MATA??? This did not happen the last time I played! 😱
Okay, so the jag did pounce my sim this time and it gave both me and especially poor Remus a good ol’ scare. xD I legit thought he was done for, but as it turned out, Mata was just giving him a fair warning. I’m not sure what exactly triggers the attack but I have a theory which I’ll put under the cut because potential spoiler.
I think Mata will only pounce if the playable sim goes straight for the totem pole and not if he approaches slowly (through several ‘go here’ commands). I can’t guarantee (it has been 4 years after all), but I’m pretty sure I had my sim sneak around during that first playthrough, which is why Mata didn’t bother attacking him back then.

Oh, and also… guess who decided to reinstall Castaway Stories? :D Yep, I’m back on my bullshit again (four years later!) and Remus is my unwilling victim… again. He doesn’t seem too thrilled about it! xD
I’m hoping to be able to post the rest of the guided gameplay chapters this time around (last time my Fraps folder went kaboom, to my great dismay), but until I get to that point I’ll only be posting sporadic CS screenshots without much rhyme or reason.
For those of you who’d like to follow along on my Castaway journey, now might be a good idea to re-read my previous Castaway playthrough, because I plan to pick up with more regular photosets after Chapter 15, and hopefully see this story through. For real, this time.

And speaking of locations, here’s an odd little Fun Fact about the swamp which I only discovered yesterday!
It would appear that swamp water is coded in a different way from any other body of water in The Sims 2: while it doesn’t give you an option to fish nor swim in it, sims can still ‘walk’ through it (and will even change into swimwear for this!), but will get a pretty significant Hygiene hit in doing so.
Ngl, I’m pretty impressed by the small details present in Castaway (and now I really wish we could have swamps in regular Sims 2...)

👑 All hail King Remus! 👑
Nah, kidding, but ofc Remus couldn’t pass up the chance to chill on the Chief’s old throne for a bit. Too bad his phone sank with the cruiser, these would’ve been a hit on Simstagram!
(Had to post these pics individually because I love how they came out! The lighting coming off of those giant face lamps is hella cool.)

The festivities were already in full swing by the time Remus got to the Hullaba Luau grounds. “This tribe sure knows how to party!” he thought, the festive cheer already rubbing off on him. It felt like the Volcano Festival all over again, with him as the honored guest. And to make the parallels even more evident, Orama was there, too! This party just kept getting better and better.
The two lovebirds greeted each other with a romantic hug and Remus figured that a kiss would be the logical next step. The natives seemed pretty open about kissing on the mouth, so he saw no harm in stealing a little peck from Orama. But as he leaned closer, the young woman recoiled timidly, much to Remus’ dismay. Did he misinterpret the island’s customs? Was this considered too forward? What’s Orama going to think of him? He kicked himself mentally, cursing at the idea of having unintentionally offended her.
Orama turned away and walked over to a gigantic stone cauldron. She motioned for Remus to approach (“Does this mean she’s not offended?” - he though hopefully), and, raising a challenging eyebrow, pointed at the molten hot liquid bubbling inside. “So, now you are a hero, but can you drink the volcano water?”
Remus saw this as his chance at redemption. He’d do anything to get back on Orama’s good side, even if that “anything” was drinking volcanic lava. Putting on a cocky grin, he downed a full ladle of the hot beverage while Orama did the same beside him.
The liquid was scorching Remus’ mouth, threatening to cook him from the inside out, but he resisted the urge to spit it out. So far he’d survived a shipwreck, a mysterious tropical disease, hyenas, jaguars, and ghosts - and a hot drink is where he’d fail? No way!
Still, he was relieved when they moved on to the limbo pole. Volcanic water is nice and all, but keeping all your taste buds is even nicer.

Travel to the cursed forbidden village – check.
Remus was entering the abandoned huts one by one, searching them and opening any basket he could find - so far, to no avail. Sneaking around the eerily silent village, he was suddenly overcome with a strange sense of loss. It only just dawned on him how many villagers must have lost their lives here, and the place filled him with a deep sadness. “I can’t imagine how the tribe must feel” - he reminisced.
At dusk, the ghosts started appearing. “Death awaits us all – but he follows you” - a barely audible woman’s voice came drifting from behind Remus, startling him. So the village was not only abandoned, but haunted too. Someone fainter of heart might have been compelled to run away screaming, but Remus was not one to be scared of spirits - if there was one thing his magical family taught him, it was not to fear the occult. But still, the lingering feeling of loss persisted.
“I have to do something to help these ghosts” - he decided.

Mata stood, mighty and spotted, exactly where she was supposed to stand - at the entrance of the forbidden village. Remus could feel the adrenaline surging through his body as he approached the motionless predator. “I need to calm myself down” - he reminded himself. “Cats can sense fear, and the very last thing I want is for Mata to see me as prey”.
He held out the Nepeta leaf and brought it down to the jaguar’s maw with what he’d hoped could pass off as a slow, steady motion. The animal’s bright eyes glistened, but not at the sight of the hand itself, no - it was what’s in the hand that interested her, Remus realized with relief.
She snatched the leaf from him, purring like a diesel engine as she chewed it. Then, out of the blue, as though remembering an important business meeting she had to attend, Mata shuffled past Remus and disappeared into the jungle. Just like that.
Tame jaguar guardian – check. 🐆

Sometimes, to help yourself you have to help others first. No sooner had Remus put down the last urn, than the ghost of the old man appeared again.
“I know what you seek. Return to the Chief’s basket, and look again.“
And sure enough… 🥁
Mission complete! Now to deliver the drum to the Chief.

Time to tell the good news to the Chief! An excerpt from Remus’ castaway journal:
It was back to my new gig as a drum delivery service. I got the drum. It was right where the Chief said it’d be (minus the ghosts).
This was the fun part. I made the Chief’s day, reuniting him with his drum. He’s so happy that he’s throwing the first luau since the curse to celebrate. I have never been one to miss a party!

Dancing the Limbo was actually quite fun. Not only did Remus not break any bones, but he even got it right on the first try! Even Orama seemed impressed with his athletic prowess.
There was, however, one last test he had to pass, and it had to do with fire. Again. “These people are covert pyromaniacs” Remus thought as he stood in front of the hot coal trail; Orama wanted him to walk across literal fire for her sake! Talk about getting raked over the coals!
The fiery chunks burned his bare feet with every painful step; he tried, really tried, but he wasn’t able to make it to the end of the trail. Nevertheless, his best effort was apparently good enough for Orama, who threw herself into his arms.
Encouraged by this sudden turn in her behavior and figuring the mood was right, Remus decided to make his move again.

He woke up the next morning feeling fully recharged. Between the comfort of the bamboo bed, the sound of the sea lulling him, and the big open windows providing just enough draft for the bedroom to be comfortably breezy, Remus couldn’t remember the last time he slept this well. ‘I never want to leave this bed’ - he thought to himself… but alas, he knew that was not an option. The Chief was already lurking outside, giving a silent yet firm reminder of the quest our hero was to undertake.
But surely, that could wait until after breakfast, right? Not even Chief Manave could deny the importance of a balanced meal. Sitting out on the terrace of his new home, eating the fruit salad he’d whipped together, it was tough to tell what Remus enjoyed more: the fresh fruit, or the breathtaking view? Yes, he was going to look for shamans and cursed drums in a moment; but right now, it was just him, his pineapple salad, and the endless blue sea, and he was at peace.

She didn’t recoil this time. Remus would later write in his journal that the kiss he shared with Orama was “life changing", and that he never wanted to kiss anyone else again. No doubt about it, he was in love - and he was getting in deep!
Amid all this excitement, he’d almost forgotten he was due a reward for finishing the drum quest. Chief Manave gave him the honorary title of “Friend of the Tribe”, and Huhana gave him something even better - a beautifully carved and decorated rudder for his raft! Now he’d finally be able to set sail and return home!
He made a mistake to say it out loud, though. The hurt on Orama’s face at the mention of “returning home” was gut-wrenchingly evident, and before Remus could say anything, she ran - physically ran away from him like a wounded gazelle. Remus kicked himself mentally, for the second time that day, for hurting Orama; their budding relationship was not off to a good start, and he really had to wonder at his own stupidity. He wasn’t a novice to the dating game by any means, and yet here he was, making all these rookie mistakes. What was up with that?
Ever the wise leaders, the Manaves tried to reassure Remus that Orama would forgive him after he has gone, and maybe even forget one day (“Yeah, thanks, not reassuring at all” - Remus thought bitterly), but before they had time to finish that merry conversation, the earth beneath them started to rumble and Chief Manave ordered everyone back into their huts.

Back at Creepy Hollow, Remus found the Shaman meditating like his life depended on it; he hated to interrupt, but it didn’t look like he had a choice. Shaman Tama couldn’t believe his eyes when Remus handed him the lost idol - there was something to this young foreigner after all! Perhaps he could even be trusted with the secrets of the old village.
But he’ll have to go past Mata the jaguar first. “Mata means “the eye”, for she is ever watchful. You cannot slip by her” - the old man was explaining. Remus was kind of hoping that there was a way to “slip past her” after all, but he wasn’t expecting it to be a goddamned herbal charm of all things. Rubbing Nepeta leaves on his palms to win the jaguar’s friendship? Sure, no problem, what could go wrong with that plan. Totally not him garnishing himself with jaguar parsley, nuh-uh.
Remus remembered from his biology classes at college that the Nepeta plant had an effect very similar to catnip, he just hoped that the one he’d picked from the Shaman’s private herbal garden would be strong enough to calm the jag down. Or put him in a coma, preferably. If it worked for the Shaman it’s going to work for him too, right? Right?? :’))
