Hey, hey! A newbie just arrived on your ask box for a request I'd think would be cool. The Main 6 with an S/O who's a Phoenix. Of course, you don't need to do this if you don't wanna. Ciao!
Phoenixes are one of my favorite mythical creatures, so of course I have to do this! Also, for the sake of the headcanons, we’re going to say the reader has some ability to manipulate fire and can transform into a phoenix :)
warnings: fire, lots of fire
-Damien LaVey-
He was smitten the moment he met you
Because cool fiery bird??? Um, yeah, sign him right up for that
You two are such a power couple, and people can’t help but stare a little at you two. I mean come on, the prince of Hell and his lover with phoenix like abilities? It’s hard not to be a little awestruck
He likes keeping an arm around your shoulders, because he’s proud as hell to be yours and have you be his (and he wants to make sure everyone knows it)
He thinks your powers are the coolest thing ever, so feel free to show off around him
On your own, the both of you are very capable. Together? Basically unstoppable Oh the utter destruction you two can cause…
You’d fit right right in whenever you make a visit to Hell with Damien
Whenever you transform into a full fledged phoenix, you’re more than welcome to perch on Damien’s shoulder
He thinks seeing you fly is so cool, he gets the dorkiest little smirk whenever you shoot up into the sky with vivid flames trailing behind you
He doesn’t tell you, but he actually really likes petting your feathers because they’re very soft and soothing. Still, you can tell how much he likes it
10/10 would help you clean your feathers. They’re kinda like hair if you think about it, so he’d be able to learn pretty quickly and feeling his fingers go through your feathers is very soothing, so you won’t complain
-Vera Oberlin-
Vera’s a woman of taste, so you caught her eye from the start
It took her snakes awhile to get used to you in your phoenix form, but now y’all are chill
She feels so dignified whenever you decide to perch on her shoulder, and looks 10x as intimidating which is very useful for business meetings
I can just see Vera sitting in one of those big office and chairs as she works with a client, and you just swoop in through the window and perch on her shoulder. She doesn’t even react besides reaching up  to lightly pet just under your beak, but you can visibly see the client shrink back in their seat
You have to switch which shoulder your perch on frequently so that the snakes on each side of her head don’t get jealous
Even when she’s not dealing with clients, she likes to have you close because you’re nice and warm while she seems to always be cold
Should she ever need help,,, negotiating with a more unwilling client, your fire abilities and her simple adoration of you make you her go to partner in crime
Definitely buys you expensive clothing and jewelry that goes with your whole fiery aesthetic
If you ever need your feathers groomed more professionally, don’t worry cause your girl has connections
She may not join you in all your antics that you unleash upon the school with your fire, but she’s usually watching nearby with a proud smirk
-Scott Howl-
Woahwoahwoahwoahwoah
He thinks you’re the coolest hottest technically? person ever and gets flustered around you pretty easy at first
But then you two began to bond over your mutual dislike towards having to deal with messy fur or feathers and warmed up to one another quickly
Scott, naturally, finds your fire manipulating abilities to be amazing
And while you do have to watch and make sure he doesn’t actually touch any of the fire (it’s just so pretty like you, so he just forgets!) you don’t mind being able to show off a little
He thinks you look adorable as a phoenix and is always very gentle when he pets you and you’re always certain to return the favor
He likes cradling you in one arm so you can tuck in your wings and rest (and you look absolutely adorable when you do, his heart can’t take it)
His tail starts wagging like crazy whenever you fly because it’s so cool
Whenever you come to his games you’re easy to spot since you stand out from the crowd so much, and he gets the sweetest little smile whenever he sees you
You two are little dorks together but that doesn’t mean you can’t cause your fair share of trouble too. You’ve got fire in your side, and whatever limitations you may find yourself facing, you’ve got Scott plus all his little werewolf buddies to back you up
-Polly Giest-
You two probably met at one of the school’s bigger raves. You had been goofing around with your friends, and decided to liven things up by transforming into a phoenix, shooting up into the air, and sending out a burst of flames that made the night sky look like day for a second
Polly was watching nearby and was instantly head over heels
You two are such a wild couple and absolutely nothing can keep you under control
Polly has so many great ideas to use with your fire or transformations, and you’re all too willing to go along with them
It seems like every other day you two are planning a new party or prank on someone or on the entire school, you got to be ambitious you know
Polly will brag about how amazing her s/o is to anyone who will listen to her for five seconds, especially when drunk
So within like a week of you two beginning to date, everyone in the entire school already knew that 1.) you were Polly’s s/o and 2.) you had some pretty potent fire abilities on your side which was a concerning combination with Polly, but oh well
Always cheers you on when you fly because she’s basically your personal cheerleader for everything you do
And the first time you transformed in front of her she was immediately all over you, basically squealing over how soft your feathers were and how cute you looked
Bad fire jokes from Polly? Yep, they’re a necessity
-Liam de Lioncourt-
A phoenix and a vampire? The whole one person representing life/day while the other represents death/night thing might be a bit cliche in Liam’s standards, but he ignores that since you two are the only vampire/phoenix couple he can think of
Despite being very different, you two communicate with ease and meet whatever middle ground is needed
You tend to favor the day while Liam favors the night, so your favorite time to hang out is dawn or dusk when it isn’t too bright or too dark
When you transform into a phoenix, he’ll transform into a bat so you two can fly around together. He usually doesn’t like transforming, so it’s a big sign of trust for him to do that
Also, cuddling as a bat and phoenix? Adorable
He acts as your voice of reason most times at least that keeps you out of too much trouble
He’s enchanted with your powers, even the simple things you can do with fire. Whenever you decide to use them, even if it’s just playing with sparks from your fingertips, he’ll find himself momentarily distracted as he watches you he’s a softie, you distract him a lot
He found himself lost in thought watching you one day, as he realized how much like fire you actually are. Fire was bright and fierce, but also warm and gentle, much like you though you’re far more beautiful
He only broke away from his thoughts when you caught him staring and gave him that smile that he swears puts the sun to shame in a good way
There are so many over the top romantic gestures he could do with you about you being the day to his night or whatever, but it takes him awhile to work up the guts
-Miranda Vanderbilt-
So after you convinced her you weren’t one of the air people plotting against her family, she was totally chill with you
You two are now the iconic fire/water couple, yay!
Seriously though, it’s actually really cool
You can definitley plan outfits together so that they match in a way. Think like wearing the same outfit, but while your dress is in warmer, bolder tones, Miranda’s is in cooler, softer tones
It’s adorable, and you know Miranda has no trouble affording it
Once she knew you weren’t one of the air people, she was very interested in learning more about your phoenix like abilities
The way her eyes sparkle whenever you work with fire can be a bit… concerning at times, but you can tell she’s impressed
It took her awhile to get used to seeing you as a bird whenever you transformed, but you’ve now become the one bird she’ll ever like
Now, she actually thinks you’re pretty adorable
Always worried that if you fly too high the ever so evil air people will kidnap you and ransom her for your safe return
So she tends to keep an eye on you whenever you go really high up or send a serf to watch you when she can’t
You’re naturally very warm, so she likes cuddling with you or at least standing especially close to you
Sometimes, she’ll just carry you around in your phoenix form and stroke your wings it’s surprisingly soothing

Batman: Dark Knight Rises
Tumblr media
I picked up the BluRay for today’s film, 2012’s Batman: Dark Knight Rises (trailer), shortly after it hit video way back in 2012. I have neglected it to the backlog for so long because by the time I saw it in theaters I overdid it on the caped crusader’s films and needed a break. I say this because to get hyped for director Christopher Nolan’s final Batman film I watched the four Batman films from Burton & Shumacher in the weeks leading up to Dark Knight Rises and our local theater was doing a release day special to watch all three of the Christopher Nolan Batman films in a row which a friend and I did after I got done helping him move earlier in the day. It made for a long day, and while it was an unforgettable experience, it was still spending nearly half a day in the theater and I kind of associated the Nolan films with that memory for a period of time and so I needed a break from them for a bit. Nolan was riding high after the critical and commercial success of his previous two Batman films, so expectations were through the roof for Dark Knight Rises. This picks up in the aftermath of The Dark Knight’s ending where Batman indirectly killed a rogue Harvey Dent, but him and Commissioner Gordon decided to cover-up Dent’s darker half and celebrate Dent as a fallen hero that Gotham needed to absolve its crime dilemma. It is now eight years later and both Batman and Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) have disappeared from the public eye. The first act helps establish a new evil is on the rise going by Bane (Tom Hardy), who quickly accumulates power and establishes a base in Gotham’s sewers that prompts Wayne and Batman both to return to Gotham and meet his biggest foe yet.
Dark Knight Rises introduces a few other new players to Nolan’s films with the biggest standout being anti-hero master thief, Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman (Anne Hathaway). This was my first major exposure to her and she is flawless as Batman’s off-and-on ally. Officer Blake (Joseph-Gordon Levitt) is an up-and-comer for Gotham PD, and is one of the more proactive members of the force to react to the Bane threat and quickly gains trust from both Batman and Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman). Miranda Tate (Marion Cotillard) is trying to become a player in Gotham by establishing a future clean energy source. Upon this re-watch I was flabbergasted I completely forgot about Detective Foley (Matthew Modine) who is an incompetent cop who wants to bust Batman. It would be criminal if they were absent, but Nolan knew it would not be a Batman film from him without the returning affable Batman allies in tech-man Luscious Fox (Morgan Freeman) and his loyal butler Alfred (Michael Caine). I loved the first two acts of Dark Knight Rises. Nolan does a great job at establishing the new characters with Selina taking advantage of her stealth and cunning to keep me guessing which side she is really on and Bane gradually amassing resources and power to become a legitimate threat to Gotham. I loved how it plays off the consequences from the aftermath of The Dark Knight in a big way to set up the present-day Gotham. There is a fine balance of action and exposition sequences that constantly kept me glued in for the next big set-piece sequence. There is the nice gradual build in pacing in the first two hours when there is this sudden shift into overdrive I was never fully able to settle in with to the film’s detriment.
Tumblr media
A nice side-effect from holding off nearly eight years to re-watch Dark Knight Rises is that I recall some negative press from critics on how Nolan’s trilogy wrapped up and I wanted to distance myself from it to go into this again with a fresh set of eyes. The chief criticism I recall was there being not a lot of fans for the voice used for Bane. The Elephant Man-esque voice has been the butt of many Internet jokes in the years since. I will admit, it does not sound all that menacing, but it grew on me throughout the film and that combined with Tom Hardy’s excellent use of body language resulted in it not coming off as a hindrance all these years later. A qualm I vaguely remembered is that even though Dark Knight Rises is two hours and forty-five minutes long, it flies by because it tries to crunch in about four hours’ worth of cinema into that timeframe. This is not knew from Nolan, and as a matter of fact he is usually pretty good at this type of filmmaking and making longer films breeze by with his brisk cinematography in mind-benders like Inception and The Prestige. However, I do not know whether if it was due to a poor script, clashes with corporate officials, budget or filming restraints, but something happened with the filmmaking here that results in many ‘straighten-your-tie’ moments. Minor-yet-pivotal points of the plot happened in a blink-of-an-eye, and there were several points where I found myself rewinding to pick up on some of these little details. This mostly breaks down in the final act where a lot happens in terms of events and time passing by. Bane pulls off a power grab at a football game in a big trailer-pleasing moment (featuring one completely unaware of his surroundings Heinz Ward) while Batman is banished to a mysterious pit. A lot of time goes by while Gotham succumbs to martial law, but the way it all plays out seems haphazard and confusing to keep up with. It felt like Nolan was told he had a half hour to forty-five minutes of cuts to make to keep the film under three hours and he chose the all-important final act to take the brunt of the cuts.
Tumblr media
The last stretch of action also comes off clumsy and rushed. It requires a lot of suspension of disbelief where the seemingly unstoppable Bane established in the first three quarters of the film all of a sudden comes off as easy pickings for Batman and Catwoman. I get the whole ‘Batman does not kill’ edict from DC comics, but this once again leads to Nolan having to find another way for Batman to indirectly kill off a major villain for the third film in a row, but it comes off incredibly weak on-screen. Finally, there are convenient lines of dialogue thrown out for Batman somehow surviving a severe stabbing and escaping a six mile nuclear bomb blast radius…..sorry Bats, but I simply could not buy it. The BluRay has a bonus disc that has nearly three hour of bonus features on it. Far and away the marquee extra is The Batmobile. It is an hour long, in-depth look at the history of the Batmobile from its humble beginnings in the comics and early TV serials, until it started to really pop in the Adam West 60s TV show and evolved into the elaborate designs from the last several movies from Burton, Shumacher and Nolan. They interviewed designers of the cars from nearly all eras, have a great showcase of all the Batmobiles next to each other at a vintage drive-in and it wraps up with a touching tribute by bringing the Batmobile to a children’s hospital. Definitely do not skip past The Batmobile.
Tumblr media
The rest of the extras are divided up into three areas: Ending the Knight, Gotham’s Reckoning and Reflections. Ending the Knight is comprised of about a dozen smaller features mostly highlighting an individual action sequence or set-piece moment and how the production team pulled it off. Gotham’s Reckoning is character profiles of Batman, Bane and Catwoman and is where we see the most interview time of Bale, Hardy and Hathaway. Reflections is only a couple quick features touching on the crews memories from making three films together and putting a bow on their trilogy. I am a sucker for these, and a lot of these are well made and do not come off as quasi-trailers like a lot of other shorter, thrown together behind-the-scenes pieces on other home video releases. From this two hour lot of extras I would say the half hour of character profiles and the Gameday feature detailing the football game bomb sequence stood out to me the most. A superb collection of extra features all around; I would have been bummed with the lack of a Nolan commentary, but he is featured prominently throughout these extra feature interviews so much that it more than makes up for it. I know it sounds like I bagged on a lot of the film, but it is mostly the last act of Batman: The Dark Knight Rises where things fall apart. Again, this is purely speculation on my part, but it mostly boils down to feeling like Nolan being told he had to cut a half hour out of the film and he decided to sacrifice a good chunk of the last act. The strong first two acts combine to make this a quality comic book movie and despite being a couple notches down from Nolan’s previous two Batman films, I would still rank it in the top third of comic book movies all things considered. My Review: ✰✰✰⭒
I read this without realizing it was a debut album. But now I know that and that explains some of the things I noted in the book. I’ll get into that as I go.
The pace was fast. Maybe just a bit too fast sometimes. There were parts that I wanted to be able to slow down and take things in a bit. The characters were pretty well defined and we learned more about them as the story went along. Miranda was rather fearless because she relied on her magical ability to protect her. It also allowed her to become very confident in other ways in addition to the fact that she had unusual and very striking looks.
Archer had become a super powerful being since the “curse” had advanced so far and his body had become so strong and so fast. He was also a nobleman, a baron, and was very rich, so he had the confidence that gave him along with what he got from the other. He was almost unstoppable. There was only one other person he couldn’t best, but his condition was supposed to be some sort of “genetic” condition. I suspect we’ll see him in another book and get his story.
Archer’s aging retainers were amusing. The butler was a sweetie. The housekeeper had a strange way about her. She was so flippant to Miranda. This was one of those areas I would have liked to have seen developed a bit more. Perhaps a more experienced writer would have done so. We were given a peek into the situation, but the door was shut before we really got to see it well. I was disappointed.
The love between Miranda and Archer, her “Ben”, was very sweet. That’s not to say it wasn’t hot, but they were both looking for someone who would just love them. And against all odds, they found each other and survived the solution to the “curse”.
This first book of this series was written in 2012 and there are 7 novels in the series with a couple of novellas as well. Book #7 came out last year, so the author is keeping it going. I am very much hoping that she has grown with her series because I liked her style. Her characters were really good and I liked the storyline she created. I’m hoping the rest of the series is as good. If you have read this series or her other books, please share with me your thoughts.
