You've been yelled at before.
This time around you shouldn't be so fazed by it, right? Plenty of scoldings under your belt, plenty of punishments, plenty of earfulls. It was just another Tuesday to you.
But you stood there in the Tsahík's Marui, contemplating on wether or not you just run for the goddamn hills.
"You" Ronal started, pointing a finger at your face, you stiffened. "Need to stay away, far away, from my son"
"Mother-" Ao'nung began, an argument at the ready.
"-No! I will not hear it!" The Tsahík screeched, rounding on him. "What scandalous acts have the both of you committed under the witness of the night sky?" She dosen't give you time to answer. "I am not oblivious to the little smiles and longing stares the both of you send the other when they are not looking" she stops, circling both you and Ao'nung. "This stops now"
"You heard what she said" Says Jake, leaning closer to you. "Make sure you get it through your skull"
"You!" Says Ronal, pointing at your father this time. "You have allowed your rambunctious child corrupt the thoughts of my son! Eywa knows what kind of nonsense your daughter has been feeding him!"
Your mouth moved faster than your brain. "You're wrong, you know nothing"
"Y/N!" Your mother hissed.
"She is talking back! Has respect not been taught to you girl??"
"Mind your manners, Y/N" Jake seethed, making you grit your teeth.
"It is inevitable, Tonowari" Ronal had exclaimed tiredly, walking up to her husband who had remained silent this entire time. "Our son has lain with a half-breed"
Saying the Marui exploded was an understatement.
"Y/N, is what she saying true???" Your mother wonders, pulling you to face her.
"No! She's lying! We didn't do anything!" You replied, your head reeling.
"Y/N, kid, are you kidding me???"
You were on the verge of crying, trying to get him to calm down. "Dad please, I swear, we didn't do anything! we fell asleep!"
Ao'nung was quick to jump in, constantly at your rescue. "She is right, Toruk Makto, please, nothing happened between us, I give you my word"
"Do not come to her defense boy!" Ronal snapped acidly.
"Mother I do not see why all of this is necessary!" Ao'nung retaliated, turning to her.
"It is necessary because you have been wasting your days following this demon around when you could have been training to be the next Olo'eyktan!" She spat, making you duck your head.
"Your words are like knives to the skin, my daughter is not a demon" Neytiri intervened, practically hissing at Ronal, the expanse of her fangs being shown.
"You lie to yourself" Ronal replies. "You, of all people should know just how much falsehoods leave your mouth everytime you try to defend her true identity"
As she turns to Ao'nung you feel as if a bomb had just settled into its final countdown and you were tied to a chair, far away from it, yet so close at the same time. The greatest common factor? Was that you couldn't do anything to stop it. "This girl is not even real Na'vi! but a human who has been playing the part for far too long, she lies to us all!"
You wanted the floor to swallow you whole.
Ao'nung's gaze was enough to make sure of that.
"Ronal, that is enough" Tonowari finally says, she sends him a glare, he remains resolute.
She turns to the both of you again, instigating more fear into you, the ball in your throat swelling against your own will. "You will not be seeing eachother any longer, you will not be teaching her during lessons, you will not see her after your training, and you will not turn my son against me, that is final"
"What???" You shrieked.
"Mother you are not thinking straight, we can resolve this!"
"It is what needs to be done in order for you to become the Olo'eyktan our people need you to be"
"Whatever this is," says Jake, turning you to face him. "it ends now"
"Dad-!" You tried, your eyes hot, your throat constricting, your chest hurting. "You're really going to take her word over mine???"
He hesitates as you keened, staring up at him, waiting, wishing, believe me, please, i'm telling the truth Dad, believe me. Then something shifts on his face and your stomach sinks. "Enough" He snapped. "Any more and you're done"
Your face twists in hurt, in anger, in confusion.
"I do not wish to see the sight of your daughter's face near my son, ever again" Ronal declared.
"I'll make sure of it," He replies to your horror. "Let's go" says Jake, taking your forearm and practically hauling you away like you weigh nothing to him.
Ao'nung tries to follow you but Tonowari holds him back as Jake pulls you farther out of the hut, he is forced to stand there and watch as you get dragged back home.
When you do, you see the fleeting images of your siblings standing up from their seat before you pull your arm away from Jake's firm grasp, your hair flying everywhere.
"The Olo'eyktan's son???" He asked you condescendingly. "Really??"
"Would you have rather me go for his daughter instead???"
He sneered in disbelief. "You are way out of line"
"You believe the Tsahík's words over mine??? Mine??? " you reiterate, repeatedly pointing at your gut as your voice wavered shrilly. "Are you that goddamn deluded???"
"Well how the hell do you expect me to believe you when all you've been doing is sneaking around behind my back this entire time???" He yelled back, his forehead creasing.
"For Christ's sake we fell asleep!! I- I don't even like him like that!" You stammer, watching him walk past you.
"Jesus, you don't even believe yourself" Jake scorned dismissively.
"It's the truth!"
He whirls around. "Whatever alright???" Jake started. "You gotta learn that this is the consequence of your actions, you go running off with a boy at night??? Coming back home an hour before noon??? You're smart enough! Come on Y/N, you tell me what that looks like!!" He finished.
Letting out a shuddering exhale you frown at him. "You never listen to me!"
"No, you never listen to me! " He bounced back, taking a step forward and sending you a step away. "This isn't a one time thing, you've been acting up since we got here!- Oh who am I kidding?? It's all you've ever done, because that's what you always wanted make things harder for your mother! For me!"
You frowned, trying to hold the tears that threatened to fall as you let in a shaky inhale, boxing your arms in front of your chest as your lower lip trembled.
But your father just kept firing words at you. "D'you know how hard it is to put up with you??? With your antics? Why can't you just be more like Neteyam? Like Kiri?"
This was where Neytiri decided she needed to step in. "Jake, that is enough, you must stop this"
You try and shrug off your sibling's stares burning holes on the side of your head. "Well, fuck, I'm sorry I'm nothing like your perfect children"
"Hey!" He bellowed, making the Marui shake. "Watch your mouth!"
"Well it'll never work because I'm not your real daughter am I??? I'm just some charity case you took up to make you two look like saints!" You shrieked, balling your hands into fists, digging your nails against your palms just to put all your anger someplace else, streams of saltwater falling from your eyes and over your flushed cheeks. "Grace's kid isn't enough, let's allow those orphans from the lab to join our family too, oh poor Y/N's still adjusting with her avatar body, let's take her in too"
"You really wanna test me right now? You tryna get on my nerves??" He warned you. "All that mouth? All that attitude? Let's see where it takes you"
"If we hadn't left the forest none of this would have happened! If we stayed in the village none of this would have happened!"
"You wanna go back to the forest??" He asks you disdainfully before you see him take your drawstring bag, tossing it at your feet, your bow, your arrows, some of the clothes you haven't had the chance to put away yet.
"What are you doing???" You ask him, watching him throw all of your things in front of you, making you cringe and take a step back in fear.
"Drag your ass back to the goddamn forest then! Go! Let's see what happens!" He bellowed, pointing at the door. "You think now that you're such a big girl you can go say whatever you damn well please??? You think you're so big now huh??" He watches as you stood there, sobbing silently. "Come on! Get lost! "
Your face twists. "I hate you!" You screamed, your tears splattering onto the floor.
"You wanna go back there??? Back to the forest where they'll be waiting for you???"
"Better there than to deal with you!"
He lets out a condescending chuckle before he passes by your stunned siblings to collect the rest of your things, throwing them onto the floor. "You wanna leave so bad??? You wanna get killed out there??? Is that what you want??? You wanna get killed over having me as a dad???"
"Maybe I do!" You reply, pride taking over you like a virus.
"Be my goddamn guest kid"
You were exhausted. "You should've just let me drown in that goddamn river!! You should've never let me transferred bodies, you should have just let me died like my mother!!!" You yelled at a dismayed Jake, your throat dry and scratchy from shouting at such an intensity, phantom pains all over your body, your ears ringing.
"Why didn't you just leave me alone???" You wailed, watching just how his face fell. "Maybe then you'd have been the father I deserved!"
You didn't give him a second to even process your words before you stormed out. Running, and running, until you stopped and sat, and cried, letting your sobs let loose into the balmy afternoon air, crying like a mad woman, until your sobs practically dragged its claws up your throat as you let them out. You hadn't stopped crying when your mother found you, she tried wrapping you in her arms but you push her away, sitting on the floor and crying into your forearms placed above your knees as she took her seat beside you.
"I know you feel as if you do not belong with us at times because you think you are not like us, that you do not look like us, but know that I never paid attention to what they told me... that by taking in a Dreamwalker let alone an orphan to raise as my own would make the Great Mother furious" She whispered in such a tone that tore apart every thing you resented about yourself, Neytiri stitching it back up, without asking for anything in return and repeat, it made you feel tired, as an indescribable longing overcame you
Neytiri reached out to brush the hairs that clung to your face from the sweat and the exertion of breaking down, but you took her hand and shoved her away lightly.
What would she do with you, she thought. "You are my daughter, and nothing will change that" She tells you, stroking your hair as you continued to sob. "Not even if my nose looks different from yours, not even if you have eyebrows, not even if we do not have the same number of fingers on each hand"
"You're just saying that to make me feel better" You sniffed. "You don't mean that, you aren't even my real mom, it dosent matter"
Her heart sank. "But it does matter Ma'íte, it matters the most... look at me sweet girl" You look up at her. "you may not have come from me, we may not share the same blood, you may not see me as your real mother but I have not seen you as anything but my sweet little girl... because I know you, I raised you, and I loved you more than I could ever love myself"
You started sobbing even more. This was where you finally allow her to envelope you in a tight embrace, one where you cried onto her shoulder for what seemed like hours, she cradles you even if you were too big to fit on her lap, you didn't complain, nothing seemed to matter, you just wanted your mom.
When you finally pull apart to collect yourself was where she finally got the chance to ask about him.
"So, Ao'nung?"
You grin bashfully, still hiding your face from her. "Shut up"
"I was right, you lied"
"I know, I know"
Neytiri did not like the idea of him and you, but a bitter yet fuzzy feeling of familiarity bloomed in her gut. "Do you feel things for him, Ma'íte?"
You hesitate for a while. You were too afraid to say it, that you've fallen for him, for him, oh Eywa. "It scares me, mom" you gave in, looking up at her with your glassy yellow eyes. "There is this... this burning inside me, I don't know how to make it stop... and he caused it, he lit the fire, now it won't stop burning, it won't stop burning for him"
"It takes great courage to admit what you truly feel, to come to terms with something so difficult"
"I have only ever hated him, I don't know how to..." You stopped, trying to find the right words, looking at your scabbed knuckles in the process. "I don't know how to feel what I feel" you admit pathetically, laughing at yourself as you placed a hand over your eyes, your shoulders rising and falling.
"Your father is right in some things, wrong in others, but we both know you are smart enough to make the decision that will work out eventually" She explains, moving your hair out of your face. "Even if we do give you advice, I know for a fact you will always choose the one you think is best, even if it does mean going against us"
She wipes the last of your tears before she walks off, leaving you alone.
Tumblr media
You were on your way to vist your íkran, seeing as you haven't took her out for a proper fly since you arrived here, you needed to get your mind off of this shit show for a second, flying always did.
Your mind had already delved too deep in what turns and spins you could practice on her once in the air but all that stops when you hear Ao'nung call you from behind. You turn around, almost giving yourself a whiplash to see him standing a few steps away from you.
Your stomach sank to the floor, bitterness and dread eating away what little happiness settled into your mind as you shook your head, feeling your eyes turn hot. "No, no-"
His eyes were glossy and irritated. He had been crying too. "Y/N, I just want to talk to you, please just-"
You bolted before he could even finish his sentence, you didn't think of him, you didn't think of what lied ahead, you kept on running, and running, and running. Even if a stitch formed in your side, even if your mouth turned dry.
He only managed to catch up to you by cutting you off, appearing in front of your path as you had taken a sharp detour towards the forest, knowing you could start climbing the trees to get a higher vantage point and the upper hand on him. But your plans were shortlived when you rammed into him, forgetting to stop at the last second. Ao'nung gripped your arms in fear of letting you get away as you writhed underneath his hold.
"Let me go!!!! " You wail, kicking his legs, scratching his skin with your sharp nails, creating harsh red marks on the surface of his skin. "Let me go you fucking shit! Let me go! "
"Don't make this harder than it already is!" He yelled back, ignoring the strong tug at his heartstrings as he watches you hate him all over again. "Will you just stand still and listen to me???"
Tears roll down your face as you clawed at his arms, kneed him in the groin, the thighs, his knees. "Let me go! Just let me go!"
"No" He replied, his voice uneven.
"Ao'nung, please" You begged, your voice strained. "Just get away from me!"
"You have to listen to me, just listen to me!" He repeated to you like you were a child.
"No! No!" You insist, punching his chest with all your might, it takes everything in him not to double over. "Leave me alone!!! What the hell do you want?!?!"
"You! I want you!" He finally says.
"No! " You shriek at him, shaking your head, quick to deny everything, closing your eyes shut. Almost as if he would just vanish if you wish hard enough. "You don't! You're lying to yourself you don't!!"
"Do you know how hard it is to tell yourself not to want something Y/N???" He boomed making you stand still. "Even though it is the constant thought that runs through your mind everyday??? I fight with myself every day, every single day, because of it, because of you!" He confessed, as you stood there shaking your head, hot tears falling from your saffron eyes.
"When you first came here I was shocked when you did not like me when every other girl here would just laugh and bat their eyes at everything I say, but you? You did not care that I was the son of the Olo'eyktan, it did not mean anything to you" He shook his head. "That was just the beginning, I could not stop thinking about you ever since, you were infuriating, and witty, and compassionate, and I hated that about you, it was only late that I realised that I was falling for you because of it"
"Ao'nung don't do this please" You plead, sobbing. "You don't want this!"
"Want what??"
"You're lying to yourself! You don't want this! You don't want me!"
"I do!" He shouts, taking your face into his hands. "I do want it!" you allow it for a second but you tear his arms away from your face, backing away. "To hell with what my mother says, she is just trying to drive us apart! That is why she insists on the fact that you are not true Na'vi, that just because you grew up around Sky People it immediately makes you one"
"But I am one!" You shout. "I am a Sky Person! My mother was a scientist who was sent to this planet with many others, but when her sister died in the Great Battle she had buried herself in her work and drank her sorrows away, she slept with scientists and pilots who treated her like shit and when she was about to give birth she was on the verge of dying so it was either her or me... and I lived" You bawled, watching him as he stood in silence.
"But I was barely allowed to step outside, I got wounds easily, I got sick quicker, then one night I had fallen into a river and cracked my skull open, they transfered me into an avatar body just like what they did to Jake. I am not Na'vi, but I am far from being a human, I have never met my mother, my father does not know I exist, and ever since that night I have been living a lie" You wept.
"It does not matter to me"
"But it should!" You fought. "Ao'nung no one in their right mind would say such things" You say. "You are delirious, insane"
"If you'd know what I went through these last few weeks you'd be right to call me that"
"We can't do this, Ao'nung" You said, shaking your head regretfully. "Come on, you saw what happened today! What do you think would happen if our parents find out we were together? If- if they knew we'd fallen hopelessly in love with one another??"
Your eyes widen. You shouldn't have told him that.
"They don't need to find out"
"What??" You exclaimed.
"Not if we left"
"Ao'nung-" You began.
"-We talked about this before yes? You asked me if I would go anywhere else in the world where would I go? And I said that I would just leave. What if we left together?"
You open your mouth to argue but nothing came out, instead you sighed in frustration. "Ao'nung we can't do that, you- your family, your sister- my siblings- you have duties to fulfill, roles to-"
"-I never wanted to be Olo'eyktan! you know this! My father and mother would not have it when I had told them-"
"You told them?" You wondered quietly.
"I did, right after you left" He answered, taking note of your expression. "We could do it. We could turn our backs on this place and never return, you could teach me how to ride an íkran and we will travel Pandora"
A faint smile cracked on your face. "It's not that simple, you know"
"We could leave tonight" He insists, making you look up at the violet tinted sky above you. "We could do it, just you and me"
You and me. Him and you.
You wanted to be selfish. And yet you denied yourself.
"We both know we can't" you shook your head. "As much as we want to leave there will always be something holding us down, have you ever been away from water too long? What would that do to you?"
"You have to leave with me" He almost begged. "I want you to leave with me"
"You don't want me, not truly" you tell him. "Look, if you had known I was not fully Na'vi would you still fall in love with me?"
"It wouldn't matter to me, it never would have, whatever you've cursed me with it made sure of that" He says through a wet laugh. "No matter how many times I told myself that you were a freak, an alien, I always kept falling back in love with you, over and over, until I stopped fighting it and allowed it"
And there it was again. That same fire, ever burning, ever encompassing, like outstretched arms encasing your heart in its amber flames.
No. You feel like you were going to hurl. You couldn't watch him like this.
You were quick to turn away. But Ao'nung was quicker than you, taking you by the hand, pulling you back to face him, he dosen't take his hands away but instead threads his fingers through yours.
"Believe me, Forest Girl" He stopped, looking at your eyes, then at your lips, then back at your eyes. "I always saw past it, I always saw you" He says. "I see you"
Your whole chest was on fire, blazing, festering, gleaming.
A smile creeps back onto your face as he wipes your cheeks clear of tears. "I see you too, you skxawng"
Then, wonders of wonders. You kissed him.
And he kissed you back.
At the back of your mind there were a hoard of firecrackers that exploded right on cue, bright, loud, euphoric, oblivion. Unabashedly, this was how you imagined it would feel like, how your lips chased at his, losing yourself in him.
Ao'nung tuned the rest of the world out, all he thought about, all he could think about, was how perfect your lips were, melded to his, he placed his hands on your waist as you placed your hands over his shoulders, he smirks as he had to lean down just to make it easier for you.
You take his face into your hands as the both of you giggled onto eachothers lips, kissing him with everything you had in you, your heartbeat thumping in your ears, the blood rushing up to your face, you felt like you were flying, screw that, it felt even better than flying.
He felt like the wind got knocked outta him, this couldn't be happening. He had his tongue down the throat of Toruk Makto's daughter- that may sound extremely unbecoming and weird but he did in fact- have his tongue down your throat.
You pulled apart first, in need of air, looking up at Ao'nung as your chest heaved.
"Looks like all those breathing lessons did have some use after all didn't they?" He smirked, you waited for a moment before you shoved him, hearing him laugh once more.
Tumblr media
You two had just stuck around for a while, talking, laughing, kissing, even when it had started to pour, you two had just started running around in the rain, throwing mud at eachother, before you heard a horn.
You look at Ao'nung, with mud covering more than half his face and most of his body courtesy of you. "What does that mean?" You ask him.
"They are calling everyone back to the communal Marui"
You slumped subtly. "Do we have to go?"
He chuckled. "I would rather stay here and throw mud at you, you know that, but when they sound these alarms it usually means something of importance"
You sighed. "Fine"
"It is fine" He assures, walking up to you just to tower over you. "When eclipse falls, maybe... you and I could pick up where we left off?"
"I wouldn't be opposed to that" You grin up at him. "Maybe even go a little further" you suggest.
He chuckled wholly. "I guess we'll see"
"Bring some food, lay down a blanket, light a fire, tell some stories..."
He snorts. "That sounds good too, Forest Girl"
You couldn't help but laugh at him. "Don't worry, maybe we can do that too" you say, giving him a suggestive little grin.
He stares at you, appalled, before chuckling. "Don't sound so eager, not when you don't know what I have in store for you"
"Care to give me a hint?"
He hummed, leaning down a little. "I'll let your mind do it for me"
You roll your eyes mockingly, watching him walk past you as your cheeks grew warmer.
You two had washed up by the rocks that had running water pouring down all the way from the top, yet still not quite a waterfall even though how many times you told Ao'nung it was.
When you returned to the village, neither of you thought of letting the other go first to make sure that you didn't arrive at the same time, everyone from the village was there. You and Ao'nung had to squeeze yourself in between them just to get to the middle where you found your families, ultimately sperating you.
Lo'ak places an arm on your shoulder which spooked you. "Baby sis"
"Bro what the hell is happenning??' You wonder, frowning at him before you turn your attention to your father, holding a tracking device in his hands.
"They're here, baby sis" He says. "The Sky People, They've killed Tulkun, they've burned other villages down just a few clicks away from here"
Your face paled. "No-" you shook your head.
"You tell the Tulkun, that if they're hit by one of these they're marked for death" Jake declares to the assemblage, all the furious Metkayina who couldn't grasp the fact that he was going against their ways. "Call for me, I'll silence it. Saving their lives, that's all that matters! Saving your family! "
Tonowari stepped closer to him, looking at his people. "Tell the Tulkun"
And with that all of the villagers dispersed, most of them had started diving into the water, rushing to tell their Tulkun, the rest were getting ready for the inevitable battle that was about to come. You see Neteyam walking past you, realizing he was chasing after Lo'ak ; you were about to follow them when Ao'nung comes up to you.
"Y/N-"
"-Go warn Aiali'i, make sure he dosen't get caught up in this mess, the Sky People are ruthless, they'll stop at nothing, even if it means to harm the great balance just to get what they want-"
"Okay" He nods, taking your words into account.
"You gotta come back to me alright?" You say, almost threatening him. "You still gotta take me out on that date"
He laughed. "What is a date?"
"You know, when a guy and a girl go out, it's just the two of them and they eat and have fun and they kiss a lot... sometimes a little more than kiss"
"Ahh, I see" He hummed, nodding as he understood. "...Will we be the second option?"
As much as you wanted to giggle at that your face remained absolute. "Promise me"
"I promise you, Y/N"
"Ao'nung!" Both you and Ao'nung turn to where the voice was coming from to see Tsireya and Rotxo atop their ilus. "Come on!"
He turns to you. "I will come back, trust me"
"Okay"
You place a kiss on his lips before you turn around, running away. Ao'nung calls for his ilu and dives into the water, joining Rotxo and his sister.
"Rotxo, you owe me a week's worth of fruit" Tsireya grinned.
"I can't believe this is happenning to me" Rotxo says, shaking his head in dissapointment.
Ao'nung rolls his eyes.
Tumblr media
When you find your brothers you seem to have caught them in another fight.
"I'm not you! Okay? I'm not you! " You hear Lo'ak shout. "He's my brother! I'm going!"
"Oh he's your brother?" Neteyam asks, turning Lo'ak around. "No, I'm your brother" He explained, pointing at his chest.
"Lo'ak quit being such an ass, for the love of Eywa" you say, announcing your arrival.
He lets out a disgruntled hiss. "Look i'm going, Y/N, wether you two like it or not"
He dives into the water, making you groan in frustration and follow him too. Hinewai swimming up to you, allowing you to grab onto her neck already knowing she has to follow your brother.
You spot Kiri and Tuk on an ilu. "He's going to warn Payakan! Come on!" You urge, before plunging into the water once more.
You had chased him through a maze of aquatic fauna, dodging leaves and stems, determined to catch up to him. You surface and you see him waving at Payakan who had breached as well.
"LO'AK! COME BACK!" You bellow, just as Payakan swam closer to him.
When you see him hop onto Payakan's back, running around like a frazzled monkey, it hit you. There he was, pulling onto a tracker for dear life.
You sever your and Hinewai's bond and dive into the water, pulling yourself up on Payakan's fin and running up to Lo'ak. "Did you seriously think you can pull that off by yourself?" You ask him, raising an eyebrow.
He rolled his eyes. "You won an arm-wrestling match against me once!"
You snicker. "Eywa, don't be so bitter about it"
"Once" He widened his eyes.
You nod at the other side of the tracker. "Come on! Jimmy it out!"
Lo'ak and you wrap your fingers around the cold metal of the tracking device, tugging at it with all your might, you look up, and you see one of the ships approaching.
"Fuck!" You shout, making Lo'ak look up.
"Lo'ak! Y/N!"
You turn to see Neteyam flinging himself on the back of Payakan like he would an angtsík. "Come on bro help us out!"
Neteyam helps Ao'nung on, who immediately takes his spot next to you. "Hey"
You nod. "Hey"
You see Tsireya hop on, followed by Rotxo. "Hurry!"
Neteyam takes your shoulder, making you face him. "Call it in! Call it in!"
"What???" You shriek incredulously.
"Just do it! Call Dad now! Go!"
Tsireya takes your spot as you move away, pressing your throat comm, landing on the chanel you and your siblings used to contact your dad. "Dad-! I mean- Devil Dog! D'you read me??"
A moment passes by, you press it again. "This is Firecracker do you copy?? Devil Dog do you copy??"
Undeniable relief washed over you when you hear static on the other end. "I read you Firecracker 5 by 5!"
"We're with a Tulkun that's under attack, gunships inbound, it's- it's about two clicks out" You manage, just as everybody behind you started arguing over who wasn't pulling hard enough.
"Who's with you??"
"It's all of us! Ao'nung, Tsireya, and Rotxo too! We're at Three Brother's Rocks!"
Static. "Get to cover. Do not engage alright?? Do not engage! We're coming!"
The line goes silent before you could reply.
"Tie it off! Tie it off!"
"You skxawng what kind of knot is that???"
"Oh move over!"
Lo'ak and Ao'nung's bickering brought you back to the task at hand, you blinked, and it seemed like the ship somehow was just a mile away.
"It's getting closer!" Tsireya wailed.
"Come on! Pull!" Rotxo shouts.
Neteyam ties the end of the rope on his ilu, you dive into the water, tying the excess rope around Hinewai's body and Lo'ak gives you the signal to pull.
So you pull, it seemed almost unviable at first with 6 teenagers and 2 ilus, but you somehow managed to pull it out, sending Lo'ak, Tsireya, Rotxo, and Ao'nung into the water.
"Get out of here!"
"Y/N, give me that" Neteyam ordered, pointing at the pinger in your hand.
"There's no way in hell Neteyam"
"It will be fine!" He assured you. "They are coming- there is no time!"
You give him an infuriated hiss, almost a grunt, before you toss the pinger towards him.
"Go!" Neteyam shouts at the others.
"We'll draw them off, just go!" You say to them. Your eyes meet Ao'nung's, he gives you a knowing look before he dives under the water with Rotxo and Kiri.
"Okay!" Lo'ak replies.
You and Neteyam set off, feeling like torpedoes underneath the water as Hinewai propelled you around the coral and the marine life. Not even 5 minutes later a cannon sets off in the water, disorienting your ilus, Neteyam drops the pinger as his ilu jolts in fear to which you grab.
"I have a plan" you signed under the water.
"No, no plan" He signed back.
You rolled your eyes. "Just let me do this, big brother"
"Fine" He signed half-heartedly.
You set off once more, opposite to where Neteyam was going. Hinewai swims fast, faster than you've ever seen her swim before, another cannon drops and explodes, Hinewai yelps in pain but you tell her to keep going. Only when it started raining cannons was when you were forced to drop the pinger and set out to find your siblings.
You take cover behind coral reefs, making sure you were still hidden when you spot subs in the water, all moving to a consecutive direction. You try and beat them there, knowing that if you followed them then you'd have a good chance of getting to your siblings before they did. Swimming through a forest of aquatic fauna, you tried your best to steer clear of any rays of light, sticking close to the ground until you bump into Tsireya, which spooked her and her ilu.
A loud mechanical whining came from behind you, both you and Tsireya turn around to see a sub coming straight at you, and you two zoomed away. Trying to lose them through the labyrinth of stems, as gigantous leaves constantly slammed you in the face.
"Go the other way!" You signed rapidly. You see her nod and you go your own directions.
Luckily the sub chose to pursue you instead of her, Hinewai made hard rights, hard lefts, almost causing you to fall off. Just then, another sub appears in front of you, blinding you with its stark white light, you don't turn away when it comes straight at you. Even Hinewai was about to bail you assured her to trust you.
Only at the last second did you maneuver her upwards, sending the two subs crashing into eachother, glass and metal flying everywhere, water gushing in their machines forcing them to flee.
You couldn't help but grin as Hinewai swam away.
Only when you spot Lo'ak swimming towards an airbell was when you disconnect your queue from Hinewai and follow him in, taking in a huge intake of air as him and Tuk screamed in fear.
"Jesus!" You exclaimed. "Are you guys okay??"
"Yeah, we are" Lo'ak answered.
"Where's Neteyam??" Tuk wonders.
"I lost him a while ago, we were trying to get the ships off your back, we ditched the pinger a couple miles that way"
Just then, Tsireya appears beside you, and before you were going to ask her if she was alright or not, the expression on her face says it all. "They're coming!"
"Okay, deep breath" you instruct Tuk as all of you dove back in the water. Swimming out of the airbell and away from a sub when another of their machines popped up in front of you, causing you to swim the other way, it was useless without your ilus and you were right. A net traps you, Tsireya, and Tuk. As they try and wriggle out, you fumble with your dagger trying to cut all of you free, and you succeed, you manage to rip a big enough hole open and slide out.
"Tuk come on!" You shout, holding out for her hand before a goddamn íkran dives into the water and grabs the net with its claws, pulling all of you out of the water making you slip. Everybody screams in fear as Lo'ak tries to hold on to you. But he couldn't keep you on and cut the others free at the same time.
"Lo'ak let go!"
"No! Just hang on! Please!"
The íkran dropped the net onto the ship's deck, all of you scrambled to your feet. You throw your dagger past one of the avatars in camo, you manage to slice her forearm open as you pull your biggest dagger out, your ceremonial dagger, swinging it at anyone who dared to come close.
"You little cunt!" The recombinant who you injured hissed, her blood splattering onto the floor. Her expression the last thing you saw before you were forced on your knees and onto the ground.
"Drop your weapon!"
"Get fucked!" You shout, before a large combat boot stepped on your hand, forcing you to let go of your dagger.
"Stop it! Stop! don't hurt them!" You turn your head, and amongst the legs that blocked your vision you see Spider getting held back by a few other humans.
"Y/N!" He exclaimed. "Let her go! That's my sister you fuckers! Let her go!"
"Yeah right" One of them sneered.
"Spider!" You shout in relief.
"Y/N! it's gunna be okay!"
The avatar riding the íkran that plucked you out of the water hopped off his banshee and pointed a finger at Spider. "Get back to the bridge, keep him there!"
Once he turns his focus towards you and your brother ; you hiss at him, bearing your fangs.
"Yeah, I remember you two" He chides, his focus bouncing from you to Lo'ak. "Cuff 'em to the rails, all of 'em!"
You were forced to stand up, you fought back as you were pulled towards the rails of the ship.
"On the ground, come on" The recom behind you says, oddly calm. When you would not submit he kicked the back of your knees, causing you to fall down. When he binds your wrists you reach out to bite his forearm, the recom laughs, as do the others around him.
"Feisty this one" He laughed.
"Told you they bite"
Up ahead, you see about a dozen, no, more than a dozen skimwings round the corner of a boulder. "Na'vi inbound! Spread out!"
"Dad!" Tuk cried.
Quaritch, you asssume, Spider's father who had come back as a recom, tore Lo'ak's throat com off his neck, making him hiss. They do the same to you, making you watch as the recom guarding you dangles it in front of your face before keeping it inside his pocket.
"Jake, tell your friends to stand down, you want your kids back? You come out alone" He spoke. "You know better than to test my resolve"
Just then, you feel the cold metal of a gun against the back of your head, making you flinch and hiss in both fear and anger, your breathing became ragged, you try and shake the gun away but the recom behind you just jabs it deeper into your head.
You knew your dad could see everything.
"I took you under my wing Jake, you betrayed me, you killed your own, good men, good women. I will not hesitate to execute your kids"
A moment passes by, your knees were starting to ache, the gun felt like it was about to go off any second now, like if you were to speak up it would blow your brains out.
"Offer's fixing to expire, what's it gunna be?"
You see a lone skimwing breaking off from the group, the rider, his skin was shades darker than any of the ones he left behind him.
"Easy shot"
Quatitch sets the gun down. "You hit him now they attack"
Suddenly, Payakan shoots out from the water, landing onto the ship, taking down several men. There were a few foolish enough to shoot at a Tulkun, it was almost like child's play to him, dragging his flippers across the deck, sending humans flying into the water, smacking them to death with his fins. He deflects a bomb, causing it to bounce back on the ship and explode. Now that the recoms were occupied with trying to kill the incoming Na'vi, they pretty much left you alone.
You spot your dagger, still lying on the ground in between the chaos, if you just managed to grab it with your tail...
The ship had started moving beneath you before you could even make a move, colliding with a rock formation making everything on the boat to fly, including you, your siblings, and Tsireya. Your dagger slides closer to you but you were too late, it slides past the cracks of the grills, falling into the water.
So you start pulling at the cuffs, knowing it wouldn't work but you would have preferred to die trying.
You watch as two ilus leap out of the water, their riders landing on the boat.
"Neteyam!" Tuk squealed.
"Need some help?" He asks running up to Tuk to cut her cuffs off. You turn to your right to see Ao'nung cutting Tsireya free, telling her to leave, he moves onto you and a grin comes to your face.
"I leave you alone for 30 minutes and this is what happens?" He wonders, digging the knife across the thick cloth.
"I like to keep life interesting, what can I say?" You quipped.
He laughed through his nose, cutting you free.
"Come on, let's go" Neteyam urges. You watch Lo'ak take a gun off the floor.
"What the hell are you doing?" He dosen't answer you. "Lo'ak we gotta go!"
"Spider's still on the ship" He reminds you.
Spider was still on the ship.
"Shit" you groan, you turn to Neteyam. "We gotta go back for him"
Neteyam scratches the side of his head. "Y/N..."
"Neteyam please, he's my brother" You asked. "He'd do the same thing if any of us were in trouble"
He knew you were right. He looks at Lo'ak, nodding. "Let's go"
You run up to Ao'nung who had his spear at the ready. "I'm not asking you to come with us, you don't know him, it isn't your fight"
"No way I'm letting you go again"
"I think I can handle myself" You state.
"Yes, clearly" He says, motioning at the shitshow that was behind you.
"Y/N let's go!" You turn around, looking at Neteyam and Lo'ak about to enter the hull of the ship.
You turn back around to face Ao'nung but he plants a kiss on your lips, a few seconds shorter than what you preferred.
"There, now we are even"
You try and bite down a smile. "Go!"
With that he leaves.
You turn around to face your siblings, picking up an assault rifle from the floor, tossing the empty magazine out and replacing it with a new one.
"On my six" You say, leading the group into the ship.
"When did-" Neteyam whispers to Lo'ak.
"-I wish I knew" He shrugged.
You had ran up and down the ship in search of Spider, scaling the pipes bolted to the ceiling when Neteyam spotted him being escorted out of the ship with a bunch of humans. All 3 of you drop to one of the platforms, waiting for the right moment to ambush them, leaping down the steps. Neteyam first, taking two down with his dagger, next Lo'ak with one of their guns. Spider landing punches left and right, smashing their oxygen masks and flinging them across the ship. One of the humans managed to knock the rifle out of your hands, resorting you to fight with your fists, ripping off their oxygen masks too, and at the last second scrambling to get your hands on the rifle as one of the humans pointed his gun at Lo'ak's head.
Two shots, one to the neck, one to the chest.
He drops to the ground with a thud, you stare at his body, gagging on his own blood, convulsing like he had been electrocuted, until he stopped.
"Baby sis let's go" says Neteyam.
"Y/N, come on" says Lo'ak, taking your hand, leading you out of there.
"Thanks guys" Spider says as all of you run to leave the ship. Lo'ak's ears perk up as he looks toward the distance, you turn your head and you see a couple of recoms pulling their guns out. Lo'ak and you do the same, aiming your guns at them but Neteyam snaps at you to take cover as bullets start raining down.
All 4 of you hide behind a wall, Neteyam shouting at Lo'ak to give him the gun, he starts firing at them as well, empty shells flying everywhere. "Go! Go!" He yelled over the gunfire.
"Come on! This way!" Said Spider, hopping over the rails and into the water, followed by Lo'ak. Neteyam half expected you to follow them but when you started shooting at the recoms as they were reloading he pulls you aside.
"What do you think you're doing??? Go! I've got this!"
"And let you take all the glory? Sure" you reply, ejecting the empty magazine to load one back in, he shakes his head and chuckles before you started firing at them, taking cover when bullets started bouncing off the wall.
You urge Neteyam to go, he hesitates before he leaps over the rails, you start hitting them with everything you could before you abandon the gun and follow Neteyam down, falling rather awkwardly as you feel the side of your stomach start to ache. When you hit the water, flames engulf your body as you struggled up to the surface, trying to catch your breath, only for the bitter stinging to keep you from breathing properly.
"That was insane cuz!" Lo'ak cajoled, high-fiving with Spider.
Tsireya and Ao'nung arrive on their ilus, urging you to hop on. Lo'ak and Spider swim towards them, even you who managed to ignore the growing pain from your torso.
"Come on bro!" Lo'ak says, he and Soider stopped swimming as they looked behind you. You do the same, seeing Neteyam wince and groan, a hand placed on his shoulderblade. You make your way towards him, struggling to keep him upright when you yourself couldn't float properly.
"Bro are- are you okay?"
He spits out salt water from his mouth as he bobbed up and down. "Baby sis I'm- I'm shot"
"Shit!" Lo'ak exclaimed as his face visibly paled.
He and Spider start paddling towards you and Neteyam, it was a joint effort in order to keep your oldest brother from not drowning, they guide him towards Tsireya's ilu, hauling him up and speeding away, leaving you and Ao'nung as he tried to heave you onto his ilu. His eyes widened as he saw your chest, gleaming red.
"You're- you're bleeding" He stammered.
"This- this blood isn't mine, J-just follow them" you managed, trying to keep your wound hidden from him. When the ilu starts to move you feel a surge of nausea wash over you like a tidal wave, you struggle to hold onto his waist as your grip threatened to loosen. Black spots ate away at your vision but you blink at a rapid speed, trying to get rid of them.
Your eyes widen at the feeling of your blood seep past your fingers and drip down onto the ilu's back. Shit. Shit. Shit.
"Keep him up!" You raise your head from Ao'nung's shoulder blade, hearing Lo'ak's cries of distress amongst the fuzziness and the long line of crescendo buzzing in your ears.
"Watch his wound! Watch his wound!" That sounded like your dad, you blinked again and you see all of them on the rock before you, huddled around Neteyam as Lo'ak applied pressure to his wound.
A/N: im sorry about this (then again not really) put your volume up by 4 clicks!
The ilu stops moving, Ao'nung was first to get off and he offers out a hand for you to take like he always did. You take it with your free hand and he pulls you up too quickly, suddenly the world spins off its axis, blinding pain shoots out from your wound as it stretches and widens, your knees buckled and you fall into him.
He staggers back in shock, helping you back onto your feet. His eyes widen as he gets a good look at you, moving your hair away from your eyes, cupping eitherside of your face. "You're shaking Y/N"
You managed to shake your head at him, feeling your teeth chatter. " 'M fine, 'm fine " you mumbled.
Ao'nung should have never let you walk into that ship without him, he knows that now... now that he sees the lower back of his ilu coated with fresh crimson. No.
"No, no, no" He exclaimed eyes wide, and there it was, a shivering hand tightly clasped over a dark red rupture in your stomach. He tried to take your hand away from where it had covered your wound but you would not let him. "Y/N, come on! Let me see it!"
You shook your head, feeling hot streams of tears flow down your face. "Mm-mm" you shook your head. "No" you say.
You were too weak to fight him, he managed to pry your fingers away from your bullet wound, you were bleeding out too fast, the wound had been too deep.
All of a sudden, you sink to the floor, taking Ao'nung with you. "No, no, no, Eywa please" He pleads, choking back on a sob as he struggled to pull you up with him. "Please no, no, not you, not you" He cried, eyes going glossy.
"I can't- I can't stand" you say, before you start coughing and wheezing as he holds onto your hand. "'Nung, 'Nung, don't- don't go, d-don't leave"
"I won't, I won't" He tells you, placing a bloodied hand over your face. "I promised you that remember??"
"What the hell is going on here??? " That was your dad again. It only took him long enough for him to realize you were bleeding your guts out.
Ao'nung was absolutely petrified. "Toruk Makto please- please! she is bleeding out, I don't- I don't know what-"
Your dad scoops you up into his arms, bringing you towards even ground. "D-Dad" You choked, before you dissolve into a coughing fit once more, wincing and crying as it only made you bleed out more. "Dad- D-Dad"
"Shhh, no, no, no, you gotta stay with me baby" setting you down on the rock. Ao'nung almost scrapes his knees, dropping to the ground to hold your hand.
"Fuck" You hear Lo'ak breathe as he and the others crowd you, even Neteyam whose shoulder was coated in his own blood struggled to get close to you.
"We gotta move your hand away from your stomach" Your Dad says, trying to take your hand away from your wound but you wouldn't budge, you didn't want him to see how bad it was. "No!" You exclaimed, before doubling over in pain, your breathing reduced to uneven catch-breaths, hacking your lungs out as it struggled to allow air in, some invisible plug clogging your airways. You couldn't breathe.
"Come on honey, come on, get your hand out of the way please" He practically begged, before you allowed him to take your hand off. You look at his face when he sees your wound. You see his face after he turns you over to see if the bullet went through you or not. It did.
You sniffed back your tears, coughing. "I- I don't- I don't w-wanna die" You sob.
Your dad shook his head. "You're not gunna die, you're not gunna die, just- just hang on! "
The familiar squawk of your mother's íkran was heard. You hear a pitter patter of steps and your mother appears in your line of sight, blurry and beautiful. She wedges herself in between Neteyam and Tsireya, was she shocked? furious? you couldn't really tell.
"I gotta put pressure on it okay?" Your Dad informs you, before two strong hands push down on your wound, you shoot up from your spot, wheezing and whimpering as you tried your best to get his hands away, clawing at his arms, anything to stop him. "I know honey, I know! I know! I know it hurts!"
You choke on your own spit, wheezing in pure agony as he guided you back down on the floor. "I- I- I don't wanna d-die, Da-Dad, pl-please" you rasped, blinking back tears, feeling the weight of the world on your chest, you wanted to stand up, you wanted to go, you wanted to leave, just go anywhere, you didn't wanna die here, not here. "I don't- I don't- wanna die y-yet"
"You won't honey, you won't-!"
"Da-Dad i'm-i'm sorry, i'm- s-sorry" You gasped. "Don't- don't be ma-mad, do-don't hate me"
"I'm not mad, I'm not mad, you don't have to be sorry for anything Litebrite" He shook his head, you look at everybody around you, Lo'ak, Neteyam, your Mother, Tsireya, Spider, Ao'nung, they were all crying for you. "Dad isn't mad- he isn't mad at you, okay? Dad can never hate you"
A tear falls down your cheek. "Da- Dad i'm- i'm tired Dad"
You see him lunge closer to you. "No, no, no, you gotta fight this honey, you're strong! you're strong! You're my strong little lady remember? Remember that? "
"I want to go home" You winced, looking up at the sky as eclipse was starting to fall on you.
"Okay, Okay, we're going" He assured you, Lo'ak and Neteyam nodding in agreement. "We're going right now"
You felt heavy. It was just too immense, too much to carry, you couldn't do it all. You were just a little kid. As your heartbeat slowed down, so did the world, your mind quieted. You look back at your father, a million apologies, a million words you yearned to tell him before the clock stopped ticking, so you opened your mouth, one last thing, you thought, one last thing.
"Dad," you began. "Dad I-"
And then you were still.
They stand and watch the exact moment the words die on your pale lips, your amber eyes dilate and move to the sky, taking your last breath, a shudder, and your heart silenced forever.
"Y/N" Your mother whispered, your name barely rolling off her lips. "No... no, no, no" She says like some broken record. "No! No! Y/N! Y/N! No!" Jake has to hold her back as she wailed your name, over and over, as if it was some incantation to bring you back. She cradles your lifeless body in her arms, all limp, all cold, all quiet. "Oh Great Mother no! Great Mother please! No!"
"Baby sis... come on" Lo'ak urged you, when once before he called out to you, you would run after him and nag his ear off to not pull whatever stunt he was about to do, but now, you weren't moving for him at all. He looks at his hands, drenched in your blood, just like that night by the river, one where he had thought he lost you forever. But no. It was just some sick practice run. Now he knows there was no fighting chance for you to wake up, to come back, not like before. Where he had hoped and prayed for Eywa to answer his prayers, to bring you back. She had listened to him once before but he fears that his pleas were nothing but an incoherent string of words to her now.
Netayam couldn't believe it. If he had just let you go down the rails first this wouldn't have happened. You would have walked away with a gnarly bullet wound on your shoulder, yes, but it was better than having to die from one. You needed to tell your children how you had gotten it, why you had gotten it, you needed to grow old, and die in your bed, not here, not now, not when you were a million miles away from home, from the forest. He failed you again. His mind was flooded with should haves, and could haves, and would haves, that was the worst part, he was pitting the blame on himself, something he always did, something you could never get him to move past. His baby sister once full of mischief and selflessness, gone.
Spider didn't even feel the tears falling down his face until it had pooled under his chin. You two were orphans of the war, you had no one, while also having eachother, it was the irony of it all that kept you two tethered for life. Life. The only border it couldn't cross. Not when you had moved to Awa'atlu with the Sully's, not when he had been held captive by the recoms, but when you had finally died, died like his parents, his human parents, like your mother, possibly your father. He looked up at the sky, at the stars, just like you two would do when you were sick, when you were suffering, lying down on your bouncy mattress in the dark, talking about the most nonsensical things while laughing your little heads off, he swears he could feel it again, how it felt to be in that dark room with just the stars and eachother.
Ao'nung. Oh Ao'nung. That poor little boy who had grown up believing he was going to become a fearless Olo'eyktan one day just like his father, beloved by all, seen by all. For he would be the one who would bind all of the islands together and lead them to a greater triumph, a thousand islands, a stronger nation, a village, a people. But he was wrong, he wanted to be Tsahík, he wanted to heal the sick, to cure the ailing, he has seen how his mother does it, and he wanted to be like her when he was big enough, he wanted to know what rush it would feel once his people come to him, saying they were healed, that they were okay, that he helped them be better.
He had grown up believing that he would fall in love with a pretty Metkayina girl, meek and graceful and refined, with teal skin, curly ebony locks, and aquamarine eyes he would get lost in.
But no. He had to go and fall for a raging wildfire that was you, impetuous, brash, loud, with blazing gold eyes that dare bested the rising sun, braided locks, and deep azure skin, the one that made fun of him, that cussed at him, that pulled a knife to his neck. He never understood why. He never will. Not even when he gets older. Not even when the ends of his eyes start to wrinkle. He never would.
After saving your sisters, you were laid to rest the following night.
Neteyam had given you his rider's mask, remembering when you were younger, when you longed for one even if you had no íkran to tame, it seemed so foolish at the time. Lo'ak gave you his feathered arm band, it was one of the first things you had given him when you started to learn how to weave properly, it wasn't the best work you've done, you were always so shit at weaving but he still kept wearing it. Kiri gave you the friendship bracelet you and her made one stormy night, she had kept yours and given you hers. Tuk gave you her favorite Toruk toy, the toy that had been passed down from one Sully child to another, since you had joined the family so late she figured it was time for your turn.
You were buried with the necklace Ao'nung had given to you. It was the only item of yours they had kept on you.
Ao'nung did not have much of a say when it came to burying you with your belongings like Neteyam did.
Neteyam fought for you to be buried along with that necklace, knowing he was the one that interrupted that moment with you and Ao'nung on the beach.
When it had been time to visit you, Jake took Neytiri's hand in his as they connected their queues to the glowing lilac venules of the Metkayina's Spirit Tree.
Jake flutters his eyes open again. He takes in the distinct amount of trees looming over him, the bioluminescence of the moss underneath his feet lighting up his way into the forest. He was back in the forest.
He notices he was armed with an AK-47, the orange flames coming from the torches of the Omaticayans on direhorses blazing past the gaps of the trees, there was chaos, a scattered chorus of galloping causing the ground to shake. But he dosen't see you.
Where were you?
"Y/N? Y/N?" He calls out, whipping his head around.
No answer.
"Y/N?? WHERE ARE YOU??" He tried again, beginning to walk through the forest, his pace rapidly picking up as he pushes past leaves, past shrubs, he rounds boulders and he still cannot find you. "COME ON Y/N MAKE A NOISE FOR ME, WHERE ARE YOU??"
He was running now. And he remembers, you haven't been seen since this afternoon, Neteyam and Lo'ak had been busy training with the hunting party, Kiri and Tuk were with Mo'at all day, he thought you had been with them, they thought you had been with him.
You've been gone for 6 hours.
He was dizzy, like the world was about to turn on its side and he would lose his balance. "Y/N?? Y/N?? COME ON- Y/N?? I CAN'T SEE YOU BABY WHERE ARE YOU?? JUST COME OUT PLEASE?!?" The forest was just fleeting swipes of colors to him now, branches were scraping against his azure skin, drawing blood.
He hears the subtle crying first, he searches high and low, his heartbeat threatened to leap out of his chest baring his bones and he sees you on the ground, shrouded by the extended leaves, covered by the boulders, shielding you away. Like you had been hiding from something, or was it someone?
He gets low, slinking past the fauna to get to you, he reaches out for your shoulder gently and the sudden contact with his skin makes you scream and leap away.
"It's just me baby, it's just me!" he assures, holding up his palms as the forest stands and watches as if a bomb had been set off, your wails bouncing against the tree trunks. "I'm not here to hurt you, baby- it's just me! see? Just me" you heard him tell you, his arms outstretched, beckoning you to walk towards him.
You try and form a sentence, you did, even if all that left your mouth were a muddled set of murmurs you ran straight into him, dropping to your knees as he embraces you and you let yourself dissolve in an irrational wailing mess. Snot and rears running down your face as you linked your sinewy arms around his neck and refused to let go.
Jake adjusts his position so you were sitting on his lap. "You've been gone for 6 hours- 6! I come back with your mother to find out your grandmother hasn't seen you all afternoon?? What the hell were you thinking??? Running off into the forest?? Do you know dangerous it is out here??? And you decide to stay out here till eclipse??? Do you have a goddamn death wish or something kid??" His voice cracked in anger as he yells at you in fear and relief.
You pull away to face him. "I'm sorry! I'm so-sorry! I was- I was following the woodsp-sprites and I didn't kno-know how to get b-back, I tried u-using the tricks you taught me but it g-got dark, and I heard the- the viperwolves ho-howling-"
Jake's beady amber eyes widened. He grabs your face with his large hands. "Did they catch you??? Did you get hurt???"
You shook your head, your tears falling down to his lap. "They didn't see me"
"They coulda smelled you all the same," He insists. "You were too lucky to have dodged a viperwolf attack, you know how fast those suckers are? no, not yet, But you could've."
"I know" You sobbed, your shoulders jerking up at odd intervals as you hiccuped. Keeping your eyes down. "But I just wanted to show you I could do it"
He frowns softly. "Do what??"
You finally look up at him. "Be a proper Avatar! An Avatar that can run fast and climb fast and jump far," You ejaculated. "I heard stories from Uncle Norm and Uncle Max about when you were still new to your Avatar body, how even if you kept falling off your ass you still kept on going, how you were chosen by Eywa, how you became one of the people and then you became Toruk Makto, and I just- I just wanted to be like you!" You finally shout.
Jake dosen't notice the tears that had been falling out his eyes and down to the apples of his cheeks.
He blinks, and suddenly you were older, defined face, longer limbs. "I- I couldn't help it! All the stories made me feel like I'll never be as good as you, the way that they think I'll become as great as you one day?? I figured if I worked hard enough and I trained hard enough then maybe it'll mean something! And I see it in your eyes everyday that sometimes you wish I could have done more, that I could have been good at archery like Neteyam is or how good at flying Lo'ak is or how skilled Kiri is with healing??"
You grit your teeth, frowning as the tears would not stop coming down. "Everyday I break my back trying to live up to you because I just want you to be-" You stop yourself and hesitate. "I just wanted you to be proud!"
You stop, catching your breath. "I just want you to be proud of me Dad! "
Jake swallows hard and places a hand on your shoulder. "Kid I've always been proud of you, alright?" He manages before another hot tear escapes his eye, realizing now was his time to set things right between you and him. "And- and I know I barely show it, that was on me, It was my fault for not letting you know it sooner, but never in a single second of my life had I not been so proud of the person you grew up to be ; I was too scared to let you know it because I thought it wasn't what you all needed. That if I went all tight with the five of you then maybe I'd choke out the recklessness out of you kids but I was wrong, especially with you"
You were startled.
"I spent my whole life hating my father for not being there to listen to me properly only to turn into the very man I never wanted to become. It was like fighting fire with fire, all this time I had thought it had been working but I was just pushing you farther away from me, I never wanted that"
"-but I'm right here," You tell him in a small voice, grabbing his hand, it was so much smaller compared to his, you were little again."I'm right here"
"I know Litebrite" He chuckles, his shoulders jerking up and down. "I've let you down, I'm sorry"
You swallow the ball that was forming in your throat as you wipe your eyes dry.
"None of this woulda happen if I had just listened to you more, if I had just been there, if I was just better at being a father than a squad leader maybe if I did then- then maybe everything coulda been different"
"Maybe" You shrugged, sniffing.
He points at his chest using the hand you had weaved your fingers through. "The blame's on me honey, this is my fault so just blame me"
You shook your head, teardrops falling onto your lap. "I don't wanna keep blaming you anymore Dad"
And you fit so perfect in his arms as you reached in to embrace him, he did the same, squeezing your tiny frame as he planted kisses on your hair, rubbing his hand on your back.
He remembers why this was how you came to him, why this was the memory Eywa had chosen for him to relive again. It was the first time you had called him Dad.
You hiccuped, wiping your eyes dry with the back of your hands. "I'm sorry Dad"
"You don't got anything to be sorry for kiddo"
You pull away from him once more. "But the Viperwolves-"
"You don't gotta worry about them, I'm here now, alright? I'm right here, I'll keep you safe" He says to you, pulling your hands away to dry your face himself.
"I wanna go home now" You tell him. "Can we go home?"
He couldn't help but let out a wet chuckle, ducking his head as his chest panged with unfathomable pain. "Okay, let's go home"
And so he stands up with you in his arms as he brings you out of the darkness. "So you were out here for the entire afternoon and not a single Viperwolf laid it's claws on you?"
"Uh-huh"
"Must've been scared of you"
You perk up instantly. "You think so?"
He nods. "I know so kid, wouldn't expect anything else from my strong little lady"
You give him a shrewd smile before dissolving into breathy giggles. "I'm your strong little lady Dad?"
"Uh-huh, cuz you've got a strong heart like me and your mom, nothing gets past us"
"If I've got a strong heart then... then I won't be able to die!" You say, lighting up. "Ha! I'm going to live forever!"
He stops walking and gives you a look only to be met by a pair of innocent amber eyes glimmering in the darkness. He forces himself to nod. "You won't die for a long time honey, because Na'vi? They live up to 180"
"180??? No way!"
"Yes way" Jake countered.
"You think i'll live that long Dad?"
He gives you a smile as he senses Neytiri creep up on the both of you, donning a bittersweet smile with glassy eyes. "Course you will, Litebrite" He replies, swallowing the ball that had somehow lodged itself in his windpipe, your eyes like a beacon light in the otherwise dim forest, big and full of wonder, the promise that there will always be light to pull him out of the darkness that dared swallow him whole, your smile alone being able to light the way. His little Litebrite.
"Cool"

a/n: [taps into mic] slipping through my fingers all the time, I try to capture every minute, the feeling in it, slipping through my fingers all the time, do I really see what's in her mind, each time I think I'm close to knowing she keeps on growing, slipping through my fingers all the time...
so I guess that's that, thanks for coming along with me on this wild, depressive, frustrating, sappy, confusing, ride. I had so much fun writing this series for real, not really sure if I'm gunna be writing any more series in the time being but we'll see, til then, make sure to drink a lot of water and take care, mwa :)) 🪼🫧🪸

Im a simple woman
OHHHH bitch, you know I am too!
It's certainly a disappointment to loose that fic, it was pretty well written!! I was hooked from that first little sneaky Ao'nung confrontation and sold from the very solid Jake moment. Great Spider characterization. I love the concept of being in Spider's point of view and feeling so out of place until it culminates in realizing he's been forgetting things. There's also something hilarious about Ao'nung just watching every interaction the Sully's have like 👀 he wants the tea so bad. You all KNOW I love a good Neytiri and Spider moment as well. But of course, no one telling Spider he's being forcefully courted is a favorite too.
But hey, a random and fast religious change is such a fanfiction authors note moment. I personally don't think there was anything sacrilegious about the fic, but I am not the author. It's also very disappointing that it was discontinued because of the polyamory. It's important to differentiate actual Christianity from the latest evangelical hardcore garbage out there that's just an excuse to push ideology. Sorry to any of my poly friends out there, you are valid.
Hopefully, someone will take over the story as the author suggested, perhaps someone who understands poly relationships better.

modern avatar headcanons/scenarios pt 3 because modern avatar is forever in my head. implied(ish) universe where everyone is human but interpret it however u want.
part one here!
part two here!
Tumblr media
lo'ak likes the song asap by stayc. this is so random but i can just imagine him vibing to the song in his room. be wearing a hood over his face and sunglasses even though his room has quite literally never seen the light of day and staring off into space like "😐" while the song is playing in the background like "🫧🌸💕🌈🥰".
ao'nung surfs. this is literally non negotiable. he does.
rotxo is a big brother. i'm pretty sure everyone can agree even though it's not canonically confirmed but that boy definitely has like 2 or three little sisters. speaking of which he'd be sooo good with kids aswell! especially babies.
kiri has a sanrio pfp. probably my melody. and what abt it fr?!
neytiri is very religious. goes to church every sunday and drags jake with her even though that man is a full blown atheist. but i feel like he'd do it anyways without complaints just because he loves neytiri so much.
lo'ak used to post depression quotes on his instagram story but stopped when he got absolutely slammed by kiri and ao'nung when they replied to them. homeboy would post some "i'm so tired:(" and then kiri would slide up like "go to sleep then🤣🤣‼️🙏".
this is a continuation from the previous one but one time lo'ak found out his middle school crush liked neteyam and posted on his snapchat some shit of him listening to juice wrld with the caption "js got my heart broken dhmu." then ao'nung responded with some shit like "who?? THE FUCK ASKED😐😐🤣🤣🗣️🗣️🗣️.
out of the entire sully family i can see kiri being able to tolerate spice the most. she probably loves spicy food actually. and then jake is the worst with it. when i think about it i can see tuk liking spice aswell.
tuk watches those youtube gacha videos. has probably made a few gacha music videos aswell that actually ended up getting quite a bit of attention. she has told NO ONE about it though. homegirl is living a double life.
lo'ak scams kids in adopt me and thinks its the funniest shit ever.
y'all ever seen those videos of that one guy playing magic tiles with their toes. yeah that's actually ao'nung. he does it at family reunions to show his little cousins and tsireya watches with her jaw slack and the most flabbergasted expression on her face from the other side of the room.
neteyams got leds set up in his room. yeaaah bitch has got COCKROACHES behind them leds and he doesn't even know it.
tsireya really likes sweet scents, i honestly see her either smelling like vanilla (victorias secret bare vanilla!! SOOO GOOD) or like ariana grandes cloud perfume (broo that shit smells so good). that girl smells like heaven in a person fr.
kiri crochets. it's literally true. makes her own tops and stuff and they look so good aswell. she's even sold a few little hats and crop tops to tsireya.
during 2020 kiri painted her door a cow pattern and yes she regrets it.
as kids, when everyone was playing just dance kiri was the type of person to put literally no effort into her movements. the girlie is doing the bare minimum and literally looks so bored like "😐" yet she would probably be getting perfect every single time and lo'ak has always loathed her for it since he was the guy to be doing the absolute most. practically bouncing off the walls with his dancing and definitely the one with the most energy out of everyone yet he'd probably come last or something.
btw lo'ak SUCKS at dancing.
neteyam works at mcdonalds
lo'ak and tsireya have study dates where tsireya tutors him because let's be real guys lo'ak is failing all of his classes except for like p.e
spiders the type of guy to walk into the sully household, uninvited, scream "i'm home!" and then ransack all of their cupboards and steal from everyones 'secret' stashes.
tsireya likes anime. i can see her being into like action (bsd or some shit like that, man idk i don't watch anime) or some comedy romance. she probably forces lo'ak to watch it with her, and at first he's kind of resistent because he thinks anime is lame but give him an hour of aot because that boy is literally gonna be so invested afterwards. the next day they gonna have matching hanako and yashiro pfps prove me wrong.
rotxo always gets sick. one drop of rain will land on him and he's out of commission for the rest of the week with a fever. everyone is very concerned by how easily he gets sick.
neteyam on the other hand literally never gets sick. well more like he has too much pride to be sick actually because that man will haul his ass to school even if he's on the crippling edge of death. be walking around school with a runny nose and no voice yet be swearing on his own future grave that he's absolutely fine. man go home.
someone save me i had no service for a full week man🥲🥲 also just watched te matatini SO BEAUTIFUL. i may or may not make a part 4

Tumblr media
"These are ilu, if you want to live here you have to ride "
You turn to Neteyam and Lo'ak, your eyes meeting theirs.
"Don't tell me you're actually scared baby bro" Neteyam taunts, leaning closer to Lo'ak as they pretended to pay attention to Ao'nung teaching them how to properly bond with an ilu.
"Who the hell says i'm scared?"
"He's bluffing" You appended lightnight fast, keeping your eyes on Ao'nung while tilting your body towards your oldest brother.
"Yeah I know he is," He crowed. "I know his tell, his face turns purple and his tail draws zig-zags in the air-" He stops. "Oh my bad, he was just looking at Tsireya"
Lo'ak jabs his elbow against Neteyam's arm as you tried stifling your laugh, slapping your hand over your mouth before it was too late.
"Are you three even listening?" Ao'nung asks, zeroing his eyes at each of you respectively, his eyes lingering on your face longer than you had liked to the point that you had just raised both your eyebrows acknowledging him, he looks away innocently, glaring at Lo'ak once more.
Neteyam looks at him. "Right, yeah, sorry"
"Answer the question skxawng" He maintained.
Lo'ak stepped up, showing his palms. "Look take it easy alright? Don't need to get a knot in your tail so early in the morning"
The blue frog was a few seconds shy from steam leaving his ears and Tsireya quickly notices. "Now that Ao'nung has explained to you all the basics, who wants to go first?" She asks.
Innocently, you shove Lo'ak forward as the rest of you took a step backwards like something tugged at the neurological link that connected between siblings. He looked at all of you standing two steps away from him almost scandalised, betrayed, possibly even outraged.
"Lo'ak!" Tsireya exclaimed happily, clapping her hands as she wades toward him, pulling him to the ilu that had been circling her through out the entire session. He looked back at the rest of you in fear, you and Neteyam silently giving words of support and encouragement as Tsireya pulled him along with her.
"Swing your leg over her body" Ao'nung instructs once Tsireya dragged the both of you a few ways away from the others, you begrudgingly swung your right leg over the ilu's slender body, running a hand over her neck as an attempt to console it from the abrupt weight shift that was you sitting on her back.
You barely even blinked before you hear Ao'nung's tongue check in his mouth. "You're sitting on it wrong"
You whirl your head at him. "I'm sitting on it wrong? " You reiterate, widening your eyes at him in disbelief.
"Yes" He deadpans. "A million possible ways you can ride an ilu yet you ride it as if you're trying to wrestle with it"
You roll your eyes in frustration, but nearly jumping out of your skin when you feel his warm hand on your leg, out of instinct you jabbed your foot against his chest, sending him a few steps back. "What the fuck do you think you're doing? He sends you a sharp look. "Relax Forest Girl, I am not here to violate you" He retaliates boredly. "Put your leg down here, you're not trying to ride an íkran," He began, shifting your leg to a different more comfortable position. "Go and make the bond"
You connect your queues together and a surge of memories wash over you, clear and exhilarating days of swimming in the open ocean, hunting for food, playing in the reefs, the fear of losing her parents to akulas, your stomach sinking as you watched it swim away, the love she had for her children, 5 babies, you felt as proud as she was.
"Now we can finally start by fixing that horrible posture of yours, Eywa Almighty you look like a deformed shrimp"
"Just teach me how to ride the goddamn thing"
"I'm getting there"
You huffed, straightening your back and squaring your shoulders, trying to get yourself used to sitting on an ilu.
"You have to treat her like she is one of your own," Ao'nung tells you, walking towards the head of the ilu. "You must be gentle, slow, treat her with respect, with compassion, and most of all ride her like you care for her-"
You finally slump. "Are you teaching me how to ride an ilu or get it pregnant?"
You heard his hand splash the surface of the water, your ilu baying at the sudden action. "Would the repercussions of murdering Toruk Makto's daughter short of death? because i am going to risk it"
"You talk too much" You tell him with a sour expression.
"You talk too much " He repeats in a tone that you assumed was a crude imitation of your voice.
Your jaw almost went slack if not for your brother, zooming past your peripheral on his ilu. You turn your body around, following his distorted figure until he is thrown off his ilu. You hear Ao'nung rise from the water and laugh as his other friends do, you realize how quickly you missed Rotxo's presence.
As Lo'ak swims back to the group, Ao'nung turns to you.
"Hold here" He says, gesturing to the ilu's gill mantle, you do as he says, adjusting your grip every now and then to see which one could keep you on the longest. "Mind your back, Forest Girl"
You straighten it once more. "Jesus Christ"
His face twists again. "What the hell is a Jesus Christ?" He stops himself. "You know what I do not want to know, keep your back straight and your legs in the same position as they were before or you will be sliding across the beach like a skipping stone"
"You're a real hit aren't you"
"I know" He grinned.
You let out a puff of air as you flexed your shoulders, feeling your back crack. "Y/N! It is your turn!" Tsireya calls out, beckoning you towards her and the empty space where Lo'ak had taken off just moments earlier. You swallowed, telling your ilu to move forward and as she does you lower your head closer to hers. "You won't throw me off will you?"
She clicks and yelps at you, only hoping that was her saying 'no worries pal'
Your ilu who you unofficially decided to name Hinewai, stops at the center of everyone. Lo'ak barely made it past that rock formation shaped like a fang, if you could somehow hang on til then and the way back then Ao'nung could shove that smug smile right up his ass.
"Okay, go!" Tsireya exclaimed.
"Hyah!" You yell, before filling your cheeks with air and descending under the water. It was a rough ride at first but you held onto the gill mantle for dear life while she flailed you around like some ragdoll, your left hand slips, you only manage to hold onto it again after a minute of her chasing some fish through the coral reef, making hard turns, your legs and arms getting scraped by the rocky surfaces of coral. She catches it just outside the small reef and you tell her to bring you up for some air, coincidentally a few steps away from the group.
Neteyam, Kiri, Tuk, and Tsireya started cheering you on as your body broke through the water , Lo'ak a little less considering his twin baby sister just rode and ilu and didn't fall off like he did. On the first try nonetheless, and lastly Ao'nung who didn't utter a peep.
"You were amazing out there!" Neteyam shouts, wading up to you with the rest of your siblings.
"It didn't feel like it" you admitted, almost laughing in the process.
"You should've seen Lo'ak's face when he realized you were coming back still riding your ilu" Kiri giggles, earning a nudge from Lo'ak who simply grinned before trapping you in a headlock and digging a knuckle against your hair, you try and push him off before smacking him in the face which catches him off guard.
"Teyam and Lo'ak were betting on you, you know, they said if you fell then Neteyam gets Lo'ak's chores for two weeks" Kiri adds before Lo'ak slaps his hand on her mouth, passing it off with a little laugh.
"It's true," Tuk says, looking at Lo'ak. "If you did fell Lo'ak gets Neteyam's chores plus a week's worth of yovo fruit"
"Tuk hit her head on the wall before leaving the house, she dosen't know what she's saying" says Lo'ak.
Tuk was about to object before Lo'ak picks her up sideways and blows raspberries on her stomach, bringing her to Tsireya to feed the ilus.
Tumblr media
"Where is your brother?"
"He's down by the beach"
Neytiri frowns. "It is lunch time, very unlikely for Lo'ak not to be here by now"
"He had a big breakfast" You tell her, setting down the basket of fish you and Neteyam managed to catch after riding the ilus. "Near threatened to beat me if I didn't give him my share of banana fruit this morning"
A couple of your siblings chuckle along with you.
"Look, if he's hungry he can come to us, me and your mom have business to take care of after lunch so we gotta eat quick" Jake disclosed, nodding at the empty spots next to the dining table as he himself sat down. Neytiri asks Kiri to lead the prayer and once she was done thanking for the food you've all received and whatnot you started to dig in. Nabbing a piece of fish, breaking it apart, ripping a piece of meat, and popping it in your mouth.
"I heard you all practiced with ilus today," Jake starts, swallowing. "How'd that go?"
"It went okay, sir" Neteyam answers beside you. "Challenging at first but nothing a little practice couldn't fix"
"Good to hear" says Jake.
"Ma'ite, please sit properly" Neytiri says, looking at you. You resist the urge to groan so you put your leg down, your elbow previously resting on it before she spots you from across the table. This was stupid.
"Is that an eyeroll?" Jake wonders almost instantly, your ears flicking down for a millisecond before you look up at him to make sure he was talking to you. Yeah he was talking to you. "No, sir" you reply.
"Better not be"
"Teyam, pass the fish" Kiri asks quietly, pointing her chin at the basket of fish located in between you and him, he hands it to her across the table, watching her lips to mutter a small thank you.
You see your dad break apart a yovo fruit. "How're you all treatin' the Olo'eyktan's children? You nice to them?"
More like were they nice to us?
"Yes sir"
"Great, I need that to remain a constant, I expect the best from all of you alright?" Now that Lo'ak wasn't here his eyes find yours instantly. "Yes?"
A scattered chorus of yes sir's and yes dad's were heard across the dining table.
"Before we make dinner I want you two to help me with repurposing some of Tuk's old clothes" Says Neytiri, she didn't have to look at any of you for you to know who she was referring to.
"Okay" Kiri replies, breaking apart a yovo fruit as well, splitting the other half with Tuk.
"Okay" you say, flipping the fish to its other side to pick at the remaining meat.
You hear the collision of a wooden glass onto the table. "Should we head over?" Jake asks, looking at Neytiri who seemed to have finished eating as well, she responds with a silent nod.
They stand up from the table in unison, going over to wash their hands before they head on out. "I don't want none of you clowning around when we're away is that clear?" You barely had any time to respond before your Dad starts talking again. "Be on your best behavior or I swear you'll never hear the end of it from me"
"Be good, all of you" Mom adds.
"Neteyam, Y/N, up and at 'em " Neteyam stands up straight, straight back, straight face, so do you, though a bit slower than him. "You're in charge as usual, you know what to do once your siblings start upsetting the apple cart, you read me?"
Neteyam gives him a curt nod. "Affirmafive sir, loud and clear"
"Now for you," He says rounding on you. "Don't bite off more than you can chew alright?"
"Aye, aye" You reply, your voice hinting at the slightest almost impercievable tone of sarcasm you so desperately wanted to use.
"Alright, dismissed" and just like that they were gone.
You finally slouch again. "Come on, hurry up and finish your food before they come back"
Neteyam sighed. "Don't do that, you might choke on a fishbone"
"We can just see who's faster at putting away the plates" Tuk suggested, pushing a piece of fish in her mouth she stole from your plate.
"Do you want my fish?" You just ask, she nods and so you ripped her half of whatever meat was left before you wolfed down the rest.
Neteyam downs a glass of water. "Hah! Done!"
"Yeah well so am I!" Tuk combats incoherently, her cheeks full of fish before she swallows it all down.
"We're all done, silly" says Kiri, standing up and bringing her leaf to the sink where she scrapes all of what was left of her plate down the hole, an ilu that was waiting beneath the hut chomping on all of the left overs.
"Tuk go grab the rest of the bowls " You tell her, scraping your scraps down the hole before giving it to Kiri who washed it down.
Once the table was cleared and the dishes were put away you all go out of the hut, Kiri down to the beach to find Lo'ak while you and Neteyam watch Tuk running off towards a group of village children who beckoned her to play with them, not looking back at you any longer.
You turn to Neteyam. "Eywa, I wish it was that easy to make friends here"
He chuckles. "Come on, it's Tuk" He tells you knowingly.
"I wish we were all like Tuk" you sang, sighing greatly.
"They probably just start out really sweet, and as they grow older they turn all twisted and mean, like Ao'nung"
"No" You tell him, shaking your head, staring at your youngest sister slowly turn into a blurry figure as she got farther and farther away from you. "He was dropped as a child, it's the only explanation"
You and him walk along the coastline, enjoying the cold breeze, the warm sun, before Kiri's voice captures your attention. You didn't need to see the look on Neteyam's face before the both of you ran towards the sound. Under the shade of the trees you see Kiri and Lo'ak.
And Ao'nung and his friends.
Neteyam gets there faster than you, turning Ao'nung to face him. "You heard what she said, leave them alone"
You see one of Ao'nung's cronies step up. "Ohh, big brother coming to-" He stops as Ao'nung stops him with a hand across his chest.
"-Back off, now" Neteyam snarled, prodding a finger at Ao'nung's chest. He takes a step back, throwing his arms up in the air to show he concedes.
This man cannot be serious.
"They don't have it in them to hit us, just a couple of lap dogs and their ring leader" You say, siding with Neteyam, eyes landing on Ao'nung who looked like he was about to transform into a plum. "Come on you guys, we're done here" You tell your siblings, walking off in annoyance before one of his friends pushes you back in the circle.
"Don't touch me" You snap, slapping his arm away and shoving his chest backward.
"Hey!" Neteyam bellows, walking up to one of his goofy ass looking friends, staring at every single one of them in the process. "From now, on I need you to respect my sisters, got that?"
So he just resorts to hissing at him. With that, Neteyam grabs your and Lo'ak's shoulders, leading the both of you out of there.
"Ba-bye!" Taunts one.
"Look at them, freaks, all four of them" You hear Ao'nung whisper, your hand started to twitch involuntarily. You turn around to give them a piece of your mind but realize that Lo'ak was already 5 steps ahead of you.
"Lo'ak" you say, abandoning your original plan, sensibility taking over.
He turns to you. "I got this, sis"
"I know this hand is funny," He began, flexing his fingers at them. "Look, I'm a freak, an alien" He tells them as they laughed. "But it can do something really cool, watch, see- you have to ball it up real tight like this, and then-"
BAM. One hit square on the nose.
BAM. another across his face.
BAM. One last, under the chin sending his ass falling down to the sand.
You couldn't help but let out a laugh at the sight, Neteyam and Kiri glaring at you.
"It's called a punch bitch! Never touch my sisters again!" Lo'ak yelled before Ao'nung rams into him. Lo'ak turns him over and punches him once more, the other boys dragged him back by his tail, one of the burly looking ones slapping him hard across the face with his own.
It wasn't fair if you simply stood and watched this right? You needed to put a stop to this.
So without thinking you started running.
Running towards the fight, dragging one of the boys away from your brother by his queue, landing one across his face, dodging a punch from another before headbutting him instead. Someone drags you away by your tail, falling to the sand with a loud thud, you turn to your back and jab your heel against his loincloth, springing back up before one of the boys turn you around to try and land a punch, one to the right, dodge, one to the left, until he just kneed you in the ribs making you double over so that he could finally land a punch to your cheekbone, then another punch to your cheekbone before you grab his fist, turn him around and kick his back, taking another boy down in the process, leaving them to the care of Neteyam who had joined the fight moments after you.
Ao'nung comes at you from behind, sending the both of you down, your head landing hard on a rock sending shock waves through your skull, your temple had started to bleed as you turn him over, landing punches on his nose until it bled, he kicks you off of him, punching your stinging cheekbone, your nose, your cheekbone, then your nose, as static began to fill your vision.
"You hit like a girl!" You screamed at him, struggling underneath his grip.
"So do you!" He shouts back before you try and push him off you, struggling underneath him before resorting to kicking his groin with your knee which worked like a charm, you were on your feet a second later, spitting out the liquid iron taste that filled your mouth. You switched positions, pinning him down which caught him off guard as you tried to land another hit on his face before he got away, you see the look on his face and you couldn't help but laugh.
"Careful, wouldn't want me to think you enjoy being underneath me do you?" You intoned.
Ao'nung's gaze was piercing and vile enough to poison a thanator. "I'd rather pull my spine out of my ass than ever come close to liking you"
With one last punch to his face you scramble towards Lo'ak who had three on him. You pull one away by his tail, dragging him across the beach before punching another one square to the throat, watching him choke and stagger back before you landed two punches to his face, pinning him down, getting lost in the moment and splitting his eyebrow open. The boy was absolutely befuddled, he does everything he could to get you off of him, but to no avail, he resorted to claw at you, causing your necklace to split, beads flying everywhere.
You feel your shoulder turned around by someone, it was Ao'nung once more with another punch to the nose, feeling hot blood dribble out from your nostrils, you pull his arm down, placing a knee on his ribs and finally letting go all of your pent up frustrations onto his face, you weren't even sure if the blood on your knuckles were his or yours.
"All that mouth yet you still can't fight with your fists" He pants with a sickening grin, the dark red patches on his face contrasting with the cool teal of his skin.
Your jaw tightens, forgetting the pain, letting rage take the wheel as you pulled your dagger out of its sheath, raising it up to his neck and watching as the sight of it wipes the cocky grin off his face, his lips parting in shock. "You're right, I don't, but i'm damn sure I can fight with this"
"You won't " He spat.
But you nod. "Oh but I would, I really would"
He tries to get out of your grip, you didn't even have to do anything for your knife to knick his skin.
"You want me to take this off your neck?" You ask, looking at his eyes for an answer, you weren't satisfied on what you got so you deepened your knife against his neck, making him let out a broken hiss. "Don't touch my siblings again, or so help me Eywa I will slit your throat and watch while you bleed dry on the beach then I'll call on my íkran to feast on your scorched corpse" You hissed. "You got that reef boy?"
But he does not answer, instead he stares up at you in silence, the only sound eliciting his lips were the ragged breaths he took, you could feel the rapid rise and fall of his chest against yours, his aquamarine eyes bouncing from every point of your face, almost reading you, until the grip on your knife loosened.
You found yourself reading him too, confusion and frustration making your face twist.
That is until someone pulls you away from him, and at the spur of the moment you almost feel like his hands tried to wrap themselves around your waist before your body was so quickly pulled out of his clutches.
Another boy gave you an uppercut, then another knee to the gut before you pointed your knife at him, sending him backwards. You try and stand up, regaining your balance as you let a grin spread on your stinging face.
"That's it," you taunt, nodding at him, unconciously baring your fangs. "Back up"
One of them tries to make a leap for you but you just do the same, so they hiss instead. Fine, you thought. You throw your dagger through the gap between them, making it's mark on a tree behind them, they were stunned to say the least, it even had wisps of hair sticking out from where the knife met the tree, they look back at you horrified.
You see them run away hurriedly calling for their ilus, Ao'nung being the last as he gave you one last look before riding his ilu.
You close your mouth, tasting blood before you wipe your nose with the back of your hand. "Candy-ass bitch" you mutter to yourself.
You were only brought out from your reverie when you hear the familiar screech of an ikran.
Well, shit
Tumblr media
" What was the one thing I asked? "
You huffed, clutching your side. "Stay out of trouble" you say with Lo'ak.
"Stay out of trouble" your Dad repeats for emphasis.
You see Neteyam stepping forward. "Dad, it was my fault"
"No, I don't think so, you gotta stop taking the heat for these knuckleheads" He snapped, turning to you and Lo'ak.
You purse your lips, hesitating before stepping forward "Dad- S-Sir, Ao'nung was picking on Kiri" You try to explain.
"He called her a freak, they picked on Y/N too!, they pushed her around!"
"Lo'ak you asshole!" You shout at Lo'ak, your temper rising once more.
"Hey!" Jake yells, making you flinch, your ears ringing at the volume nowhere near matching your voice, it ceased another impending argument. "What were you thinking? Neteyam, how could you let this happen?"
"Sir, things just got out of hand"
"Bullshit" He says, shaking his head. "If you had handled the fight early on, if you handled it properly we could've stopped this from ever happenning, do you see that?"
Neteyam nods, staring at the floor.
Jake snaps his fingers repeatedly. "Do you see what i'm talking about Neteyam??"
"Yes, sir" He finally says, seeing his eyes blink like rapid-fire.
"Don't even get me started on the two of you" Jake complains, pointing a finger at you and Lo'ak, swinging like a pendulum, eyes landing on your twin brother. "You hit them first! You never hit- what do I always say? "
"Never hit first or else you're no better than them"
"Exactly!" Jake exclaims. "What did you do? Did you listen to me?"
Lo'ak shook his head. "No"
"No, because you never listen do you?"
Lo'ak's ears droop, crossing his arms over his chest.
Jake looks at you and you look at him, trying to push down any iota of fear you had within you. "Christ Y/N, where do I even begin with you"
"Maybe the part where Ao'nung and-"
"-No, you don't get to talk!" He boomed, rounding on you and you quickly avert your eyes. "You don't get to talk! not after what you said to him, the Olo'eyktan's son! Do you forget who he is Y/N? The chief's son!"
"I get it, Dad" You insist, staring at the floor.
"Another word from you and you're grounded for a week" He threatens. "is this really the shit you wanna pull???"q He asks, shouting at your face as you pursed your lips together, an attempt at stopping the tears that threatened to fall. "You're lucky if the Tsahík ever lets you step a foot on the beach again!"
"Well that son of a bitch deserved it" You said bravely.
"I don't care if he did or not, you are in the wrong, you need to see that"
"Dad, she was only trying to-"
"-zip it" He tells Neteyam. "I expected this shit from your bothers but never from you, never you, now you- you went out there and proved me wrong... what do you gotta say for yourself?"
You remained silent and you heard him hum. "That's what I thought"
His flick upwards to your bleeding temple, your bruised face and suddenly he starts remembering that stormy night. "You pulled a goddamn knife to his neck, Y/N, a knife! Are you insane? "
Your own father calling you insane was worse than any blows you had to endure from those boys.
Neytiri enters the hut, walking up to you. "Ma Jake, she gets it, please stop" She says, placing her hand on your shoulder before you shrug it away harshly.
"That's the problem, she dosen't does she?, she never thinks it through, punch first questions later, isn't that right?" He taunts, looking at you, still maintaining a shit poker face. "I can't believe you" He tells you whilst shaking his head in disapproval, that's when your lower lip starts to tremor and your throat start to to cave in.
"You have no idea how disappointed I am of you" He says to the three of you, his tail swishing in the air in frustration. "Most especially you " He tells you, feeling your stomach sink, your eyes start to fog up.
"Go apologise to Ao'nung, both of you"
"What?" Lo'ak retaliates.
"I don't care how you do it, just go and make peace"
Lo'ak heads out first, walking down the steps and onto the beach.
"So what'd the other guys look like?" Jake asks Neteyam.
"Worse"
Jake nods. "Good"
"A lot worse" You hear Neteyam say as you had your back against your Dad, knowing you weren't leaving the hut to apologise to Ao'nung. Turning towards the forest when you see Ronal and Tonowari out on the beach, talking to Ao'nung's friends and hearing the words "have you seen him around-?" before their conversation deemed too incoherent to decipher.
Tumblr media
Your chest felt too tight, your eyes felt too hot, your back ached, your head was spinning. You had found yourself hiding in a secluded part of the island, surrounded by trees and wildlife, water trickling down the stone formations that stood behind you, birds flee above your warbling and squawking, insects chirping and squeaking.
You covered your ears as you allowed the tears to spill from your eyes, curled up into a ball as you stared into the void.
You couldn't breathe.
The world was moving too fast and you couldn't catch up, your grip on it loosening.
You tried forgetting the words your Dad told you, making yourself believe that they didn't matter because he was just angry and he only wanted to look out for you, but you couldn't, your mind was sealed shut and nothing came in or out.
You were spiraling now.
You couldn't breathe, your lungs felt like they were set on fire
Suddenly your mind started to become loud. So loud that it made you wonder where the sound was coming from, you were alone weren't you?
Was it all just happenning inside your head?
That's the problem, she dosen't does she?, she never thinks it through, punch first questions later, isn't that right?
You remember his voice, how he mocked you, how he taunted you.
Are you insane?
You shut your eyes tight, shaking your head, convincing yourself that this was all in your head.
You have no idea how disappointed I am of you, especially you.
"Stop" you tell the disembodied voice, keeping your hands clasped tightly over your ears "You aren't real, you aren't real"
"Who isn't real?"
You whirl your head at lightning speed, almost giving yourself a whiplash in the process, there, just a few steps away from you was Ao'nung, all battered and bruised, standing behind a stream of sunlight.
You stand up abruptly. "Go away" you tell him, turning around to face the rock formation, wiping your tears away.
He stands there for a moment, just looking at you, seeing the wet trails on your cheeks before you so hurriedly turn away from him. "I'm not here to taunt you, Forest Girl" He tells you.
You hum, turning back around. "I don't believe you"
He stepped forward now, directly into the sunlight, highlighting his bruises the shape of golfballs, his eyes turning into a shade of blue you never knew existed. "Fine, believe what you want to" he sighed.
"Have you come to laugh at me?"
He throws his arms in the air only to have them land on either side of his hips with a thwack. "Eywa, were you not just listening to me talk?"
"I'm afraid I hadn't been paying attention to you at all" you confessed dryly.
He gives you a look. "What are you doing here?"
You shrug. "I like looking at rocks"
"You lie" He muttered.
"No I don't"
"Are too"
"I really like how they're so grey"
He raises his eyebrows at you. "Tell me the truth, Forest Girl"
"I wanted to be alone" You say. "I don't like the beach, I don't like the Marui, I wanted some place where it felt like everything was still simple, even when it's not"
Then, a brief moment of silence.
Ao'nung looks around, there were the trees, the grass, the flowers, the insects, the shrubs, the plants.
"I understand" He says, shocking you to your very core. "You are an outsider, you do not belong here in Awa'tlu"
You couldn't help the snuff that comes out of your nose. "Thanks"
"But my people use this trail often," He explained. "you will not feel at peace here"
You stay silent, thinking about what he said, how he said it, how he's behaving, no signs of hostility, or resentment, his parents have sent him away to apologise to you, that much you know.
"Your parents are finding you, you know" He tells you after a moment.
"So are yours" you tell him, recalling the moment you saw Ronal and Tonowari, talking to his other friends to know if they've spotted him or not. "You should go back"
"So should you" He bounces back.
Then, in the distance, you hear his friends calling for him, both of you turning towards the sound.
"Hey," you say, turning to him. "Do me a solid and don't lead them here okay? I'm too tired for another fight, as much as I want to beat your dim friends to a pulp I can't afford another screwup"
He stops in his tracks for a moment before he nods at you. "I wasn't going to" He says, making your eyebrows knit at the middle. "But fine, don't think I'll let you off so easy next time"
"I doubt you won't"
He turns his head back to the way he came. "I'm here! I'm here! Stay where you are I'm coming to you" He shouts before beginning to push past the overgrown leaves that was blocking the path. It addles you when you see him stop walking. "By the way, i've never met someone, let alone a girl, that can put up a fight as well as you did"
You giggle through your nose, a smile cracking on his face before he leaves you alone.
You didn't apologise to him like your father had wanted but at least it was an entire conversation where not one of you tried to spite eachother.
Tumblr media
You kept avoiding him during lessons which was hard considering Tsireya insists that you and him were a pair already.
So far today was just practicing the transition from holding your breath for long periods under water and learning how to regain your breathe once your ilu leaps out of the water and back again, sticking mostly to your big brother than usual.
Also the fact that Ao'nung and Lo'ak still kept sending death glares to eachother during training was another highlight you've yet to mention, it got so bad that Tsireya had to dismiss all of you two hours early saying that all of your siblings did good, and that you deserved the rest of the day off.
You slap the back of Lo'ak's head. "You're doing it again"
"What do you mean?"
"Quit staring at him, it's distracting" Neteyam says.
"Jesus Lo, just rip off eachother's clothes and hit it in the sack already"
He stood up from his seat, pointing a finger at you. "You're messed up"
You giggle at him as he walks off, you turn to Neteyam who sat beside you, remaining quiet.
"Is dad talking to you yet?"
You shook your head, brushing sand off your feet as you and him sit by the roots. "No, I doubt he ever will"
"Chin up baby sis" He tells you, hooking an arm around your shoulder, shaking you gently. "It has only been two days, I'm sure he will come around"
"If it was you maybe" you tell him before squinting at the beach, watching the whitecaps forming in the horizon. "You and Lo'ak have Dad, say what you want but I know Dad always wanted two boys, Mom has Kiri and Tuk, me, I'm just... I'm not like you, 'Teyam" You found yourself saying, looking at him now. "I cheated my way out of death, became an Avatar, Kiri and I aren't your siblings by blood but at least she was born Na'vi-"
"-It dosen't seem that different to me" Neteyam interrupted you. "I always saw you as my sister, even if you only reached up to my waist when we were kids, even if you had no tail, no fangs, none of that mattered to me... so what if you look a little different now? You've always been Y/N, you've always been my little sister"
Silence ensues as the wind blew in from the sea.
"Shit Neteyam" You finally laugh, looking at the tree tops above you so that the tears that threatened to brim your eyes would somehow fall back in. "It's only 4 pm, damn you"
He cackles, pulling you closer to him until you finally just scoot over, resting your head on his shoulder. Watching the swell of the waves, lapping up at the sand before falling back into the ocean, watching as fishermen cast their nets into the water, children swimming after eachother, hearing the faint yelps of ilus in the background.
You sit there for a few minutes, possibly even half an hour, before Neteyam stands up saying he'll go check up on Kiri and Tuk and see if their Marui was still standing, and with that you are left to your own devices. You begin to hate the quiet and so you stand up and start walking into the lush fauna Awa'atlu had to offer, dancing past moss covered rocks, avoiding skittish insects crawling about. You hear a twig snap behind you, your ears perk up, and a cold feeling washes over your back, your fingers wrap themselves around the hilt of your dagger as you began walking deeper into the forest, staying light on your feet as you hear the rustling grow louder.
You swerve behind a waterfall and start running, slipping in and out of trees, ducking over overgrown branches until you bump into a teal wall of flesh, the impact was so hard you practically bounced off of eachother.
"What the hell do you think you're trying to pull?"
Ao'nung shows you his palms. "Take it easy, no need to get angry again"
"Were you the one following me?" You pressed.
"Yes, until you started running which made me have to run after you"
You abandon your fighting stance, standing up straighter. "Is this some sick joke?"
You see him scratch the side of his mouth. "I realized I never apologised to you... for- for the fight"
"I thought you'd have forgotten it by now"
"Pretty hard not to" He laughed. "I got an earful once I came back home, couldn't stop thinking about it ever since, I even lost sleep because of it"
"My deepest sympathies" You droned.
"I guess I just wanna say that I am sorry" Ao'nung mutters. "For hitting you"
You nod, biting the inside of your cheek as you look around, hearing yourself up for an apology. "I'm sorry too... for hitting you, i'm sorry that you deserved it, i hoped it hurt"
He blinked.
"Also sorry for calling you all those names, sorry for talking about you behind your back, sorry for shit talking you in front of my parents-"
He stops you with his hand. "-what?"
"Yeah"
"Fine, apology accepted" He replied gruffly, half-shrugging. "Now come on, I want to show you something"
"Like hell i'm going to follow you anywhere"
"I'm not going to murder you if that's what you're so worried about"
"Why don't I believe you?" You sassed, raising a lone eyebrow at him.
"I never asked you to believe, I only want you to trust me"
It made you think. "If I trust you, I need to believe that you won't cause me any harm, to trust is to believe"
"It works both ways Forest Girl" you could tell he was getting tired of your technicality.
Huh. "I suppose you are right"
"Are you coming or not?" He calls after you, already several steps away.
You follow him in silence, praying to Eywa he was being true to his word and was not in fact leading you to your death. The pair of you finally reach the end of the forest, a secluded beach, you see him walk all the way to the edge of the water where he called on his ilu, urging you to do the same. You called on Hinewai and you saddled her waiting for further instructions from Ao'nung, when he starts moving forward so do you, when he stops by a huge rock formation covered with palm trees and lush flowers you stop too.
"We have to swim from this point forward" He tells you, jumping off his ilu and sending it off.
You cautiously jump off yours, making a splash as your body hit the water. "I will even race you" He says.
"What are we, 10?"
He half-shrugs, giving you a boyish smile. "Take it as a practice drill"
He dives down and so do you, following him deeper, and deeper also while trying to beat him there, wherever there was. The huge rock formation had stretched down farther than you had hoped, when you spot the hole and watched Ao'ning swim inside, you were having second thoughts about following him in, but your competitiveness took over you and you pursued him, swimming faster so that you could catch up to him. He began swimming upwards, and so do you, propelling yourself as quick as you could so that you'd be head to head, your chest was starting to tighten again and you felt like his was as well, so it was a race to the top.
After what felt like hours you resurfaced and took a huge intake of breath, beating Ao'nung by mere seconds.
"Hah! Take that!" You exclaimed, hooting and cackling as your laughter bounces off the walls of the cave which were covered in bioluminescent bugs resembling Teylu, casting the cave in a soft blueish hue.
"Where are you??" He asks, whirling his head around.
"I'm right here dumbass!" You say, splashing the water which catches his attention.
He laughed loud, wiping his face of water. "I can't see a thing! Can you see?"
You giggled, throwing your head back. "Yeah, yeah! I can see! I see you!"
You both freeze, your splashing had ceased and you both just floated here, staring at eachother's hazy faces in the dark.
"Uhm-" He starts, scratching his head.
"Should i-"
"No-! Yes-! Go ahead"
You swim out of the water, propping yourselves onto the rough rock, he gestures you to follow him deeper into the cave and he stops walking, sticking his back towards the wall and pointing his chin at the most magnificent thing you've ever laid your eyes on.
Your jaw drops to your feet as you marveled at the sight before you.
"Holy fuck" you say.

AAAAAND THAT'S PART 2! The fight scene was incredibly fun to write as you can see I kinda lengthened it just cuz I had the creative freedom, also the scene with Jake, Neteyam, and Lo'ak gotta have some angst in this chapter, even though there's more coming in the suceeding parts. Anyways!!!! I hope you enjoyed! <3

part 3 of the SOLD OUT OF LOVE series
Tumblr media
He's brought you to a cave, the ocean seemingly only a gateway to a hidden world, for there lay an island surrounded by water, home to a plethora of lush fauna, full of bright flowers of different colours, leaves spread open like fans double the size of a Na'vi, the sand like crushed up gemstones glittering and shimmering underneath the sunlight, a throng of giant trees towering over you, almost brushing the ceiling, the ceiling in which had a hole big enough to allow sunlight in, giving justice to the island's glory.
You couldn't contain your awe and so you simply stood there, admiring the whole cave as your heart practically swelled at its beauty. "Oh my fucking Eywa" was all you could say, and everything you wanted to say.
"No one knows this place but me" says Ao'nung, stepping closer to you. "Here you will be able to feel simple again"
At that you turn around, looking at him in disbelief. "Ao'nung-"
"No" He stops you. "I won't hear any of it, this place is yours now... as much as mine"
So you recalculate your approach. "Thank you" You say instead.
He bows his head. "You're welcome"
You walk towards the island, well, more like ran, you were eager to see every bit of it, Ao'nung simply stood and watched as you leaped around, pointing things out he himself hasn't seen before, your laughter the only thing he could hear.
"So why'd you bring me here? To your secret spot?" You insist after a while, taking a seat on the rock as your eyes followed him, taking a seat beside you.
"It is my way of making my peace"
"You already said sorry"
You see him shake his head. "It is not enough, even after I have apologised I found that not even that could chasten the guilt burning inside me"
It made you think.
"It's me... doing you a solid " He says, the unfamiliarity of the phrase to him making it known, despite all that it made you bite down on a grin. "I'm still not entirely convinced I was the first person you've brought here"
"You don't believe me?"
You shake your head. "Nah"
He scoffed.
"So you're telling me you didn't even bring Rotxo here?"
"No"
"Not even your other friends?"
He sneers at you. "Especially not them"
"Not even a few girls?" You grinned suggestively.
He shoves you away, both of you laughing. "Cut it out, of course not"
You stood in front of him now, showing him your hands. "Maybe I'm getting this all wrong, what about boys?"
He half-shrugged, staring up at you. "A few close calls but... no, they did not want to pursue the son of the Olo'eyktan"
You give him a small smile, a distant one. "Back home, neither did they, no one there took me seriously, it's the problem with keeping your options open, they get scared, run for the hills, leaving you with nothing"
His eyes snapped up. "Wait-"
"You're kidding me, you didn't take a guess?" You laughed. "Like calls to like"
His aquamarine eyes still on you, he lets out an amused scoff. "Huh"
This was where you hum, nodding in understanding. "So, i'm the only girl you've ever brought here?"
"The first and the last" He replied darkly.
"Am I just gunna turn into one of your Na'vi sacrifices?"
"Keep talking and you might find out"
You let out a lone cackle, pulling your head back and allowing your laughter to let loose, seemingly drunk off of nothing but the pure idea of having a good time with the same boy you wanted to kill just a few days ago, and he sees all of this, from your cheeky grin, to your flushed cheeks, to your narrowed amber eyes that glistened as your body shook with laughter.
"I feel like you'll tell me that you don't actually like leading people and that you want to become a Tsahík instead" You say, turning your back on him and walking towards a white flower that grew on stringy vines, you rub the petal, feeling the smooth, delicate surface in between the pads of your fingers before propping yourself up.
"I do"
"Wow, that was spot on" You say, mostly to yourself.
"But how do you know that Forest Girl?" He wonders, looking you straight in the eyes, the huskiness of his accent mixing with the silvery nature of his voice only inclining you to tell him why.
"Your face, your bruises healed quickly than your friends, and I expect they paid a visit to your mother after the fight" You explained, shifting your weight from one foot to the other. "Your hands were dyed purple when you saw me by the rocks, and I recognised the smell, you used tam'bon on your face and your knuckles mixed with other poultices from the many mixtures your mother has in your Marui, you'd have to be paying really close attention to know which to use on your face"
"My mother is the Tsahík, I see her healing people everyday"
"No" you stop him. "Only someone this passionate about healing would be taking note of everything the Tsahík does, it isn't a coincidence, you were listening on purpose"
His eyes widened like saucers. "Wow"
"You used yalna bark too, I can tell"
He nods, standing to his feet. "Impressive"
"One of my many, many talents" You bragged, giving him a sly smirk. "You should try guessing me next"
"Fine uhhh" He sang, rubbing his knuckles together. "You don't like being told what to do"
"Yes, but very obvious, dig a little deeper"
"Fine" He says again. "You're the oldest daughter?"
"No, you forgot about Kiri, Lo'ak goes after her, I go after Lo'ak"
"Really?" He asks. "I always thought you were older than her"
"How?" You questioned him genuinely, until a light bulb buzzed to life above your head. "You know what? this could be a thing"
"What thing?"
You sit down in front of him. "There's this game we play back in the Omaticayan Village, it's called 20 questions, instead of us trying to guess we'd have to ask, and the other person has to answer no matter what"
"No matter what?" He asks.
"No. matter. what" You reiterate gravely.
"You go first then" He says nodding at you.
"How old are you?" You began, already grinning like a maniac.
"16" Ao'nung answers. "17 in 2 months, how old are you?"
"14, turning 15 in..." you stopped to count. "6- no, 7 months"
He nods. "Next question"
"How tall are you?"
"8 foot 5"
You raise an eyebrow at him. "Really? Some people say they're 8 feet tall but in reality they're only 7 foot 9"
"How can I be 7 foot 9?" He exclaimed, almost scandalised.
"I dunno, you ask yourself that" You frowned.
"Just ask the next question" He says boredly.
You bite your inner lip in thought, exhaling when you finally think of the next question. "Why do you hang around them?" You found yourself asking instantly. "Those boys, you don't even seem to like them all that well"
That seemed to have ceased the lightheartedness of the situation, silence settling in awkwardly, quickly, like a virus finding a host.
"I dont know why" He tells you quietly. "It's a comfortable choice, they never seem to care about anything except the present, they don't care that I am to be the next Olo'eyktan, that I am to lead our people for the many years to come, if I stick with them maybe I can forget what is to be my fate"
You stay quiet, so does he. It's almost a dizzying experience, to have Ao'nung pour himself out to you like that when 5 days ago all you wanted in life was to rip his head clean off his shoulders, half of you were expecting for him to stand up, laugh in your face for believing such a thing but as time progressed you found that flame dying rapidly.
But he exhaled, making you glance at him. "What about you Forest Girl?"
You snort, grinning. "What about me??"
"Do you have any secrets worth my time?"
"I got no secrets, I'm an open book"
"Surely there must be something you aren't telling me" He pressed. "What's your favorite food?"
"Pizza- well used to"
"What's that?"
"It's sort of like this triangular shaped snack with meat, and cheese, and sauce on it"
"Oh, well alright" He says, all while having no clue what that is. "What's your favorite food now then?"
"I'm torn between melon tree fruit and yovo fruit"
He grinned. "That, I can get behind by"
"Oh!" You exclaimed, snapping your fingers. "What's your favorite colour?"
"Yellow " He answered.
"Really?" You scoffed. "I thought you'd say blue or something"
He gives you a look. "Blue? Why Blue?"
You gesture to him, making him frown. "Why wouldn't you say blue?"
He gives you an insincere laugh. "Very funny Forest Girl" He drawled. "What about you then? What's your favorite colour?"
"Y/F/C" you state, pushing your hair back away from your face.
He half-shrugged, staring at his finger nails. "Yeah, I guessed as much"
You draw a line on your teeth with your tongue. "If you could leave right now, where would you go?"
"Anywhere but here" He replied, standing up as well. "As long as I can get far away from this place as possible"
You watch him as he starts picking up branches on the sand, realizing he just needed to do something with his hands. "This is my home yes, I've never known any place else but I just want to leave, my knowledge only goes as far as riding a skimwing, but I know the ocean will end eventually"
"Then ride an íkran"
"Well I don't know how to, do I?"
"I'll teach you" You offer, leaning against a tree. "If you taught me how to ride an ilu, surely I can teach you how to ride an íkran"
He gives you an incredulous look, tossing the branches into the water. "So you can throw me off 50 feet in the air? no thank you"
"No, I'm serious, do you really want to learn?"
He thinks, almost entertaining the idea. "I would not oppose once the opportunity presents itself"
"The opportunity is practically waving at you, Ao'nung"
"Maybe another day" He says instead, so you decide it was an answer enough.
Whatever stars have aligned, whatever curse was cast on you, the both of you spent about an hour talking about the most aimless things that made even you wonder what kind of sick stunt the universe was trying to pull.
"Stop it! You are throwing me off!" Ao'nung exclaimed trying to stop you from doubling over and laughing.
You wipe the tears collecting at the edge of your eyes, trying to catch your breath. "Just- just say it again-!"
Ao'nung clicks his tongue against his mouth. "I will not, all you'll do is laugh at me!" He protests.
You sit on the rock again, pulling, well, practically forcing him to sit down before he could run away again. "I promise I won't laugh just- just say it again"
He sits back down unceremoniously, no thanks to you. "What is a castrated smurf anyway? Why do I need to tell Neteyam he looks like a castrated smurf? "
"Because you can" You insist, trying to resist your laughter again. "It's a glowing compliment amongst Sky People, trust me"
"Fine" He says, rolling his eyes at you. "I trust you"
You giggled through your nose, a smile breaking on your face as you look at him.
amber meeting aquamarine.
Your eyes trail to the giant purple bruises that littered his face, then to his neck where you had cut him with your dagger, all the millions of white freckles on his face like Eywa had kissed stars onto the afternoon sky.
You blink, so does he, and suddenly you tear away from eachother, you turn away from him, Ao'nung starts rubbing at his nape as you feel silence encapsulate you once more.
"Where did your necklace go?" He asks, almost on cue a wave of coldness washes over your collarbone.
"It snapped off during the fight, I went back for it, tried finding the pieces but with all the sand flying around during it I barely found half" You replied.
Oh great. another thing Ao'nung felt responsible for. "I see" He replies.
So you stand up, looking at everything but him, the trees, the white petals fading into purple then yellow at the very middle, its orange stigmas standing tall, you walk up to it, leaning into it to take a whiff, light, musky, sweet, you found yourself sniffing it again, you hold it by its stem but a bug reveals itself and crawls onto your hand, you flinch and flick your hand away. Ao'nung laughs at you. "It is just a little insect, you cannot be that afraid of it"
"I can feel it's legs all over me, it's gross and weird" you explain before you shudder involuntarily.
He looks at the vines again and plucks a flower before handing it to you. You stare at it warily and he sighs when you did not take it instantly. "I promise there are no bugs on there"
"You might be lying"
"Why would I lie?"
"I don't know, but you could" You state, watching as he rolls his eyes. After a moment of contemplating you decide to take it before you stand up on your toes and you tuck the flower between his ear, landing back to your feet to see an unimpressed Ao'nung staring back at you.
"Oh Jesus do I wish I had a camera" You sighed longingly.
You see him cross his arms over his chest, a ball forming at his temple as he tightened his jaw. "I look like a joke"
"You look pretty"
"I'm not pretty" He said. "I'm hot"
You let out a laugh. "Whatever helps you sleep at night"
"take it off" He whined.
"Nuh-uh, I don't want to"
"You're a child" He declares sanctimoniously.
"Uh-huh" You nod absentmindedly.
"Come on, take this stupid flower out, I don't want it"
"Take it off yourself" You say.
He lets out a disparaging groan and pulls it out of his ear, you were about to prove your point but that was before he places the flower behind your ear instead. Your eyes widen a centimeter and your cheeks flush to a lilac as your hand instinctively reaches up to it, your fingertips barely brushing the tips of the petals.
"There" Ao'nung says, pulling you out of your trance. "Now you look like the joke"
You narrow your eyes at him and walk away towards the water, the bioluminescent creatures making your stomach drop.
"Fuck" you say, making Ao'nung turn around. "Ao'nung how long have we been down here?"
"I know as much as you do Forest Girl" He retaliates.
"We gotta go back"
The sound of the conch shell make your heads snap upwards, towards the hole of cave where the moon was only a ways off from casting it's silvery glow onto the island.
You turn to Ao'nung. "Oh you're so fucked" You laughed.
"Says you" He laughed back, pointing a finger at your face before you slap it away, he rolls his eyes and shakes his head at you for what seemed like the umpteenth time that day before running back to the way you came with you tailing him. Once the two of you reach the water he dives in, barely even making a splash and resurfacing mere seconds later.
"Come on!"
"But my-"
"It'll stay on" He cuts you off mid-sentence, seeming to know what your next words were. So you jump in, paddling alongside him as you tried swimming out of there before he did, eventually you made it out of the structure, swimming upwards like your life depended on it, glancing at Ao'nung every now and then only for you to pick up your pace as he picked up his. You resurface at the same time, he beats you at calling his ilu first while you took a while catching your breath, he saddles his ilu the moment yours arrived, laughing at you as you struggled to get on.
You tell Hinewai to put the pedal to the metal and you finally managed to catch up to him, his eyes widening as he sees you pop up on his peripheral.
"Hurry up!" He tells you.
You let out a disparaging groan. "What do you think I've been doing smart ass??"
He only laughs, pulling his head back before he dives under the water, shooting out moments later, his ilu spinning on the air before landing back onto the water.
Show off.
The pair of you decided to round the island, turning to Ao'nung when you see all the village people crowding the docks, muttering your name, only for him to avoid your eyes.
You hop off your ilu as does he, trudging up the sand as you feel the eyes of every Metkayin trained on you. Parting the crowd was your mother, your father, Neteyam, and Lo'ak, followed by your sisters close behind.
"She's here!" Dad calls out to the people, you couldn't help but frown as he began checking your arms and your face. "She's alright! She's fine"
"My son" Tonowari starts.
"Father, I see you" Ao'nung addressed, placing his hand over his forehead and bringing it to his chest. You cringe subtly and do the same. "I see you, Olo'eyktan"
He geeets the both of you with the same gesture.
"Is it true what they say?" He began as you felt Ao'nung tense up beside you. "That you have brought Lo'ak beyond the reef? That you have risked his life?"
You snap your head towards Ao'nung, your face falling only to see him glancing up at his father with a pensive look.
"Yes" He replies without hesitation.
Ronal jumps down the platform only to pull his ear, making him wince. "What were you thinking?! Leading Toruk Makto's son to his death??" She hissed, Ao'nung avoiding her face. "This behavior is beneath you"
Jake takes your shoulder and makes you face him. "Where the hell have you been? I thought I taught you better than to not keep track of the time"
"I know but i-"
"No, no excuses" He snapped, hopping over the platform, you trying to follow him.
"Dad just please-" You insist.
He turns to you. "You'll get to talk when we get back to our pod, now drag your ass back home"
"Toruk Makto please-" says Ao'nung, almost stepping in between you and your father, he meets your father's gaze and he immediately regrets his decision, his eyes flicking towards you only to see pure hatred burning back into his retinas. "I am at fault here" He began again cautiously.
You try and ignore the whispers that reverberated around you, the looks of your brothers practically burning into your scalp. "I brought her with me to apologise for our altercation a couple of days ago, I did not mean to bring her home this late, we were caught up in eachother, we lost track of time, believe me, my intentions with your daughter are pure-"
Jake blinks, you could practically feel his anger radiate off of him. "-i'm sorry what?"
"-Dad, this is not what it looks like" You jump in front of Ao'nung, your eyes wide as the whispers around you only intensified.
Ao'nung nudges you away. "-Please, Toruk Makto do not blame your daughter, she has done nothing wrong"
Ronal walks up to Ao'nung grabbing his chin and tilting it upwards, giving everyone a perfect view of his scar. "She might as well explain what is this then"
Neytiri comes forward, feeling her behind you. "My daughter will not answer to you"
"We've discussed this alright? We've buried the hatchet, it's done and dealt with" Jake explained hurriedly, eyes switching from you, to the Tsahík, to you, to Ao'nung.
"While I commend you for trying to make peace on your own terms I cannot forget the fact that you have put Lo'ak in grave peril and returned Y/N home past eclipse"
"No," says Lo'ak. "Going past the reef was not Ao'nung's fault, it was my idea, he tried to talk me out of it, really "
"Lo'ak-" Neytiri started.
"I'm sorry" was all your twin could say before he too hopped up on the platform.
You begin your walk of shame, plodding through the woven pathways as Lo'ak appeared by your side, donning the same downcast expression as you did, your eyes meet, sending eachother whatever was the most microscopic amounts of optimism left in you before your father caught up to you.
"Dad, you told us to make friends with these kids that's all I was trying to-"
"-I don't wanna hear it"
"-Dad" You start, trying to back Lo'ak up, all while having no desire to lengthen this argument any further, but he dosen't even look at you.
"You have brought shame to this family" He tells Lo'ak, who simply stood beside you with an impassive expression.
"Can I go now?" He wonders impatiently.
"Anymore trouble I jerk a knot in your tail, you read me?"
"Yes sir, Lima Charlie" He replies before walking off, you pivot your heel and follow him, trying to put as much distance away from you and your parents as possible only to have Jake pull you back and face them.
"That's strike 2 for you young lady" He says, showing you two fingers to make himself clear. "Look, I dunno what went in your head when you decided to follow Ao'nung when your brother had been missing for hours-"
"-I didn't know he was missing"
He opens his mouth to say something but closes it quickly and sighs. "Jesus, Mary, and Joseph" He exclaimed, raking his face with dread. "You're still a kid, I don't want you making decisions that'll make your life go up in smoke, you know that right?"
You nod, your jaw still tight.
"I gotta worry about Lo'ak, I gotta worry about Tuk, I gotta worry about Kiri, do I gotta worry about you too?" He ejaculated, throwing his hand in the air.
You shake your head. "No sir"
"Good" He tells you, his eyes darting up to the flower stuck to your ears and you couldn't help but notice it. "Then we're done here, am I understood?"
"Sir, yes, sir" You nod, your feet already itching to get away.
"Good, get out of here" He nods towards the docks and you didn't telling twice. Pushing past the villagers, you hop down the platform, knowing full well who you were going to find next.
And you do find him, walking alone on the beach, almost sulking.
You didn't exactly try and mask the sound of your footsteps and so he sees you about 5 feet away from him.
His eyes light up. "What are you-"
You slam your hands onto his chest, sending him staggering back several steps away from you.
"Are you fucking brain dead? " You seethe, narrowing your eyes at him, pushing at him again and watching him collect himself. "Are you crazy? "
"I don't think I am, no" He exclaimed, watching you go on a rampage.
"What the fuck is wrong with you??? Trying to embarrass me in front of your whole goddamn clan?? Is that what you wanted this whole time? Try- try and get me to lower my guard down? Make me laugh? Make me reveal my secrets? so that in the end I can make you look like a fucking hero???" You yell at him, bashing your fists against his chest.
"Stop it-!" He shouts, trying to grab your fists.
You push him away. "No! No! Let me go!"
"I will when you calm down-!"
You yanked your arms away from his grasp, pointing a slender finger at his face, looking at him with unbridled rage and fury. "Is that what you wanted? To make a fool out of me??"
He swallows, hesitating. "No-"
"Do you know what you did??" You ask him, your voice cracking. "Do you know-"
"-No!" Ao'nung shouts. "No! I don't know-!"
"You made me look weak! Like I needed to rely on some man for protection!" You screeched into the sea before whirling towards him.
"I stood up for you! I defended you and this is what I get?? Not even a thank you???" He yelled.
You slapped him across the face, he turns to you, clutching his cheek.
"I never asked you to defend me did i?" You tell him.
"I still did"
"Learn to take a hint next time"
"You should be grateful" He spat.
You hummed, staring at his face. "The next time you raise your tongue against me I won't hesitate to give you a matching set" You say, prodding his bruised cheekbone, hearing him hiss in pain before pulling the flower from behind your ear and throwing it to the sand, you gave him one last look and with that you turn around, marching back to the village.
"I hate you!" He shouts after you.
"Suck my dick!" You yelled back.

part 4 of the SOLD OUT OF LOVE series
Tumblr media
When you'd be confined to the lab because of influenza which you caught often, Spider would risk the possibility of infection and stay in your room all day because unlike you, your germs feared Spider. You'd close all the lights and the both of you would lay on your bed and look at the glowing solar system Max and Norm had painted on your ceiling. It was a moment of peace he wouldn't exchange for the world, just lying next to his sister in the dark, basking in the silence.
Until he speaks. "Do you ever wonder what it would be like if we lived on Earth?"
You turn to him. "I'd always be in the hospital"
"Yeah, well what's different now?" He bit back.
You chewed on your lower lip, he was right. "We'd be going to school, we'd have friends-"
"-that are not giant blue aliens" He adds, the both of you laughing.
"You think if we were on Earth we wouldn't be orphans?"
He shifts, and the bed bounces underneath you. "Maybe" Spider replied cautiously. "If my mom hadn't been flying that gunship she'd probably still be here... not sure about my dad though"
"You're lucky you knew your dad"
He shook his head adamantly. "No I'm not"
"Fine, then you're not" you say, giving up.
"Would we even know eachother if our moms weren't brought here? If they hadn't met our dads?"
This made Spider think hard. "We still would, my mom knows your aunt Trudy"
"No, they met at that flight school, if they weren't chosen, they wouldn't know eachother, we wouldn't know eachother"
This made him tuck his lips together. "I guess you're right"
"I am right" You tell him, propping yourself up by your forearm, Spider mirroring your action. "But what does it matter anyway? We're stuck here, there's no life for us back in Earth cuz it's dying, we've got nowhere else to go"
"Then I guess we gotta stick together don't we?" He replies, poking your shoulder. "Us outsiders gotta stick together, Spider and Firefly, that way nothing can tear us apart"
You grinned, your teeth lighting up in the darkness. "Nothing" You echoed, twirling your pinky over his, breathy giggles taking over you both.
You were the first to pull away, lying flat down on your back, using the same hand to scratch at your IV taped to your wrist used to replenish your dehydrated body. That was several months before the accident, where it changed your lives forever. It was never Spider and Firefly against the world anymore, it was just Spider.
Because the promise you had made to eachother, the promise of the two children orphaned by war initiated in a dark room lit up with neon stars and planets was forever broken.
The both of you grew up in Pandora, took your first steps on Pandora, spoke your first words on Pandora, you had Spider, Spider had you, he didn't care that he could spend most of everyday outside when you were stuck in your room. He'd tell you everything and spare no detail, the speeches, plays, and presentations you two had made to convince Max and Norm to let you out for 3 hours were the highlights of your life, especially when they'd agree.
He lost his mom, his dad, and when they pulled you out of that river unresponsive he thought he might as well lost you too.
2 months ago he had been bragging to the Sully children that he could palace his chin on top of your head without even standing on his tip toes, he blinked and suddenly you could place your entire forearm on top of his head without even trying. He stayed silent, knowing he should be grateful you weren't so sick anymore- but at what cost? He had been more alone now since before you were born, you had been alone together, now he was just alone.
But he wasn't the only one feeling what he was feeling, you were battling your own surges of loneliness trying to grab hold of you. It was a hard change, human food started to taste like paste, you weren't used to being a tug away from being naked, your skin being so blue. It was weird.
You shared a bond with Spider not even the other Sully kids could replicate, now he was gone, and you didn't know when you'd get him back, if you'd get him back.
Lo'ak snapped his fingers in front of you. "Baby sis, you good?"
You blinked. "Uh-huh" You mutter unconvincingly, standing up with a basket you dug against your hip, making your way down to the fish nets to retrieve your lunch for the day.
"What's up?"
"Missing Spider"
"Oh" He says. "He's a tough guy, he'll be fine"
Even Lo'ak didn't believe his words, and so you nodded along. "Yeah, I know"
He crouches beside you, grabbing the pesky fish that fought back and dropping them into the basket. "I've seen him chug Whiskey with a straight face, and, get a scolding from our parents for letting us take a sip, if he can survive that he can survive anything"
"I know he can" You tell him, sliding a fish into the hole of your basket. "Sometimes I just wonder if it's enough"
"It is" He assured you, placing a wet hand on your shoulder. You appreciated the gesture but pried his hand off of you moments later.
Lessons that afternoon were interesting, it was the only word that could sum up the entirety of what had awaited you after lunchtime. The moment you saw Ao'nubg across the beach with your siblings you turned your heel and bolted the other way, you hid in your Marui, helping your mother with repurposing old clothes, chopping fruit for dinner that night.
1, 2, 3, 4 Sullys on the beach, yet one was missing.
He itched to ask them, your brothers, it practically consumed him, knawed at him on the inside to ask your brothers where you were and why you missed your lessons.
Only at the end of the day did he finally give in. "Where is she?"
"Where is who?" Neteyam wonders.
"Your beloved sister?"
"Kiri? Tuk? They're right over there with Tsireya and Rotxo" Lo'ak butts in, pointing his thumb at the secondary group floating on their backs in the water, giggling and gliding.
He rolled his eyes. "No genius, your other one, Y/N?"
Lo'ak shrugged. "Dunno, she says she was dizzy, Mom didn't wanna let her swim in her state"
He hummed. "I see"
But for the past week, it was almost as if you hadn't run out of excuses to miss lessons. They'd wait half an hour for you to come out only for one of your siblings to tell the rest of your friends that you weren't coming. Ao'nung never bothered to come anymore, claiming that he himself wasn't feeling well and that he must have gotten what you've caught all the while having no interactions this past week.
After lessons, Tsireya would catch him hanging out with his other friends or if not then lying on his hammock throwing a woven grass ball in the air, but when his grating mother couldn't leave him alone for two seconds then he'd be riding his ilu on the other side of the island for some peace and quiet.
It was the 4th day of you purposely evading lessons, you sat in your Marui with your mother while she braided your hair. "When will you start attending lessons again Ma'íte?"
"When I feel better" You reply.
"There is this boy that keeps coming to our hut, he says he misses your presence in lessons" You practically froze on the spot as your heartbeat began to rise in a cresendo.
"What was his name?" Your mother asked to herself while you sat there and apprehensively awaited for her next words. "Ahh yes, Rotxo"
Either she knew what she was doing or she had no clue at all- but you wouldn't put it past her. "Yeah, Rotxo's a sweetheart"
Your mother hummed in agreement. "Yes, such a sweet boy, very polite" She stopped, tying off the braid she had previously been working with and starting on another one. "although you were never really drawn to the sweet ones, were you Ma'íte?"
This woman was sick.
"I don't know what you mean" You lie.
She giggles. "You might not be my child by blood but we are more alike than you thought" She asks you for one of the shells you were holding and you hand it to her, feeling her thread it into your locks. "Just say it, sweet girl"
"Say what?" You managed, ignoring the warmth that plagued your cheeks as you straightened your posture.
"That you thought I was talking about somebody else"
You needed to get out of here, she's practically nipping at your heels. Your sweet mother, bringing you in for slaughter. You remaining silent only made her laugh.
"So there is someone?"
"No" you replied a little too quickly. "No, there is no one"
"Then I believe you"
"Good, then we'll just chalk this conversation up to finished"
"Maybe we will" She tells you to stand up and look at yourself in the mirror, admiring the beads, shells, and hair cuffs you told her to put in, turning your head so that the sunlight reflected onto them.
"You did amazing mom, it looks beautiful" you grinned.
She smiles, placing her hands on your shoulders. "I did nothing sweet girl, the beauty is all yours"
"How's she feeling?" You both turn your heads to see your father walking in the Marui. "Still lightheaded?"
"She's feeling fine, aren't you Ma'íte?"
You nod.
He took one good look at your face and turns to your mother. "Neytiri, her face is all flushed, is she coming down on a fever?"
Your eyes widen as you whirl your head towards the mirror. Goddamnit.
You mother pretends to be shocked, turning you to face her. "Your father is right, maybe you should stay home today afterall"
You shook your head. "No I think I'll go out today, it's been long enough"
Jake frowned. "Is she sure? Are you sure? "
You nodded. "Mm-hm" already making your way across the Marui.
"No funny business alright???"
"Alright! Alright!"
"Y/N!" Your father called out.
"I got it!" Was all you said before you jogging down the steps and onto the beach.
Neytiri approached Jake by the mouth of the Marui, the pair of them watching as you ran up to your other siblings and your friends splashing eachother with water by the coastline.
"Ma Jake" Neytiri began.
"Mm"
"It may have escaped your notice but no matter how much you deny it, she is her own woman now, not the little girl we have taken under our wing so many years ago"
Jake sighed, his ears flattening against the sides of his skull as he turns his head towards Neytiri. "I know that"
"I know you do, and yet you refuse to acknowledge it"
"She's got too much fire in her"
"That is a good thing"
"Come on, you knew Betty, cross her one time she'll cross your heart out" He exclaimed, trying to prove his point.
"Ma Jake, believe me when I say that you cannot keep protecting her forever, someday you have to let her go"
"I made a promise to her mother that I'll keep her safe, with everything she's done for me in the past I owe her that much" He explained, Neytiri places a hand on his cheek in the process. "I'm too scared of screwing this up, I try and limit her, and what is she doing? She's going against me, fooling around"
They watched as you joined in on the fight, cringing and screaming when Kiri sent a huge wave your way. "Go easy on her, if you restraint her too much she will drift farther and farther away from us"
"I haven't been living up to my promise like I wanted, I've almost lost her once, I'm not about to let that happen again"
They turn to the beach again and watch as You and Tuk harshly tackle Neteyam, Rotxo and Kiri throwing fistfuls of sand at eachother, and Tsireya giggling her head off as Lo'ak tried pulling off a piece of seaweed that had gotten stuck on his tail but ended up spinning around like a top.
"Stay down!" Tuk screamed at Neteyam floating in the water pretending to be dead and even sticking his tongue out for effect.
You grab her waist and placed her on your shoulders. "The mighty warriror Tuktirey has defeated the fearsome wildebeest, she knows nothing! only rage!"
She let's out a war cry, everyone else in the group started doing the same causing passersby to look at what was causing the sudden ruckus on the shoreline She then leaps off of you and into Neteyam causing a huge splash, she pretends to wrestle with his body while your oldest brother tried his hardest to contain his giggles. All of you began chanting Tuk's name as she managed to stand on Neteyam's chest (with him holding her by her ankles of course) banging her fists on her chest as you all started hooting and cheering for her.
Since you were so close to your Marui, Neteyam (who you were sure had a bruised lung at this point) got word from your father that you were allowed to stay out a little later than usual.
Lo'ak was with Tsireya somewhere, Neteyam and Kiri were riding their íkrans above the islands, which left you and Tuk collecting shells on the beach.
"This one! This one!" She says, pointing a finger at a shell that looked similar to one she picked earlier.
"You already have one that looks like that" You say, holding a bucket already half-full of shells.
"Yeah but now I have two of these, so if I lose the other one I got this one" She explained whilst dropping it in the bucket, joining the other shells.
You laughed, shaking your head. "Can't argue with that logic"
All of a sudden you hear Tuk gasp, you turn around just in time before you see her bolt into the forest. Abandoning the bucket you run after her, calling her name, firing threats at her until you reach a clearing and you realize you lost sight of her.
"Tuk!" You shout. "Dad will skin you alive!"
No response, only the breeze and the chirping of insects in the distance mocking you.
"Come out! Come on! " You say, looking behind trees and bushes, behind rocks and shrubs. "Tuktirey Te Suli Neytiri'ite this is not funny!"
"Kinda is"
Your head snaps up at the voice, but you don't turn around.
"chilly night tonight, isn't it Forest Girl?"
At that you finally turn around to see Ao'nung, leaning against a tree, sporting a devilish smirk.
You feel your hands ball up into fists, your nails creating crescent shaped dents onto your palm. "What did you do to my sister"
His eyes widen, he shows you his palms, chuckling raucously. "If my calculations are correct she might be running into your brother and my sister any minute now" He steps forward. "Listen, I asked her to lead you into the forest so that I could talk to you, alone" He states, aquamarine eyes scanning your face. "I only wanted to talk to you"
You prayed to Eywa to give you the strength to not punch the lights out of this boy. "You were in cahoots with my sister??" You practically shrieked.
"Well-" He began, trying to think of a statement that he could use to defend himself but sighed when he realized his mind was blank. "Yes, that is exactly what it is"
"I can't believe you!" You spat, narrowing your eyes into slits.
"Y/N I just wanted to say sorry, please" He begs, the fact that this was the first time he used your actual name in front of you and not some derogatory nickname did not go unnoticed by you or him.
"You fuck up, you apologise, you trick me into trusting you and then what? You fuck up again?" You wonder. "Is this a part of your golden boy routine? Get some praise for admitting to your mistakes?"
"No" He proclaimed steadfast, walking up to you again so now there were only a handful of inches in between you. "I am the son of the Olo'eyktan, I should have been treating you with more respect, I have been stupid, an-and selfish and I have let arrogance and conceit take over me"
He stops to take a breath, wetting his lips before he continued. "I want you to see that I do not want my past behavior to define me, if you will accept my apology and let me make it up to you it would mean the world to me... but if you don't, just say the word and I will never show my face to you again"
An ultimatum. You shouldn't have expected less from him. You found yourself scanning his face for any weak points, any tell tale signs that might tell you he was lying and was only doing this as a dare or if his parents promised him a grave punishment when he came home unsuccessful. You hated it when you realized he was telling the truth.
As much as you would have loved walking the shores of Awa'atlu knowing that Ao'nung would never show you his putrescent face again- you couldn't help but succumbing to his words, his promises, you were fighting with yourself, telling your other half to turn heel and sprint, sprint, and never look back but you were falling, he was using his tricks against you, letting his big blue eyes do all the work.
That was when you felt it, a little flame, bursting to life inside of you, warm, unfamiliar, questionable, lighting up the dark caverns of your chest, flooding it with an obscure sensation.
"Why did you want to talk to me all the way out here? In the forest?"
He sighs. "My father encourages me to maintain good relationships with all the Sully children, he says that it is most vital to have connections once I become chief..."
You cock your head to the side a little. "...but?"
"My mother says that I do not need to see you more than I have to"
And there it was.
"Why?" You implore.
"She thinks you're the one that is causing me to skip lessons and my training-"
"-You've been skipping lessons?" Was what left your mouth.
"Admittedly, yes, I have been skipping lessons"
"Why?"
"I didn't feel like attending them"
You gave him a genuine look of disbelief. "That's it?"
"What about you?" He evades. "I heard you have not been keeping up on appearances either"
"Yeah, I wasn't feeling all that great the past few days" you confessed, crossing your arms over your chest. "But I guess I'm feeling better now"
He nods languidly, taking in the situation. "So will you be coming tomorrow?"
You look at the ground then up at Ao'nung. "maybe"
"Good" He says with a smile, you almost wondered why it was so good to him but he squashes your assumptions when he opened his mouth again. "I might have to teach you how to swim all over again"
You flick your finger against his toned forearm, making him look at it and let out a scoff of objection. "Don't get ahead of yourself"
The silence that followed after was evident, your eyes travel up to the sky and realize that it might be around dinner time, mere seconds before your Dad starts ringing the dinner bell and all 5 of you scurry back to the pod like a bunch of sows.
"I guess I'll see you around?" You spoke up, making his head turn to you again. "I gotta go find my sister before she makes Awa'atlu falls to its knees"
"Wait" says he, making you stop. "You never answered me"
You exhaled through your mouth. "Fine you skxawng, I forgive you" you see him grin, ducking his head. "What will the nation do if you never show your face to anyone ever again?"
"I agree, pretty things should be enjoyed"
You involuntarily gagged, earning a loud chuckle from him. "Come on, you like looking at my face"
You remain quiet as he chuckles to his own joke, you roll your eyes and turn around. "Goodnight jackass"
He collects himself. "Goodnight tree hugger"
"Keep 'em coming" you taunt, hurriedly making your way out of the forest as he stays and watches you leave. Only when he was sure you were out of earshot was when he punches a fist in the air and whoops in glee.
Tumblr media
"The ocean blessed you with a gift, brother "
Ao'nung stirred. "The Tulkun have not returned yet, and anyway no Tulkun is ever alone"
"This one was" You turn to your brother, sat across from you. "He had a- a missing fin, like a stump, on the left side"
Tsireya's expression changes. "Payakan"
"Who's Payakan?" Kiri wonders.
"A young bull who went rogue, he's outcast, alone, and has a missing fin" says Rotxo.
Tsireya turns to Lo'ak, taking his arm. "They say he is a killer"
"He killed Na'vi," Ao'nung butts in. "And other Tulkun" He says, leaning forward, his eyes meeting yours before it lands to Lo'ak. "Not here, but far, to the South" He adds.
Lo'ak shook his head, intent on proving his point. "He's not a killer"
Tsireya purses her lips beside you. "Lo'ak, you are lucky to be alive"
"I'm telling you guys, he saved my life, he's my friend!"
"My baby bro!" Neteyam crooned. "Who faced the killer Tulkun, and lived to tell about it" Lo'ak shrugged Neteyam's arm away, standing up to face all of you. "You guys aren't listening"
"Lo'ak I'm listening!"
"Lo'ak come back, you skxawng"
Neteyam runs off to follow him, Tuk dragging Tsireya and Kiri off to the ilu pen, Rotxo following them just for the sake of Kiri, leaving Ao'nung and you behind.
"And then there were two" He beamed, following you as you walked down the steps of the platform and onto the beach. You couldn't help but notice the slight bounce to Ao'nung's steps when he started walking in front of you "You were a whole lot quieter today, Forest Girl, is there something you'd like to share with the class?"
You shook your head at him, biting down on a smile. "You're baiting me, no thank you"
"I am doing nothing of the sort!" He exclaims, giving you a playful frown. "You wound me, Forest Girl"
"Good, somebody's gotta keep you on your toes"
He gave you an unsatisfied hum. "Thank Eywa for you then"
"Damn right, you should be" You replied, approaching the trees that lined the beach, hearing the creaking of the branches only to see Ao'nung already 3 feet above you. "Get down from there, I don't wanna have to carry you all the way home just because you broke something"
"I think I'll risk it," He says. "That way you've got a better of view of me from up here" He begins flexing his muscles in front of you and you shot him a look of disgust, gritting your teeth to keep you from giggling. You failed.
What was happenning?
Ao'nung finally hops down, landing on the sand beside you. "We have got plenty of time to kill before eclipse, what do you suggest we do?"
You begin walking again, Ao'nung following you. "We sit and watch the water"
"Boring" He droned.
You look at him with eyes wide. "You were the one who asked"
"Clearly my mistake, I did not realize how utterly dull you are"
You stopped walking and turned to him, raising a quizzical brow. "What about you smart guy? What do you suggest we do?" You wonder.
He shrugged, a sly smirk playing at his face. "I was thinking we just go to the cave and-"
You stop him from talking by placing a finger over his mouth. "Nuh-uh, the last time we went there I practically got my ass beat because of it, I am literally an arguement away from my Dad chaining me to our Marui"
He compromised. "Fine, we could go to the other side of the island and visit the waterfalls?"
"I'm not allowed to go to the other side of the island"
"Your father won't know"
"No means no, Ao'nung" You insist.
He threads his fingers together, cracking his knuckles. "You wanna go to the diving rock? It's got a killer drop, 30 feet"
You shook your head. "No, no more swimming"
"Then I have got nothing" He confessed, placing his hands on his hips and facing the water.
"Look, you don't need to push it, bro" You tell him, placing a hand on his shoulder. It was like he took a punch to the gut. "You can go do all that stuff without me, I'll just hold you down"
"You wouldn't" He says, making your ears flick upwards. "I just wanted to..."
"Wanted what?"
His eyes meet yours, turning his body away. "It's- nevermind that now, it is stupid"
You slap his shoulder. "No it won't, tell me"
He keeps his eyes down, only meeting your gaze every now and then just to catch a glimpse of your face, how the setting sun casted a syrupy glow onto your face, how it only made him want to look at you longer. It was like an anvil had been tied to his ankles, pulling him down to the seabed, down, down, down until he finally allows it.
"I wanted you to stay a bit longer" He concedes.
"Why?" You teased. "All you gotta do is ask"
He looked unsure, hesitant but scans your face nonetheless, after a moment of standing, the setting sun a witness to Ao'nung's diffident self, he sighs. "Will you stay?" He finally asks.
You considered it, turning to the water as you felt your lips curling up into a mischeivous grin. "Fine, only because you begged" You said. "Desperation is a good look on you, you know" Ao'nung shoves you again and you stagger back cackling, letting your laughter rip.
You see him grinning too, pointing at you as you kept on laughing. "Foul play, you do not get to word it that way"
"I was telling the truth!"
"You were twisting my words" He insists, giving you a shrewd smile.
"Only a little bit" you admit, pushing your hair away from your face and sitting down on the sand
He props his leg up, placing his elbow over his knee while you sat cross legged. "I hope your father didn't reprimand you any more than what I have seen two days ago"
"No, he just gave me the silent treatment, he always does it"
"Now why would he do that?"
"He dosen't want to fight with me anymore than he already does, that's why he stays quiet"
He lets out a condescending scoff. "Dosen't look like it"
You half-shrugged. "I'm used to it, it's no big deal"
A moment of silence settles.
"Open out your hand" Ao'nung says oh so suddenly.
You turn to him, your interest piqued. "Why?"
"Just do it" He says, pointing his chin at your hand. "And look the other way"
You sighed, opening your palm and keeping your eyes away until he dropped something in the middle of your hand, something cold, something hard. You finally look down and you couldn't help the gasp that escaped your lips.
It was a necklace. Held together by golden twine with clay beads and pearls strung a centimeter away from the others, then, a pearlescent conch shell as big as your thumb in the very middle.
It looked amazing.
You hated it.
"I asked Tuk for the beads you managed to gather, wasn't hard, all I had to do was bribe her with some candied fruit" He surmised like it was something to be proud of.
"You've got to stop using my sister for your stunts" You say, placing the necklace against the light, your smile widening to an O as it glimmered.
He smirked, ducking his head. "She's the only Sully who truly likes me"
"That's not true" You tell the boy, waiting for him to look up to you, and when he does you continue. "Not really"
And this boy blushes.
"Hah! 14 different shades of purple!" You shout.
He dosen't say anything, only letting you make fun of him, prodding at his forearms, giggling when he averts his face.
"Are you done?" He asks after a while, failing at stifling a grin.
You shrugged, lifting your hair up to tie the necklace together. "Maybe" you laughed, patting your hair down and raising your eyebrows at him. "So, how's it look?"
"Uhh, it looks- it looks great" He responds, feeling the unfamiliar warmth blossom beneath your ribs. "Now you'll have something to draw attention away from your frightening face"
You click your tongue at him, hearing his infectious laugh and watching as he shields his face away from the beating that was about to come.
"Y/N"
The laughter stops. The both of you whirl around to see Neteyam donning his signature stony expression, you stand up straighter, distancing yourself from Ao'nung.
"Come on" says Neteyam, his gaze switching to you, then to Ao'nung, then the necklace. "Mom's calling you, she needs help with dinner"
"Can't you help her?" You can't help but wonder. That was probably too mean.
"She wasn't calling me was she?" He retorted, ice running through your veins. "And anyway, i'm not interrupting anything here, am I?"
"No" You tell him.
"Then let's go" He says, you reluctantly walk towards him, he takes your shoulder, leading you out of there as he looks at Ao'nung whose eyes followed you away a little too long for his liking.
"Ao'nung" Neteyam acknowledges.
He nods. "Neteyam" says Ao'nung.
Tumblr media
You both arrived at the Marui, your mood souring by the second. "Explain yourself" Neteyam demands.
You spun around. "What is there to explain? you saw us, we were just talking"
"I mean if you know the way he looks at you or you're just pretending to be blind"
"What are you talking about?" You almost screeched, your eyebrows knitting.
"I don't like you hanging around him," Neteyam tells you, pointing back at the beach. "he's bad news"
You hiss at him but what came out was a groan of annoyance, walking deeper into your pod. "Just butt out of my business"
"Your business is my business!" He tells you pointing at his chest.
"That is not true"
Neteyam groans. "It's Ao'nung, Y/N" He emphasized.
"I am perfectly aware of his name" You sassed.
"He's too old for you" Neteyam insists. "He'll break your heart"
You let out an incredulous laugh, as you turned around. you couldn't believe what he was saying, what he thought was happenning. "That is not what was happenning back there, alright?"
"Why'd he give you that then??"
You don't answer him, instead you scoffed, rolling your honey color eyes. "You are way off-base"
"No," He insisted, stopping you from walking out of the Marui. "what I am is right"
You throw your hand in the air as you walked passed your oldest brother, silencing him. "Whatever, I'm done here"
"I'm still talking to you"
"Well I'm not" You yelled back, running down to the beach, your anger simmering.
In an attempt to avoid your big brother you decide to join both your sisters, Rotxo, and Tsireya to visit the Cove of the Ancestors, hastily agreeing and in a hurry to hop up on your ilu, your brother decided that he would not let you go away so easily and insists that he joined too.
"We have to be there before eclipse settles, it's better that way" Rotxo appends with a grin, before his ilu splashes him in the face, Kiri laughing at his misfortune.
Tumblr media
And Rotxo was right. It did look better after eclipse.
The sky may have darkened into a deep prussian blue but the water hadn't, it glowed several different shades of purple, you look down and see a warped image of their spirit tree, your siblings oohing and ahhing beside you.
All of you swim downwards, Rotxo instructing you to connect your queue to one of the bright purple margins of the leaves and you do, once you had linked your queue it felt as though you were being pulled through a blinding white tunnel, until it stops, and you land on all fours like you had been thrown out of there by some disembodied force.
You look up, you were back in the lab.
Your bare feet on the cold obsidian like tiles giving you fleeting flashbacks of what it was like to be standing back here, your first home. You look down, your hands were smaller, you weren't blue anymore, you adjust your focus to your reflection on the tiles and there it was.
You were a human again.
The sound of arguing catches your attention, it was coming from a few doors down and so you stood up, feeling the weight of your bones pulling you down, the world spun you around and you grab the nearest object to steady yourself, blinking until the world stopped spinning. You slowly made your way across the lab, the familiar mess of papers, the coffee stained tables, holograms of different insects, different plants propped up, books open to pages booked marked with sticky notes, the familiar intricate yet haphazard scrawl of Norm's handwriting, how his t's had a little tail.
"I trusted you! I trusted all of you!" The voice was a woman's, loud, piercing, she was definitely angry, but about what?
"Look, listen to us, all we wanted, all I wanted was to keep her safe, I tried my best Betty, believe me"
Betty?
There was no way.
"Don't try and kiss my ass Sully, do you think I believe the shit you're tryna feed me?" She shouts, followed by a few words in some foreign language where she rolled her r's a lot. "I told you to take care of her, then I come back 8 years later because she cracked her skull open because you- you! " You heard a tussle, like she had pushed someone into a wall. "You let her out at night in this cesspool! In the pouring rain!"
"Betty, we didn't know it was going to rain, alright?"
"Shit excuse, you have trackers in their exopacks don't you?"
"We do but- but Spider and Y/N managed to bypass it without us knowing, we had a hard time locating them and when we did-"
"-My baby's been bleeding out for 20 minutes" She says as you her tired voice turn brittle. "20 minutes" She repeats.
You finally see the door at the end of the hallway, its hinges eased open letting out a ray of periwinkle light on the floor. You walk up to it, standing on your toes and you see a woman, her thick wavy locks looked more puffed up when she was angry, her hickory brown eyes practically piercing needles onto Jake's face, Jake, who was also human, who was standing on his own two feet.
"That's 20 minutes too long Sully"
"Betty, we can't count our losses in this scenario" Jake tells her. "Look, her conditions stable-"
"-Yeah her conditions stable but she's damn lucky she didn't suffer any permanent neurotrauma"
"Betty "
"You're done Jake" says your mother, prodding a finger at his chest, you watch him raise his palms and cringe. "I'm taking her back"
Jake's eyes widen. "You can't do that"
"She's my daughter"
"I raised her! " Jake snapped.
" She was never yours! " Your mother retaliated.
You feel Jake's heart rip at the seams just by the look of his face. "Betty, you can't do this" He says weakly.
"Tough luck Sully, I can"
"What if we all just take a breather-"
"-Up your ass Norm" with that the door sprang wide open and you truly see what was going on, there was Jake, there was your Mom, there was Norm, there was Max.
And they were all looking at you.
"Luz, Míja, what are you doing up??"
Who the hell was Luz?
Was that supposed to be you? The name she gave you before she died? Before Neytiri came in and gave you a new one? One that stuck so well that even Norm and Max started using it?
You don't answer, still shell-shocked from taking all of this in for the first time.
"Come on, we have to go," She says, grabbing your hand and leading you out of there.
She pulls you out of there, further out of the lab and you pass by a mirror, you see a fleeting image of yourself, you were 8 again, practically skin and bone, fresh and healed bruises everywhere, knobby knees, and sallow skin. How the hell?
"You can't take her away!" Jake yelled. "Please, Betty! you're not thinking this through! Please! " The desperation in his voice was evident, it almost tugged at your heartstrings before you remembered how he treated you, how he snapped at you and yelled at you, restricted you, and berated you.
She keeps pulling you, pulling you out of the lab, your eyes widen as you remember you didn't have an exopack, nothing happens, you didn't choke on the spot, you see the Sully kids the way you remembered them that night- scared, shaken, dejected, calling out your name as you were pulled away by your mother, Neytiri holding all of them back.
You turn to Betty Chacon and the woman she was, your mother, the one who birthed you, and gave you life.
You couldn't believe she was here. You gripped around her hand tightly, following her into the forest where you walked through the trees. Until you hit a branch and your vision turns black.
Your eyes snapped open, realizing you had been pulled out of your encounter with your mother, at first you were angry, it was too short, you wanted her back, until you realize the spirit tree blinked like a lightbulb going haywire, you see your sister convulsing beside you. Anxiety floods your nerves as you jolt her awake, realizing you needed to pull her braid out but when you did it felt like your whole body was on fire.
TRIGGER WARNING !
Fire.
You open your eyes again and you see fire festering all around you.
You see blurry, fleeting images of Quaritch, you hear guttural screams, shrill screams, knife tearing through flesh, splattering, it was blood splattering on the stones. You blinked hard and see your family all lined up in front of you, impaled by sticks, you could hear blood splattering on the floor like you had just hung the washing and not wringing it dry, you run to help them, making a beeline towards Neteyam who was in front of you, but you screamed, realizing he had no face, like somebody has ripped it off his head.
"You're next" And it was Quaritch who was standing behind you, throwing Neteyam's face onto the rock like a slab of wet cloth, right beside the others, whose expressions of terror were imprinted on their faces forever.
END !
You feel your world jolt, when in reality it had been Rotxo shaking you out of your reverie, asking if you were okay or not answer you didn't think of answering back, only swimming up to the surface because you remembered your sister shaking violently.
You and Rotxo resurface to see Neteyam giving Kiri CPR atop his ilu, she gasps, and the next thing you knew Neteyam zooms out of there, Tsireya calling for Tuk to ride with her, leaving you with Rotxo who places a hand on your shoulder.
"Y/N! Y/N are you alright???" He practically demands, his wide eyes full of worry.
You blinked, almost having to untie your mouth open to speak. "We need to go back, my- Kiri- she's-"
"And we will," Rotxo assures you. "Hinewai is here already, see? Do you need a moment?"
You shook your head, propping yourself up on Hinewai's back. "No"
You and Rotxo speed through the waters to make it back to the village where you see throngs of village gathering around the beach, seeing your sister being transferred onto a bamboo gurney, hearing your mother's inconsolable wails wracking her body as Jake held her in his arms, barking orders left and right, Neteyam making sure they were being carried out, Tuk was sobbing, Tsireya stood close by in order to calm her, you couldn't find Lo'ak anywhere, there were too. much. people.
Your chest tightens again.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
ao'nung x fem!sully reader
✷ premise : as tensions rise and your family is forced out of the only home you've ever known, fish boy meets forest girl and the rest is history (tragedy)
✷ warnings : kidnapping, swearing, injury, blood, violence, and death
✷ author's note : I've recently just fell down the ao'nung rabbit hole and holy fuck am I enjoying myself so I decided to write an ao'nung fic to feed my delusions further! also, some italicised paragraphs are flashbacks, I didn't italicise some of the dialogue in between them since I had to give some of the words some emphasis.
part 1 of the SOLD OUT OF LOVE series
Tumblr media
Jake never took a strong liking to your mother when they were still humans, if Grace Augustine was snappy, foul-mouthed, and a know-it-all then your mother was somehow every derogatory word in the English language. Jake and her would lock horns almost everytime they spoke, and if you knew how much fights Grace and Jake got into you can double that number and then you'd have the rough estimate of Jake and your mother's daily rows.
But somehow despite all that, Jake knew what lengths he'd go to just to protect your mother, Bettina "Betty" Chacon, a xenoanthropologist who was sent to Pandora two decades after Grace to further study about the natives, the Na'vi, the environment around them, and the complexity of this symbiotic relationship between their God, Eywa.
Unlike Jake and a few selected others who were granted the permission by the RDA to have Avatar bodies, your mother chose to learn about the Natives the hard way, by exopack, even if Norm and Max built her one and was ready at her disposal, she still opted against using it and said she'd rather be caught dead than having to walk around the forest like skinless cookie monster.
After the Sky People had been defeated and Grace Augustine's demise, the humans left Pandora and were sent back to Earth. There were a few who stayed, loyal to the Na'vi like Norm, and Max, some who were too young to even travel in a cryochamber like Spider who was a curly haired devil zipping around camp, and your mother who couldn't travel back to Earth because she was carrying you.
She had fooled around after her Grace and her older sister Trudy's death, drank, slept with other scientists, soldiers, threw herself in her work, never slept, never ate, always drinking, drinking, drinking, because she feared of what may come when she finally stopped and stood still and let the feelings wash over her like she had been barricading the floodgates this entire time, fearing she wasn't strong enough and that the gates would break open and she'd be caught up in a maelstrom.
She'd finally singed her liver, was what Jake always said when he'd come home to Neytiri after spending an afternoon at the lab, checking up on Betty making sure she was taking care of herself and that he didn't have to skewer Max and Norm like a shish kebab as he thought he would. Alongside Neteyam his budding archer, Kiri his compassionate little girl, and he had to worry about an ex-alcoholic scientist friend of his with a baby on the way.
Still though, it was too quick. How she was just taking a shower and started seizing in the bathroom, how her brain started hemorrhaging as they placed her onto the operating table, her vitals worsening by the second. They were forced to deliver you, even if you weren't ready to come out yet. Jake barely made it, able to hear Betty's last words, how she was with Grace, with Eywa, to take care of you, and tell you to keep going even if the world tells you stand down, to never give a fuck about anyone who made you feel less of yourself, that you were Betty Chacon's kid, and nothing could ever change that.
With one last push your screams rang out, and your mother forever silenced.
Your mother never decided on a name, didn't even want to find out if you were a girl or a boy so Jake chose your name in her stead, Neytiri wasn't fond of it, so she took it upon herself to give you a better name, a Na'vi name. Funnily enough, the second time that day, for a few hours earlier she had given birth to a child as well, a boy, whom they named Lo'ak.
Despite that, you grew up in the lab with Norm, Max, and Spider who was just a couple years older than you and made sure you remembered it. Unlike Spider though, you get winded down easily, which is why he wins all the races, he couldn't even break a sweat from chasing you and tagging you, and in hide and seek you always get found first because he'd be finished counting and you'd still be looking for a place to hide.
"You're doing that on purpose" You called out, narrowing your eyes at your older sister, Kiri who kept sticking her ikran closer to yours. Your ikran Hína, squawking in indignation and swaying to the side.
"Doing what?" She wonders, almost clueless.
You click your tongue against the roof of your mouth. "You're drifting, if you piss off my ikran i'm going to chop your tail off"
She laughs at you. "I'd like to see you try, you skxawng"
Suddenly, Neteyam appears in between the both of you, your ikrans making way. "guys, respectfully, can you two shut up?"
You see Kiri rolling her eyes. "Go mind your own business, jack off"
This makes you snort, watching as Neteyam turns his head towards you. "Yeah, piss off posterboy"
He winces sardonically. "It's really hard not to, seeing as all I can hear from the front is you two yapping"
"We'll keep it down then" You compromised.
"Thank you " says Neteyam, shaking his head finally moving away leaving you and Kiri alone.
As a child it was infuriating to have everyone around you treat you like you were fragile cargo, they still kept on the baby proofing they installed since Spider was born, only doubling it when they realized how a little bruise could swell up and cause you unease and discomfort, if you started sniffling and coughing out of nowhere it meant 2 weeks rest and Neteyam, Kiri, Lo'ak, and Spider couldn't bring you outside, they made the most out of it though, you taught them how to play Uno, as three 6-feet tall tweens force themselves to fit inside your cube sized room.
Due to lack of sunlight your skin would start to turn sallow, you were lanky, every cut bled out abnormally fast, they tested you for hemophilia but when the tests came back you were in the all clear, no hemophilia, no leukemia, no anemia either. They didn't know what was wrong with you.
They traced it to your birth, since your fetus had been placed under a lot of stress from your mother's premature labour and her brain aneurysm it had a lasting effect on you.
You remember how when you were 8 though, you had all snuck out mere minutes before eclipse because Lo'ak and Spider kept bragging about this secret spot in the forest that had the coolest view of the Omaticayan village without having to climb up so high to be able to see it. When it had started to rain Neteyam warned everyone to turn back, realizing that it had already been their curfew and that Max and Norm might be sending out a search party to find you and that you could come visit it tomorrow, but you, who had just left the lab and experienced what rain felt like on your skin for the first time said no and told him to stop acting like a scaredy cat, to which the others were happy to jump on and called Neteyam a scaredy cat as well.
So you all trekked the forest in the dark, Lo'ak started pulling at people's tails and denying that it was him until you gave him a taste of his own medicine and pulled his tail which made him scream and start running away, Neteyam chased after him, so did Kiri, and Spider pulled you onto his back as you ran after them. After a while though, you couldn't hear their screeches anymore so Spider put you down and told you to stay put as he went to go and find them.
You waited and waited but when he didn't come back you decide to find them and you eventually did, all grinning and out of breath, Lo'ak decides to race everybody to the spot and everybody else began running after him, not that they wanted to beat him
Spider was tired at that point and told you that you two should just walk instead, but you take off, feeling the raindrops land on your head and back, the cold wind lapping up at your face as you followed the blurry figures of Neteyam and Kiri until Lo'ak jumped out from behind a tree and scared you, you had jumped in fear, giggling and turning around to scold him but you slipped, fell down, and cracked your skull open, rolling onto the rushing river, the last thing you could hear was Lo'ak screaming your name.
"Eywa, my tailbone is killing me" you whined, only loud enough so that Kiri could hear, but it seemed like her mind was elsewhere.
"I don't think it'll hurt for much longer" She replies, making your eyebrows knit together before you turn your head and finally see the Metkayina village growing larger and larger, more vivid, more detailed. The locals wasted no time in giving you a proper welcome, with spears drawn out and menacing looks.
"Tough crowd" you mutter to Lo'ak, who you felt walking up to you.
He scoffs in agreement. "Tell me about it, someone's gotta show these people how to loosen their collars a little" He comments, earning a little snigger from you.
You slap his arm. "Bro, look at that guy" You tell him, nodding at one of the warriors whose face morphed into a tight sort of enraged expression. Lo'ak sees it and laughs through his nose.
"He looks like he's about to pop a nerve"
"He looks like he's constipated"
The both of you snicker to yourselves again.
Your sprightly mood was short-lived when you spot two teenage boys making their way towards you, the next thing you knew they were laughing right behind you.
"What is that?" One of them says. "Is that supposed to be a tail?"
The taller one out of the two takes your tail in his hands, making you flinch and turn around. "Definitely not, how would you swim with it? Too small, too weak, might as well be a piece of fabric, maybe then it would have more use"
They laugh in unison, feeling your ears turn hot. Once they started walking away you flick your tail harshly against the taller one's backside, you hear him yelp and turn around, his aquamarine eyes narrowing to slits.
"Sorry," You make out, trying to stifle a smile. "It has a mind of its own sometimes"
You think you hear him hiss at you but you were too busy trying to avert Neytiri's sharp gaze to be sure, Lo'ak though, once the two Metkayina boys were out of earshot, started to snort, you clear your throat, an attempt at passing off the giggle that had fortuitously escaped your lips. You were sure Neytiri was a second away from pulling your ears back to the Omaticayan village when the Olo'eyktan arrived on his Tsurak, making his way through the crowd to greet Jake.
They exchange pleasantries, so did you and your siblings, placing your hand to your head and bringing it down to your stomach. The chief did not spare another second to get to the point, wondering why Toruk Makto was here in the Reef with his family.
"We seek Uturu" says Jake as a chorus of gasps went off.
"Uturu? " Ronal repeats in disbelief.
"A sanctuary, for my family" He says, eyeing Ronal as she took Neytiri's tail to further scrutinise it, then turning to Tuk. "Their arms are weak" she backs away from Ronal, scurrying to Jake in a panicked state.
She rounds on Kiri this time, observing her tail. "Their tails are weak," says Ronal, taking the older girl's tail into her hands making her cringe and swat Ronal's arm away. "You will be slow in the water"
Then she grabbed both of Kiri's hands, turning them so her palms faced upwards, ten fingers. "These children, are not even true Na'vi!"
To your horror, she rounds on you and grabs your hand, raising it to the sky so that everybody could see all 4 of your fingers. "They have demon blood!" She screamed, you keep your head down in shame, in anger, you feel your ears drooping as you stared at the sand, hearing the blasphemous gasps and hisses that reverberated around you.
"Look!" Jake exclaimed, raising his hand in front of Ronal. "Look, look! I was born of the Sky People and now I am Na'vi, you can adapt alright? We can adapt"
After what seemed like forever Tonowari finally agreed to let your family stay with them, learn their ways, live life like the Reef People. You try and shake it off, already unpacking your things off of Hína who was no doubt as worn out as you were, Tsireya, the Chief's daughter began leading you the way into the village, you try and ignore the fact that mothers were pulling their children farther away from you, the whispers that followed you, the lingering looks.
Suddenly, you feel the woven pathway beneath you dipping, someone was walking up to you. When you turn around he was already there, the boy, from earlier, donning a prideful smirk as he sized you up, observing the amount of things you had been carrying. "How are you carrying that? I'd expect your arms to snap off by now"
"How are you walking? I'd expect your body to sway with that swelled head of yours"
You hear him hum. "You'd be surprised, I have been doing just fine the past 16 years"
"I pity your mother then" You tell him, not looking his way.
"Why?" He asked.
"She hasn't found a cure for you yet" you reply, not bothering to look at his reaction. "Whatever Eywa has cursed you with, she definitely did not hold back" you chuckled. "I have not seen anyone who has made her so angry to have cursed you with such a malady and allowed you to keep walking the face of Pandora, maybe if I keep telling you the truth, unlike your parents who keep feeding you lies and falsehoods then maybe your head would shrink to the actual size of your brain"
You continue. "I haven't been here long enough but I pity your people, not only is their future Olo'eyktan a half-wit, but you'd be having trouble finding your next Tsahík, every woman must be running the other direction with that hideous face of yours"
"I wouldn't be too sure about that" He laughed, waving at a few girls who were gathered by the entrance of a Marui, they see him and they giggle amongst themselves.
You turn to him. "Are the ladies of Awa'atlu so easily won over by a charming smile and nothing else?"
He tilts his head to the side, the edges of his mouth curling up to a smirk. "Charming? You find me charming?"
You scoffed at him. "I find you as attractive as a pile of íkran feces, but then again you are what you eat"
He blinked at you. "I will have you know that you are still speaking to the son of the Olo'eyktan-"
You stop walking and he screeches to a halt. "-do you think that I would drop to my knees, kiss at your feet and apologise?"
He half-shrugged, watching his eyes flick downward then upward to your face. "I would not hold it against you" He replies.
"I do not bow down to anyone" You told him. "Especially not to a man"
"Well then you haven't met me yet"
You feel your jaw tighten. "Whatever jackass, you aren't worth my time anyway" you spat, turning around and walking after your family.
He laughs. "I look forward to our talks in the future Forest Girl!"
Shouting another insult his way would catch your family's attention, so you flipped him the bird until you rounded a corner and disappeared from his line of sight.
"Yo, where were you?" Lo'ak wonders when you suddenly appeared at his side.
About to throw hands with the Olo'eykyan's son, you don't say. "I just had to catch my breath, nothing serious" you tell him instead.
You see his face soften. "You good baby sis? I could take a few, lighten your load-"
You shake your head at him adamantly. "No, no, I'm good, I'm serious," this does not convince him as he messes up your hair making you slap his hand away, pointing at his face as he laughs. "if you touch my shit I'm gunna kick your ass so hard you'll be pulling tail hairs out of your mouth for a month"
"Fine," He laughed, straightening himself up. "suit yourself"
You began walking again, allowing Lo'ak to go first as you tried to bring up the rear. Just when you've given him a false sense of security you tugged at his queue making him lose his balance and hiss, you bolt out of there, dancing past your siblings, ignoring their complaints before Lo'ak could even touch the end of your tail.
It had taken them a long time before they managed to find your body, Neteyam and Lo'ak braving the gushing river to find you while Spider and Kiri ran back to the village to get some help. Your exopack had been shattered, they weren't sure for how long, Neteyam had to perform CPR on you until Jake and the others came.
They transported you back to the lab in a helicopter, you remember that. Everytime they increased the voltage of the defibrillator the faster Lo'ak's mind went, the faster Spider's heartbeat went, Kiri was inconsolable, Neteyam was on the verge of a breakdown, Jake tried to keep it together, gain some composure if it was even possible but ultimately failed.
He had lost your mother 8 years ago to a head injury, if he loses you as well then Eywa really had it in for him.
When they brought you back to the lab you had been under a medically induced coma for several months. The Sullys visited you a lot, Neteyam telling you stories of the hunts he'd go on, how he promised he would teach you archery when you woke up, Kiri confiding her deepest secrets to you, what plants she'd discovered, what poultices she learned to make with her grandmother, how in the dead of night Spider would bring a pillow and a blanket and camp next to your bed if he couldn't sleep, Jake would come and tell you stories of your mother, how she would have wanted you to fight, how she would have wanted you to stay, so did Neytiri, she'd sing you songs, pray for you, she even started you a song cord and told you that when you woke up you and her would continue it together.
Though out of all of them, the one who visited you the most was Lo'ak, he was the one who made you fell, and ever since that day guilt had overcame him swallowed him whole, he'd sit with you for hours, apologising, telling you it didn't matter if you didn't wanna play with him anymore, if you didn't wanna talk to him anymore, if you didn't want to watch old cartoons with him anymore, if you hated him forever, as long as you woke up.
"Why does she have to suffer so much Dad?" He asked Jake as they watched over you one night. "She never met her mom, she never met her dad, she's always sick, now she's going to die and it's because of me"
"She isn't going to die" Jake interjects.
Lo'ak shook his head, staring at his hands. "I heard Max and Norm, Dad, they said if she didn't wake up soon she'd be in a ve-vegetitative state forever" He managed, as his breathing became more ragged. "I didn't know what they meant but then Spider told me... and- and I don't want that to happen Dad, she's only 8, she hadn't even reached the- the two number age yet an-and she's going to die and it's all my fault"
Jake places a hand over Lo'aks shoulder. "Look son, don't let your guilt eat away at you, everything happens for a greater reason. Y/N wouldn't want to see you so down in the dumps all of a sudden would she? No, she wants to see you happy-"
A fat tear rolls down Lo'ak's cheek. "-But it's so hard to be happy dad," He sniffled, looking up at Jake with glossy eyes. "I just want her to wake up, I don't want her to go yet" He sobbed, rolling his hands into fists as he wipes the tears from his eyes. "I don't wanna pretend I'm happy, I don't want to keep hoping she's coming back, I want her to come back now" Lo'ak wailed.
Jake takes Lo'ak's shuddering body into his arms, letting him cry on his chest as he placates him, running a hand over his head as he looks at you, so pale, so still, lying on the gurney with a tube sticking out of your mouth and wires attached to your arms, the soft beeping of the machine and the wheezing of your breathing apparatus.
"Yeah, so do I"
Ironically enough, eclipse started to dawn on you when your father called all of you back to your Marui for a family meeting, much to Lo'ak's chagrin.
"Remember?" Neteyam admonishes, grabbing Lo'ak's arm and pulling him inside the pod. "Family meeting?"
"Alright, come on, take a knee let's go"
You do as he says, glancing at your big brothers who followed suite.
"Okay," Jake begins. "I need you kids on your best behavior" He says, his accent slipping through.
"I mean it, learn fast, pull your weight" He looks at Lo'ak. "Don't cause trouble" Then, he looks at you. "Got it?"
You couldn't help but sigh. "Yes sir"
You ears pick up on sniffling from your left, you turn your head and see Tuk crying. "I want to go home" She says, wiping her eyes with her wrists.
"Tuk," your Dad began, taking her little hand in his. "This is our home now, okay? We're gunna get through this, we do this, we have eachother's backs"
"What does your father always say?"
You resist rolling your eyes at the catchphrase that comes to mind. "Sullys stick together" You mumbled, quieter than your brothers.
"That's right, Sullys stick together, now this time with some feeling"
On Eywa. "Sullys stick together" You say with your brothers.
"Alright" says your father, seemingly satisfied. "Dismissed"
You all stand up, Tuk and Kiri getting out of the hut first, your older sister convincing your youngest sister that if she stopped crying they could go play in the shallow water and find seashells, this instilled a bright spark in Tuk as she began jumping in joy in no time.
You decide to hang out with your brothers again, just like what you had been doing before you've all been called into the pod.
"Y/N, hang back for a sec"
This makes all 3 of you stop walking, your brothers turn to you and you nod at them in acknowledgement, pointing your chin towards the beach. Neteyam nods as well, heading out, Lo'ak touches your forearm before he follows Neteyam.
You turn to Jake who places an arm on your shoulder, leading you towards one of the driftwood stumps that acted as chairs.
He looks at you, peering over his amber eyes. "What's up Lite Brite? You doing okay?"
You wince at that nickname, the nickname your father called you ever since you were a kid, even before you were Na'vi. "I'm fine" You insist.
"Hey, don't lie to your old man"
"I'm not" You insist, looking down at the floor.
"I know it's a lot of change baby," He began, you turn to look at him. "It's a lot to deal with at the moment but you're strong, I know you are"
You let out a scoff of disbelief making Jake chuckle in confusion. "What?"
"You kept telling me that when I was a kid you don't need to keep telling me now"
"The advice I give ain't half bad kid, you gotta learn that it wouldn't be a bad idea to start listening to me once in a while, yeah?"
"Yeah" You smile, ducking your head.
Your Dad grinned, tussling your hair. "Yeah" He replied fondly. "You're my strong little lady"
Tumblr media
"Should we just... follow them in?"
You were the first one to stop leaning over the diving platform to look at your brothers, specifically to Neteyam who had been standing on your right. "Well yeah, unless you're too much of a pussy to jump in"
He looks up and laughs, walking up to you to place both his hands on your shoulders. "If you're so keen on following them in baby sis, maybe you would like to go in first?"
You shrug his hands off, pushing his chest away from you as he cackles. "Not a chance, jackass"
"It's only fair Y/N" Lo'ak chimes in. "They're gunna be wondering why we took so long to follow them"
You groan, your shoulders slumping. "On Eywa, when will I ever catch a break?"
"Hey, Y/N what is that?" Lo'ak asks, pointing at the water.
"What's what?"
"There!" He exclaims, pointing at it again. "It's right there! Can't you see it?"
You frown, leaning further into the dock, trying to scan the water for anything that your brother might be pointing at. "I don't see anything"
You tried to turn around to look at Lo'ak but you feel Lo'ak's arms wrap around you, feeling the both of you fall over the dock and into the water, Neteyam following shortly afterward. You swim up to Lo'ak to tug at his ear, a swarm of bubbles escaping Neteyam's mouth as he laughs. The three of you spot shadows coming from above you and try to swim away before Kiri or Tuk body slams into you.
You swim after the Metkayina kids into the reef but soon after you feel your lungs start to burn. You look at your siblings, already swimming up to the surface, you try and follow them up, gasping for air once your head broke the water. Once you all managed to catch your breath you dip your heads into the water again, seeing Tsireya smile up at you, doing something with her hands. You frown and you shrug at her, turning to your siblings for support but realizing they had no clue what she was saying either. Watching as they swam up to the surface to join you.
"You're too fast, wait for us!" Tuk wailed, rubbing at her eye.
"Just breathe" says Tsireya.
"You are not good divers" Ao'nung intones. "Maybe good at swinging through trees but-" He stops to laugh at his own joke but was quickly silenced when Tsireya slaps the side of his head.
"Come on bro" Lo'ak groaned, turning to look at Neteyam, almost as if he was waiting for him to say something.
"We don't speak this finger talk" says Neteyam. "We don't know what you're saying"
"I will teach you" Tsireya tells him.
"Where is Kiri?" Rotxo suddenly wonders. Everyone starts looking for her, calling for her, except for Ao'nung who was too busy looking at his reflection in the water to know who Kiri was.
What a fucking parrot.
Tumblr media
It was the second month of you in a coma when you start crashing all of a sudden, your usually quiet room now had several scientists running in and out trying to bring you back for it was a win lose situation, if they played their cards right they might be able to stabilize you and keep you in your medically induced coma or they might just lose you altogether.
It was Jake who decided to tell Norm and Max to transfer you into an Avatar body, the Avatar body they've been building for you since your 1st birthday.
It evened out the odds a little bit when they found a heartbeat in your new body, they rushed you out of the lab and brought you to the Tree of Souls, Jake knowing all too well where he's seen this before. Mo'at was reluctant, she's seen how frail you were, how weak you were as a child, she did not want to keep Jake's hopes up when things didn't go the way he wanted it to. So they waited, and waited, and waited, hoping that you were strong enough to pass through the Eye of Eywa.
And you were.
Just barely.
Ever since then you'd been living with Jake and Neytiri, having your own hammock, taming your ikran, not needing to wear shoes which was fun now that Norm and Max weren't yelling at you every 10 seconds to put some on, it felt nice that you could catch up to Lo'ak and Neteyam, that you didn't have to catch your breath every so often, that you could learn how to fight.
Your human self would never be able to survive breathing training with the Metkayina, let alone with Ao'nung.
The next day bright and early, you, your siblings, the Olo'eyktan's children, and Rotxo all met up at the beach per the agreement the night prior. Tsireya had paired herself up with Lo'ak and Tuk, paired Rotxo with Kiri and Neteyam, leaving you and Ao'nung.
"I do not understand what I am doing wrong" you huffed, ridding your face of water.
"Everything " Ao'nung replies. "Everything you are doing is wrong "
"I'm breathing from my gut like you told me to, I'm calming my mind like you told me to, is there a possibility that you might just be a shit teacher?"
He rolls his eyes. "Attitude won't help you here, Forest Girl"
Your eyes widen a centimeter in half-shock. "Oh and you will?"
"Just shut up and try again" He snapped, nodding at the seabed. "Go on" He insists when he sees your irritated expression.
You huff again. "If I pass out and don't make it back up it's going to be your fault"
Ao'nung gives you a smile. "Good, the world could use a little less of you anyway"
You wanted to roll your eyes at him but decided not to. With an inhale, an exhale, and a bigger inhale you dive down again, trying to feel as calm and as free as possible, maneuvering yourself through the schools of fish to reach the seabed quicker, but a troupe of the jellyfish looking creatures started to block your path towards the reef, you tried swimming up, no go, you decide to swim under them but you were too afraid to get stung, your only option was to wait them out but once your chest started to feel like it was about to cave in on itself you defeatedly swam up to the surface, gasping for air.
"I can't- I can't do it" you manage, feeling the tumultuos rise and fall of your chest as it yearned for air, hearing Ao'nung's despondent groaning.
"Are you even trying?" He exclaimed.
"I am!" You retalliate tiredly, rubbing your eyes as it stung from the salt.
"Then act like it!" He yelled. "It's bad enough I am stuck teaching a bunch of half-breeds I have to be paired with the densest most incompetent student ever"
You couldn't help the scoff that left your lips; you couldn't believe you had to deal with some snotty airhead when you could've had someone as understanding as Rotxo or as sweet as Tsireya. "do the world a favour and go fuck yourself"
Ao'nung narrows his eyes at you. "I've seen babies breathe better underwater than you"
"Keep running your mouth like that and I'll stop you from breathing forever" You threatened him acidly.
"I'd like to see you try"
You cock your head to the side. "Don't threaten me with a good time"
Just then, Ao'nung sighs greatly at you, raising his hand above the water to pinch the bridge of his nose. "Look, Forest Girl, are you afraid?"
You blinked. Then you blink again. You open your mouth to retaliate with some witty comeback but no sound left your lips, you shut it closed, trying to save whatever was able to salvage of your dignity. "I'm not afraid" you finally tell him.
"If you aren't afraid then diving would be easy for you, fear is clouding your mind, it is holding you back" He reasoned with you, for a second you almost believed that you weren't talking to a boy that looked like a radioactive frog, he was actually starting to make sense. It frightened you. "Nothing will come at you stupid girl, we are too close to the shore to be near real danger"
There it was.
"So i just... need to grow some balls and do it?"
Ao'nung's face contorts. "Grow... what? "
"Dosen't matter" You quickly reply, hoping he'd learn to brush it off.
"Try again," Ao'nung starts. "Remember to calm yourself Forest Girl, there will not be anything to hurt you here, the way of water has no beginning and no end, the sea is around you and in you. Remember that"
You nod reluctantly, turning your gaze to the distorted seabed below you.
He peers over his eyes to look at you. "What... do you want me to hold your hand on the way down?"
You give him a look. "No thanks... I might contract some disease"
He laughs. "Then go"
You take a big breath and dive again, feeling yourself being one with the sea, gliding and drifting, keeping your mind blank as you finally reached the reef, propelling yourself through the mounds of coral that grew from the sand. You were able to spot the shell that Ao'nung threw into the water this morning, quickly snatching it and swimming up to the surface, feeling the sunlight pepper your skin as you resurfaced.
"I did it! I did it!" You exclaim, waving the shell in Ao'nung's face as you hear him laugh, loud and raucous, only fueling the triumphant fire that roared in your chest.
"I'm impressed" He says, taking the shell from you, your fingertips feathering over the other. "Maybe you aren't so incompetent after all"
You feel a small smile stretching across your face. "Maybe not"
