Sopranos Sunday: A Call To Action

Are you feeling morose about the end of HBO’s Succession? Does the current state of television, vaguely defined by binging shows in a week and mostly forgetting them, make you sad? Have you always wanted to watch The Sopranos, considered by many to be the greatest show of all time, but you just haven’t gotten around to it? Well, I’m like you, and I have an idea for you, inspired by this tweet I saw yesterday:

This struck me as a good idea for tumblr, because it would involve many things tumblr loves, namely:

Prestige TV (See, Succession)

Serialized Narratives (See, Dracula Daily)

Mobsters (See, Goncharov)

Doing things collectively (See, Dracula Daily and Goncharov)

And commitment to the bit (See, this whole website)

So. Let’s do it. This Sunday, June 11th, let’s start a journey back to turn of the millennium New Jersey. That evening, around 8-10 PM (prestige tv timeslot) go to HBO Max or an… illicit… website, and turn on episode 1 of The Sopranos. Blog about it. Speculate about what might happen in future episodes (it’s more fun if you don’t spoil yourself). The next Sunday, watch episode 2. And so on, and so on. This will be a Commitment (The Sopranos has 86 episodes, so at a pace of one a week that’s nearly two years) but I believe in the tenacity of tumblr users. And I think we’re ready for the odd Breaking Bad memes but about The Sopranos now.

I know a lot of people refuse to watch Employee of the Month (Sopranos 3.4) because of what happens to Melfi, and yes it is an incredibly graphic scene and episode. But honestly this episode is sacred to me. It’s so masterfully performed by the entire cast and Lorraine Bracco got robbed for not getting the Emmy here. She actually tore her shoulder during the stairwell scene and had to have laparoscopic surgery to repair it— that’s how hard she went. The episode plays with what it means for her to straddle the two worlds of her profession and the Mafia, and to have to make a hard choice during the most vulnerable time in her life. It’s so so real. Bracco made us all feel so strongly during this episode- not just about what happened to Melfi, but at the end we are all at the point where we are actually feeling the intensity of what it meant to grapple with her decision. Who among us didn’t gasp or even yell at the very end when she says “no”? People are still debating her decision over 20 years later- that’s how powerful this episode and her performance was. And the tenderness with which Tony cradles and comforts her at the end is just soooo satisfying.

I love shows, of course I would love new shows but not at the cost of writers and actors not making a living wage, so I'm more than happy to hunker down and wait it out as long as it fucking takes. I just think it's so funny that studio execs are trying to scare monger, "oh but what will the consumers do when they have nothing new to watch" as if a significant portion of this website's userbase isn't already watching hit 1999-2007 mob family drama "The Sopranos" at the pace of one episode a week, as if it's airing for the first time, just for the bit.
