Currently on view at Nucleus Portland in Portland, Oregon is artist Shintaro Kago's solo exhibition of New Works.
Kago was born in Tokyo in 1969. He is a Japanese manga artist that has been working in the field since 1988. He describes himself as kisou mangaka (“bizarre manga artist”), and his work usually features strong satirical overtones as well as themes of grotesque, experimental, and the bizarre. He has published numerous comics and stories in his career, notable among them Super-Conductive Brains Parataxis published in the magazine Weekly Young Jump. In 2014 he also designed the cover for Flying Lotus's album You're Dead!, as well as producing illustrations for each of the songs.

reflection on a weekend in tokyo
the train ride to from kyoto to tokyo was the lowest point in my trip. it’s hard to explain but once we got on the train someone had taken our luggage spot and that just set off a chain of unfortunate events, i ended up going for a stress relieving smoke in the smoking room where i openly cried in front of two old japanese men. the trip had finally gotten the better of me and i called my parents to hear some friendly voices. crying the whole way to tokyo and missing mt fuji as it was under a cloud was definitely the lowest point of my whole trip haha. once we made it to our hotel still with more hiccups along the way that i don’t even want to recall, i ordered two meals on uber eats and promptly devoured them like an animal in my hotel room before passing out. i told my friends who were staying in the same hotel that i needed alone time and probably wouldn’t see them all weekend, this was to ensure that i had time to relax and return to my usual happy go lucky self.
the next morning i went to the omotesando/shibuya area and explored the many cafes and galleries. it was so lovely, i was starting to feel a lot more comfortable in tokyo. i visited anicoremix gallery to see an exhibition by tsunotsuno. he’s an artist that i’ve been following for a long time now and this was his first ever exhibition. it was really inspiring to see an artist i’ve watched evolve, finally exhibit. he was in the gallery when i visited and i desperately wanted to talk to him and tell him how proud i was but i was too shy. i really regret not speaking to him. later i visited laforet mall in harajuku which houses lots of small designers and artist’s creations. i bought lots of stickers and postcards and took lots of photos. i found the whole mall to be a wealth of inspiration. i finished that day with a visit to span gallery, near tokyo station. they were showing a suehiro maruo exhibition, which i was not super interested in however i felt i needed to see it as i was in japan and he is a very iconic manga artist. his work is often disturbing, grotesque and violent which i honestly enjoy. once inside the gallery i gained a whole new appreciation for his work. i’m a sucker for anything monochrome to seeing his original black and white manga panels was truly amazing. of course when i was done i raided the gift shop and bought myself prints of said panels. while i was leaving the gallery, which was tiny by the way, i found a book case full of artist books and merch. i went a little crazy and ended up spending a lot... i got books and merch from junji ito, katsuya terada, shintaro kago and yamamoto takato as well as an artist book from a doll artist who goes by ayumi, i was not familiar with her work until i bought her book and now i’m a big fan.
the next day i explored koenji which reminded me of Melbourne's eastern suburbs in appearance. while there i bought a sterling silver ring with a four leafed clover on it that i’ve been wearing everyday since i got back to Melbourne, praying it brings me some much needed luck. in the evening i had a hair appointment which was lovely, i left the salon with a cleaned up version of my old hair and a whole lot of self confidence, that night i ended up getting dinner with my friends as i finally felt as though i was back to emotional normalcy.

Your art is so amazing, I am in LOVE. What/who inspired your art style? If there were any.
hahaha shoot thank you so much!!! ive been working with MEANBOSS super closely on our collaborative freak comix since 2018 so over time i definitely starting aping off what he was doing & vice versa, i loved his hatching & studied what he was doing with faces super closely cus theyre amazing
ALSO im in my 30s & grew up back when they used to play old ultraviolent 80s anime movies at 6am on the scifi channel on saturdays, & one of my true loves to this day is yoshiaki kawajiri. he directed vampire hunter d bloodlust, bio-hunter, wicked city, demon city shinjuku, cyber city oedo 808, & like 5billion other weird movies with the word city in em LOL. im not a one-for-one copy but if you look at kawajiri's stuff you can absolutely see his fingerprint on what i do! the general influence of gritty weird cybernetics & overall cyber terror before technology became a normal thing to culture at large is also firmly from this era, & it's something i wanna continue to emulate going forward in LOVOS4017.
ALSO another big influence was masayuki taguchi's work on the 15 volume-long battle royale manga which is just about the most alienating & disgusting extreme gore comic you can find, significantly worse than anything uziga or kago is putting out imo. (quick addendum but fuck uziga.) i read this in highschool with my buddy at the time, we used to own different volumes & trade them back and forth during class depending on which one we were missing LOL. my roughs for sad sack had battle royale manga all over it, i LOVE how grotesque taguchi pushes faces, like not one person is pleasant to look at.
ALSOOOO definitely kouta hirano of hellsing fame but only the first 2 or 3 books when he was doing really sloppy inks as i only read the first couple books back in the day & didnt check out the rest of it until years later. my hair movement, inks with white outlines, & every tooth in the mouth thing are straight outta hirano's playbook!
ALSOOOOOOOOO id be a liar if i didnt give jhonen vasquez the credit he's due with johnny the homicidal maniac, hail to the king baby lol. i dont push it as hard as he does, but his stuff gave me total permission to completely shatter skull anatomy in the service of a Bigger More Crazy Facial Expression, & i still use that trick to this day!
there're smatterings of suehiro maruo, shintaro kago, junji ito, francisco goya (disasters of war era specifically), francis bacon, art spiegelman, & charles burns in there as well, but those up there in the list are the big influences! fun fact ive gotten comparisons to the old æon flux cartoon from mtv in the past, but i actually never saw æon flux until like Super recently so i just assume peter chung & i had similar inspirations lmao, like you can already follow the inspiration line pretty clearly with gustav klimt -> peter chung -> jhonen vasquez so i figure i just took my inspo from someone later down the line in that thread lol
ok thats all i got for this question THANK FOR PLAYIN i sincerely love getting the opportunity to talk shop!!!!!!

Hello. I think you have been asked this before so I apologize, but I will be traveling to Japan next year. What are some of the best horror related spots to visit? Haunted houses and yokai are things I am especially interested in.
Sure, I can list a few!
The thing with Japan is that despite how well it serves all sorts of different fandoms, there really isn’t much there for horror fans unless you extend that to include yokai and kaiju. Also, many events in Japan are often seasonal, so sure to see what’s going on about a month before you go. If you’re going in August particularly, expect loads of pop up horror or yokai events! Here are a few permanent attractions… (This is an amended list I’ve posted before with my own photos added).
Hotel Gracery Tokyo & Godzilla Store
If you’re a kaiju fan, the Godzilla store in Shinjuku is a good stop! There are a few Godzilla trinkets in the konbini below too. If you really want to get your Godzilla shop on though you need to head to the Marui Annex which is where the now-permanent Godzilla store is.

Nakano Broadway.
The whole place, but there’s one store on I think the third floor that is 100% ero-guro. Shintaro Kago, Suehiro Maruo, Hideshi Hino, etc, etc.
Tumblr media
Kappa-Bashi.
Basically, a road littered with kappa trinkets and shrines.
Tumblr media
Cambiare
Kind of your typical Golden Gai bar, only it’s based on Dario Argento’s Suspiria! Be aware that you’ll probably have to book in advance as in many of these bars you’ll have a seat eventually reserved for 90 minutes to two hours.
Fuji Q Highland: Saikyo Senritsu Meikyu
The best haunted house I’ve ever been to by a long shot! The route lasts about an hour (depending on how fast you want to get out of course!) and the entire experience is just really fun. You go through in groups of around 3-5 with only one torch between you which can create some really funny moments. From the gory opening movie to the detailed sets, it’s probably the best horror experience I had in Japan. Fuji Q also has Gegege no Kitaro and Evangelion attractions.
Tumblr media
Meguro Parasitological Museum.
Maybe not horror, but a museum displaying various kinds of parasites, it’s weird to say the least, though not very big.
Yokai Street.
This is in Kyoto. There isn’t a huge amount to see unless its one of their market days (which happen once or twice a month), but it definitely has a quaint charm to it. You can pick up some yokai themed food and drink, but be aware that it’s very small.
Tumblr media
Tokyo Joypolis, Odaiba
Usually has around 3 haunted house or horror experiences on the go at any one time. When I went last year the themes were Resident Evil 7, House of the Dead and an attraction about creepy dolls.

Proiezioni, home video e albi presenti in anticipo alla fiera.
Tumblr media

My oversized @shintarokago1969 book is here. The Art of Shintaro Kago Vol 3 by Timeless-Shop. Was a bit of a chore getting it (mail service lost the first copy they sent, and there was much back and forth about not having tracking and my address being considered “unsafe” 🤷‍♂️). But nonetheless it is here and I am very happy with the quality. If anyone has any leads of volume 1 or 2, hit me up. #shintarokago https://www.instagram.com/theyellowdevil/p/BwHp-6dnj6o/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=2cmuc17e2jit

Bookshelf Overload: October 2017
Another month, another mountain of media that somehow made its way into my possession! (Actually, I know exactly how.) Thanks to some fantastic sales, I finally got around to filling in the gaps in my collection of Takehiko Inoue’s Vagabond. I also ended up buying more anime than I usually do, too. In particular, Sentai Filmworks announced back in September that it would be discontinuing DVDs and has since been working to clear out stock. Since my eyesight is poor enough that I don’t usually notice a difference in visual quality between DVD and Blu-ray releases, I took the opportunity to pick up Space Brothers and a few other things at a greatly discounted price. As for October manga debuts, I was greatly impressed by Spirit Circle, Volume 1 by Satoshi Mizukami. I was also really looking forward to the release of Yokai Rental Shop, Volume 1 by Shin Mashiba since I enjoyed the creator’s earlier series Nightmare Inspector. Notably, manga translator and yokai scholar Zack Davisson released a new work in October, too–Kaibyo: The Supernatural Cats of Japan is one of the newest titles from Chin Music Press, a publisher that takes great care with physical production and design, so in addition to being interesting, it’s also a beautiful book.
