable warrant is already pending against Modi and the ED has also moved the Interpol to get a global arrest warrant issued against him, sometime back.

The agency will initiate the same action against absconding liquor baron Vijay Mallya, against whom the Enforcement Directorate and the CBI had filed their respective charge sheets last year.

It is expected, the official said, that assets worth Rs 70 billion can be confiscated in the money laundering and the Punjab National Bank fraud corruption case against Nirav Modi, under the stringent fugitive offenders ordinance.

The central probe agency had recently begun the work to bring together the existing cases of high-value fugitives and bank loan defaulters for getting them notified under the new legislation.

As per the existing process of law under the PMLA, the ED could only confiscate the assets once the trial in a case finishes which usually takes a long time of many years.

The ordinance is aimed at deterring economic offenders from evading the process of law by remaining outside the jurisdiction of Indian courts.

The Modi government brought the ordinance last month as “there have been instances of economic offenders fleeing the jurisdiction of Indian courts, anticipating the commencement, or during the pendency, of criminal proceedings,” the government said.

The rationale behind the law, the government had said, was the absence of such offenders from Indian courts which hampers investigation and wastes court time and undermines the rule of law.

“The existing civil and criminal provisions in law are not entirely adequate to deal with the severity of the problem,” it had said.

The Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill, 2018 was introduced in the Lok Sabha on March 12 but couldnt be taken up due to logjam in Parliament over different issues.

With Parliament being adjourned sine die, an ordinance was proposed.

The Union Cabinet on April 21 approved the ordinance and the President gave his assent to promulgation of the same a day later.

The ordinance makes provisions for special courts under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 to declare a person as a fugitive economic offender.

“A Fugitive Economic Offender is a person against whom an arrest warrant has been issued in respect of a scheduled offence and who has left India so as to avoid criminal prosecution, or being abroad, refuses to return to India to face criminal prosecution,” the government statement said.

However, only cases of frauds, cheque dishonour or loan default of over Rs 200 crore would come under this ordinance.

The ordinance provides for necessary constitutional safeguards in terms of providing hearing to the person through counsel, allowing him time to file a reply, serving notice of summons to him, whether in India or abroad and appeal before the high court.

The government had said the new law would help banks and other financial institutions to achieve higher recovery from financial defaults committed by fugitive economic offenders, improving the financial health of such institutions.

The ED would take the same action of notification under the fugitive offenders ordinance after filing a second charge sheet against Modi’s uncle and jeweller Mehul Choksi and his businesses, who are also accused in this case.

Nirav Modi, who is absconding and has not joined the ED probe in the case till now, and others are being probed under various criminal laws after the fraud came to light this year following a complaint by the Punjab National Bank that they allegedly cheated the nationalised bank to the tune of over Rs 13,000 crore, with the purported involvement of a few employees of the bank.

Both Nirav Modi and Choksi are said to have left the country before criminal cases were lodged against them.
