A few more character designs for #InorOutPictureBook It was tricky to decide which duo worked best and these guys are the only characters in the book so it felt super important to get them right! I coloured a few sketches to see which colour combo/style worked best.🎨 🐱Early on I sketched Cat a lot using an Ecoline pen that I found lying around. It turned out to be a lovely shade of bluey grey. I became a bit obsessed with it and thought it suited Cat perfectly. I really love these kinds of random happy accidents along the way! I didn’t want Dog & Cat to be too similar in colour or too drab and dark. Dog and Cat went through a few more changes but these are very close to the final characters you see in the book!📚 I feel like the character for Cat appeared quite quickly and he didn’t change too much from the early drawings. I just added a lil bit more fluffiness to make him look a bit more pesky and cheeky in the final artwork!😼 Dog definitely took a little longer to get right and he changed quite a lot. I do love drawing a big chunky bum (as you can see in some of these sketches!😂)Though we all felt he looked better slimmer with longer limbs to make his proportions a bit different from Cats! Can’t believe 🐱In or Out🐶is publishing next Thursday - it’s come around so FAST!⚡️ I thought it’d be fun to show some early initial sketches for the main characters from waaay back when I first started work on the book.✏️ Creating characters is one of my favourite parts of the process. Drawing lots of variations, different poses and expressions. Figuring out how the characters will interact with each other and working out if they are a good fit for the story. I guess it’s a bit like an audition! We were keen for Cat to look fun/cheeky and Dog to be grumpy with a long suffering look but didn’t want them to be obvious breeds of cat or dog.
