January 30th, Havana to Santi Spiritus

Up for breakfast, Gracie did do a great job of providing a variety at breakfast. Hopped on our coach bus that will be our means of transportation for the next two weeks, Adrian is our driver. As we travel through the country side, Jackson fills us in on the history of Cuba, from the revolt against the Spanish , 1868, to more 20th century what happened after 1959 when the

Americans left. The mass exodus of Cubans to the US in the early 1980’s as well as 1994. There are presently 3 million Cubans living in countries other than Cuban, and many of these people send money back to their relatives in Cuba. Ever since Russia has removed their financial support of Cuba, both the government and people in Cuba rely on this financial support from relatives abroad. Presently local people welcome Euros, and Canadian dollars, they deposit it in banks and us a debit card tied to this account to purchase hard to get food and household goods. Families are given food stamp books that entitle them to 28 staple food items if they are available. That is why foreign currency is welcome because they can use it to supplement the food stamp foods. We have been given anywhere from 80 - 1.05 pesos equivalent for our Canadian dollars.

As we drive I noticed so many horses with Odense carts being driven by locals, some as taxis, others transporting palm leaves, bags of grain and fruit. Fencing for the fields consist of trees, I don’t know what kind, planted a foot apart and then a wire or two strung across.

Arrived in Santa Clara and stopped at Los Caneyes a hotel/restaurant that is very nature conscious and lots of birds, chickens and stray roofed buildings. Buffet lunch all you can eat. Cubans love meat, so Larry is in piggy heaven.

Bit of trivia… National tree, Royal Palm tree, national bird, Tokororo, white, red and blue and the national flower is the Butterfly lily.

Our fellow travellers are seasoned travels and been to everywhere we have been plus more places as well. The gentleman from Paris has been on more than 10 G Adventure tours. Interesting that every one of them is single.

Arrive in Sancti Spiritus and go tour our hotel a beautiful old Casa, actually more of a mansion that has been converted into a hotel, Hotel del Rijo.

Took a walk around the town, many beautiful old mansions and the town square is so clean and welcoming. Walked down to the River, Rio Yayabo it is chocked full off water hyacinths are far as the eye can see. Next on the the local church when we see a statue of the patron saint of Cuba, la Virgen de la Cardad. This blue church dates back to the 1700’s.

At 7:30 we meet for dinner and walk to a local restaurant and have spaghetti Cuban style and my limonada came with a fluorescent ice cube that changed colours. Meal total was < 1400 pesos and that included a 20% tip.

Off to bed, the room is beautiful, beds comfortable and it is quiet. A really pleasant night.

Moving on, again

Before I leave Copenhagen I visit the Museum of Danish Resistance dealing with the Nazi occupation of Denmark during World War II, and the National Gallery, which were both free and well worth checking out.

I wanted to check out some more of Denmark, the other principal island of the country and the part of the country that connects with Germany.

Looking to go to Odense, which isn’t far from Copenhagen I started trying to find a hostel.

The youth hostel in the city hadn’t opened their dorms yet, they were waiting until later in April.

The best they could offer was a twin room at 124 Euro.

So, that ruled out Odense.

I was also interested in going up to the top of the country, to Skagen. But trains were going to be expensive and more hostel problems were popping up.

In the end I decided to look to Germany.

I took a train to Hamburg, the Danes don’t do buses, there isn’t even a bus station in Copenhagen.

There is a bus but it’s not for another five hours and I want to get moving.

Besides I wouldn’t want to hang around Copenhagen’s central train station, it’s under-lit and there are loads of dodgy characters hanging around.

The ticket costs 399 Danish Krona.

As the train leaves the city is doesn’t go too fast, about the speed of the DART urban train in Dublin.

We go on to two islands off Zealand, which are connected by bridges.

We go through a wood which is carpeted in leaves.

Past a lone deer that seems so isolated it could be the only thing alive in the world.

Eventually we reach the waiting ferry at Rodby and we board the ferry, that is the train goes onboard.

The train drives on to the ferry.

We get off the train for the short crossing to Germany and go up about the ferry which has a shop and a couple of restaurants.

It’s at this point when I become aware of the fact that I’m going to Germany.

In the onboard shop this fact is brought forward to me forcibly.

The Germans know value.

I buy a bottle of Chardonnay by Trapiche of Mendoza in Argentina for 4.85 Euro.

The crossing is foggy, the day has been overcast ever since I left Copenhagen where the towers and spires of the city seemed to be up in the clouds.

When the train drives off on to German soil we have a change of train driver.

A particularly unnecessarily officious German Railways inspector checks our tickets.

He’s in sharp contrast to the full of joy Danish inspector who checked the same tickets earlier in Denmark.

The sun starts to shine as we approach Lubeck.

Hamburg train station is busy.

It’s a Saturday afternoon and there are people everywhere about the big station.

I make my way to the hostel, which is in a different part of the city.

I check in.

‘Take any free bed’, the receptionist tells me.

And that’s just what I do.

Only the bed isn’t free, well there was nothing on it.

But a gang of English guys who wake me up early next morning tell me that I’m in one of their beds.

They find another spare bed.

Then more of the gang comes back and they want to know why there are strangers in 'their’ room.

They’re obviously never heard of a hostel before.

I get dressed and walk to the famous Hamburg early morning Sunday Fish Market, which in reality isn’t much to do with fish.

The market starts at 05.00.

With the clocks having gone forward that morning it’s just about 05.30 by the time I get there.

Maybe it used to be to do with fish.

But these days you can buy anything there from souvenirs to clothes, hats to biscuits, food of all sorts and beer or course beer.

There are of course some people selling fish but just a few of them.

There’s even a band playing in a hall, maybe the old fish market?

Most of the people who are about at this time are after coming from night clubs.

Getting married in Denmark as a German Citizen, Resident or Visitor

We get many calls from couples who live in Germany or are staying/visiting in Germany (or a combination of both!), as getting married in Denmark is such a great, easy and stress free option for them. The paperwork is far less, there are no marital status documents required, no birth certificates, the marriage certificates are issued in German, the ceremony can be held in German and you can marry in as little as 2 weeks if you are flexible on venue. This venue looks at why Denmark is so appealing for German residents and citizens, and the possible venues if you are travelling to Denmark from Germany. It is well known that one of the easiest and fastest places in the world to marry for foreign, International and same sex couples is Denmark. And as Germany has stricter and wider document requirements, and much longer timeframes (can be up to 18 months to marry, longer if you are not both German Citizens), we are finding more and more German resident, citizens and visiting partners are looking to get married in Denmark as an alternative to the process in Germany.

Aarhus All of these Town Halls have good road access, bus, train, and also some of them have their own airports if you are arriving from Southern Germany. Depending on your timeframe, whether you have witnesses or need them provided, can do same day document presentation or are able to do business day before (or longer) there are options for everyone. The main stream Town Halls such as Tønder, Sonderborg and Aabenraa are always very full due to popularity and proximity, they are a great option if you are happy with a wedding further in advance and can be flexible with your dates. All absolutely stunning towns and locations, and we personally know the registrars there, they are very welcoming of German couples, most of the registrars speaking fluent German and having strong personal connections to Germany, they are very much in tune with the culture. Click on the individual venue names for expanded information on each venue. The other 11 Town halls all have something to offer that is unique and different, whilst still remaining charmingly Danish and majestic but managing to be also welcoming and warm. If you love Vikings then you may wish to consider a wedding in Ribe or Esbjerg as your venue, as this is the region that is home to the wonderful Viking museum and well worth a visit. Also a favourite for couples who wish to bring dogs to the wedding, as these venues are on the Wadden sea and you can visit the famous Mud flats whilst you are there. Ribe and Esbjerg are particular favourites of ours, all of the staff speak fluent German (and English), so you can truly have a German/Danish experience with breakfast in Germany, a fish lunch by the sea in Denmark and then your wedding dinner back in Germany, having a wedding in German language if you wish (or English!), and International Marriage certificates issued there and then by the registrar in German, English, Danish, Spanish and French.

If you are travelling with children you may wish to have a look at Kolding, it is boasted as being the friendliest Town in Denmark, has its very own Medieval castle, and also SlotssøBadet, which is an extraordinary waterpark that is suitable for all ages and well worth a visit.

Many of the venues are on the sea or close to the sea and have working and active busy fishing ports, so you will be sure of the freshest and best seafood, and you are not short of choices of restaurants for a celebration lunch or dinner. Many restaurants in and around the area speak fluent English and German. Admiralen is the top fish restaurant in the area. We could go on and on about the options you have if you are travelling from Germany to get married, but the best thing to do is to give us a call and we can quickly talk you through the locations and options. As depending on how quickly you wish to get married, which days of the week you have free, whether you are taking witnesses, and if you are driving or taking the train will all mean some venues are more of an option than others.

What documents do I need?

The great news is that you DO NOT NEED marital status certificates or birth certificates.

* Travel documents (passport or EU ID) (with 3 months validity from the date of the ceremony)

* Residence permits (if you are living in a country where it is required) or Visa for entry into Denmark.

* Relationship document (this is something that is made yourself and we will help you with it, just to evidence longevity and contact, it is super easy and super cute to put together!).

* Proof that you are living together if you are (absolutely no problem if you are not).

* If either of you have been previously married then Decree or Death certificates * If you have shared children together (both of your names on the birth certificate) we will need the birth certificates Everything is done on secured emails, or encrypted communication NOT stored on a public server or public emails (for example google), and you present the originals to the registrar before your wedding.

How do I start the process?

You contact us! Thats all!!

Once you have the documents in (as outlined above) we make the application to the Agency of Family Law in Denmark. This is the government office that approves all marriages that take place in Denmark. Usually we will receive the approval in 5 days and your 'file' will be sent electronically to the town hall that you have chosen, as soon as they have the file, we can arrange and confirm the ceremony date. We also organise the language you would like the ceremony in (English, Danish or German), the witnesses, any extra marriage certificates, anything additional Each town hall works in different ways some you can marry next day and some you can marry in 2 weeks, some in 2 months - but don't worry about that, it's up to us to explain all of that to you.

You will marry in the town hall that you have chosen and you will receive 2 copies of the International Marriage Certificate on the day of the ceremony - which is in English, German, Danish, Spanish and French - and you are free to leave immediately!

How quickly can we marry? Generally if you are flexible on the venue we can marry you in as little as 10 days from when the application is submitted, anywhere up to 4 months in advance for more in demand venues such as Tønder. Do all German offices accept the Danish International Marriage Certificate? Yes. Every single Standesmat, Auslanderbehorde, Burgeramt in Germany is used to seeing the International Marriage certificate and they do not need translation as they are already in German. We have German Government offices and Immigration solicitors actually refer couples to us as an alternative to marrying anywhere else. Although the marriage certificates are Legally recognised worldwide, some German offices will require the International Marriage Certificate to be Legalised with an Apostille (it looks like THIS) from Denmark (you know what German offices are like!). We can help you with this, it is our Legalisation service, and covers the Legalisation of your certificate from the Danish Government office and the courier of the Legalised Certificate back to you. If you would like the service we can order you extra International Marriage certificates FREE OF CHARGE, whilst yours are being Legalised, although rest assured we generally have them Legalised and back to you within 5-7 days of receiving them into our office. We can organise you a scan of the Legalised document before it is couriered out also if you wish.

Scandinavian Tour, Part 1: Trying Something New

We love to travel, but planning a trip can be really labor- and time-intensive. Bob has great ideas for places to go and things to do, but no patience for all those logistical details, so the work falls on my shoulders. Sometimes, when I have been poring over AirBnBs and hotel options, comparing flight prices, and looking at rental cars vs. trains, I find myself feeling overwhelmed by all the choices and resentful that it’s keeping me from enjoying the place I am actually in. I have often thought how nice it would be to let someone else do the planning for once! So Bob and I decided to try an organized tour for the first time and see if we liked it.

We knew we wanted to travel in the fall, at the end of our time in Vermont, and before settling into our new home in Puerto Rico. We knew we had to work around our oldest child Aryk’s schedule, because they were just finishing their work for their Master’s degree from Bath Spa University and we wanted to give them the gift of a trip together to celebrate all their hard work. We knew we wanted to see my brother Pat and his family, who live in Germany and whom we haven’t seen since pre-COVID. So that meant the destination was likely northern Europe, and the dates available were mid-September to mid-October.

We decided to start in northern Europe and work our way south as the fall season progressed, in order to enjoy the best weather. I don’t know why we chose Scandinavia for the first ten days, when Bob and I would be traveling alone before meeting up with family for the second half of the vacation. But a company called Tour Radar, offered a reasonably-priced tour of four countries on the perfect dates for our schedule. (We love traveling, but we’re not rich!) Bob found a 10-day tour of Scandinavia that included breakfasts but no other meals, an option we preferred because sometimes we like to share meals, or just have ice cream for lunch, or try street food while exploring a town. The cost was $1600 apiece.

The tour looked pretty whirlwind, so we decided to treat it as a “taste” of Scandinavia, with the idea of going back and spending more time in any places we found particularly appealing. It included travel by bus in a clockwise circle around Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland, by way of buses, a funicular, several water crossings, a fjord cruise, and even an overnight ferry.

The tour was actually conducted by Europamundo, a company of the JTB group, the largest company of tourism and travel in Asia.

This was the itinerary, lifted directly from the provided literature, with some edits for brevity or clarification:

Day 1. Copenhagen (Denmark)

Arrival and free-time exploration of Copenhagen.

Day 2. Copenhagen, Odense, Aarhus (Denmark)

Bus tour of the Danish capital with a local guide. Travel to Jutland, passing through pleasant scenery on our way. En route we take a 20km bridge over the sea and stop at Odense, where we can visit its gothic cathedral and the house where Hans Christian Andersen grew up. We continue on to Aarhus and our accommodation.

Day 3. Aarhus (Denmark), Ferry to Norway, Kristiansand , Kristiansand , Stavanger (Norway)

We travel to the coastal city of Hirtshals, where we take a 3-hour ferry crossing the North Sea to Kristiansand (Norway). We will continue along Norway’s southern coastline and enjoy its stunning landscapes. Next stop in Flekkefjord, a town with its wooden houses and tiny restaurants on a fjord. Arrival to Stavanger, a small picturesque town that has an active port by the fjord.

Day 4. Stavanger, Bergen (Norway)

Upon leaving the city, we will stop at the ‘Swords in Rock’ monument, where we will be reminded of the Vikings, before continuing the very beautiful scenic tour. We follow the route going through tunnels, bridges and travel some stretches by boat to go along the fjord coast of Norway. One of its undersea tunnels is the deepest one in the world. This stage gets more relaxed and spectacular with its two boat trips. We will arrive in BERGEN at lunch time. We take a funicular trip to Mount Fløyen which offers amazing views of the town and Bergen fjord. There will be some leisure time later to enjoy the capital city of fjords.

Day 5. Bergen, Oslo (Norway)

More fantastic landscapes today, images of Norway’s interior region fjords, glaciers, lakes and forests. We will travel to Sognefjord, Norway’s largest fjord. Prior to arrival, we will stop at the beautiful Tvindefossen waterfall. We will take a magnificent cruise through a fjord between the cities of Gudvangen and Flam, and enjoy stunning landscapes and views of glaciers during this two-hour voyage. We continue our journey crossing magnificent snow-covered landscapes. We travel through Lærdal Tunnel, one of the longest in the world. Next, a visit to Borgund’s 12th-century wooden church which is considered Norway’s best-preserved medieval church. We arrive in Oslo with free time to check out its port, main streets, and the artworks at Frognerparken.

Day 6. Oslo (Norway), Orebro, Estocolmo, Stockholm (Sweden)

We include a sightseeing tour with a local guide of the Norwegian capital; this city combines its vibrant modern architecture with its classical buildings, magnificent scenery and large parks with sculptures. It has been nominated the "European green capital". After the tour, if you want you can visit the Vikings museum. Departure for Sweden. Enjoy landscapes with forests and lakes. Next stop in Orebro, a town next to a beautiful lake with a castle and charming historic center. Time for stroll and to take lunch. Continuing to Stockholm, arriving in the evening.

Day 7. Stockholm, Estocolmo (Sweden)

Today we take a panoramic tour of this very beautiful capital city built on 13 islands joined together. We will see the Gamla Stand or the “City between the Bridges”, the old quarter of the city, full of life where there are many monumental buildings such as the Nobel Museum, alongside the main square of Stortorget, which pays tribute to the winners of the Nobel Prizes, the Cathedral, and the Royal Palace. Whenever possible, we will enjoy a pretty view from the Fjällgatan viewpoint. Then leisure time. We recommend visiting the museums and parks. Optionally, we suggest a visit to the City Hall and to the Vasa Museum.

Day 8. Stockholm, Estocolmo (Sweden), Ferry Estocolmo, Turku (Helsinki)

Enjoy a free day of leisure in Stockholm. In the evening we will board a modern ferry traveling overnight to Finland, where accommodation will be in double cabins with private bathrooms.

Day 9. Ferry Estocolmo (Sweden to Finland), Turku , Naantali, Helsinki (Finland)

As we arrive to Finland, we recommend that you go to the ship’s deck for sunrise, enjoy mesmerizing landscapes from the sea as we sail along Aland Islands, hundreds of islands covered by forests. We disembark the ferry and have time to walk around Turku, a city with a very strong Swedish influence. We continue our journey to the neighboring city of Naantali, a very picturesque town with wooden houses next to the sea. We travel on until we arrive in Helsinki, reaching at lunchtime. In the afternoon enjoy leisure time, you will be able to explore the city, with its old market, buildings with Russian influence, and churches.

Day 10. Helsinki (Finland)

We enjoy a boat trip to Suomenlinna Islands, a group of islands where we can witness a great fortress that used to protect the sea entry to the city, it has been declared World Heritage Site. Take time to walk around, it is possible to cross the islands through small pedestrian bridges. Free time during the afternoon.

We were excited! We scheduled a couple of nights in Copenhagen at the beginning of the tour, packed our KF-94 masks, found house sitters to live with the cat, and set out on Sept. 18 from Boston Logan for a new kind of traveling adventure.

3 Tage Kopenhagen

06.09.22: Ankunft Kopenhagen

Nachdem ich mir tagsüber Odense angeschaut hatte, ging es dann abends weiter nach Kopenhagen. Mein letztes Hostel auf meiner Reise hatte wirklich sehr viel zu bieten und hat mich echt beeindruckt. Die Zimmer waren sehr schön, die Gemeinschaftsküche war verglast im obersten Stock, sodass man eine wunderschöne Sicht auf die umliegende Stadt hatte und es hab 3 verschiedene Bars und Lounges, wo auch viele Spiele bereit standen. Eine dieser Bars besucht ich am Abend auch mit einem Mädchen, dass ich zuvor beim kochen kennenlernte und letztlich spielten wir bis in die Nacht verschiedene Spiele mit anderen Hostelbewohnern.

07.09.22: Rathaus, Schloss Amalienborg, Nyhavn, Streetfood-Island „Reffen“ und Christinshavn

Am nächsten Morgen stattete ich zunächst dem Rathaus einen Besuch ab. Dieses ist nicht nur riesig, sondern auch einfach wunderschönen mit zahlreichen Wandbemalungen und Verzierungen. Besonders gefallen hat mir die kleine Bibliothek im Rathaus. Weiter ging es zum Schloss Amalienborg, wo ich den Wechsel der Wachen anschauen durfte. Im Vergleich zum Wachwechsel in Stockholm war es zwar weniger spektakulär, aber dennoch immer noch sehr cool anzusehen. Dort traf ich mich dann auch mit einem Mädchen, dass ich morgens in meinem Zimmer kennenlernte und wir schauen uns danach noch zusammen die Statue der kleinen Meerjungfrau an sowie das Kastell von Kopenhagen. Anschließend liefen wir wieder zurück Richtung Zentrum und stoppten am wunderschönen Nyhavn - mein Lieblingsort in Kopenhagen. Mit den vielen kleinen bunten Häusern in strahlenden Farben ist es einfach nur wunderschön, dort entlang zu laufen. Danach fuhren wir mit dem Fahrrad zur Streetfood Island Reffen und trafen uns dort mit anderen Leuten aus dem Hostel. Dies ist ein riesigen Gelände mit zahlreichen Streetfood-Ständen und einer totalen coolen Atmosphäre. Gemeinsam aßen wir dort zu Mittag und liefen anschließend in das Viertel Christianshavn. Nachdem wir nur kurz durch die „Freistadt Cristiana“ liefen, spazierten wir anschließend noch kurz am Kanal in diesem Viertel entlang, bevor es dann letztlich wieder zurück ins Hostel ging. Nach einer Runde im Fitnessstudio (denn das hatte das Hostel auch zu bieten) verbrachte ich den Abend mit dem Mädchen aus meinem Zimmer in einer der Bars und wir spielten die meiste Zeit Tischkicker.

08.09.22: Viertel Nørrebro, Blågårdsplatz, Brücke Dronning Louises Bro und Tivoli Garden

Auch diesen Tag verbrachte ich gemeinsam mit dem Mädchen aus meinem Zimmer. Dafür steuerten wir zunächst das Vieftel Nørrebro an. Diese Viertel ist für die schönste Nachbarschaft Europas nominiert und wir konnten sofort verstehen warum. Die Gebäude und einzelnen Gassen sind einfach wunderschön. Wir liefen lange durch die einzelnen Gassen und besuchten verschiedene Secondhand-Shops, die das Viertel zu bieten hat. Besonders gefallen hat uns der Blågårdsplatz und die umliegenden Gassen, die aber vor allem nochmal zur Abendzeit einen besonders schönen Charme haben sollen. Über die wunderschöne Brücke Dronning Louises Bro ging es dann zurück Richtung Zentrum. Dabei machten wir dann einen kleinen Stopp in einer süßen, kleinen Bäckerei und aßen eine frische Zimtschnecke. Über einen Umweg über die Størget (die Haupteinkaufsstraße) liefen wir zurück ins Hostel. Dort legten wir dann nur unsere Sachen schnell ab, zogen uns um und es ging sofort wieder los. Und zwar in den Tivoli Garden - den Vergnügungspark in Kopenhagen direkt gegenüber vom Hauptbahnhof. Wir nahmen uns Zeit einfach nur über ihn zu laufen, denn der Park ist einfach nur bezaubernd schön. Zum Schluss nahmen wir dann aber auch eine Achterbahnfahrt, die uns beiden einfach nur super viel Spaß gemacht hat. Abgeschlossen haben wir den Tag dann mit einem Essen im Restaurant im Hostel, da es von ins beiden der letzte Abend sein sollte - und zwar aßen wir das Pizza und Pasta Buffet, was einfach unglaublich lecker war. Anschließend machten wir nochmal einen Abstecher in die Lounge, wo wir dann den Abend mit zwei weiteren Mädchen verbrachten, auf die wir vor Ort trafen.

09.09.22: Rückfahrt

Da mein Zug zurück erst ganz spät am Abend gehen sollte, nutzte ich den Tag nochmal, um mir etwas anzuschauen. Dafür lief ich zunächst in das Viertel Kødbyen, das auch viele schöne Häuser hat und viele Möglichkeiten zum weggehen bietet. VVon dort aus lief ich dann weiter in die Værnedamsvej - anscheinend eine der schönsten Straßen Kopenhagens. Danach ging es weiter in den Park Frederiksberg Havn. Durch diesen sehr schön angelegten Park spazierte ich längere Zeit durch und genoss die teilweise aufkommende Sonne. An manchen Stellen kann man sogar einen Blick in den Zoo werfen, der sich direkt neben dem Park befindet. Danach entschied ich mich dazu nochmal zu den schönsten Ecken zu laufen. So besuchte ich beispielsweise nochmal den Nyhavn. Gegen frühen Abend war ich dann zurück im Hostel, holte meine Sachen ab und ging nochmal eine Runde duschen, bevor es dann zum Bahnhof gehen sollte. Es ist ein komisches Gefühl, nach so langer Zeit wieder heimzufahren, dennoch freue ich mich auch schon wieder auf daheim.
