Questioner: Do dragons in the cosmere have their own magic system? And if so, what can you tell us about it?

Brandon Sanderson: You'll get some answers to this very soon because you'll be able to read Dragonsteel Prime. (And some of you have read that. We'll be doing this as a Curiosity, like we did Way of Kings Prime).

Dragons act in the cosmere as kind of this... the Primary magic system that they use is something akin to soothing and rioting, but they have followers who pray to them and ask for them to help them with their emotions during difficult times, and the dragons are able to do that across any distance.

That's kind of the main thing that they're doing, other than that they can transform between a dragon and a person in shape. There's a little bit more to it, but I'll give you those nuggets.

If you’ve read The Way Of Kings Prime, you’ll know that Kaladin used to be called Merin.  But in the very first draft of that book he was also named Jared.  Aredor-- the character who became Adolin-- was named Jared, too.  Jasnah was Jared.  Elhokar was Jared.  Taln was Jared.  Renarin was Li’l Jared.  Whole lotta Jareds in that book.

I was not planning on reading DragonSteel prime, but then Sanderson released the Ebook and audiobook for free, and I can't pass up another Kramer and Reading Sanderson experience. I've only finished chapter 4 but that's about 3 hours of listening and it's pretty good. Really feels like wheel of time book 1 but without everything I hated. I am very surprised by how much I'm enjoying it and if you really need some more Cosmere, it's hard to pass up this free opportunity, even if it isn't really cannon. I also think it will be cool to see what cannon changes by the time the published version comes out like 15 years from now.

If you plan on using your phone to download it make sure you have a zip extractor (app store), it's nor gonna be as smooth as an audiobook experience, though I think you can open the file through some audiobook services. With a little effort though you have a totally free, excellently read audio or ebook. Would recommend.

Something that reading Dragonsteel Prime and Way of Kings Prime showed me, is that Brandon's primary shortcoming as an author is his pacing. Don't get me wrong, some of his books are beautifully paced(Words of Radiance, The Final Empire, Emperor's Soul, etc.) But Elantris and cytonic "famously" have weird pacing. I also found Oathbringer, Rhythm of War, and Frugal Wizards Handbook to Surving Medieval England to have weird pacing(less bad then Elantris but still weird). Now, being able to read his earlier work I can tell this is a consistent shortcoming of his.

Reading Dragonsteel Prime has me thinking about how well written Kaladin is.

When he tries to save his men by using the bridge as a shield and in doing so he gets just about all the other bridgemen killed while losing the battle for the army. Like, that is such a hard loss. It reveals him to not have the big picture in mind even though his desire is good. He doesn't get how he and his men fit into the bigger schemes of the war and that blindness gets men killed.

Like he is a true hero, but also a human who doesn't always know the best move to make.

I just think it's so much fun to read.

In the fantasy epics I read there is usually a character I picture as Arthur from Merlin.

In Stormlight it's Adolin.

In Kingfall it's Osric.

They just have sassy king vibes.

There was one in Dragonsteel Prime too but I can't think of his name. Wasn't as good of a fit.
