WONDERS OF YEONGNYU: TALES OF LUXURY & LEGEND

recently, seongnam university once again successfully completed its annual end of the semester camping trip, a trip that rewards the hard-working students of our campus with a chance to get away from the hustle and bustle of schoolwork. some say this trip is an accurate reward for the trials and tribulations they feel over the course of the school year; others claim that it is not nearly enough compensation for the amount of schoolwork and other stress that a highly rigorous university such as ours seems to facilitate.

this year, the trip was held in a scenic town about three hours away from campus, called yeongnyu, home to the lavish luxury camping grounds known as starlight resort. the area surrounding the town and camping grounds is indeed picturesque; nothing near seongnam rivals anywhere close to the scenery many of our students witnessed over the weekend. the activities seemed to also be endless, from various water sports to exciting off-roading experiences to even some intimate moments spent watching the stars with the sounds of nature as the soundtrack.

some students took to exploring that wilderness; we at seongnam have reached out to members of our botany club, but none have responded to our inquiries about the local flora and fauna of the area. one can only imagine, regardless, that life is plentiful in the area, and much more bountiful of the area we know and are so familiar with. a nice change of pace, some students confirm. reviews of the camp have been largely positive, with the only complaints stemming from the unreliability of some equipment and amenities provided by the camp, such as numerous problems with the all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) provided to trek some of the nature trails, which this reporter can personally attest for.

with such teeming wilderness hides many legends and secrets; the area is known to locals as the home of several alleged disappearances, which have been credited to the supposed presence of supernatural beings. water spirits, according to locals in the area, have been reportedly seen in the area surrounding the resort, especially concentrated near the shores of nearby lake salmon. alleged disappearances are also said to be concentrated in the vicinity, with no evidence of foul play reported. the reported disappearances appear to range from young children to elders up to the age of 90.

despite the alleged happenings of the surrounding area, many of our students appeared to have fun relaxing and recharging at the resort, whether that be alone or with each other. many of these interactions were documented and confirmed by several sources, most notably by popular anonymous gossip blogger wooyoo. several allegations of intent was implied by the anonymous blogger, which the seongnam tribune can neither confirm nor deny.

— it’s no secret that joonki takes any chance he can get to snag a date. and honestly ? he was fairly confident in his talent in the field of seduction. after all, he feels he’s had a massive glow-up since his teenage years, and he’d had more than enough practice to make him sure of his skills. but there’s one particular person on the seongnam campus who will hardly give him the time of day - yoo jiah. was it his hair ? his clothes ? his habits ? he couldn’t seem to find out. the most depressing part was that she was friendly enough, but never crossing the line beyond just polite to make him feel like he had a real chance. it was incredibly upsetting to him, as joonki adores all the things that he’s not allowed to have.

it’s only when joonki sends himself into a hopeless slump does joonki come up with his “ genius ” plan. basically snu’s class clown, the boy is known for not being taken seriously, and settles on the idea that that was his problem. maybe he was too childish for her style ? jiah was the kind of girl joonki found himself drawn to - smart, ambitious, confident. but at the same time, very few with those traits would want to spend their time with a lackadaisical jokester like him. so what does he do ? thinks of the most exaggerated idea ever, consisting of flowers, an edible arrangement, a plush animal, and a grinning joonki who’s struggled to catch up with her after spotting her on the quad. the soft boy approach was his very last chance, so it had to work.  “ jiah, wait up ! ” he calls, panting from the many items in his arms. “ incoming delivery, from your’s truly ! ”

tried and tested: bringing your dog with you on a date guarantees you a second date. always. 

junhyung has never met a single person who doesn’t like dogs, much less the girls he asks on dates who’d always end up gushing about how cute his dog is. it’s a trick he has up his sleeve, one that he has no qualms about using. it’s true, his dog is cute, it makes full sense to pick up cute girls with a cute dog, right? besides, his dog does seem to enjoy being around all these girls too, always running around excitedly and yapping cutely whenever junhyung brings her on a date. his flirty ways might have rubbed off on her — sometimes, it feels like she’s even better with girls than he is.

coiled around his fingers is a dog leash, keeping the pooch close to him as she tries to scamper away with passersby and their own pets. dog is a lively and exuberant pup who wouldn’t be able to stay in one spot for too long, especially with the many distractions at the gojong park. he tugs at her leash gently, silently chiding her to wait patiently. at least today, he wasn’t the only one getting a date. she too, would be getting a playdate.

speaking of his date, his face lights up when he notices her and her dog approaching them from a distance away, waving her over to where he was. as she approaches them, he flashes her a wide beam, walking over to lessen the gap between them. “hey, you made it!”

what kind of music do you like to listen to?

“oh.” dumbfounded, he stares at his fingers for some sort of answer. one artist comes to mind, yungblud, simply because he was the last one he’d heard today. “one moment.” pulling out his phone, he quickly scours his latest playlists and notes all the different kinds of songs he’d been feeling recently. truth be told, he uses these playlists less and less as old music take center stage. but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t jam to bring me the horizon as soon as mantra started playing. “apparently a whole lot of alternative rock with a touch of rnb.”

"am i scared of you? i guess it’s only fair to say yes, is it not? but there are different types of fear. i’m not scared of you like i’d be scared of getting mauled by an angry bear. with that, you kind of know what to expect, can see it coming. instead with you, it’s more like being scared of parasites living under your skin. or alien conspiracy theories. is it real? is it not? when will it strike? will it kill me? 

i sometimes think i’m weird but then i look at you and think to myself, ‘wow she’s a different breed.’ how do you know so much about me and everyone else at seongnam? it’s real creepy how you have so many eyes and ears everywhere, all with that pretty little face of yours and the fake innocence act. but don’t get too excited — my fear isn’t crippling by any means. in fact, a fair dose of it is healthy, a little fun even. after all, i know something real juicy about you and your stupid blog too, so it serves as some sort of defense. kind of like mutually assured destruction. real comforting, isn’t it?”

person with the greatest wife potential at seongnam?

“ am I allowed to pick myself? cause obviously it’s me, I’m just waiting for the right girl to come wife me up. if I have to pick someone else... this may be a controversial choice, but I think danbi ( @sgndanbi ) has quite a bit of wife potential. she’s got a good heart in there, and in the very distant future when she’s able to settle down with someone I can see her being devoted to them. or at the very least, whoever marries her wont ever be bored with her around. ”

if you could change something about your past, what would it be?

“nothing! my life is pretty fucking fantastic,” yeeun jokes, shooting the older girl a wink, a kittenish smile on her lips. 

“but,” she continues, her demeanour switching completely to a more serious one, “if i really had to change something, i’d want to study overseas. for high school or university, i don’t know, but just to experience something different. i feel like my whole life has been in korea, i’ve hung around the same people, seen the same faces again and again. and well, sometimes, it just gets boring. but it’s a little too late for that now, so whatever. i’ll just have to make korea fun for myself.”

she stares down at the device in her hands, and back up at jiah, a confused frown upon her lips. when she’d come to her to fix the problems she was having with her laptop, daeun had been happy to do it, seeing as how it didn’t seem like it would take too long to fix, and it wasn’t like she had too much else to do anyway, considering the new semester had just recently started and all the schoolwork had yet to pile up (in other words, not enough time had passed yet for daeun to procrastinate until everything was due the next day). she had taken care of the major issues, but it seemed a miracle was expected of her.

“well, there’s not much i can do about those corrupted files...” she says, her voice dropping off at the tail end of her sentence, clearly indicating her slight annoyance. sometimes it was possible to reverse the damage or at least recover enough parts to piece it back together, but whatever had happened to them had damaged them beyond repair. she shrugs her shoulders with nonchalance, once again offering for jiah to take her item back. “i don’t know what to tell you. those files are lost. hope they weren’t too important to you.”

“I’d consider myself neat.  I can’t stand it when my room is messy, I don’t know how some people can just let things be thrown all over the room.  I put things away, I know where things are, it’s not that hard. It feels nice getting into a bed that was made when you go to get in it instead of all wrinkled up and loose.  I tend to take care in my appearance as well and even the notes I take in class are neatly written.”

to say that taejoo is competitive is a complete understatement. in the realm of investigative reporting and digging up the dirt on some of the most prominent people on campus, he believes he’s the king -- sure, he might still be an underclassman, but he’s an underclassman with a penchant for justice. some might see that as a penchant for chaos, but he disagrees.

( they’re right, though, and he definitely knows it. )

taejoo believes that there can only be one place where news can be circulated and started, and that’s on the seongnam tribune. this wooyoo character, whoever they may be, is a mystery to him -- and it bothers him that that’s the case. it bothers him that he doesn’t know anything about this person, and when he doesn’t know anything, he doesn’t have the power. being the person that he is, taejoo immediately takes it into his own hands, declares wooyoo a rival of sorts, and sets out to discover their identity. will he expose them if he comes to that point? probably, out of spite only.

so here he is, on one of his infamous stakeouts, asking around ( to no avail ) about details of this wooyoo. taejoo spots another person, minding her own business in the food court, and slides in the spot across from her, notepad and pen in hand. without waiting for her to adjust to the sudden change of scenery, he begins. “hi, park taejoo for the seongnam tribune! can i ask you a few questions?”
