March 10th, 2023 marked the first day of the new R211A cars in service. These cars are currently undergoing a 30-day passenger test period on the A line. If all goes well, more of these cars will come in and retire the older R46 cars, which are primarily seen on the A, C, N, Q and W lines. The picture is actually a video still from my video at Howard Beach-JFK Airport Station. I'll get some actual pictures eventually. Far Rockaway bound R211A A train at Canal Street. It Is Such A Major Upgrade Over The R143/R160/R179 In Appearance Inside & Out! 👍👍 But Alot Can Happen in 18 Months. First Set Delivered For Testing April 2021 & All Goes Well September 2022 All Sets Start To Be Delivered? The R46s Are Aging And Their Breakdown Rate Is Getting Worse Plus Have To Hope They Hold Up Plus Hopefully No More Issues With The R179s. Anyway? When I typed out the title for this post, I really thought it would be the semi-finale for this little series since these were wrapping up their testing phases. But with recent news on the issues I’ve heard they had, guess we not done yet 😅. . The brand new 5-car consist of Kawasaki R211As sits on one of the lines at Coney Island Yard, awaiting to return to Pitkin Yard after running several tests and trials over the past few days along the lines that spew out of the aforementioned yard. Speaking of that, wondering how I was able to get this shot specifically? Easy: we’re onboard a Coney Island-bound (N), consisting of Pullman-Standard R46 cars, which ironically is what the R211s are meant to replace (about the umpteenth time I’ve emphasized that fact.) If you notice it well enough, the taillight of an R68 can be seen behind the new-tech train. . With the recent issues that I’ve heard this train had while in the testing phase as I mentioned before, as well as the planned date for these to enter revenue service drawing nearer and nearer, the future for these trains are uncertain from my knowledge. The pilot set of Kawasaki R211As #4060-4069 is seen cruising down the express track along the (A) line, preparing to coast by the Rockaway Blvd Station, where the Lefferts-bound trains and Rockaways-bound trains split off from each other. Since it’s about half-way through it’s normal testing route, it’ll switch onto the Rockaways Branch, and then go towards Broad Channel, where it’ll go onto the relay tracks that sit outside the station. Behind the gates surrounding the IND/BMT Coney Island Facility, lyes a Kawasaki R211A consist, signed up as the (D), bound for Bay 50th Street on the IND West End Line, which in actuality, is the (D)‘s temporary terminal for the time being, due to flood protection work between there and Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue, awaiting for any last touch-ups it needs before it starts testing.
