ok so. SO. after vibrating in my seat and fantasizing abt lying down in the middle of the floor for the rest of time as i think about this concept, i have come to the following conclusion: mixtapes. and i mean in the classic "hey i made you this mixtape" sense

reader and jihoon are both producers for the same label and don't really interact that much at first. in fact, they don't actually even meet for the first time until soonyoung invites them both to his birthday party and they start talking shop, bonding over teasing soonyoung, and then ending the night with a promise to grab lunch together sometime.

fast forward a couple of months and they are officially Friends. they've managed to start a tradition of getting lunch together once a week and bitching about various work bullshit, and they've also started to hang out together in group settings after realizing they have more mutual friends as well

reader is the first one to send jihoon a song. it's a few hours after their weekly vent session, jihoon having taken up most of the time complaining about shitty higher-ups giving ridiculous deadlines and stuck-up idol wannabes trying to tell him how to do his job without having a clue about what his job actually is, and he gets a message from reader that says "i feel like this fits ur current mood" with a link to a song. [cw the song linked has a somewhat startling gun sound] he clicks on the link, curious, and then bursts out laughing after a few confused moments of listening bc that was NOT what he was expecting, at all

and that's how it starts, really. a few days later, he sends reader a song with the caption "how much u wanna bet soonyoung would choreograph something to this just bc it has the word 'tiger' in the title" / "no bet he absolutely would" / "ur no fun :P" / "sorry can't hear you i'm sending it to soonyoung as we speak"

pretty soon they're sending songs back and forth almost daily "what are ur thoughts on this" / "?? i don't speak french" / "and?" / "...ok yeah this is p good" "is this kinda close to the vibe you're trying to get for that one group you're working with?" / "not quite. but that's ok bc IM Vibin with this one" "i need u to stop whatever ur doing and listen to this with the bassist bass you can get with w/ ur setup" / "ok??" ... "holy shit" / "RIGHT?"

fast forward another couple of months, and reader shows up to jihoon's studio with a can of coke zero and a flash drive. "what's this?" / "this, my dear woozi-ssi, is going to be the solution to our creative blocks" and then reader goes on to explain their idea: they both have tracks that they're stuck on (personal, professional, or otherwise), and so they're gonna 'sisterhood of the traveling pants this shit' ('i literally have no idea what you're talking about'). aka: reader put some files they're having trouble with on this flash drive, and jihoon's gonna add any notes/ideas he has and then give it back with some of his own trouble files on it. rinse and repeat

and not only does it work ("ohmygod i've been trying to figure out that bridge transition for DAYS THANK YOU") but it also becomes Their Thing. like, they're used to collaborating with other writers/producers/etc bc it comes with the job, but something about this silly little flash drive... feels Special. [*cough*it's because they're catching Feelings*cough*]

tHIS IS GETTING SO LONG FUCK OKAY other things i would include in this fic: - one noticing the other has been working on a lot more love songs lately (or maybe a lot more Sad (read: pining) love songs) - reader has a bad day at some point and they end up losing the flash drive and they have a breakdown over it (jihoon comforts them and also helps them find it we love emotional hurt/comfort in this household) - scenes where they're individually waxing poetic about the other to different friends and the friends are like "bro. ur in love with them" "uh, no? they just have a great work ethic and a great taste in music also their lyricism is just—" "you. are. in. love." "i admire them professionally!

AND THEN THE CONCLUSION!! one of them decides to bite the metaphorical bullet and confess their Feelings. this could be either of them, but i'm gonna go with jihoon bc i can. so of course he can't just say "hey i love you" like a normal person, he has to confess through music. so he goes out and buys a new flash drive (with a really cute cover bc he knows they'd like it) and puts two folders on there. the first folder is full of instrumental files and is titled "all the times i couldn't find the words". and the second folder is titled "and all the times i could" and it's all love songs he's written inspired by/for reader

he sneaks into their studio and leaves the flash drive on your desk while you're in a meeting, and then he Waits and waits and waits some more until it's time to go home and it's been total radio silence and his heart feels like it's been crushed. so he starts to head home in the rain (bc i am a cheesy bastard and love rainy confession scenes) but after a few minutes of walking he hears shouting behind him and he turns to see you sprinting at him while screaming his name and before he can get a word out you're clutching his shoulders, soaked to the bone and asking "do you mean it? the songs, did— do you really mean it?"

and all he can do is nod because his heart still hasn't quite found its way back to his chest yet, and then he can't nod anymore because you're kissing him. you're kissing him, and he drops the umbrella he was holding and you're both kissing in the rain bc you're both obnoxious helpless romantics and "y/n-ah, i mean it— i mean it. i love you"

"i love you too, you stupid romantic bastard oh my god"

"hey, you're the one who started kissing me in the rain"

and it ends like the cheesy romcom this turned into bc i couldn't help myself and i need to lie down in a puddle of feelings now k thx

savv this is kind of an existential question .. do you think love is just a method of survival? like, as humans, it's impossible to walk alone. Historically, we've always been walking in tribes. Do you think love is just something that strengthens that 'tribe'? or do you think it's something more? because personally, i'd hate to think that everything we do in this life (including loving) is just to survive. but let me know what you think.

OMG this is such an interesting question. Sorry for taking so long to get into this. I'm gonna be answering this at the top of my head, so I might get some facts incorrect but anyone's free to correct me.

I personally believe humans have a natural propensity to coexist with one another and although humans have an animalistic side, we have free will and facilities that transcend what animals have.

The love which humans have comprises both our animalistic side and the higher functioning facilities that make us human.

Altruism is actually primitive behavior and can be found not just in humans but in another animals that function in groups so I think this natural behavior is found in humans to and it makes up some of what humans consider 'love.'

As mentioned above though, humans have free will and they have the facilities to transcend animalistic behavior and natural instinct. Humans have a much higher capacity than other animals to think for themselves and that's why I think, what humans consider 'love' is much more complex than just simple altruism.

That's why my personal view of love is complex. (and probably a little weird)

The idea that love is just an emotion is a very surface level understanding of what love actually is. Because emotions cannot be controlled, they're almost similar to instinct and love is such a high functioning concept for me that it has to be something that humans do that differentiates them from animals or from creatures that run on instinct.

I personally believe that love is a volitional act, it's somehting we as humans do, despite emotions, despite circumstances. Loving is the act we decide to do after a long period of discernment. It's the choice we make, it's what we decide is the most 'loving act' or the most appropriate act as a certain moment.

Love is having the self discipline of throwing out pride and preconceived notions in an attempt to understand someone or something about someone.

Love is realizing you're a flawed human and you have to change for the better of the people you love.

Love is sacrificing not out of a hero complex but out of genuine desire to give.

Loving is hard. And if you think loving is easy then that concept you consider ‘loving’ is probably not actually ‘loving.’

because a part of me wants to do something along the lines of a classic regency au, marrying for political reasons and learning how to navigate their relationship while essentially being total strangers that were shoved into being business partners who are also married now i guess. they have their individual kingdoms to think about so there would be a lot of emotional angst&hurt/comfort around the concept of "are you showing me the real you right now, or is this the you that you think I need to see in order to keep this marriage together" kind of thing (would have a happy ending where they do actually get to know each other and blah blah blah happily ever after)

and another part of me wants to do something Angsty like having reader agree to marry Seungkwan bc he needs a visa and you guys have been friends for forever, so of course you'd do this for him, except you forget to mention the fact that you've been in love with him for years now and the wedding and honeymoon is a whole new level of torture for you bc you know he doesn't actually love you like that, he really does see you as his best friend and nothing more (and for the ANGSTY angst, you also get to watch as seungkwan falls in love with someone else) ((maybe this would end there, maybe this would actually end up being polyfic with a happy ending who knows??? certainly not me))

savv .. do you think dating should be competitive? Like i get that we should try our absolute best to impress someone when we pursue them before the relationship. But should we like keep doing that when we get into the relationship? i see a lot of people around me comparing their bf/gf/partner with someone else that MIGHT impress them better. And honestly, this scares me, because someone can fall out of love just like that because i don't impress them.

I WAS SUPPOSED TO DO A THESIS ON THIS. Like damn, I read a whole book and a bunch of other studies on this.

To answer this question: do you think dating should be competitive?, let me point out something.

Is dating competitive?

Dating is naturally competitive. There are actually economic theories of dating and economists and psychologists actually noticed that in our heteronormative society, the industries that thrive in a certain place and the sex ratio/gender ratio that seemed to propulgate in that certain industry actually affect the dating game for people.

For example, in huge financial districts where there are more women or gay men, it's actually much harder to find someone 'date-able' among the men because people who are the minority, people who are 'chased', realize even just unconsciously that they are the minority, so they don't have to try so hard to be a good partner but people in the majority, if women (maybe gay men too) outnumber men let's say, then they try much harder to find a good date.

In huge IT districts, areas with lots of factories (Silicon Valley, Colorado etc.), men (and maybe lesbians) tend to outnumber others, so they have to try harder to find a good mate so they end up consciously or unconsciously fixing themselves to become more attractive.

Which moves on to my next question:

Do you think dating should be competitive?

Yes. It should be competitive but not in the way I'm presenting above. I think that people should be constantly improving themselves even when they're already in a relationship.

I see a lot of relationships which fall out because I have seen people turn extremely unpleasant when they get into a shitty relationship. They get extremely sensitive where talking to them is like constantly walking on egg shells. Sometimes, they get lazy with their jobs, they get lazy when taking care of themselves or they get overly possessive of their partners.

I have seen people literally say "This is me, I can't change how I am anymore."

Literally, thirty, forty, fifty year olds are constantly maturing and people at twenty deciding that they are already the peak of perfection and that they refuse to change for the better is just... I wouldn't date someone like that.

My boyfriend, my close friends and I all agreed that this statement "This is me, I can't change how I am anymore,' may seem pretty harmless but I find this also a red flag in a conversation when deciding who to commit to.

Every conflict, every argument should always end with both parties thinking 'how can we do better next time?' A good partner will change facets of their personality to accommodate the quirks of their partner. If two people refuse to change even just a bit while in a relationship, the relationship is doomed to fail.

This is also a major red flag in my opinion. I mean personally, the reason I can't see myself dating other people is because I don't think anyone would be able to replace how much my boyfriend knows about me, how much we've been through together and how well I know my boyfriend. It takes years to build a friendship then a relationship all at once and the fact, that people are so willing to change them just because someone else might impress them better, makes me think they see a relationship more as a commodity than an actual commitment.

At the same time though, as mentioned above, people should be constantly improving and that's why an element of 'competitiveness' should exist.

People can only do so much to change themselves but like 'so much' is still something so tbh, I told my boyfriend and i told this to a lot of people already, I don't think I'd be able to date someone hedonistic.

They don't have to be perfect, I know people will fail but I don't think it's right either to settle in a relationship where someone is just incredibly lazy, slacks off or decides they can't work hard to be better everyday.

That's where 'competitiveness' comes form if you know what I mean. Dating and getting into a relationship is life changing, relationships will influence a lot of your decisions in life so don't just dedicate a huge chunk of your life to someone who refuses to change or work towards making a better relationship everyday.
