5. Do you have any writing superstitions? What are they and why are they 100% true?

I've been trying to think if I do have any superstitions surrounding writing, but I'm not sure I can separate them from superstitions that I have because of OCD - which I cannot say are true! They're difficult to pinpoint, because when I feel superstitious it's usually just a "doing this feels bad and feels like it would have bad consequences" no matter how innocuous. they feel completely random, too.

26. How do you get into your character’s head? How do you get out? Do you ever regret going in there in the first place?

I hadn't really thought about it before, but each character is different, has different experiences that lead them to acting the way that they do. I try to have some key ideas about them and how they think and why they think that way before I start writing them. I think it's not all dissimilar to acting: take on someone else's mindset and experiences, and then extrapolate how you would think or feel or act based on that evidence.

Getting out of that headspace is like waking up. Sometimes I feel like I don't do it fully. I do a lot of writing at night, so to be honest I probably just wind up sleeping it off. Or break character by finding something else to focus on, or getting startled out of it. Sometimes writing for me feels like being in a trance, because I'll be so focused on it that I'll just tune out everything around me. Can be both a blessing and a curse.

It's usually more the topic than the character that makes me regret what I'm doing. Characters act specific ways in their given situations and I can't stop or help that. The times I usually wind up feeling like 'This Was A Bad Idea' has been when I'm writing about something like a character's mental illness because that tends to be more personal and sometimes. Sometimes that does not turn out well!

35. What’s your favorite writing rule to smash into smithereens?

General ideas about how you should or shouldn't begin and end sentences, how long or short sentences should be. Things we learn when we first begin to write, basically. I tend to write the way I think, and sometimes that means run-on sentences or sentences that start in the beginning of thoughts or sentences that interrupt themselves.

Also, "just say 'said'" - like, sometimes that works, absolutely, but it does get boring after a while, and not everyone speaks in the same tone all the time, so that rule is a little dumb to me.
