We note with sorrow the passing of acclaimed African-American artist Sam Gilliam. Gilliam was a master colorist, an explorer of the possibilities of abstraction, and an artist interested in the physical nature of painting. He was perhaps best known for his “drape” paintings. The NYT describes them this way: “Suspended from ceilings, the works fell and rose in great curving and swaths, guided in part by gravity. They were at once aggressive and seductive…”. We will show work by Gilliam at the upcoming Hamptons Fine Art Fair, July 14-17.” #samgilliam #artadvisory #blackartist #blackachievement #paintingoftheday #abstractexpressionism #abstractart #interiordesign #blackartists @hamptonsfineartfair #thehamptons #southampton https://www.instagram.com/p/CfVDSgiLRHf/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Posted @withregram • @pacegallery We are deeply saddened to announce that artist Sam Gilliam passed away on Saturday, June 25 at age 88. - Throughout his seven-decade career, Gilliam reinvented and continuously reshaped abstract painting and sculpture. Incorporating rich constellations of forms, textures, and materials to forge inventive compositions, his work has exerted a profound influence on subsequent generations of artists. - "Sam Gilliam was one of the giants of Modernism. He was a great friend and great artist who was able to convey the shared torments and triumphs of life through the universal language of abstraction. Sam was very much acclaimed in the 60s and 70s for his revolutionary work that freed the canvas from its support." —Arne Glimcher - Sam Gilliam’s family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund (@naacp_ldf), The Children’s Defense Fund (@childdefender1973), Rock Creek Conservancy (@loverockcreek), or an art institution of the donor’s choosing. - To read more about Sam's life, and Arne Glimcher's full statement, please visit the link in our bio. - Image: Portrait of Sam Gilliam. 🎨🕊#ArtIsAWeapon Peaceful journeys to the brilliant, groundbreaking, extraordinary artist #SamGilliam. Grateful for all the beauty he created Image: 📸 Collection of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, © Anthony Barboza 💕 Reposted from @nmaahc Our museum mourns the passing of groundbreaking artist Sam Gilliam. Gilliam was an influential painter that never stopped exploring new avenues of artistic expression. Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, Gilliam was an innovative color field painter who advanced the inventions associated with the Washington Color School —a movement initiated in Washington, D.C. in the 1950s that emphasized large fields of color in visual artwork as a response to the Abstract Expressionist works. Like the artists who first experimented with staining techniques in the early 1950s, Gilliam asserted minimal control over his work, allowing the paints to soak through the pliant canvas and form diffuse stains. With this method, Gilliam created these unexpected abstractions to offer complex visual experiences. Gilliam's work is currently on display in our museum's "Defending Freedom, Defining Freedom: The Era of Segregation 1876-1968" exhibition, which captures the significant aspects of that struggle and illustrates how African Americans not only survived the challenges set before them but crafted an important role for themselves in the nation. By upholding a personal commitment to creating innovative and colorful abstract works, Gilliam didn't need to meet others’ expectations or desires. He has been and will continue to be an inspiration to all artists with an idea and the determination to think outside the box to create masterpieces. #APeoplesJourney #ANationsStory #BlackArtists #AbstractArt #BlackGirlArtGeeks https://www.instagram.com/p/CfWuECrgDSq/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
