Random Kenjiro Hara Facts #1
Tumblr media
(FULL ART WORK HERE)
Kenjiro gets made fun of for the way he dresses by Hiroshi and the other Itou Clan members a lot. It's all harmless teasing as they know that it's simply because he's playing his role- That of a flashy disco owner, and he played it very well. Almost too well. At some point, even he had to wonder when the style part stopped being simply a role he played and instead, really part of who he was? He was almost too flashy for his own good.
Even for yakuza standards.
After Louboutin's red bottoms came out, he fell in love with them but they were women's heels then. He could never look away when he spotted a woman strutting past him in a pair. No matter what she looked like in them, he was left with the same thought every time.
"I gotta have 'em."
Kenjiro has connections all over the country. It's something he picked up from Hiroshi, making sure to have a 'friend' he can call for anything and everything. You never know when you'll find yourself in a bind that can be resolved with a simple phone call.
He's humble about it (in a manner of speaking) but he's pretty well off for his age. Perhaps he even has more money than he knows to do with? So, he doesn't bat an eye when his shopping rings up for anything over a mil (in bubble yen lol!!). He has no issue buying things but there are some things that money just can't buy. For example, things that don't exist. Unless, you know a guy.
Back then, Louboutin didn't make men's shoes but hell if he wasn't going to sport a pair of red bottoms himself. That's where his dupe guy comes in!
He pays top dollar for absolutely exceptional material and he gets them retouched regularly. He gets a lot of compliments on his shoes and when anyone ever asks where he got them, he simply smiles as he rotates his ankle and says, "They're one of a kind."

5 OC Headcanons: Kenjiro Hara Readyyyyy Go!
special guest; oc edna namikawa <3

cw; mentions of suicide, torture and abuse
Tumblr media
◈ 2 1/2 years ago someone that Kenjiro loved dearly took their own life and he was the one to find them (they knew he would be). In their note, they asked that he take care of their dog Runa because he was the only one they could trust to make sure that Runa lived a happy life. He's not one to deny the final wishes of those he loves and so day in and day out he spoils Runa with all the love in the world. She eats the best food. His apartment is filled with her toys. Everyday he’s sure to find the time to walk her- even in between murders :) Runa-chan gets her walkies <3
◈ His apartment is two blocks away from Kyoto Station and yet he still opts to drive everywhere. His car was the first major thing that he bought himself: Imported– German make. Black, sleek & stylish annnnnd it’s pretty much the same car as Hiro’s except it’s a more recent model. What can he say? When he used to chauffeur Arika and Edna around, he fell in love with the car so much he wanted one of his own! Is that a crime??? Fellas, is it a crime to subconsciously mimic every aspect of your crime boss’ slash fucked-up father-figure’s life and want it for yourself?
◈ One thing that Kenjiro can’t mimic no matter how much he tries is Hiro’s techniques. Kenji is just… not great at forcing out information which is really important for an Itou man. The Itou Clan is NOTORIOUS for torturing and extorting their victims. He can torture someone and he’s come up with a brilliant system that helps pass along information within the torture room amongst Itou men without so much as saying a word so that the victims are none the wiser but the ratio for hurting ops versus getting them to crack is… it hurts his pride. He’s begged Hiro multiple times to let him shadow him but Hiro always insists on being in the torture room alone. He’s never gotten to see it once. He’s convinced that if he could just witness him in action once, he could replicate it forever.
◈ Kenji gets recognized by random people out in town, women especially because of his club’s reputation but that’s not all of it. Actually, he gets recognized by women more often simply because he frequents cabarets and cabaret clubs– Ah ah, relax- it’s not for the reason that you think. In fact, the purpose is quite self-serving. His club, Reign, operates under the guise of being “members-only” but that’s simply a gimmick to make their attendees feel more self-important than they are. Literally anyone can become a member but the words “members-only” in that location generally scares off the riff-raff with no money. He offers membership cards to popular hostesses who are smitten with him because he knows that they will show up and he also knows that they’re keen to brag that they’ve been given the coveted Reign membership just for being oh so beautiful… He relies on hostesses as a cheap advertising method- word of mouth. Reign often has celebrity “visitors” too and he might ‘let it slip’ which star has reached out to book VIP and let the gossiping girls do the leg work for him. There’s quite a bit of overlap between some of the top cabaret clubs’ clientele and his disco- that’s why!
◈ Kenjiro left home when he was in his early teens due to his mother’s abuse. When the Namikawas took him in (at Edna’s behest) he got to see what a mother’s love could truly feel like and he feels there’s nothing like it. He adores Edna so much he’s almost forgotten what his biological mom was even like. Almost. Culturally, it was difficult in the beginning because he’d never so much as met an American before but once he understood who she was the rest came easy. Even after moving out on his own, he frequently made it a point to fetch her just to take her out on the town for lunch or shopping. He tells her everything– everything. Business and money, women and dating, goals and aspirations. She tried to talk him out of the yakuza life once and for her, he genuinely did consider it but he decided that his sins were far too great. But the thought of having a wife and bringing home kids that could call Edna their grandmother did make him feel all warm and fuzzy inside… As far as he’s concerned, that’s not in the cards for the future head of Itou.

An Interview with Yuko Watanabe, Director of BOY SPROUTED 少年、なにかが発芽する - Japanese/English available @oaffpress @ssff_en [#OAFF2022 /SSFF & ASIA 2022]
Boy Sprouted depicts the battle of wills unfolds between a boy (Seitaro Hara) who dislikes tomatoes and his mother (Kanako Higashi) who is determined to make him eat them. Director Yuko Watanabe takes this everyday scenario and channels the boy’s aversion into a fairy tale nightmare aesthetic that is visually arresting and makes the film’s tone hover on the border between horror and bathos.…

Rashomon (Akira Kurosawa, 1950) Cast: Toshiro Mifune, Machiko Kyo, Masayuki Mori, Takashi Shimura, Minoru Chiaki, Kichijiro Ueda, Noriko Homma, Daisuke Kato. Screenplay: Akira Kurosawa, Shinobu Hashimoto, based on stories by Ryunosuke Akutagawa. Cinematography: Kazuo Miyagawa. Production design: Takashi Matsuyama. Film editing: Akira Kurosawa. Music: Fumio Hayasaka. When I was growing up, Rashomon was one of those films like Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita (1960) and Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal (1957) that you had to have seen just to be considered culturally literate. Among other things, it's often cited as the career breakthrough of Akira Kurosawa and his frequent star, Toshiro Mifune. But if there's a key to the success of Rashomon as drama it's the performance of MIchiko Kyo in the female lead. Kyo was the star of another 1950s imported hit, Teinosuke Kinugasa's Gate of Hell (1953), and gave memorable performances for Kenji Mizoguchi in Street of Shame (1956) and especially Ugetsu (1953) as well as for Yasujiro Ozu in Floating Weeds (1959). She even crossed the Pacific to play opposite Glenn Ford and Marlon Brando (in yellowface) in the film version of The Teahouse of the August Moon (Daniel Mann, 1956). The nuances of Kyo's performance make Rashomon work; they keep us guessing whether she was the dutiful wife or the savage wanton. As I watch more and more Japanese film of the late 1940s, '50s, and '60s, it becomes clearer that this was a great period for female actors like Kyo, Setsuko Hara, Kyoko Kagawa, Kinuyo Tanaka, Isuzu Yamada, Hideko Takamine, and many others -- most of whose names are unknown to Americans today. As for Rashomon itself, while it remains essential viewing for the cinematically literate, I don't hold it in as high esteem as I do such Kurosawa/Mifune collaborations as  Drunken Angel (1948), Stray Dog (1949), Seven Samurai (1954), Throne of Blood (1957), The Lower Depths (1957), The Hidden Fortress (1958), Yojimbo (1961), Sanjuro (1962), or High and Low (1963). Rashomon feels arty and remote in ways that those don't.

The YASHA CD Drama, Stage 1; A Long-Awaited Arrival To Our Arsenal
The first thing my beloved collaborator, @toichinagae, told me about when they reached out to me was the existence of the YASHA CD drama. I was very intrigued, as I'd never heard of it before. I knew of the TV drama, in fact I'd archived it a month or so beforehand, but I never knew that there was a CD drama that not only followed the manga more closely, but also featured some anime voice actors that I NEVER would've expected to work on it!
There are two CDs, this post will be focusing on the first one, referred to as "Stage One." This CD was released on March 24th, 2000, and produced by Pioneer LDC(Currently known as NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan.). This drama's screenplay was written by Asami Watanabe(I could not find any information about them online, it seems there is a key animator by the same name, I am unsure as to if they are the same person.), with music by Nobuo Ito.(Once more, there is very little information about them online.)
The cast list, as sent to me by @toichinagae via email, is as follows(I added some notes on notable characters each voice actor has played, just because I find it interesting.):
有末 静:石川 英郎   Arisue Sei: Hideo Ishikawa(You may know him from Doukyuusei, where he played Hara-sen.) Hisako Arisue: Kikuko Inoue(You may know her from Kiki's Delivery Service, wherein she played Maki.) Kyoichiro Amamiya: Kiyoyuki Yanada(You may know him from Perfect Blue, wherein he played Kantoku Nagae Moichi: Matsumoto Yasunori(You may know him from Sk8 the Infinity, wherein he played Joe.) Toichi Nagae: Kenji Nojima(You may know him from Banana Fish, he voiced Eiji.) Takeru Mikami: Takehito Koyasu(You probably know him from somewhere, I personally know him from Jojo's Bizzare Adventure as DIO, and Adam from Sk8 the Infinity.) Ken Kurosaki: Toru Furusawa(You may know him from the '98 Trigun anime, wherein he played Millions Knives.) Major Hodges: Hiroshi Naka(You may know him from Cowboy Bebop, where he plays Jobim.) Yasuyuki Ito: Nobuo Tobita (Unclear on who exactly this character is. This va was in Darling In The Franxx, but I don't think he had a notable role there.) Sei Arisue (12 years old): Miho Yamada(..She seems to have done work for a number of projects that are not appropriate for this blog. More power to her.) (*Note Toichi's voice at 12 years old is currently unknown.)
These CDs are currently untranslated, but you can find the .wav files for both in this drive folder.
I intend on creating youtube uploads for each track, for ease of use to potential translators and general accessibility for people who's devices cannot run .wav's(..if any exist lol.)
More to come soon!!

Hi, it is me! It has been a while since I posted something here, and I know why. Every time I see my deceased cat's picture, my heart feels like it's being pinched. I still love her and would sometimes imagine she comes out of the bushes that she always played in.
Even this morning, I recalled her when feeding her siblings.
The past is the past. And although it could never be repeated, we can remember it. Ironically, the past is the theme I bring up in my current novel, Tiny Memory.
Tumblr media
It's initially a re-write project from two novels I wrote somewhere between 2013 and 2015 with a slightly different plot. The first novel entitled Kiss My Heart, a story revolved around Sakamoto Naoki, who had a crush on his childhood friend Furuta Yuuji, who dated his senior colleague Ueda Kenji. The second novel was Time Capsule, which told a story about Ueda Kenji, who can't stop feeling guilty about the death of his friend Hara Kaoru and for causing Takada Kenta, who is Kaoru's brother, to suffer from amnesia.
Even though Tiny Memory is a combination of these two novels, I ended up excluding Kenta from it because I think his character is much like Sakamoto's.
The reason I came out with this idea is simply because I love a spin-off. You know, it's when the side characters got a story about them and became the major of a series. If you had read Tiny Memory, you'll notice that it included Hasegawa as Sakamoto's friend from middle school and Daichi as his colleague in Mokachino. And indeed, they were born as spin-off characters from the previous novels.
So now, I want to focus on Tiny Memory for a little longer before I move to a story about Hasegawa and Daichi.
Alright, that's all for today. Until then!
