Elementary: Rekt in Real Life (5x14)
This was not a good episode. It didn't really hold my interest, and Sherlock and Joan were pretty much swallowed up by the crazy plot monster. Too bad.
Cons:
The case of the week was so convoluted that it seemed like it should have been stretched out over multiple episodes. A guy who live-streams interactive video games and recruits players for sponsored teams ends up getting taken out during a live broadcast online. Gregson's niece was watching at the time. We're then led to a guy who signed a deal with a kid the victim had recruited, and then we learn that there are Czech women were are actually secretly prostitutes who have been rescued from human trafficking. Oh, and over on the side there's also a woman who hates one of the players because he kills seals as part of the traditions of his inuit tribe, and she's an animal rights activist. In the end, it's this woman's attorney who set up the crime.
Between the human trafficking, the commentary about professional video game playing, the overexposure of the victim's attack via the internet, the concern over indigenous lifestyles vs. commercial hunting... wow, was this episode crowded. Every time I thought we were on a path, things would veer off in a new direction. And not in a good way. Any one of these elements could have made for an interesting episode. I wanted to learn more about the professional world of video games. Or about this human trafficking scheme. Or about the seal hunting. Oh yeah and there was also a bunch of stuff about the ice caps melting and trade routes and stuff. All of these things piled up together? Yikes.
As I mentioned, Sherlock and Joan got basically no time to do anything. They were just along for a very long-winded and convoluted ride, and I didn't learn anything about either one of them or their relationship along the way.
While I enjoyed the subplot more than the case of the week, (shocking, I know) I didn't think it had enough time to really grow and develop. If we could just do a full episode focusing on Shinwell, that would be fantastic. Give his character the room to grow and change.
Pros:
The one moment in the main plot that I quite enjoyed was Joan getting to speak Mandarin as they worked out a part of the case. It's rare that we see Joan contribute something that Sherlock couldn't have done, so I rather liked that moment.
In the subplot, Shinwell was contacted by his daughter. When he goes to meet her after school, she says she needs help. A young gangster kid has been harassing Chivonne, and she asks her dad to help fix the problem. Shinwell tells Joan about it, and Joan convinces him that direct retaliation is not the answer. Instead, Shinwell goes to talk to this kid, offering to give the kid some territory for his drug dealing business in exchange for leaving Chivonne alone. After Shinwell tells Chivonne the good news, he asks to walk her home. Turns out, Chivonne just wanted her dad's unique set of skills to get rid of a creepy guy. She doesn't want a relationship with him from this point on, as she can't forgive him for his past.
While I think more time would have done this plot thread a lot of favors, I was still a fan of what we got. Shinwell has been trying to do better by his daughter this whole time, so for Chivonne to reach out to him specifically to help with a gang-related issue was really tough. But Shinwell didn't revert back to old ways, or at least not entirely. The end, when Chivonne said she didn't want anything to do with her father, was really hard to swallow.
I hope as we move forward, we can spend more time examining Shinwell's job as an informant. I think that might be an interesting avenue to explore. Is there a chance Chivonne might forgive him if she knows how hard he's working to take down the bad people he used to work with?
Until next time...

Apocalypse Part Deux; or, I’ve got some questions that need answers next season
Man, the finale really solidified the Sam and Dean/Jesus parallels. We have verbal confirmation, by Castiel, that the apocalypse in this alternate universe (referred to as AU from here on out) is directly caused by Mary never making a deal with Azazel and Sam and Dean never being born. Sam and Dean both experience immeasurable suffering in order to keep humanity safe, because without them around there’s barely a humanity left to save. Which, of course, got me thinking about how the apocalypse even came about in this AU.
Cut for length:
So far, the facts we have about the AU come from Bobby Singer, who is still alive in the AU, and are as follows:
Mary Campbell and John Winchester were in love.
John Winchester was killed by Azazel in 1973.
Mary refused to make a deal with Azazel for John’s life.
Sam and Dean are, in turn, never born.
Azazel kills Mary sometime in 2007, approximately.
Here’s what we know about the relationship between John, Mary, and Azazel from S4 and S5:
In 5x14 My Bloody Valentine a cupid tells Team Free Will that John and Mary’s union was “a very big deal upstairs” and a “top priority arrangement”. A cupid’s intervention was needed to get them to fall in love because they “couldn’t stand each other at first, but when when we were done with them? Perfect couple.” He even goes on to point out that “[Dean] and Sam needed to be born.”
In 4x03 In the Beginning Castiel sent Dean back to 1973, at first telling him he need to “stop it” (stop what? Stop Mary from making a deal?) but tells him on the return trip home that Dean was powerless to stop Azazel and that the true purpose of Dean’s trip was to gather information about Azazel’s end game with the psychic children. This bout of time travel is, incidentally, the reason Azazel goes after Mary in the first place; Dean unwittingly tells him that Sam is the special child Lucifer is looking for and that Mary is his mother. Azazel kills John and persuades Mary to make a deal.
So my questions for the AU are as follows:
Why did Mary refuse the deal? She clearly loved John more than anything, he even promised to take her away from her current life and live together unobstructed by Mary’s parents and her life as a hunter.
Why didn’t Heaven intervene when she refused? If Sam and Dean’s births were so important, why didn’t they do everything they could to ensure that would happen? Their births were preordained; even Gabriel tells the brothers that “from the moment Dad flipped on the lights around here, we knew it was all gonna end with you” (5x08 Changing Channels).
In addition, Michael and Lucifer are shown to have some degrees of omniscience, with Michael correctly predicting that Dean would say yes (even if Dean never became a vessel, he did still say yes) and Lucifer with a more accurate prediction that Sam would say yes to him in Detroit (and unfortunately did become a vessel). Wouldn’t this mean they have greater incentive to see John and Mary together? They know their plans are ruined otherwise. Obviously there are ways that we currently know of to keep an alternate vessel from deteriorating, and we have seen Lucifer use plenty of alternates now, with Nick lasting the longest and is likely still and available vessel, but who is Michael using? We’ve only ever seen him use John (now dead) and Adam (who doesn’t exist in this AU).
Michael and Lucifer go to considerable lengths to obtain a “yes” from their vessels. Lucifer attempts to seduce Sam using an image of his dead girlfriend Jessica, and tries to persuade him with sweet words and promises of revenge on those who have wronged him. Michael incinerates his own sister for daring to prevent the birth of the brothers and harming the Winchester family in the process. Did they really give up on Mary so easily? Not likely.
If Sam and Dean are never around to break the first and last of the 66 seals, who does break them? Who are Michael and Lucifer possessing during the AU apocalypse? Are they even the same people?
So my theory is that in this AU, a different pair of siblings are the true vessels. These siblings are possibly vastly different from Sam and Dean. Did they consent to being vessels or has that aspect of the story not changed, and Michael and Lucifer still make due with alternate vessels? If they did consent, why? What factors led to them saying yes?
I really want to see who the new siblings are and get some insight into how they handled the events leading up to the apocalypse.
