Kraina and I have been chatting, not surprisingly, about Sallen since last night. (Well, last night my time. Later her time.)

I told her that I feel like Callen's relationship with Sam is such a bigger (and truer) indicator of his growth than his romantic one.

The finale seems to be acknowledging how important their relationship is/was, and I was just reading Chris O'Donnell's interview with TV Insider, and he seems to realize how important the duo is, too:

What is your favorite moment from NCIS LA that is really representative of your character?

Chris O’Donnell: Hard to pick one moment, but I know it would be a scene with LL [Cool J]. Our relationship/chemistry was really what made this thing work. It was that way from the first episode, and I enjoyed every day we spent together.

For all the important moments and journey(s) Callen has had over the years, even the man who brought him to life for 14 years feels that Sam would be involved somehow in the ones dearest to him.

At the end of the day, this relationship is what the show pivoted to after the conception (as reiterated by Gemmill in a recent interview) that sold stakeholders on it.

Oops, this turned into a novel, so here's a Read More:

I remember getting to read the script for the first part of the backdoor pilot before it aired thanks to a friend with some connections. Some things were changed from the script, including that Sam was originally doing the Renko undercover role. I'm guessing they knew they couldn't just hide LL Cool J's role with OSP so they changed it. But Shane Brennan also recalled how they were about to shoot the first scene with Chris and Todd, and they were talking in the van. No one knew if it would work or not, and so everyone on the other side of the camera held their breath and then "Action." And it worked instantly.

The show was about the things that shape your identity, and who you are, with the exploration of how the roles we play in different parts of our lives impact that. G Callen could not have had a more polar opposite partner in that area alone. G never felt like he could settle into being someone without knowing his past, and he always felt like something was missing. He was incomplete and broken. His undercover work only benefitted from that: a blank canvas not committed to anything really, who also probably tried out different traits when he was in character.

Enter Sam Hanna: a man who couldn't be more self-assured and aware of who he is. He's confident with great strength of character. Who you see when you meet Sam Hanna is exactly who Sam Hanna is. He's a mountain of morals, honor, and duty. In a way, yes, his service and career are a big part of who he is, especially since he was raised by a father who was also in service. But it's less that that life gave him those character traits and more that they fit so well into them. Sam never faltered on undercover work, but it was, for obvious reasons, not an obvious choice for him. It created a natural challenge, and at that point in his career, Sam needed one. He never likes to go without a challenge for too long because you should always keep growing.

They made for a great pair to complement each other at work. G had a tendency to go too far in and lone wolf into danger, and he was allowed to do it because he got results. But Sam Hanna's job was to be a partner and get the job done. And he was not about to let G go too far in. There was a balance of pulling each other that was so organic it couldn't help but creep into their personal lives, as well. G needed to learn to let someone in, and Sam Hanna was persistent with a huge heart. Sam had been surrounded with people with traits similar to him for so long, that it didn't hurt to mix it up and even created a challenge -- which we know Sam loves and is always up for. They challenged each other. They helped each other. And they cared for each other.

For a show that was no stranger to "testosterone undertone," toxic masculinity territory is always a danger. Most of the characters on this show definitely have bases in tropes, especially network procedural tropes. However, the people they cast have helped make them so much more. What follows is an opinion, but I stand by it. (Also, while I'm talking about Callen and Sam specifically here, this extends to other characters on this show, especially the male ones.) They ended up with Chris and Todd, two men who are extremely frank about feelings and emotions in real life, and who aren't afraid to hug and say they love each other in interviews. Often the Sallen banter just rang so true to conversations Chris and Todd had probably been overheard having on set, so it makes even more sense that their offscreen traits and relationship made their way into the show, as well. I seriously doubt we would've ended up with so many casual "I love you's," hugs, and HAND HOLDING between two grown men in this career if they had different actors.

I cannot overstate how important it is that this relationship not only existed, but existed for 14 years on a network channel, specifically the one with some of the most traditional overall values in their shows.

“Just admit it,” Deeks said, walking in beside Kensi, who seemed to be doing her best to ignore him.

“Oh my god, why can’t you just drop it?” she asked, tossing her bag onto her desk.

“Why can’t you just admit it?” She pinched the bridge of her nose, settling a hand on her cocked hip as she took a deep breath.

“I will not admit to anything because you’re being ridiculous and it’s not true.”

Deeks spun towards Sam and Callen and demanded,

“Which of is in better shape?” He discreetly flexed his pecs which were visible beneath the material of his t-shirt.

“Why do you think we’d have any interest in this?” Sam asked, not looking up from the origami penguin he was making.

“If you don’t help us decide, we’ll just end up arguing for longer,” Deeks threatened and Callen immediately said,

“Deeks is in better shape.” Kensi made an outraged noise while Deeks got up to fist bump Callen.

“What are you basing your vote on?” Sam asked despite himself.

“I’ve seen Deeks without his shirt enough times to judge accurately.” Deeks frowned at that, scratching his temple.

“Yeah, I think that sounds a lot creepier than you meant it to.”

“Callen’s vote doesn’t count,” Kensi decided, crossing her arms defiantly.

“Then how do you suggest we decide?” Deeks asked.

“A competition is the only answer.” Kensi statement was met with a resigned sigh from Callen.

“What kind of competition?” he asked, seeming to have given up on the idea of escaping true involvement.

“I’d say feats of strength, maybe like our own mini version of the Olympics,” Kensi decided almost instantly.

“Crossed with a bikini competition,” Deeks added, raising his eyebrows at Kensi.

“Ok, this whole idea is ridiculous, but you gotta be joking about the bikini part,” Sam butted in. Deeks leaned his way, nudging him with his shoulder.

“What, you don’t think I could rock a speedo?”

“My mind shudders at the thought.”

“I don’t know about a speedo, but maybe short shorts,” Kensi said contemplatively, eyeing Deeks as though she was imaging him in said short shorts. Callen cleared his throat before she could get too carried away.

“What exactly do you mean by feats of strength? Are we talking like the javelin or a little weight lifting?”

“I’m game to try the javelin,” Deeks said. Sam pointed his finger at him and said,

“No. We are not throwing any pointy objects.”

“Kill joy,” Deeks muttered.

“Fine, so have your little contest and be done with it,” Sam said.

“Oh no, you guys have to judge our performance.”

“Deeks, I am not judging you on anything, least of all your ability to wear swimming trunks.”

“C’mon Sam, you know they’re going to nag us until we give in,” Callen pointed out. Sam sighed, but nodded.

“Fine.” He pointed severely at Deeks again. “But if I see you come out in a speedo, I’m done.”

“Understood,” Deeks agreed.

“Hey guys,” Eric started, standing halfway down the stairs with a slightly disturbed expression.

“You got a case, Eric,” Sam asked hopefully.

“Uh, no I was just checking to see what you guys are up to, but now I’m kind of regretting that decision. I heard something about Deeks in a speedo.” He made a face.

“Actually I’ve been forbidden from wearing a speedo.” Deeks sounded put out by the constraint and glared at Sam.

“Ok, I know I’m going to regret asking this, but why would you want to wear one in the first place?” Eric asked. “I can’t imagine it being very comfortable.”

“Kensi and Deeks want to have a strength and beauty contest to figure out which of them is in better shape,” Callen explained, taking pity on Eric. “We’re supposed to judge.”

“Ooh, just like the Olympics!” Eric said excitedly. “I’ll go get Nell. She won’t want to miss this.”

“I think Eric has severely misjudged what Nell enjoys,” Callen commented.

“Enough chitchat,” Kensi said, in a voice reminiscent of a drill sergeant. “It’s time to decide which sports we’re including and the rules for this competition.”

“I knew I should have called in sick,” Callen sighed.

Predictions about next week (odds are, most of these will be right):

Nothing real earth shattering happens

No one leaves (pretty much been confirmed already that the whole cast will return next season)

No Sallen feud (they were back to their usual chummy selves in the penultimate episode, so, I doubt there will be an actual falling out)

Cliffhanger of sorts

Emotional gut punching in ways (it’s Military after all)

No Hetty. (I’d be REALLY shook if she’s in a sneak peak or even in the finale.)

Just want to get this over with. Oh, and sometime this week will likely be the official S12 news.

DIYPedal_devlog[1] - low-pass filter & inverse polarity

Being that my output was noisy and low in volume I tried to investigate the low-pass filter used in Pedal-Pi. It’s a Sallen & Key 3rd order. They link this pdf with all the calculations. After skimming through it, I googled for a calculator. I found this one http://sim.okawa-denshi.jp/en/OPseikiLowkeisan.htm . I tried some values of the caps I have and finally found a combination with a cutoff at 20kHz~. I used 800Ohm and 10nF, with the couples of resistors and caps equal. To make the resistors I used a 470Ohm and a 330Ohm. After wiring the circuit up I only had 50Hz as output. It took me a lot to find out that I wired it exchanging the Vin+ with the Vin-. Probably it was oscillating, I don’t know.

Anyhow, this bug was lucky because I also found out the origin of the audio signal that could be heard with the program off. I got the polarity of the phone connector wrong. To me the best polarity was the one with the ground in tip and the channels back, in this way a mono and a stereo would have the ground in the same place and the positive polarity of the mono would be duplicated to the two stereo channels. Connecting a stereo jack to a mono output would work. I’m sure there’s a good reason why it is like it is, my knowledge is infinitesimal.

So, now my output is clearer and louder. I think I could solder the circuit on a prototype board. Oh, I also noticed that the coupling cap is shifting the output voltage, centering it near ground.

On the software side, I’ve implemented linear interpolation in the reproduction of the samples. Now it’s no more time-distorted.

I’d like to add more tracks or to try to implement some effect. To add more tracks I’d need tree more buttons per track, and to add an effect I would need a button per track, and/or one for the whole mix. I would also like to add a volume knob and a time-shift knob to each track. Obviously I’d like to add some leds to get out some feedback. I’ve being looking for how to have more outputs, and I’ve found out of expansion ICs, like MCP23017/MCP23S17. With 4 tracks I’d need 3 to 6 buttons (2 buttons for two effects, delay and reverb), and 3 to 6 leds. One led for the rec status, one for the play status and one for the recorded status. One led per effect. 24 GPIOs pins for the buttons and 10 for the leds, in a 5x5 matrix. I definitely need more pins.
