"High hopes, it takes me back to when we started.."

Kodaline : Humbleness and Authenticity
For this week’s post, I decided to talk about one of my favorite « rock » band : Kodaline because I went to their concert last Wednesday at La Laiterie in Strasbourg. I think most of you know them because of their latest album « One Day at a Time » (2020) but I believe some of you don’t, as they are not (that) internationally famous YET. Therefore I will briefly introduce them to you and then I’ll talk about two important subjects in today’s popular music : humbleness and authenticity.
Tumblr media
Kodaline is originally an Irish « rock band » that was called 21 Demands until 2012, when they decided to change their name because of the new style of music they produced. The group is composed of 4 members, whom all play an instrument, be it the piano, the guitar, the bass or drums. There is one lead singer, Steve Garrigan, but the 3 other men also do backing vocals. They launched 4 albums since they’ve started doing music, and many of their songs are very famous, such as « All I want », « High Hopes » or « Brother ».
All I Want : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtf7hC17IBM
High Hopes : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4povfmX144
Brother : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6TXPNybrmk
I discovered them 2 years ago when I was watching the TV series « Reign », and since then I have become very found of their songs, that’s why I went to the concert last week…
Humbleness and Authenticity :
As I stipulated it just before, Kodaline is not internationally very famous yet and yet, the concert went to, was truly the best one I ever went to.
Indeed, I’ve never felt such a connection between a singer/ group and the crowd during a concert. We all could see that they were truly happy to be here, performing in front of us. It was not just one of their show, it felt like it was THE show.
I think that they are still in the state where they need to conquer the audience’s heart and therefore they are really attached to be close to their audience. They tried to create a real complicity with us by making jokes, talking to the British and Irish people in the crowd. During the concert, they made us believe it was over but came back, made us do an accapella song with them and then went up on stage again and played 3 more songs as we asked them to.
I feel like there is less and less connection between artist and audience. Now, when I go to concert, I feel like the artist is just performing the same show as all the other nights, saying the same things to create a « pseudo » relation with the crowd, while during Kodaline’s concert I felt like they were being honest and true with us.
Moreover, they really tried to create a peaceful environment and one that ressemble them. Indeed, they brought all their instruments on stage and there was no background soundtrack : they played all the instruments live. They even decorated the room with lightbubles and umbrellas (their symbol).
Tumblr media
To put it in a nutshell, I just wanted to present you this very amazing group that I love (go listen to some of their songs if you haven’t yet !!!). I also wanted to highlight that I was really happy about my concert experience, as it was the first time that I felt such a connection with singers during a show : it felt like they were sinning their songs to / with some friends.

Iconic Channel 4 theme tunes remixed in celebration of The Piano
A selection of Channel 4’s most iconic theme tunes might sound a little different in the next few days. The title music of shows such as Gogglebox and Countdown has been rearranged and performed on piano in celebration of the new second series of The Piano, which begins on Channel 4 on Sunday 28 April at 9pm. Kodaline frontman Steve Garrigan has rearranged hit song ‘Perfect World’ which serves…

The Eyebrows
Recently I was able to catch up with Charlotte, North Carolina-based power pop band, The Eyebrows, to discuss their latest album called Double Take. The Eyebrows are singer-songwriter, producer, guitarist, and multi-instrumentalist Jay Garrigan, bassist and vocalist Darrin Gray, and drummer and multi-instrumentalist Shawn Lynch. In this interview, I asked the band about what went into the writing/recording process for Double Take, how they approach building out their setlists for tours, and much more. Double Take released on April 19th, and there are still a few physical options of the record at the band’s store here. Where did the album title of Double Take come from? What’s the significance of the title as it relates to these songs? On one hand, I feel that my life is the definition of a double take, which is a surprised, second look at a person or situation whose significance had not been completely grasped at first. I’ve often asked myself why this is. The title Double Take also describes the dual nature of our latest album, a direct result of an innovative approach to recording that Mitch Easter inspired. This album features each song in two distinct versions: one polished and produced by Mitch in the studio, capturing the rocktastic essence of our sound only in the way someone as talented and artistic as Mitch can, and another raw, vibrant version that I recorded & mixed myself in our practice space, echoing the mid-fi and lo-fi aesthetics of bands like early REM, GBV, and Suicide that I deeply admire. This approach not only showcases our versatility as an imaginative studio and visceral, live band, but also challenges listeners to reconsider our music through different sonic perspectives & palettes, highlighting how varied production styles can alter the perception of the same song. How did the process of recording this LP with Mitch Easter go? Any vivid memories from the studio sessions? As far as memories go, we were absolutely buzzing as The Baseball Project just finished tracking and mixing their latest album with Mitch right before we started to track our album. To be literally standing right where our heroes Peter Buck, Mike Mills, Scott McCaughey, Steve Wynn and Linda Pitmon were was awe-inspiring, and we hoped to catch a ride on a glimmer of their musical mojo. REM was very formative upon younger versions of myself and drummist Shawn Lynch. In the early 90s, Mike Mills once said he wanted to put his two cents into anything I do, and I stupidly lost his phone number. Maybe he will do a double take at some future time, haha. Also in this session, we got to use some really interesting gear, such as running a mix buss through a 60s EMI console – much like a console The Beatles would have used during the 60s. I believe Kurt Vile bought this console from Mitch recently. I know for a fact we were the last band to record on Mitch’s legendary main console before he let it go—a console that was used to mix the soundtrack of The NeverEnding Story. Reflecting on Double Take, where each song undergoes its own transformation across two sides, it feels apt to echo a line from the movie: ‘Nothing is lost…Everything is transformed.’ (shivers!) Recording with Mitch Easter at his studio is always a great time, and having detailed musical conversations comes naturally within the walls of the Fidelitorium. We can talk about things like… what kind of mic, amp, and reverb is needed to give this Hohner Pianet a period-specific, 60s sound? I love the energy of your band’s performance on the music video for “Say Yeah!”. Where was this video shot at, and how pleased are you with the final product? “Say Yeah!” was shot in the raw veins of our beloved Charlotte, NC in my backyard, a place as battered and beautiful as the tune itself. We filmed it right next to a very toxic, chemical-laden creek right across from – what I can only call – the apartment-ization and gentrification of my neighborhood and city. When we first moved here, we were surrounded by woods in… https://chorus.fm/features/interviews/the-eyebrows/

MATOMA PAIRS UP WITH JP COOPER TO RELEASE “MIDNIGHT SUN”
Tumblr media
Inspirational Norwegian DJ and record producer Matoma, known for songs like “All Night” with The Vamps and “I Don’t Dance” with Enrique Iglesias, has released his newest single “Midnight Sun” with JP Cooper, available now on all streaming platforms HERE. Working together for the first time in their music careers, the incredibly talented artists have seamlessly blended their two unique styles to create one of the top hits for the Summer.
Listen to the new single here:
https://open.spotify.com/album/15PdggN6xD2mtIE9odL5y2
Staying true to its title, “Midnight Sun” is a light-hearted track that lights up the restful night with its cheerful lyrics and rhythmic beats. The song begins with angelic vocals of JP expressing his love and appreciation for people who chase away the shadows of the night with their goodness and light. After the first electrifying beat drop, the tune becomes impossible to forget with catchy, groovy, and rhythmic instrumentals. In its own right, this song is its own midnight sun.
“I feel like I’ve known Tom for years, although we’ve only met once and “midnight sun” was written over a zoom session. ‘Midnight Sun’ is a celebration of the people who bring light in your darkest moments. I suggested the idea of Midnight Sun as a nod to the very light nights in Norway during the Summer….turns out Tom’s first ever tour was called the Midnight Sun tour so I guess it was meant to be. I have a feeling this is a creative relationship that will last much longer than just the one song.” - JP Cooper
Although “Midnight Sun” marks the first ever collaboration between Matoma and JP Cooper, both artists are no strangers to breathtaking collaborations. Matoma’s previous singles “Take Me to the Sunshine” featuring Super-Hi and Bullysongs, “Never Surrender”featuring Steve Garrigan of Kodaline, “Summer Feeling” featuring Jonah Kagen, scored record numbers of streams in their first week. The all-around artist has demonstrated his raw talent across various genres, proving time after time that he is a driving force in the current electronic world. “Midnight Sun” follows Matoma & A R I Z O N A’s single “Heart So Big.”
Debuting with the album ‘Raised Under Grey Skies’ in 2017, JP Cooper skyrocketed to fame with his single, “September Song,” which peaked at number 7 on the UK Singles Chart. After a long 5 years hiatus, the Englishman came back into the music industry with his second album, ‘She’ in February 2022. As a rising neo-soul singer-songwriter from Middleton, JP Cooper has showcased his versatility through his myriad collaborations with various artists, including Jonas Blue–where his featured “Perfect Stranger” has surpassed 848 million streams on Spotify and is certified platinum in the UK. This time, JP’s collaboration with Matoma will without a doubt be another success that will take his career to another level.

it's just a really strange feeling when you write a song and it's about something really personal or it's about an experience. then you get on stage and you play the song and there's... however many people singing back and they relate to the song in their own way. its amazing. that's all i can say, it's the greatest feeling ever

MATOMA AND A R I Z O N A SPREAD LOVE WITH OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO FOR “HEART SO BIG”
Tumblr media
Inspirational Norwegian DJ and producer Matoma, best known for singles “All Night” with The Vamps and “I Don’t Dance” withEnrique Iglesias, has released the emotional official music video for the heartwarming single “Heart So Big,” with electronic dance-pop trio A R I Z O N A, which can be found HERE. The track was written with A R I Z O N A’s longtime collaborator PJ Bianco as a love letter to his son with autism.
Watch the video here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjLwSpSQTxk
The pair have released an emotional music video showing a compilation of what love represents all around the world. Crowdsourced from over 2,000 fan submissions, the raw footage reflects pure happiness, excitement, and a very much needed reminder of all the positivity that exists in our seemingly ordinary daily lives. While the music video shows a diverse group of people from all over the world, it highlights the notion that love is a universal language. Together with simple yet impactful lyrics like “you gotta smile so bright, so bright,” this highly contagious and powerful video is a testimony to the power of love.
Matoma shares, “I couldn't imagine a better music video for this special song than this! It truly brought me to tears to feel all the love in these incredible videos, like little glimpses into the hearts and memories of people all over the world. Like the song, it's a reminder to treasure the good that we have in our lives, and that we are all connected by that common joy.”
A R I Z O N A shares, “This song, along with the hopes of raising autism awareness, carries a special notion in general that we should remember to cherish and protect the ones we love in our lives. Sometimes we can be all they have, or vice versa.”
The positivity in the song comes as no surprise to Matoma fans, as he is recognized globally for his charity work behind the music. He recently headlined Gravity Festival, in partnership with EDM juggernaut Proximity, and used his performance to raise money for Red Cross’ Ukraine Crisis Appeal. His livestream raised $10,000 USD in just 45 minutes, breaking past records for the festival; and he decided to match the donations personally.
Following that heartfelt livestream, he purchased three billboards on the i-10 highway to Coachella; originally intended for promoting his new music, but with the tragic war continuing in Ukraine, he decided to put them towards raising funds and awareness for Ukraine humanitarian aid organization Music Saves UA. A video of the billboards via a drone flyover can be found HERE. Matoma’s billboards received worldwide news coverage from outlets across the globe including NME, The FADER, The Independent, MSN, Yahoo News, and Metro UK.
“Heart So Big” follows previous singles “Take Me to the Sunshine” featuring Super-Hi and Bullysongs, “Never Surrender” featuring Steve Garrigan ofKodaline, and “Summer Feeling” featuring Jonah Kagen, which scored record numbers of streams in their first week. “Never Surrender” has since taken off with Matoma and Steve performing the moving track on The Tonight Show (Indonesia) and God Morgen Norge (Norway).
