Finding My True Strength
I wanted touch upon Shion's inner feelings during her training to become a swordswoman in Unsheathe the Inner Thunder for a while and recently found the motivation to write this following Noel Hayase's recent illness which she has since recovered from. So have some Shion angst with some KaeShi fluff at the end.
Warnings: Spoilers for Saber up to episode 26, angst, and self-doubt issues.
Tumblr media
"That's not right."
Daishinji grabbed Shion's arm and adjusted her position again. "From one." He said.
Shion swallowed hard, feeling the pressure starting to build. She swung the wooden blade forward for what felt like the hundredth time that day. "One."
The swordsmith didn't say anything. She swung again. "Two." And again. "Three."
Daishinji-san hasn't stopped me yet. I must be doing better. I could do this… She thought to herself before she swung again. "Four."
"No." Daishinji knocked her blade with his own. "You didn't swing far enough. Start again from one."
Tears welded up in Shion's eyes and she blinked them away. She was exhausted, it felt like every movement she made was criticized. Daishinji had taken forever just forcing her to hold a good stance, reprimanding her every time she fidgeted or adjusted which even Naoto thought was a little harsh.
Now the goal was to get to ten basic strikes without a mistake. Shion got back into position and steeled herself.
She did four successful swings like before. Her hands shook, but Daishinji didn't say anything. Naoto noticed and gave Shion a soft smile of encouragement.
The room they were in was cold. There was a small window and Shion could see the snow blowing around outside.
"Don't shift your grip." Daishinji said as he grabbed her wrist. He adjusted her fingers until he was satisfied. "From the beginning."
Naoto could tell Shion wanted a break. She wasn't even moving around that much, but she felt physically drained.
"Don't you think you're being a little hard on her, Tetsuo?" She asked her chosen warrior. "Why don't we switch to another exercise?"
"I know, but this is what all new swordsmen go through." He sighed. "We'll move on as soon as she finishes this. Every lesson builds on the last. The next move is a variation on this. If she doesn't have the base down, she'll only get worse not better."
"I can still hear you two you know." Shion said through gritted teeth as she swung. She needed to focus. Don't let my grip slip. Keep my feet planted firm. Eyes forward. Look at the target.
She had gotten in six successful swings when the clock in the corner chimed loudly. She turned to look at it and Daishinji's sword bounced off her forehead lightly.
"Don't let yourself get distracted." He said.
"What time is it?" Shion asked as she squinted at the clock while rubbing her forehead. "How long have we've been training for?"
"It's eight. We've been training for an hour."
"Only an hour? It felt like it was longer that." Shion checked her watch, its hands on eight and twelve. "I'm starting to get why only one in hundred who can hear the swords make through training."
Daishinji decided to give her a break from the technical training by letting her read some important manuals that can help her with the training. It wasn't going to be fun, but it would be a nice break from repeating the same move over and over again.
Despite knowing that the books she had to read weren't going to be as engaging as the romantic stories she's read, Shion found herself stuck on the first chapter. The point was processing the information, but she'd lost her place on the page she was on. She scanned down the page again finding where she'd left off.
The farther she read, the more obvious it became that Daishinji had been quoting the book. But she quickly realized that she can't afford to skip over anything even as she flipped back to the previous page to figure out something about stance.
"How many chapters did you get through?"
She jumped as Daishinji appeared behind her without warning. She wished she could lie, but he was already leaning over to check for himself.
"I got to page ten." She said quietly. The first chapter was twenty pages. She knew because she'd checked several times as she slogged through the first couple pages.
"I'd hoped you'd have gotten farther." Daishinji sighed. "I don't see much purpose in moving forward if you haven't gotten to chapter two yet. There's a lot of important information there."
Shion looked down as tears built in her eyes again. I can't do anything right, can I? She thought to herself. I'd expected the training to be physically difficult, but I can't even get to the strenuous part. Maybe everyone was right, and I should give up…
"I'm heading home, I'll prove myself by tomorrow." She said, trying to keep her voice from shaking. "I have to go to work too."
"That's fine." Daishinji assured. "Juggling your regular obligations with training is important. Take the book and get through the first three chapters before tomorrow morning. Ryo will do his trials then."
She looked up at him. "So, you do want me to come back?"
"If you're willing to put in the work, you can continue." The swordsmith responded before turning and exiting the room.
Shion stood and reached for the heavy tome, but Naoto picked it up for her. "Don't worry, I'll help you carry this."
"Thanks, Naoto." Shion sighed in relief.
Later at her and Kaede's apartment that night, Shion focused on reading the book, clearing up the confusion she had earlier and carefully reading the first chapter. As she began reading the second chapter, she noticed Kaede turning on the music box that was on the nightstand by her bed. The soft music it played touched her heart.
"Do you think I can become a swordswoman?" She asked.
Kaede turned to look at her. "Of course I do. You have the potential, I know it."
Shion looked down at the floor, feeling her tears begin to fall. "But no one else seems to think I can. Even Daishinji-san has doubts since I couldn't live up to his expectations during training today."
She sobbed softly as her tears plopped onto her hands. Kaede looked at her with a sympathetic smile as she walked up to her and sat down next to her on the couch. She held her roommate's hand gently, brushing tears off of it as she did.
"I believe in you though, Shion-chan." She said with a soft tone. "As long as you keep a strong wish in your heart, you can do it."
Shion gazed into her soft brown eyes. "Even if I can't transform like you did?"
"Aw, don't say that… I'm sure you'll be able to one day." Kaede gently brushed her hand across her face, wiping away her tears. "Then we can fight together, wouldn't that be amazing?"
Shion nodded as she smiled. "Yeah, it would. You're right about all of this, Kae-chan. I shouldn't be doubting myself like this."
Her roommate simply returned the smile before the two of them embraced each other in a soft, warm hug. Outside the window of their apartment, a shooting star soared by. Shion watched it from her spot on the couch, her smile growing brighter.
"I wish I can always be by your side forever." She whispered.
Kaede hugged her tighter yet gently. "Me too. We'll make that wish come true together."

Happy Birthday Shion!
I’ve been discussing birthdays for my characters with Tale of @tokuteasings and settled on today being Shion’s birthday. So, in honor of her, have some short and sweet fluff centering on her celebrating with Kaede and everyone else.
Warnings: None really aside from implied spoilers for Saber up to episode 35.
Tumblr media
Mother’s Day didn’t seem like a big deal to Shion. Except for helping her friends at college pick out gifts for their own moms. She knew she would really feel the love when she becomes a mother herself, so she wasn’t really bothered by it.
However, the day to celebrate mothers also meant that her birthday, just three days after Mother’s Day, was around the corner. Shion considered herself lucky it was only one week after the birthday of her beloved princess Kaede on the ninth of May.
The last few days have been insane. She thought. I wonder if Kae-chan and the others had time to prepare for my birthday after what the Sword of Logos’ deluded leader tried to pull off if at all.
Luckily for her, any concerns she had disappeared when she entered the Northern Base and was greeted with party poppers going off around her, covering her in confetti and streamers.
“Happy birthday Shion!” Everyone shouted together, clapping their hands and cheering.
“Y-You guys remembered!” She laughed, removing confetti and streamers off herself.
“Of course we did, Shion-chan.” Kaede said with a smile, putting a silver tiara on her head. “We would never forget.”
“Here you go Shion! I had it made special just for you~” Mei said, holding out a delicious looking cake, a single candle glowing on top of it, and decorated with large pink roses made of icing and a chocolate plague reading Happy birthday Shion!
“Now, blow out your candle and make a wish!” Touma told her, holding out his phone along with Kaede to take a picture of the moment. Shion nodded, and blew out the candle, Homura and Naoto cheering and everyone else clapping when she did.
“Congratulations, Espada.” Sophia said with a gentle smile.
Shion returned the smile. “Thank you, Sophia.”
“Here, let me take this before something happens to it and we can’t eat any of it.” Tetsuo offered, taking the cake away with Naoto following him cheerfully.
Kaede walked up to Shion, holding out a bouquet of flowers consisting of red and pink roses, white lilies, and sunflowers. “Here, I picked out the flowers myself.”
“Thanks, Kae-chan.” Shion said, taking the bouquet from her. “The Shindais are on Rider duty to keep an eye on Master Logos, right?”
“Yeah. Should he make a move, they’ll let us know.” Kaede confirmed. “For now, your happiness is essential.”
Shion blushed pink at being acknowledged as important by her roommate. This felt a lot like the fairytales she loved as a child. She imagined Kaede looking at her lovingly, dressed in a beautiful white and pink dress fit for a princess, herself in a similar fairytale dress. She has been planning to confess her feelings for a while now, and she intends to tell Kaede soon.
“Kaede, everyone is waiting for you and the birthday girl.” Yukina called out, snapping Shion out of her thoughts.
“We’ll share the photos with Kento and Yamina later.” Raito added. “Hopefully seeing you guys happy will convince them that there is hope.”
“Alright, come on Shion-chan, time to cut your cake!” Kaede told her, holding out a hand to Shion.
Shion accepted her hand and held it tightly as the two went to join the others for a celebratory toast and food.

May have gone a bit overboard with this, but I managed to finish this sketch of Naoto's human form. There were a lot of ideas going through my head, but I think I managed to create a good enough concept.

A Song from My Crying Heart
When Tale of @tokuteasings introduced me to the song Good Riddance from Hades (All versions in the video), I immediately fell in love with it. It’s so hauntingly beautiful! She also mentioned it could be a song that Naoto and Tetsuo would sing as a sort of hymn to their fallen friends and the days of old, hence the concept of this one-shot focused on them.
Warnings: Spoilers for Saber up to episode 21, angst, past trauma, grief, and possible Hades spoilers, I guess? I haven’t played the game, but figured I should mention that just to be safe.
Tumblr media
Tetsuo took a deep breath as he stood in front of the door to Kaede and Shion’s shared apartment. He knew this wasn’t going to be easy. He might’ve had no problem with confronting Touma, but with Kaede, it was a lot more personal.
He hesitated to knock the door for a moment, but he did, and Yukina opened the door, giving a sympathetic look upon seeing him and quietly letting him in. Kaede and Shion were quick to notice.
“Ah, Daishinji-san.” Kaede said with a smile which faded upon seeing the soft look in his eyes. “Is there... something you want to talk about?”
Tetsuo simply nodded, looking down for a moment. “Kaede... I-”
“It’s about our current situation, isn't it?” Kaede asked. “We were going to ask you and Ogami-san about it as well.”
So, she understands why I’m here. Tetsuo thought before speaking in a soft tone. “Kaede, I want to duel with you. Just the two of us.”
Shion and Yukina looked at each other in disbelief while Kaede was confused. “Huh...? For what reason?”
“I know how difficult this is for you.” Tetsuo’s left hand lightly brushed over Suzune’s handle. “But you should know that you can’t save everyone.”
“I understand that...” Kaede sighed as she looked down. “There is also a deep burden we carry that only grows heavier the more we continue to fight. You know that all too well, don’t you Daishinji-san?”
“Yes.” He confirmed, locking his gaze on her. “You carry the burden of those you’ve failed to save when you swing your blade. The more you fight, the heavier the burden gets. This is what it means to be a swordsman.”
“But what about carrying the burden of another?”
Kaede’s words caught Tetsuo off guard. He kept his gaze on her as he stepped back a bit, eyes widened in surprise. “What...?”
“Big sis carried a similar burden when she became a swordswoman.” She walked over to him and gently grabbed his arm. “She knew she could only do so much to protect people. She gave her life protecting me to prove it. I never expected to inherit her legacy as a swordswoman back then, I wanted to become a singer so my songs could inspire hope even in the darkest moments. So, when the Fubuki reawakened to me, I knew I had to have the courage to fight so there can be a future I can pursue my dreams in.”
“Aw, Kae-chan...” Shion muttered, she and Yukina giving sympathetic looks to her roommate.
Tetsuo could feel himself shaking for a moment as Kaede let go of his arm and spoke, “Daishinji-san, if this is what’ll convince you to fight alongside me again, then I’ll do it.”
She really wants me to believe she’s not a bad person... Tetsuo thought as he nodded his head and silently left the apartment, feeling himself shake even more as he did.
He found himself gazing at a fountain alone. Kaede and Shion told him they were at this particular fountain taking photos together before they were caught up in the Megid’s first attack after their reemergence, leading to Yukina reappearing to Kaede and enabling her to become a Rider.
I can’t believe I’m actually going through with this... He thought, feeling his tears begin to fall. Ayaka... I’m sorry. Me and Kaede know you would’ve never wanted this to happen. We’ll make things right... I... I promise.
Overwhelmed by grief and heartbreak, Tetsuo sobbed softly, his tears falling onto Suzune. Its emblem glowed, as if in response to his sorrow, and a pink ball of light flew out, spinning around him, leaving a trail of pink sparkles as it did.
He looked up to see the ball of light before it landed near him and expanded outward for a moment. When the light faded, Naoto stood in front of him in her human form. She walked up to him and gently brushed her hand across his face, wiping away his tears.
“You don’t have to be so hard on yourself, Tetsuo.” She said in a gentle tone. “Our duel with Touma confirmed he’s the one your grandfather said would unleash Rekka’s full power, I’m sure Kaede can prove she can handle the burden to create a future for herself and her friends.”
Tetsuo held her hand that wiped his tears away, taking a deep breath to even his breathing. “Yeah, you’re right. It’s just that this duel is very personal to me, Naoto. After Kaede proves herself, we’ll leave the organization.”
“And we’ll be able to fight by Kaede and Touma’s side again.” Naoto finished. “Though it wouldn’t hurt to pay tribute to the friends we lost all those years ago, would it?”
Tetsuo shook his head, that was all the confirmation Naoto needed as she sighed and began to sing a somber song that the two knew by heart. As she sang, she gently held his hand as she pulled him away from the fountain a little bit.
Her voice was as gentle as a lullaby, a reassuring voice telling Tetsuo that everything will be okay. Even though several of their friends are now gone, all they can do is keep moving forward while remembering the times they shared. He felt Naoto grip his hand tighter, and instinctively began to sing with her.
While he sang, he held Naoto’s free hand and the two began dancing together, spinning around holding each other’s hands. Naoto smiled as she listened to her chosen warrior sing, happy she could take his mind off the current situation and find time for the two of them to have this moment.
Tetsuo gripped her hands tightly and Naoto simply smiled before the two of them began to sing together as they continued dancing, their voices in harmony with each other. Every step they took following the melody of their voices.
By the time the two finished the song, they were embracing each other in a warm hug. They looked at each other, softly smiling at being able to dance and sing as a way to cope with the grief and the burden they both carry. Tetsuo really needed that, and he’s glad that Naoto could provide him that comfort.
“Thank you, Naoto.” He whispered.
Naoto hugged him gently. “Anything to make you feel better.”

Trivia - Arch Seirei Artemis and the Seirei
I knew doing this trivia in particular was gonna be lengthy and figured might as well put in trivia for all the Seirei while I’m at it. Arch Seirei Artemis is still the primary focus of the trivia though. It’s not gonna be perfect, but oh well.
Warnings: Spoilers for Saber, and some implied self-doubt and guilt issues.
Tumblr media
General
The Seirei are magical entities akin to angels from Wonder World who are connected to the Seiken and enable transformation into a Kamen Rider.
Their name kanji (聖霊) means ‘holy spirit’, befitting their association with the Seiken.
They were inspired by the Heavenly Saints from Magiranger.
They are where the Riders’ elemental magic is drawn from.
They are capable of taking on a human form when living on the real world. Their true forms vary depending on the Rider and their associated element.
Their true forms are usually visible in each Rider's henshin sequence. (Hence the transformation sequences of Saber, Blades, and Espada.)
Only Seiken wielders and those with high exposure to magic (Like Shion and Mei) can hear the Seirei's voices from within their Seiken.
All their true forms are humanoid in physical appearance and appear behind their user the moment the transformation is triggered.
The swordsmen call their Seirei by their names and sometimes call them by their Seiken's names. Sometimes when they transform (especially in some of the badass scenes) they shout this. "(Seirei name), Seirei of (Element)! I call upon your power! Come!" For example, Kaede would shout "Yukina, Seirei of Ice! I call upon your power! Come!" For group henshins, they would each say their Seirei's name and element and shout "We call upon your powers! Come!" in unison.
Arch Seirei Artemis (Played by FRUITS ZIPPER’s Amane Tsukiashi)
She is based off the goddess of the same name from Greek mythology and is a lot friendlier than her counterpart.
She often appears as an advisor and observer to the SoL Riders.
She used to have a group of hunters to help her watch over the Sword of Logos and assist them in battle, but Yumeko betrayed her and slaughtered them after becoming Nimcha, forcing Artemis to defeat and seal her in the Moonlight Diamond.
She only vanquished Lennox from Wonder World on Tassel’s advice.
During Touma's henshin sequence into Xross Saber, Artemis descends down and does a motion similar to that of "granting a blessing" onto him.
During the days before Kyomu was sealed in the Book of Ruin, there was an ancient Seiken which granted its user the power of pure raw magical energy that makes up the elemental magic of all the present-day Seiken, the Mahouken Sakkaku (Magic Sword Illusion), which was considered the most powerful of all the Seiken, even surpassing Saikou and Kurayami in terms of power. As such, its wielder was considered the most powerful swordsman in all the land. However, great power came with great insanity.
While most details have been lost to time, archives tell that the Seirei of the Mahouken was a humanoid six-armed being whose body seemed to be made of pure raw magic energy and the previous Arch Seirei. The Seirei of the Mahouken fed off of its wielder's will and fueled their more psychopathic tendencies to extremes. Sakkaku's wielder thought that since no swordsman can hold a candle to his power, he should be the only swordsman because of this. However, unbeknownst to him, there was a Seiken that could surpass even Sakkaku's god-like power and magic, the Haouken Xross Saber, Artemis’ Seiken.
Back then it was much like all the other Seiken, containing the power to alter reality and gives its user the elemental magic of the stars themselves. Its wielder at the time was a very powerful mage who had been studying how to split magical energy into separate types of magic.
When word of the Mahouken wielder's atrocities came to the mage, both he and Artemis were determined to put an end to this being's reign of terror. An intense battle between the two swordsmen wielding these magic swords took place which devasted the world around them. When the dust finally settled, the mage and Artemis had emerged victorious.
Not wanting any other swordsmen going insane with power, the mage used the Haouken and his special magic to destroy Sakkaku and turn its energy into the elemental magic everyone knows. Then, he sacrificed his own life to split the Haouken into magical energy, infusing into elemental energies that would become Seiken that would one day unite and summon the Haouken in its full glory to the one who wields the first Seiken forged by human hand, stronger than ever before.
He entrusted Artemis with protecting both the real world and Wonder World and watching over the Seiken wielders who would one day summon the Seiken she was connected with, stronger than even before, making her the new Arch Seirei.
Ever since, Sakkaku was lost to time due to its destruction and subsequent energy redirection and has become a cautionary tale to all members of the Sword of Logos while Artemis had been watching over the Sword of Logos, waiting for the day where heroes would rise and summon her sword to them, blessed with power beyond anything one can imagine.
Tassel saw the moment Artemis was made the new Arch Seirei and truly believed she would regain her full power one day as her deceased wielder prophesized and is fully supportive of her despite her initially being uncertain of her newfound role.
She was uncertain of becoming the new Arch Seirei at first due what the Sakkaku’s Seirei had done, but with Tassel’s support she grew into a courageous and responsible Arch Seirei, guiding the Sword of Logos and watching over them.
Ice Seirei Yukina (Played by Hikaru Yamamoto)
A kind-hearted Seirei like a princess who cares deeply about her friends.
Her name kanji means ‘snow flower’ (雪華), refencing her kind nature.
She felt guilty about Ayaka’s death, especially since Kaede had to witness it happen, even if she didn’t directly see it. She wants to make amends for it when her Seiken reappeared to Kaede in the present day.
Thunder Seirei Raito (Played by Satsuki Nakayama)
Serves as a mentor figure for Shion when she took up his Seiken.
Was amazed at Shion’s determination when she first became Espada.
His name kanji (雷当) means ‘thundering justice’.
Sound Seirei Naoto (Played by FRUITS ZIPPER’s Luna Nakagawa)
She has the appearance of a cutesy idol singer in both human and her true form.
Her name kanji means ‘south sound’ (南音), a play on words on ‘south bound’ and refencing her being the Seirei of Sound.
While she was asleep during her Seiken’s repair, she could communicate with Tetsuo via telepathy often by singing lullabies.
Flame Seirei Homura (Played by Rin Takanashi)
She found Touma’s desire to make people happy through books adorable, prompting her to escape the darkness Daichi had trapped her in 15 years ago.
Her name kanji (炎) means ‘flame’ in reference to her element.
She comes across as a little hot-blooded, but she’s really just passionate about helping Touma get used to being a swordsman.
Water Seirei Mizuhara (Played by Atsushi Shiramata)
He holds the memories of his Seiken’s past users close to him.
His name kanji (水原) means ‘water field’.
He’s easily one of the most adaptable Seirei in Wonder World.
Land Seirei Riku (Played by Eiji Akaso)
He’s the physically strongest of the Seirei, partially due to his element.
His name kanji (陸) means ‘land’ in reference to the element of earth.
He understands why Ogami prefers physical attacks over magic the most.
Wind Seirei Fuutaro (Played by Ryo Matsuda)
Due to his element of wind, he is faster than most Seirei.
His name kanji (風太郎) means ‘wind strong’.
