              “DON’T SAY THAT.”  voice was barely a whisper, a painful ache that slipped from her lips as she spoke.  the memory that flickered within her mind with the words was painful, the sort of one she wished she could literally scrub out of her brain.  xayah felt as though a SPLINTER lodged itself in her heart, and suddenly breathing had become a challenge.  don’t say that.  her statement thudded on repeat in her head, begging herself to stay focused.  to not fall apart as her body felt the straining w i s h to do in that moment.  she didn’t deserve his approval like this.  she never would.

           grimace would overtake her lips, twisting them downward, enticing her eyes to flutter half closed.  agony, embarrassment.  arms folded before her, half wrapping around her form, grateful there was no one else around to see the way she tucked into herself.  being strong, being tough, being angry... it was growing old.  familiar but old.  limbs were heavy, there was no way to lighten the burden without getting the weight from her chest off.  doing so would require a s h a t t e r i n g.  tearing down a wall she hadn’t in some time.  not since he had last been in her arms and the two of them had been... good.

                      while the monster side of her - the darkness... while it had loved him, it had rarely relented to its agony.  rarely revealed her true suffering to the one she loved most.

        xayah could only accept she had been terrible.  maybe she still was.  it was still her in some ways.  but... how she yearned to think she was more.  maybe a hero once again.  someone who fought for GOOD.  for love... even if she refused to admit it.  her stubborn pride, her need to be strong.  her fear of losing anyone again.

                    “fighting against zoe wasn’t something you should have been proud of, you know.  i shouldn’t have been so... deep.  so lost and dark and evil.  i was... weak.  that’s the long and the short of it.  i was manipulated way too easily.  fuck, i was a pawn the whole damn time.  i was a battery for the chaos queen.  being able to fight against her should have been the bare minimum of decency.  and i couldn’t even do it until it nearly cost the entire world.”

      disappointment, frustration, deep and unsettled hurt.  the female lhotlan sighed to the point her entire form sunk into a chair behind her, grateful it was there to keep her from collapsing to the ground.  her knees had begun to TREMBLE.  like a child fearful of being lost.  stupid.

                       “saving you, being a hero again, all of this...  this is what a good person would have done regardless.  it’s sad that you have to be proud of me for actually acting like a star guardian.  not...”  a roll of the eyes.  a huff.  bangs still tickled right back in her face.  “not a bitch... that personality should have stayed at s c h o o l, not joined the battlefield.  i’m ridiculous, huh?”

     She wasn’t always a solo act. Coming from a world overtaken by chaos monsters, Senna was rescued from the wreckage of everything she’d ever known by an older outer guardian, which was also when she took her oath. Despite relying on her senior guardian for guidance, she tried her best to keep people at arms’ length; what’s the use of getting close to people when you know you’ll lose them eventually anyway?

     It proved to be more than true when her mentor was killed by monsters on their way back to his home planet. Senna finished the journey, joining up with the team that her mentor had meant for her to be a part of—and informing them of his death. This was where she met her first team; Kalista, Vex, and of course, Lucian—the one man who would end up stubborn enough to breach her long-fortified walls and find his way to her heart, leaving the way open for others to make themselves family and friends to her.

     “ The more they served together, the deeper their bond became, and Senna realized that the value of her walls wasn’t what she kept out, but who she let in “ -- Senna bio.

     They served their duty for nearly a century, when a sadistic and powerful enemy of the guardians, a servant of Chaos named Thresh, managed to capture her, dragging her through a portal and away from her team. Trapped in his prison realm, Senna fought of monsters for as long as she could. Her resolve was always strong, and she was tough, and determined not to fall. She searched for a way out, and she met the other long-since-gone guardians whom the creature had trapped over many years.

     On the edge of her limit, wondering if she’d ever find a way out, her friends came for her—they destroyed the lantern, and, drawing on the light given to her by the other trapped souls within that terrible place, she escaped into the arms of her teammates, greeted with joy and in victory. (And Vex’s tentative, ‘yeah, okay, i guess it’s cool that worked.’)

     In many stories, that would have been the end of things. Unfortunately, Senna’s team had a long way to go still; and would eventually come face to face with the terrible truth of their profession. 

     After a betrayal from someone they’d once saved, Kalista, who had been their team leader and driving force, died, and was brought back to fight against them alongside an old nemesis from a ruined world. Not long after, Vex decided that being the good guy was ‘too much trouble,’ and went the same way. She lost Lucian in the final confrontation with her former friends, and was the only one who walked out of it still standing. Her experience in the lantern realm had helped her do that much—but she knew the price they paid, now, and there was no going back.

     Since then, she’d mostly spent her time as a solo act. If you never get close to anyone, you can’t lose them, after all—until now, as she joins up with Xayah’s new team to try and save Rakan. Maybe it’s foolishness, and maybe trying this team thing again is an effort that will only end in the same sort of misery... but if it’s possible, she has to try.
