Finding My True Strength
I wanted touch upon Shion's inner feelings during her training to become a swordswoman in Unsheathe the Inner Thunder for a while and recently found the motivation to write this following Noel Hayase's recent illness which she has since recovered from. So have some Shion angst with some KaeShi fluff at the end.
Warnings: Spoilers for Saber up to episode 26, angst, and self-doubt issues.
Tumblr media
"That's not right."
Daishinji grabbed Shion's arm and adjusted her position again. "From one." He said.
Shion swallowed hard, feeling the pressure starting to build. She swung the wooden blade forward for what felt like the hundredth time that day. "One."
The swordsmith didn't say anything. She swung again. "Two." And again. "Three."
Daishinji-san hasn't stopped me yet. I must be doing better. I could do this… She thought to herself before she swung again. "Four."
"No." Daishinji knocked her blade with his own. "You didn't swing far enough. Start again from one."
Tears welded up in Shion's eyes and she blinked them away. She was exhausted, it felt like every movement she made was criticized. Daishinji had taken forever just forcing her to hold a good stance, reprimanding her every time she fidgeted or adjusted which even Naoto thought was a little harsh.
Now the goal was to get to ten basic strikes without a mistake. Shion got back into position and steeled herself.
She did four successful swings like before. Her hands shook, but Daishinji didn't say anything. Naoto noticed and gave Shion a soft smile of encouragement.
The room they were in was cold. There was a small window and Shion could see the snow blowing around outside.
"Don't shift your grip." Daishinji said as he grabbed her wrist. He adjusted her fingers until he was satisfied. "From the beginning."
Naoto could tell Shion wanted a break. She wasn't even moving around that much, but she felt physically drained.
"Don't you think you're being a little hard on her, Tetsuo?" She asked her chosen warrior. "Why don't we switch to another exercise?"
"I know, but this is what all new swordsmen go through." He sighed. "We'll move on as soon as she finishes this. Every lesson builds on the last. The next move is a variation on this. If she doesn't have the base down, she'll only get worse not better."
"I can still hear you two you know." Shion said through gritted teeth as she swung. She needed to focus. Don't let my grip slip. Keep my feet planted firm. Eyes forward. Look at the target.
She had gotten in six successful swings when the clock in the corner chimed loudly. She turned to look at it and Daishinji's sword bounced off her forehead lightly.
"Don't let yourself get distracted." He said.
"What time is it?" Shion asked as she squinted at the clock while rubbing her forehead. "How long have we've been training for?"
"It's eight. We've been training for an hour."
"Only an hour? It felt like it was longer that." Shion checked her watch, its hands on eight and twelve. "I'm starting to get why only one in hundred who can hear the swords make through training."
Daishinji decided to give her a break from the technical training by letting her read some important manuals that can help her with the training. It wasn't going to be fun, but it would be a nice break from repeating the same move over and over again.
Despite knowing that the books she had to read weren't going to be as engaging as the romantic stories she's read, Shion found herself stuck on the first chapter. The point was processing the information, but she'd lost her place on the page she was on. She scanned down the page again finding where she'd left off.
The farther she read, the more obvious it became that Daishinji had been quoting the book. But she quickly realized that she can't afford to skip over anything even as she flipped back to the previous page to figure out something about stance.
"How many chapters did you get through?"
She jumped as Daishinji appeared behind her without warning. She wished she could lie, but he was already leaning over to check for himself.
"I got to page ten." She said quietly. The first chapter was twenty pages. She knew because she'd checked several times as she slogged through the first couple pages.
"I'd hoped you'd have gotten farther." Daishinji sighed. "I don't see much purpose in moving forward if you haven't gotten to chapter two yet. There's a lot of important information there."
Shion looked down as tears built in her eyes again. I can't do anything right, can I? She thought to herself. I'd expected the training to be physically difficult, but I can't even get to the strenuous part. Maybe everyone was right, and I should give up…
"I'm heading home, I'll prove myself by tomorrow." She said, trying to keep her voice from shaking. "I have to go to work too."
"That's fine." Daishinji assured. "Juggling your regular obligations with training is important. Take the book and get through the first three chapters before tomorrow morning. Ryo will do his trials then."
She looked up at him. "So, you do want me to come back?"
"If you're willing to put in the work, you can continue." The swordsmith responded before turning and exiting the room.
Shion stood and reached for the heavy tome, but Naoto picked it up for her. "Don't worry, I'll help you carry this."
"Thanks, Naoto." Shion sighed in relief.
Later at her and Kaede's apartment that night, Shion focused on reading the book, clearing up the confusion she had earlier and carefully reading the first chapter. As she began reading the second chapter, she noticed Kaede turning on the music box that was on the nightstand by her bed. The soft music it played touched her heart.
"Do you think I can become a swordswoman?" She asked.
Kaede turned to look at her. "Of course I do. You have the potential, I know it."
Shion looked down at the floor, feeling her tears begin to fall. "But no one else seems to think I can. Even Daishinji-san has doubts since I couldn't live up to his expectations during training today."
She sobbed softly as her tears plopped onto her hands. Kaede looked at her with a sympathetic smile as she walked up to her and sat down next to her on the couch. She held her roommate's hand gently, brushing tears off of it as she did.
"I believe in you though, Shion-chan." She said with a soft tone. "As long as you keep a strong wish in your heart, you can do it."
Shion gazed into her soft brown eyes. "Even if I can't transform like you did?"
"Aw, don't say that… I'm sure you'll be able to one day." Kaede gently brushed her hand across her face, wiping away her tears. "Then we can fight together, wouldn't that be amazing?"
Shion nodded as she smiled. "Yeah, it would. You're right about all of this, Kae-chan. I shouldn't be doubting myself like this."
Her roommate simply returned the smile before the two of them embraced each other in a soft, warm hug. Outside the window of their apartment, a shooting star soared by. Shion watched it from her spot on the couch, her smile growing brighter.
"I wish I can always be by your side forever." She whispered.
Kaede hugged her tighter yet gently. "Me too. We'll make that wish come true together."

OKAY NOW THAT IM AT MY PC!!! ahem Kaeshi and Romance and Smile!!!!!!
Sweet KaeShi fluff coming up Tale~!
Romance 🌹 - What’s the most romantic thing your f/o? Furthermore, what’s the most romantic thing you have done for your f/o?
Kaede with Shion: She became the fairytale princess that Shion always saw in her. Wearing a beautiful white dress and dancing with her in a romantic garden as she sang a cute little love song she wrote. Telling Shion how grateful she was for meeting her and how she'll always care for her.
Shion with Kaede: She would provide freshly picked flowers from her and her mother's garden and a warm hug that truly warms Kaede's heart as a way to show her support for her. She knows chasing your dreams can be difficult but with loving support, that dream might as well come true. A true supportive lover to the end.
Smile ☺️ - What about your f/o makes you smile every single time? Furthermore, what’s something you do that makes your f/o smile every time?
Kaede always finds Shion's love for fairytale endings and happily ever afters really endearing. She also appreciates Shion being there for her, her support genuinely makes her feel warm and fuzzy inside. Her existence makes Kaede smile every time she looks at her.
The same applies to Shion when she looks at Kaede. Her kind-hearted nature and love for her family never fails to warm her heart. Kaede is like a real-life fairytale princess to Shion and the time they spend together is something she never takes for granted.

Of course! I'll be glad to tell you more about my OCs! Lets me know you're genuinely interested in my Saber AU. There's a lot but I'll try my best and feel free to ask me questions about my OCs.
Kaede Shinaki/Kamen Rider Lobera (II) - The protagonist of my AU. A sweet and kind 22-year-old college student and aspiring singer who gets caught up in the war in-between the Sword of Logos and the Megid. Using the Sessouken Fubuki and its token Wonder Ride Book Snowfall Beauty (based on a yuki-onna), she transforms into the Swordswoman of Ice and Snow, Kamen Rider Lobera. Her birthday is May 9th. She is played by Yui Sakurai.
Shion Akamatsu/Kamen Rider Espada (III) - Kaede's 21-year-old closest friend and apartment roommate with a love for fairytale endings who has feelings for her which she later confesses during the final fight with Bahato and Yumeko. Expressing her wish to be by Kaede's side and not feel helpless to help her friends, she wields the Raimeiken Ikazuchi to transform into the third Swordswoman of Thunder, Kamen Rider Espada. The Raiju no Arashi Wonder Ride Book (based on Raiju) is exclusive to her as Espada. Her birthday is May 17th. She is played by Noel Hayase.
Arch Seirei Artemis/Yukari - The Seirei associated with the Haouken Xross Saber and the current princess of the Seirei. After inheriting her title from the previous Arch Seirei upon killing it after it made its wielder go berserk, she was tasked by her previous wielder with watching over the Sword of Logos and guiding them to the day her Seiken would reawaken to them. She goes by the name Yukari while posing as a human. She is played by Amane Tsukiashi.
Sound Seirei Naoto - The Seirei associated with the Onjuuken Suzune and partner to Tetsuo. She is a kind and supportive girl who holds a relationship with Tetsuo that is deeper than most other Seirei. She is capable of using her singing voice as a weapon if she wants. She is played by Luna Nakagawa.
Yumeko/Kamen Rider Nimcha - An ancient swordswoman and former huntress for Artemis who was sealed in a crystal called the Moonlight Diamond before reemerging in the present day. Her low self-esteem and desire to prove herself as the strongest leads her to using the Mushikiken Madoromu and its token Wonder Ride Book Lucid Chameleon (based on a chameleon) to transform into the Swordswoman of Dreams, Kamen Rider Nimcha. She is played by Suzuka Chinzei.
Lennox/Kamen Rider Lennox - The beautiful princess of the Megid and their only female general. She was the Seirei of Crystals who turned evil by anger and remorse in the aftermath of an accidental murder of a rouge swordsman she and Tassel were trying to save and is the mastermind behind the Megid’s whole plot and the manipulation of Isaac and Storious. Using the Purgatorio Wonder Ride Book and the Dooms Driver Buckle, she transforms into the Swordswoman of Endings, Kamen Rider Lennox. She is played by Mana Manaka.
Ayaka Shinaki/Kamen Rider Lobera (I) - Kaede's older sister and the previous Swordswoman of Ice and Snow. Ice Seirei Yukina - The Seirei of the Sessouken Fubuki and partner to Kaede. She is a kind-hearted girl like a princess who cares deeply about her friends. Thunder Seirei Raito - The Seirei of the Raimeiken Ikazuchi and partner to Kento and Shion. He serves as a princely mentor figure to Shion when she took up his Seiken and was amazed at her determination when she first became Espada. He is played by Satsuki Nakayama.
Flame Seirei Homura - The dragon Seirei of the Kaenken Rekka and partner to Touma. She was sealed into the darkness by Daichi fifteen years ago but reawakened around the same time that Yukina did after she found Touma's desire to make people happy through books adorable. Water Seirei Mizuhara - The feline Seirei of the Suiseiken Nagare and partner to Rintaro. He is very adaptable to new wielders of his Seiken while holding memories of his past ones close to him. He is played by Atsushi Shiramata.
Land Seirei Riku - The golem Seirei of the Dogouken Gekido and partner to Ryo. He is the physically strongest of the Seirei known for being stubborn when choosing new wielders of his Seiken and he understands why Ogami prefers physical attacks over magic the most. He is played by Eiji Akaso.
Wind Seirei Fuutaro - The ninja Seirei of the Fuusouken Hayate and partner to Ren. He is very tactical with his speed and magic which make him faster than most Seirei and he can tolerate Ren's gremlin antics, as he knows he's still learning to understand true strength. He is played by Ryo Matsuda.
Light Seirei Hikaru - The knight Seirei of the Kougouken Saikou and partner to Yuri and one of the first two Seirei awakened by Tassel. He fused with Yuri after Bahato was sealed in the Book of Ruin, making the former a hybrid in the process. He doesn't have much experience with other Seirei due to his time in Avalon. He is played by Yuki Kubota.
Dark Seirei Yamina - The dark dragon Seirei of the Ankokuken Kurayami and one of the first two Seirei awakened by Tassel. She has no problem finding new wielders for her Seiken with her power of precognition which let her access the World of Darkness. She has partnered with Hayato, Daichi, Kento, and Sophia. She is played by Nana Mori.
Smoke Seirei Noroko - The fairy Seirei of the Eneiken Noroshi and partner to Reika. She possesses a near-stoic demeanor that is hard to break through who knows her magic's limits, often being undeterred by stronger opponents countering her. She is played by Yuria Haga.
Time Seirei Tokiwa - The merman Seirei of the Jikokuken Kaiji and partner to Ryoga. In contrast to Noroko, he is slightly insane with a deep pride in his magic who can be quick to anger and Ryoga is one of the few who can keep him in check. He is played by Kohei Murakami.

Happy Birthday Shion!
I’ve been discussing birthdays for my characters with Tale of @tokuteasings and settled on today being Shion’s birthday. So, in honor of her, have some short and sweet fluff centering on her celebrating with Kaede and everyone else.
Warnings: None really aside from implied spoilers for Saber up to episode 35.
Tumblr media
Mother’s Day didn’t seem like a big deal to Shion. Except for helping her friends at college pick out gifts for their own moms. She knew she would really feel the love when she becomes a mother herself, so she wasn’t really bothered by it.
However, the day to celebrate mothers also meant that her birthday, just three days after Mother’s Day, was around the corner. Shion considered herself lucky it was only one week after the birthday of her beloved princess Kaede on the ninth of May.
The last few days have been insane. She thought. I wonder if Kae-chan and the others had time to prepare for my birthday after what the Sword of Logos’ deluded leader tried to pull off if at all.
Luckily for her, any concerns she had disappeared when she entered the Northern Base and was greeted with party poppers going off around her, covering her in confetti and streamers.
“Happy birthday Shion!” Everyone shouted together, clapping their hands and cheering.
“Y-You guys remembered!” She laughed, removing confetti and streamers off herself.
“Of course we did, Shion-chan.” Kaede said with a smile, putting a silver tiara on her head. “We would never forget.”
“Here you go Shion! I had it made special just for you~” Mei said, holding out a delicious looking cake, a single candle glowing on top of it, and decorated with large pink roses made of icing and a chocolate plague reading Happy birthday Shion!
“Now, blow out your candle and make a wish!” Touma told her, holding out his phone along with Kaede to take a picture of the moment. Shion nodded, and blew out the candle, Homura and Naoto cheering and everyone else clapping when she did.
“Congratulations, Espada.” Sophia said with a gentle smile.
Shion returned the smile. “Thank you, Sophia.”
“Here, let me take this before something happens to it and we can’t eat any of it.” Tetsuo offered, taking the cake away with Naoto following him cheerfully.
Kaede walked up to Shion, holding out a bouquet of flowers consisting of red and pink roses, white lilies, and sunflowers. “Here, I picked out the flowers myself.”
“Thanks, Kae-chan.” Shion said, taking the bouquet from her. “The Shindais are on Rider duty to keep an eye on Master Logos, right?”
“Yeah. Should he make a move, they’ll let us know.” Kaede confirmed. “For now, your happiness is essential.”
Shion blushed pink at being acknowledged as important by her roommate. This felt a lot like the fairytales she loved as a child. She imagined Kaede looking at her lovingly, dressed in a beautiful white and pink dress fit for a princess, herself in a similar fairytale dress. She has been planning to confess her feelings for a while now, and she intends to tell Kaede soon.
“Kaede, everyone is waiting for you and the birthday girl.” Yukina called out, snapping Shion out of her thoughts.
“We’ll share the photos with Kento and Yamina later.” Raito added. “Hopefully seeing you guys happy will convince them that there is hope.”
“Alright, come on Shion-chan, time to cut your cake!” Kaede told her, holding out a hand to Shion.
Shion accepted her hand and held it tightly as the two went to join the others for a celebratory toast and food.

Figured I’d give Tale of @tokuteasings a little treat tonight with this transcript of a hypothetical series first episode for my Saber AU. This takes place around the same time as episode 1 in canon, so I tried my best to keep things as original as possible while also throwing in hints of that episode and adding my own twist to it. Tale, if you’re reading this, hope you enjoy this treat!

A Song from My Crying Heart
When Tale of @tokuteasings introduced me to the song Good Riddance from Hades (All versions in the video), I immediately fell in love with it. It’s so hauntingly beautiful! She also mentioned it could be a song that Naoto and Tetsuo would sing as a sort of hymn to their fallen friends and the days of old, hence the concept of this one-shot focused on them.
Warnings: Spoilers for Saber up to episode 21, angst, past trauma, grief, and possible Hades spoilers, I guess? I haven’t played the game, but figured I should mention that just to be safe.
Tumblr media
Tetsuo took a deep breath as he stood in front of the door to Kaede and Shion’s shared apartment. He knew this wasn’t going to be easy. He might’ve had no problem with confronting Touma, but with Kaede, it was a lot more personal.
He hesitated to knock the door for a moment, but he did, and Yukina opened the door, giving a sympathetic look upon seeing him and quietly letting him in. Kaede and Shion were quick to notice.
“Ah, Daishinji-san.” Kaede said with a smile which faded upon seeing the soft look in his eyes. “Is there... something you want to talk about?”
Tetsuo simply nodded, looking down for a moment. “Kaede... I-”
“It’s about our current situation, isn't it?” Kaede asked. “We were going to ask you and Ogami-san about it as well.”
So, she understands why I’m here. Tetsuo thought before speaking in a soft tone. “Kaede, I want to duel with you. Just the two of us.”
Shion and Yukina looked at each other in disbelief while Kaede was confused. “Huh...? For what reason?”
“I know how difficult this is for you.” Tetsuo’s left hand lightly brushed over Suzune’s handle. “But you should know that you can’t save everyone.”
“I understand that...” Kaede sighed as she looked down. “There is also a deep burden we carry that only grows heavier the more we continue to fight. You know that all too well, don’t you Daishinji-san?”
“Yes.” He confirmed, locking his gaze on her. “You carry the burden of those you’ve failed to save when you swing your blade. The more you fight, the heavier the burden gets. This is what it means to be a swordsman.”
“But what about carrying the burden of another?”
Kaede’s words caught Tetsuo off guard. He kept his gaze on her as he stepped back a bit, eyes widened in surprise. “What...?”
“Big sis carried a similar burden when she became a swordswoman.” She walked over to him and gently grabbed his arm. “She knew she could only do so much to protect people. She gave her life protecting me to prove it. I never expected to inherit her legacy as a swordswoman back then, I wanted to become a singer so my songs could inspire hope even in the darkest moments. So, when the Fubuki reawakened to me, I knew I had to have the courage to fight so there can be a future I can pursue my dreams in.”
“Aw, Kae-chan...” Shion muttered, she and Yukina giving sympathetic looks to her roommate.
Tetsuo could feel himself shaking for a moment as Kaede let go of his arm and spoke, “Daishinji-san, if this is what’ll convince you to fight alongside me again, then I’ll do it.”
She really wants me to believe she’s not a bad person... Tetsuo thought as he nodded his head and silently left the apartment, feeling himself shake even more as he did.
He found himself gazing at a fountain alone. Kaede and Shion told him they were at this particular fountain taking photos together before they were caught up in the Megid’s first attack after their reemergence, leading to Yukina reappearing to Kaede and enabling her to become a Rider.
I can’t believe I’m actually going through with this... He thought, feeling his tears begin to fall. Ayaka... I’m sorry. Me and Kaede know you would’ve never wanted this to happen. We’ll make things right... I... I promise.
Overwhelmed by grief and heartbreak, Tetsuo sobbed softly, his tears falling onto Suzune. Its emblem glowed, as if in response to his sorrow, and a pink ball of light flew out, spinning around him, leaving a trail of pink sparkles as it did.
He looked up to see the ball of light before it landed near him and expanded outward for a moment. When the light faded, Naoto stood in front of him in her human form. She walked up to him and gently brushed her hand across his face, wiping away his tears.
“You don’t have to be so hard on yourself, Tetsuo.” She said in a gentle tone. “Our duel with Touma confirmed he’s the one your grandfather said would unleash Rekka’s full power, I’m sure Kaede can prove she can handle the burden to create a future for herself and her friends.”
Tetsuo held her hand that wiped his tears away, taking a deep breath to even his breathing. “Yeah, you’re right. It’s just that this duel is very personal to me, Naoto. After Kaede proves herself, we’ll leave the organization.”
“And we’ll be able to fight by Kaede and Touma’s side again.” Naoto finished. “Though it wouldn’t hurt to pay tribute to the friends we lost all those years ago, would it?”
Tetsuo shook his head, that was all the confirmation Naoto needed as she sighed and began to sing a somber song that the two knew by heart. As she sang, she gently held his hand as she pulled him away from the fountain a little bit.
Her voice was as gentle as a lullaby, a reassuring voice telling Tetsuo that everything will be okay. Even though several of their friends are now gone, all they can do is keep moving forward while remembering the times they shared. He felt Naoto grip his hand tighter, and instinctively began to sing with her.
While he sang, he held Naoto’s free hand and the two began dancing together, spinning around holding each other’s hands. Naoto smiled as she listened to her chosen warrior sing, happy she could take his mind off the current situation and find time for the two of them to have this moment.
Tetsuo gripped her hands tightly and Naoto simply smiled before the two of them began to sing together as they continued dancing, their voices in harmony with each other. Every step they took following the melody of their voices.
By the time the two finished the song, they were embracing each other in a warm hug. They looked at each other, softly smiling at being able to dance and sing as a way to cope with the grief and the burden they both carry. Tetsuo really needed that, and he’s glad that Naoto could provide him that comfort.
“Thank you, Naoto.” He whispered.
Naoto hugged him gently. “Anything to make you feel better.”

Unsheathe the Inner Thunder
Figured I’d give some bonus Shion content with this one-shot on how she became Espada from her perspective. This one-shot is based on the Ao3 fic Set the Narrative on Fire which sees Mei become Espada. Check it out after this, it’s incredible!
Warnings: Spoilers for Saber up to episode 26, Kento’s trauma, and probably slightly more than Rider-typical violence. I wrote this months ago so I’m not fully certain on this.
Tumblr media
There was blood on Shion's hands. It wasn't her. It was Touma's. Okay, maybe a little of Kaede's and Daishinji's. Some of it might've even been from Ogami. But none of it was hers.
She and Mei had just patched them all up after yet another battle she couldn't directly participate in. Touma was in bad shape. He'd nearly lost control of that new form of his and it has wrecked his body. His breathing was shallow and pained as he dozed on the couch while Mei looked over him in his bookstore.
How many times did she have to drag him off the battlefield already? And how much longer can her emotional support keep up?
"Are you okay?" Daishinji asked. Though he hadn't been nearly as bad, he'd still been of bloody mess. He was curled up in one of the reading chairs, facing away from her.
"Of course I'm not!" She shouted, causing Daishinji to wince and cover his ears.
Oh right, enhanced hearing. Shion thought before speaking in a quieter tone. "There isn't much I can do out there. Seriously, I watched you all get the stuffing beat out of you and there wasn't anything I could do to help."
"Shion-chan..." Kaede muttered, looking a little less worse for wear. She was sitting on another reading chair, looking at her.
Touma twitched in his sleep and Shion gritted her teeth. She was sick of this. Sick of seeing her friends suffer like this. Sick of being unable to help. Sick of being a damsel in distress when the Megid did come after her.
"Why can't I have a sword?" She asked.
"We don't have spare swords just lying around." Daishinji ran his fingers over his own sword. "At least not ones powerful enough for these threats."
"But you do have one."
Shion's words made Daishinji tense. He looked over at her, eyes darting down when she tried to meet his gaze. "No." He said firmly.
"Ikazuchi!" She ran over to him and grabbed his arm, shaking him roughly. "No one's using it. I could take over as Espada-"
"No!" Daishinji shouted. He covered his face with his hand as he stood. "It doesn't work like that."
A shouting match was barely avoided by Touma jolting upright, hacking and wheezing. By the time she and Mei helped even out his breathing, Daishinji had vanished when she turned to ask more questions.
Next thing she knew, she was in the Northern Base to get clean clothes after Touma got blood on her clothes.
And this was a recent addition to my wardrobe as well... She thought as she went to Rintaro's room, feeling like it wasn't right to take the clothes of a dead man by going into Kento's room.
His room was immaculate and there was a change of clothes resting on his desk, neatly folded. Grabbing the shirt kicked up the dust that'd settled over them.
Shion stumbled away, sneezing and coughing. As she moved away from the cloud of dust, her back hit a bookcase and two objects clattered to the ground.
They were Wonder Ride Books. She knelt to pick them up. Lamp Do Alangina and a book she had never seen before. Yellow. This was Kento's as well... But why would Rintaro leave these here when Reika labeled Touma-san a traitor? She thought.
The cover of the unknown book had some sort of wolf-like creature. The words on the front were hard to understand at first but what this was about was obvious. Raiju, the companion of Raijin, the Shinto god of lightning... Shion thought. Should I give this to Touma-san or even Kae-chan? Give them a new weapon to their arsenal? Or...?
She made her way to Kento's room in the base. The door was closed, but not locked.
What's the worst that could happen? She thought as she looked around the missing swordsman's room. If it's too much for me, I'll admit defeat, but what if it isn't? If Kaede can pull it off, then so can I.
The sword was locked in a chest under Kento's bed. Shion only knew this because Mei had told her while she was visiting during her shift. Rintaro had hidden the key behind one of the stones in the southern wall of the room, Mei didn't tell her which one because she couldn't remember which stone it was.
She had to change clothes by the time she found the right spot. The stone slipped out and landed on her foot. She hissed like a cat as she pushed the stone off and grabbed the key. She had enough cafe mishaps and stepped onto battlefields enough times to knows her toes were completely fine, but it was painful enough to force her to hobble over to the chest.
The key fit in the old lock, but it took a bit of strength and jiggling the lock around to unlock the chest, a horrid creaking sound echoing as she lifted the lid.
But there it was. A Swordriver and Kento's Seiken, Ikazuchi, laying on a pile of blankets.
She held these magical swords before. Heck, she and Mei even helped Yuri transform. But this time felt different.
It was far heavier than she thought it would be. She felt static lifting her hair as she picked both items up and inserted Ikazuchi into the driver. The air crackled with electricity stemming from this Seiken's magic as she put it to her waist.
The weight grew heavier as the belt wrapped around her. Sparks flew from her fingers as she opened both Wonder Ride Books.
I'm not sure this will work. Shion thought. The Raiju one isn't even the right book. I know Kento always used the Aladdin-based book but the Wonder Combo has the book based on Cerberus. I've never even seen this book until now.
Regardless of her uncertainty, she slammed the books into the corresponding slots of the Swordriver. It flashed and grew so heavy; she almost fell to the ground. No... She thought. 'Heavy' isn't the right word for this... It's more like this is pulling me in, draining my energy while doing so... Still worth a shot... Right...?
Her knees shook as she grabbed the handle of the blade while the standby played. More electricity was spinning around her, crackling and sending sparks flying.
"Henshin!" She shouted, pulling the sword as hard as she could. Lightning flooded her veins before she collapsed.
When she woke up, she swore she smelled like ash, every hair standing on its end.
"What were you thinking?" Ogami's voice came from behind her.
She combed her hair down and turned around, feeling pain in every muscle as she did. Ogami was giving her a sharp glare. She could see Kento's Seiken sitting on the table behind him. It was covered in a thick layer of soot.
Seriously, what had she been thinking? Did she really think things would be so simple?
"I just wanted to help you guys more." She couldn't look up to meet Ogami's stern glare as she tried to get her hair to lie flat.
"I know that." Ogami's voice softened. "I know you mean well, Miss, but this is dangerous. The Seirei don't like their Seiken being handled by anyone that isn't their current wielder."
"Even if the current wielder is dead?" Shion asked.
Ogami frowned as he picked up Ikazuchi, turning it back and forth in his hands. "That depends."
"What does that mean?"
"It means, the Seirei are fickle sometimes. They choose who they will let wield them. Normally, when a Seiken chooses a swordsman, its Seirei will stay with them until their death." Ogami put the sword down, dusting soot off his hands. "Then the Seirei will mourn its master's death. It will resist anyone it finds to be inferior or against their ideals. It could take years before a suitable replacement is found, and it's unlikely to be some passing human."
"So it resisted me because Raito wasn't ready for a new user." Shion sighed. I should've figured that would happen. I'm no Touma or Kaede after all.
"You did well given the circumstances." Ogami said.  He slapped her on the shoulder in a way that was meant to be gentle but sent shocks of pain through her chest.  "We pick protegees and train them for years specifically with the intention of passing on the Seiken. Even then, it can take months for the Seirei within to warm up to a new wielder."
Some time later, still undeterred from becoming a swordswoman, Shion decided to try asking Daishinji again.
"Are you trying to discourage me after all this time?" She asked upon hearing that the Sword of Logos stopped trying to convince people to leave their entire life behind on a fraction's chance they'd succeed in the guild decades ago.
"I'm being realistic." Daishinji said. "I don't know if you've noticed, but there's a lot going on right now. I can't waste time on a student that has a one in a ten thousand chance of succeeding."
That fact surprised her. "Is the chance really that low?"
"Yes." Daishinji pulled out Suzune. "For one, only one in a hundred humans can hear the Seiken."
"As in the voice of the Seirei within?" Shion inched towards the Seiken of Sound. That was an invitation, right? He wanted to see if she could hear the Seirei of his Seiken.
Daishinji turned away, holding the sword out of her reach. "No funny business." He said sternly. "Don't try to lie. I can tell if you're faking."
She nodded. With a heavy sigh, Daishinji turned and handed her his sword.
It was different than Ikazuchi had been. It was oddly light. Each touch reverberated through the whole weapon. The whole thing felt almost hollow as she held it up to her ear.
Daishinji rolled his eyes as she pressed the strange metal against her ear.
"It's a sword, not a conch shell." he said.
"I know that." Shion pouted as she lowered the sword. I didn't know that. I thought hearing was literal. Maybe this was subtler than that?
She tapped Suzune lightly and felt the vibrations go through it. Tapping different areas caused different sounds. It was a musical weapon befitting its element, she wondered if she could play it. She slid her fingers across, tapping as she went. She'd practiced guitar a little bit in her free time, so she found herself beating out a familiar melody.
Suzune vibrated in her hand. She could hear Naoto vocalizing as if in happiness. She glanced up at Daishinji, who was looking down at his Seiken with a smile on his face.
"Congratulations, you're one in a hundred." He said, extending his hand. She handed over the weapon.
"That's it?" Shion asked. "You don't sound surprised."
"I suspected as much." Daishinji said. "You fit in well here. That's the easy part. A very simple yes or no, are you even capable of handling a sword?"
She titled her head. "What's the hard part?"
"Of the one in a hundred that can hear the swords, only one in those hundred make it through training. It's not something to be taken on lightly." The swordsmith responded.
"Quit it, Tetsu. You're not gonna scare her away with that." Ogami shouted from the landing above. "She's made up her mind. Let me run her through some trials, see how she does."
"I'll be running the first trial." Daishinji didn't look up at Ogami. He moved over to a bookcase, scanning the shelves.
Ogami sighed loudly.  "Come on, you know it makes more sense for me-"
"You're going to let her off easy." Daishinji pulled out several books.  "You're too soft on her."
"I'm not soft on anyone!" Ogami stomped down the stairs.
"Yes, you are." The swordsmith danced away when his colleague stormed up to him.
"I'm nice, not soft."
"You're too nice and you're soft."
Shion watched the two men bicker back and forth. Knowing that they won't reach calming point in the argument anytime soon, Shion cupped her hands around her mouth and shouted, "When are these trials going to start?"
Both men stopped in place and glanced at each other.
"Tomorrow morning." Daishinji said firmly. "Be here by seven."
I'm not complaining about the early time. Some of my co-workers get up earlier than that. Shion thought. Daishinji-san's testing me. I'm not going to stumble over something as simple as that.
"I'll be there."
The training was tough, and she had to juggle that and her waitress job at Magi Manga Cafe while doing so. But when Kento was revealed as Calibur, an opportunity arose.
She was watching Touma's childhood friend fight Reika as Sabela while holding the Swordriver containing Ikazuchi. She knew that no matter who won this fight, someone was losing their Seiken. She didn't care about the reason; she wasn't going to let that happen. Touma is in a vulnerable position, she wants to protect him and fight by Kaede's side.
Suddenly, as if in response to her thoughts, she heard Ikazuchi's voice, its Seirei, Raito, speaking to her. "I feel your desire to protect the Swordsman of Flames and fight with the Swordswoman of Ice..."
She gasped softly as he continued. "Given these circumstances, I shall grant you my power. Wield my blade to your heart's content, my chosen warrior."
This is it. Now or never.
Shion put the Swordriver to her waist. It wrapped around her, heavy and tight. Electricity crackled around her as she looked up.
Calibur was staring at her. She couldn't see his eyes, but she could still feel the heat in Kento's expression.
He stepped towards her, blocking several of Sabela's blows without turning his head. Kaede, Touma, Mei, Rintaro, Daishinji, and Ogami all looked at her in disbelief.
Realizing she haven't grabbed the Wonder Ride Books, she lunged towards the table they were was on, feeling thunderous magic running through her veins. Kento lunged in the same direction.
"Shion-chan!" She heard Kaede yell her name as she swept the books off the table.
She stumbled back as Kurayami came down right where her hand had been, sending splinters everywhere. She covered her face with one hand, but from there, both of her hands were moving almost on their own accord.
She flipped open the Wonder Ride Books. Lamp Do Alangina! Raiju no Arashi! Katsute inazuma no yō ni hayaku ugoku koto ga dekiru ōkami ga imashita... (雷獣の嵐! かつて稲妻のように速く動くことができるオオカミがいました…, Thunder Beast's Storm! Once there was a wolf capable of moving as fast as lightning strikes...)
Lightning curled around her, her hair frizzed and her skin tingled. Everyone was staring at her now, moving towards her, but they moved slow. It felt like time had nearly stopped as she slammed both books into the belt.
It was like last time. Shion felt heavy as the sword sucked her in and she found herself in a library surrounded by lightning. But it didn't feel like the last time at all. The electricity felt like it was flowing with her rather than against her. She grabbed the hilt and pulled. Ikazuchi Battou! (黄雷抜刀!)
"Henshin!" She shouted before she performed a single vertical uppercut slash as Raito copied her movement behind her before transforming into a genie and a wolf made of yellow light and circle her, forming the armor with the slash forming the visor. Kaminari Kemono! Raiju Do Alangina! Ikazuchi Nisatsu! Denki to negai no chikara kara umareru, aratana-ryoku ga tokihanata reta! (雷獣! 雷獣ドアランジーナ! 黄雷二冊! 電気と願いの力から生まれる、新たな力が解き放たれた!, Thunder Beast! Raiju Do Alangina! Ikazuchi: Volume 2! Coming forth from the power of electricity and wishes, a new power has been unlocked!)
When the light faded, everyone looked on in shock and disbelief at what they were seeing.
Now sporting brand new armor on the right side of the body alongside the armor on the left side, Kamen Rider Espada has been reborn!
Shion looked down at the armor now covering her body. She could feel the power flowing through her. I... I actually did it... She thought. I transformed... This is incredible.
"How?" Kento whispered, breaking the stillness that had occurred while everyone was frozen at what Shion had become.
At this point, Reika had left with Rintaro in tow, disappearing into smoke.
"Am I not worthy anymore?" Kento asked.
Shion was confused by what he meant until she felt Ikazuchi vibrate in her hand. Kento wasn't talking to her, but Ikazuchi wouldn't answer him. Not anymore.
Go on the offensive. She thought as her body moved with an instinct she'd never had. She lunged forward, swinging the sword in quick, small arcs.
Kento was caught off guard, but he had no issue blocking the assault. She kept swinging. Nothing landed, but he was being knocked back a little with every strike.
When his back hit the wall, his shoulders tensed. He swung back, weaving right through Shion's defenses to land a hit on her right shoulder. She nearly dropped the sword as he shoved her back.
"Letting Ikazuchi guide you will only get you so far." He said, putting his blade to her throat.
She froze as the blade scraped the armor at her neck. It wouldn't cut, but she could feel the dark energy radiating from the weapon. She didn't want to know the consequences of being hit.
Kento looked around at the battlefield. Everyone was staring up at the two of them in stunned shock.
He lowered Kurayami, hand coming to his head. He winced as his transformation faded. He looked up at Shion as his eyes flashed purple and his brow creased. "This path leads to death." He muttered. "I can't be responsible for more death."
She took a step towards him, extending a hand. He flinched away. Darkness swirled behind him, and he stepped back into the portal.
Shion tried to grab him, but her hand only found air.
She stared at the spot where he'd been for a moment before reaching down to pull the books free from the belt. Her transformation faded and she looked at Kaede exhausted.
She smiled as she held her for support. "You did it, Shion-chan."
Shion returned the smile. "Yeah, I did it."

Trivia - Kaede and Ayaka Shinaki
@tokuteasings inspired me to write this while also revealing more about my characters (Something which was intended). Who better to start with the two holders of the Lobera alias, the Shinaki sisters?
Warnings: Spoilers for Saber and some sad stuff in-between honestly.
Tumblr media
Kaede Shinaki (Played by FRUITS ZIPPER’s Yui Sakurai)
Both her and Ayaka’s surname is read with the kanji meaning ‘Heart of Autumn’ (心秋) with the kanji for ‘heart’ (心) read as ‘shin’, befitting the naming theme of Sword of Logos members.
She’s an aspiring singer who took a waitress job at Magi Manga Cafe (マギマンガ喫茶, Magi Mangakissa) to save up to pursue her dream while making a living for herself as a college student. This is inspired by her actress Yui Sakurai, who is a highly experienced idol.
She was inspired to pursue a singing career when she met her favorite artist (Played by Airi Suzuki, who Yui admires) who served as a comfort source after her sister's death who gave her inspiring words that led her to that path.
A unicorn plushie (One of her favorite mythological creatures alongside the fairy) she owns was given to her as a child by Ayaka before her sacrifice. Kaede still keeps it to sleep with in the present day.
Aside from Shion, Tetsuo, and Sophia, the other SoL members didn’t know it was her in Lobera’s mantle as she was often in suit when she gets involved in battle. She reveals her identity in the betrayal arc when Touma and Yuri are getting their asses handed to them by both Yumeko and the lied to SoL Riders and so seeing no choice but to step in, Kaede joins in to help them escape.
She loves sweets. Cupcakes in particular are her favorite sweet treat, especially with strawberry frosting, sprinkles, and a cherry on top.
Cinderella is her favorite non-WRB fairytale with Little Red Riding Hood being her second favorite. While she wouldn’t call Snow White her favorite, she’s more neutral on it.
When it comes to her powers, she can use wind and water magic alongside ice. Sound is a less used one that Tetsuo taught her and Ayaka to expand their understanding of elemental magic, which the two both make use of along with the environment in battle. She can also siphon wind and water magic from other users to make into her own.
Can make different crystalline items and creatures which are ofc made of ice, but appear crystal-like. For civilian usage, she can create an unsharpened ice pencil to fiddle and do spin tricks with when bored. In combat, she can materialize entities that can be used to attack, like a giant polar bear or weapons like another sword for duel wielding should the situation call for her to try and mimic Ren's technique.
She owns a copy of Ayaka’s Sword of Logos outfit which Tetsuo had made. She starts wearing it when she goes into her one-on-one duel with him in the betrayal arc as if non-verbally saying to Tetsuo "Ayaka would've never wanted this, I'll bring you to your senses."
She doesn’t like seeing her friends suffer and is willing to help them even if they think all is lost. This along with her kindness and supportive nature has made her the heart of the team while she and Shion both value family, friends, and love above all else.
Ayaka Shinaki (Played by Tao Tsuchiya)
She joined the Sword of Logos shortly before Ryo did.
Kind and supportive are what best describe her personality.
She deeply values her family, something which the other Northern Base swordsmen respect her for.
Initially, the surviving Sword of Logos members didn’t want to tell Kaede and her parents what happened to Ayaka after her death, but Tetsuo, who Ayaka holds a deep bond with, told them any way with Sophia tagging along as Kaede views her as a second mother.
Was in her mid to late 20s at the time of her sacrifice.

Kaede always looked up to her older sister Ayaka, who was a member of the Sword of Logos’ Northern Base as the previous Swordswoman of Ice. As such, after Ayaka was killed in battle, Tetsuo had a copy of her swordswoman outfit made to give to Kaede as a memento of her deceased sister. Now Kaede wears the outfit of her sister to honor her and carry her legacy as Kamen Rider Lobera.
