◈ 2 1/2 years ago someone that Kenjiro loved dearly took their own life and he was the one to find them (they knew he would be). In their note, they asked that he take care of their dog Runa because he was the only one they could trust to make sure that Runa lived a happy life. He's not one to deny the final wishes of those he loves and so day in and day out he spoils Runa with all the love in the world. She eats the best food. His apartment is filled with her toys. Everyday he’s sure to find the time to walk her- even in between murders :) Runa-chan gets her walkies <3

◈ His apartment is two blocks away from Kyoto Station and yet he still opts to drive everywhere. His car was the first major thing that he bought himself: Imported– German make. Black, sleek & stylish annnnnd it’s pretty much the same car as Hiro’s except it’s a more recent model. What can he say? When he used to chauffeur Arika and Edna around, he fell in love with the car so much he wanted one of his own! Is that a crime??? Fellas, is it a crime to subconsciously mimic every aspect of your crime boss’ slash fucked-up father-figure’s life and want it for yourself? 

◈ One thing that Kenjiro can’t mimic no matter how much he tries is Hiro’s techniques. Kenji is just… not great at forcing out information which is really important for an Itou man. The Itou Clan is NOTORIOUS for torturing and extorting their victims. He can torture someone and he’s come up with a brilliant system that helps pass along information within the torture room amongst Itou men without so much as saying a word so that the victims are none the wiser but the ratio for hurting ops versus getting them to crack is… it hurts his pride. He’s begged Hiro multiple times to let him shadow him but Hiro always insists on being in the torture room alone. He’s never gotten to see it once. He’s convinced that if he could just witness him in action once, he could replicate it forever. 

◈ Kenji gets recognized by random people out in town, women especially because of his club’s reputation but that’s not all of it. Actually, he gets recognized by women more often simply because he frequents cabarets and cabaret clubs– Ah ah, relax- it’s not for the reason that you think. In fact, the purpose is quite self-serving. His club, Reign, operates under the guise of being “members-only” but that’s simply a gimmick to make their attendees feel more self-important than they are. Literally anyone can become a member but the words “members-only” in that location generally scares off the riff-raff with no money. He offers membership cards to popular hostesses who are smitten with him because he knows that they will show up and he also knows that they’re keen to brag that they’ve been given the coveted Reign membership just for being oh so beautiful… He relies on hostesses as a cheap advertising method- word of mouth. Reign often has celebrity “visitors” too and he might ‘let it slip’ which star has reached out to book VIP and let the gossiping girls do the leg work for him. There’s quite a bit of overlap between some of the top cabaret clubs’ clientele and his disco- that’s why!

◈ Kenjiro left home when he was in his early teens due to his mother’s abuse. When the Namikawas took him in (at Edna’s behest) he got to see what a mother’s love could truly feel like and he feels there’s nothing like it. He adores Edna so much he’s almost forgotten what his biological mom was even like. Almost. Culturally, it was difficult in the beginning because he’d never so much as met an American before but once he understood who she was the rest came easy. Even after moving out on his own, he frequently made it a point to fetch her just to take her out on the town for lunch or shopping. He tells her everything– everything. Business and money, women and dating, goals and aspirations. She tried to talk him out of the yakuza life once and for her, he genuinely did consider it but he decided that his sins were far too great. But the thought of having a wife and bringing home kids that could call Edna their grandmother did make him feel all warm and fuzzy inside… As far as he’s concerned, that’s not in the cards for the future head of Itou.

first of all kenjiro/shinjiro is sooooo mf fine bitch omg. he looks like such a player. is he? does he have a partner? CAN I REQURST MORE PICTURES?????? what's his relationship to arika if he has been looking after her? what's their age difference? does he and majima get along?? i wanna know everything about him!!!!!

For each question, I will give you one photo! Be warned, these are unfinished! I still need to go back in and touch up some stuff like clipping and whatnot- so, consider them as wips.

𝐈𝐬 𝐡𝐞 𝐚 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫?

Generally speaking, he is very good with women. Not in a womanizing way but because he is good at reading and anticipating the needs of others- especially so for women and that has put him in some ✨situations✨. It didn't come naturally though. Looking after Arika when she was probably at her most emotional prepared him for a lot of it, I think. He's very thoughtful, open and honest and I think that appeals to the people around him and brings them in. In reality though, he is quite shy about approaching women that he's interested in. I won't lie. He's good looking, charismatic and he has money. There are women left, right and center that have some form of interest in him but even if he were to entertain them- he worries that they're never seriously interested in him. It's just that he has a reputation and people flock to him for that alone... All that said, Kenji is a sweet boy- yes, but he wouldn't mind taking someone to bed.

𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿?

Good news: Kenji is single. Bad news: he's not really looking to mingle. Like I said, there's no real shortage women that are interested in him but as of recent, there's no one that he is genuinely interested in. There was someone but it didn't work out. He took it hard but it's not as if it's discouraged him from trying again. He's just very invested in maintaining his two lives and he hasn't met anyone that he wishes to bring into one of them. Nor is he in any rush to.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗿𝗶𝗸𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲?

Kenji is Arika's first love... In '82, after Kenji maintained his long-standing sobriety, Edna asked for him to move in with them as he really had nowhere else to go and wasn't really able to support himself just yet and he did. In exchange for a roof over his head (and as a test from Hiro), Kenji was tasked with looking after Arika for them. In the very beginning, he was less than happy about having to babysit some, likely spoiled, teenage girl but it didn't take long for him to understand why she needed looking after. She was the target of a ton of racialized bullying and as a half-chinese man himself- he could relate. Beyond that, Kenji witnessed time and time again just how kind-hearted she was-- and was steadfast in his vow to protect her.

Their relationship is one based on mutual respect and love (each respective form of love was different than the other though). For the longest time, he was the only person that she was honest with about the bullying she underwent at school. He took to escorting her to and from school rather than allowing her to walk to the station because he found that she had been getting jumped on the way home by the kids that were bullying her. She didn't even tell anyone. He had to find out by witnessing it- he got out of his car, fought these high school boys, threw her into his car and lectured her about keeping something so dangerous to herself. (I have a script for a lot of these interactions if anyone is interested- I think it would give a lot of context to their dynamic that I can't give without dragging out this answer.)

Arika didn't want her parents to find out because she was terrified of what her dad might have done if he knew and she didn't want to risk the worst happening--- not realizing that she could've been beaten to death one of these days. As much as he hated it, she convinced him to keep quiet about the bullying. ONLY because he thought it would be more dangerous if he lost her trust, knowing then she would go back to keeping everything to herself.

There are no shortage of secrets between the two of them and while he hates keeping anything from Hiro- he's better off not knowing many of them. He's not sure which would have him killed first: Hiro finding about about how Arika saved his life once or how after she turned 19, he found out that Arika was in love with him. Either way, so long as Arika wishes it- he will take each secret to the grave. Even long after Arika left for college, they maintain their promises to one another.

For clarification: Kenji does love Arika but it's not the same kind of love as what she had for him. He isn't quite sure how to explain it but he knows that it's different. He has deep respect and even deeper adoration for her but he has never once looked at her as anything other than the girl he swore to protect. It's not to say that he doesn't find her attractive, rather, he has never looked to her as someone to be considered attractive or not. All that said, even after gently rejecting her confession, they remained good friends.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲?

At the beginning of SOTF, Kenji is 32 and Arika is 23. So, nine years.

𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗷𝗶𝗺𝗮 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴?

HAHAHAHAHAHA WELL..... Okay, so.. Again, starting at the beginning of this story- they haven't met yet. Kenji knows who Majima is but Majima has never heard of Kenji...

However, when they do meet it's under tense circumstances and their first interaction with one another was them brawling. LMAOOO. Majima went to Arika's apartment after not hearing from her and found the door of her apartment slightly ajar. Inside, instead of finding his girlfriend, he found Kenji who he thought was some shady character ransacking her apartment (he was actually looking for something for her). And so- they fought.

The real gag is, Kenji knew exactly who Majima was but wasn't in the mood to bother with introductions after being interrogated like he had been. If you ask me, either Kenji wanted to test this guy or he just wanted to blow off some steam. Either way, Kenji, man, sometimes you can just your words.

After their fight, they do talk like adults and Kenji is able to fill in a lot of blanks for Majima. They do eventually wind up working together during plot relevant stuff but I wouldn't call them friends. In truth, Kenji goes from being neutral to kind of hating Majima buuuuut that goes beyond SOTF and is more The Majima Goro Way territory.

1) did shinjiro take hiro's surname and if he did, why??

2) was the man edna save hiro and why is edna hospitalized?

𝟏) 𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐣𝐢𝐫𝐨 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐇𝐢𝐫𝐨'𝐬 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐟 𝐬𝐨, 𝐰𝐡𝐲?

So, this answer is kinda two fold. Yes and no. Really, the Shinjiro profile should have just that- Shinjiro, because he is not yet Itou. Hiroki Itou is Hiro's original name. It's the name that the Itou Clan was built off of and when he really does die he doesn't want the Itou name to die again. After the yakuza war that "killed him" in the 60s, the family died right along with him and he had to watch as the Itou name was dragged through the mud and made a mockery of. He didn't chose a very good captain before and that was why it couldn't hold up without him.

This time around, with this different operation, he decided that if he was going to choose a captain, it would need to be someone that he could mold into the form of himself. He had no son and even so, the Namikawa name exists so that his home can live independent of him. When he first encountered Kenji, he never intended to bring him into the fold but after some time (and Kenji's insistence) he realized that he had the perfect opportunity to make an heir out of him.

He does genuinely love Kenji and he has become like a son to him. So, when the conversation about grooming Kenji to succeed him came up, he suggested multiple ways for him to carry on his legacy outside of simply heading up the clan and that was to truly become like his son and adopt the Itou name.

To the men in the clan, he is only (Captain) Shinjiro but the day that he becomes the first man that they answer to, and only then, will he become Shinjiro Itou.

𝟐) 𝐖𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐄𝐝𝐧𝐚 𝐬𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐇𝐢𝐫𝐨?

Yes, back in 1962, when Edna was working under-the-table, she was returning to the clinic on foot from making a house call. She heard the ghastly groan of a man coming from some bushes and immediately went to inspect it. That was when she found a shirtless man bloodied, battered and gushing blood from a fresh bullet wound at the side of his neck. It was a messy grazed shot but the only thing life-threatening about it was how quickly he was losing blood. He never would have made it on his own. So, determined to save this wounded stranger, she loaded him into her wheelbarrow and rushed him back to the clinic. Upon seeing his tattoos the clinic's owner wanted nothing to do with him and even told her to "put him back where she found him", terrified that if something went wrong, the yakuza would come after everyone at the clinic. After insisting and even promising to care for him on her own, the doctor agreed to let him stay and Edna genuinely did, singlehandedly, save his life.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐄𝐝𝐧𝐚 𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝?

Edna is in the hospital after suffering from a stroke shortly after being diagnosed with heart failure. In nature, it's less of a hospital and more like a nursing home for recovery.

𝟑) 𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐢𝐬 '𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐲'?

I can't say much unfortunately because it's too integral to the plot but what I can say is, Hiro's actions before his "death" have not been forgotten.

random things about my ocs (and aizawa because why not)

Masato is quite impressive on the dance floor. It doesn't take him long to find his rhythm no matter what is playing. Chances are if music is playing, he can be found gently shimmying his shoulders and nodding his head if he's not already begun to tap his feet. It's funny, he used to be an absolute wallflower up until he reached his twenties. He never would have danced before! Sure, his mom made him dance with her a bit as a kid but the way he feels about dancing now is... different. Though his clubbing days are long over, those nights in Gunma transformed him and although he could've gone without all the drama- he does miss the nights when he could knock back a few with his boys after a long shift and just let the music move him.

Arika has a few scrapbooks now. The hobby originally started as a way to document something more nefarious that she simply wanted to 'keep up with' but she realized that she could do it for other things as well. More wholesome things. With the help of the polaroid camera Kenji gave to her as a gift after she graduated college and her bucket of craft store supplies, she's committed to making the cutest scrapbook imaginable. At any point in time her coffee table has a messy pile of polaroids just waiting to be snipped/taped onto stationary. She's got a perfectly healthy, perfectly normal collection of photos of Goro mixed in the pile. Why do you ask?

Maria was a bit of a coffee snob. It was a pain for anyone to get her to agree to join them for coffee at a café that hasn't gotten her prior stamp of approval. Masato was always the more adventurous of the two of them and he'd have to combat her "Well, I just don't know if I'll like their coffee.' with a "How will you know if it's not good if you never even try it Mãe? C'mon, I know your tastes just trust me'. But even when she reached the counter that didn't mean that she was convinced. She was always polite about it when she'd ask in her sweet, careful but accented Japanese for "a simple cup of hot, black coffee, please." Her son took her to PLENTY of cafés but there were only a handful that she truly liked. In the end, as long as she had a functioning coffee machine at home and her preferred coffee beans were still just a train ride away, she was perfectly satisfied having coffee at home while she watching tv. No, exploration necessary.

Edna has a voice so powerful that she could bring one of the most powerful men in Japan to his knees and quite frequently does- to tears, even. When she sings, her voice comes from somewhere deep within her but it sounds like a million angels are calling out to the room instead and it can leave anyone with goosebumps. When Hiro first heard her sing- he cried. It wasn't just a few tears either, he sobbed. Hideously. She's brought Kenji to tears as well but he knew how to play it off, at least. With each member of her small family spread across the country to live their own lives while she stays in her private care unit, on her better days, there's no one to bring to tears with her song but herself... but no one could ever know that or they'd worry and she can't have that.

Hiro has a private bar room at the Wynn Royale on... permanent reserve, where he goes to unwind after a long day or sometimes entertain some guests of his. Classy place. He's aptly named it The Place so that when it comes up in conversation in front of people who aren't aware- and something major is going on, no one knows exactly what they're speaking of. Only authorized staff are allowed to enter The Place, they may have been employed by Wynn Royale but they only get authorization from Hiro. Naturally, authorization comes with clearance levels. For example, waiters are authorized at tier 1, entertainers are authorized at tier 3 but the bartenders- and there are 3 of them- are tier 5. Things can... happen at The Place and after a signal, the waiter is long gone, and the pianist ushered out, the bartender is prepared to serve more than drinks... Very classy place.

Kenji used to be a glorified errand boy when he was living with the Namikawa's, that was how he earned his Itou stripes. One of his responsibilities required, not driving Hiro around, Hiro had his own driver. Actually, he had to drive Edna and Arika around instead. It was a test and the kid passed with flying colors. After Hiro gave him money for a startup, his first goal was to earn enough to buy himself his own car- one just like the Namikawa car, newer though and sleeker, cooler. Naturally, he did and he hasn't missed an opportunity to cherish that car since... It's become a source of stress relief, even! When he's stressed, a late night cruise with the right cassette and a cigarette or two never seems to fail him. He's no loner though, he doesn't mind good company. Sit in silence or chat his ears off, just don't turn your nose up at his music selection.
