No cos the karaoke family therapy scene fucked me up sm when I saw it. I felt so sad because I knew it was like, the first and maybe last time Logan would actually come to them and be genuine for once. He wasn't the one in power in that scene and he had to listen to his kids and actually apologise. I believe in that moment they actually could have gotten through so much and finally spoken to their dad about shit they always wanted to. But the thing is, his kids had so much anger pent up from their whole life, that that was the only thing came out. It was their one chance to sort things out. It was the one time their father came to them because he missed them (idc what people wanna say and make out that he's a psychopath, he wasn't, he loved his kids but the love was all wrong. The first episodes of this season established how strongly he felt their absence). And they'll never have that again. They'll never have closure. They'll never get to work things out. That night was their last night and the last way that all of them (except Roman) will hold as their final memory of their dad. And now he's gone. And they will NEVER be able to have that talk again and get any sort of closure. They're fucked.

“I wasn't crying about mothers," he said rather indignantly. "I was crying because I can't get my shadow to stick on. Besides, I wasn't crying.” J-M Barrie, Peter Pan
Help! Roman seems to be irremediably stuck in the denial stage.
Tumblr media
He denies Logan's death and his subsequent grief, rewrites the fact that he’s partly to blame for Logan souring on Gerri and in fact wasn’t he helping the old gal actually, he can’t face up to the unsavoury dealings that the realities of being in charge entail etc.
Tumblr media
He’s also completely unable not to see his own plight in others; Rushing over to Kerri, {the jilted shadow chosen one who displays her uncontrollable pain because Logan promised her the world and taking her side against the older arguably wronged woman who’s exacting her revenge} is the thing getting his most pained whines of this episode. His most selfless act is also his most self-centred one... "Oh this I can understand, I too was dad’s to fuck. He also promised me things he didn’t make good on and when I lost him, I didn’t even get the comfort I deserved from the person I’ve wronged”.
Tumblr media
This season is hailing honesty as the single redeeming feature for enduring relationships within that universe.
Connor and Willa of all pairings have gotten there.
The sibs manage an imperfect version of it.
Shiv and Tom keep trying to say something real to each other.
Roman and Gerri? No, she doesn’t care about getting fired, it’s fine. He didn’t hurt her at all. They, who have always used the shadows of business talk to live their romance, are utterly failing at honesty and openness.
Unless Roman starts facing up to reality in general, this will end tragically for him. Do pills and transferring caring skills to random Logan-approved people help keep a genuinely loving personality at bay?
Tumblr media
It’s all incredibly ominous by the way the mounting tension of the dangers facing Roman. The guard dog arriving, the nazi watch, the blowup at Shiv about Mencken, conveniently ignoring his role in Gerri’s fragility (of course nazism and masculinity are the only things that allow him to ignore what he’s done). There are also outspoke references to paedophilia in the obit and the Gauguin paintings. Roman is fine, he’s smiling, he’s moving on, he’s 'pre-grieved'. And frankly, who notices the cracks? Ken maybe…
Yeah there’s no way this doesn’t end taunting a progressive crowd, T-posing for his sins.
Tumblr media
Gerri will be fine reassuringly. Roman is proving with every minute that passes that not allowing herself to be wooed by him had been the right call all along. She’s proving how the tiniest sliver of impropriety could have been her death - including at Roman’s hands. And she’s acting every bit as smug as she should.
But of course now she loses CEO and he gets the leverage of knowing Logan was going to fire her. They both have prejudicial information about each other they’re not currently using...
So was a sham marriage better than a romance that wouldn’t say its name? In succession? Welcome to our era of fearing the answer…

season 4 has built so well on the way succession is not just haunted by the ghosts of those we know in the present, but those they lost in the past. like, the recent emphasis on connor’s mom. Rose being mentioned in logan’s will. evil uncle noah. greg’s gay dad. lester mclintock. we don’t ever get to see the river, just the scars it left behind. we don’t see the bodies in the graveyards, just the victims and the mourners in their wake. we hear biased, half-joking whispers of what’s happened and we’re forced to draw our own conclusions of what the truth is from that. the audience doesn’t need to meet them. all the proof of who they were can be read in between the lines right in front of us— lines that might be an underline and might be a crossing-out.

The erosion of motherhood in succession 2night……Kendall saying his father created them with no acknowledgment to Caroline. His wanting to get full custody and take the kids from Rava. Shiv drinking while pregnant even after telling her family.

I mean i get it. Shiv is the least qualified for that position. Although honestly all three are terrible choices. It should have been gerri. But still they fucked her. They wanted to go in business together. They talked her out of another job. And now she‘s fucked.

Do you think Logan died in the airplane bathroom in a sick dog kind of way? Like, he crawled away to die alone to avoid being perceived as vulnerable by the opportunistic predators around him. He didn't want his body picked apart by the scavengers he's decided to surround himself with.
And all while he was dying, his children were together. The litter united.

Lol at the collective Mencken Freakout. I mean I’m not totally immune mostly cause it’s gonna twist my stomach, but Logan literally told Roman “oh it’s so cute you think you can have Gerri” (And Roman’s tragedy that the only one who sees right through him in that regard thinks that humans are market units lol.)
“No way buddy. Here’s who you are (who I need you to be), a ruthless fuck (lol), a dragon, you can have Matsson and Mencken and fascism and all that if you want IDGAF, as long as it’s good business.”
Roman’s like well hang on cause that really sucks and it feels wrong in my tummy that you’re bailing on Con and making me kill the woman I want and that you’re making me watch her blink back tears (and that you took mum away) etc. And Logan proceeds to keel over as punishment for Roman trying to stand up for himself. For Roman, always a choice between his original tormentor and the people he feels things for. And this is the final battle, heightened stakes and all.  As his dad dies, the only person he asks comfort from is Gerri, she’s the only one in his room, shoes off and all. They’re not gonna retcon that and have him fall for a nazi lol.
Is he gonna strike her down in anger and act as if it never meant anything to him “too much birthday” style, yes probably and we’ll get to see how it destroys him every step of the way.
It is kinda funny how he’ll desperately go through alternative love interests (Tabs, Lukas and Jeryd) and experience them for the fail!pairings that they are.
Oh and to top it all of, his choosing Mencken might also gonna involve betraying Connor or getting him to give up his biggest dream lol.
This is as trope, star crossed lovers, soap opera-ish as succession gets. RG have always been background Roman and Juliet and this season is gonna be no different, angst-edition.
And we’ll be glad if Roman manages to choose to be Gerri’s friend to start with in the end, we’ll breathe a collective sigh of relief that he didn’t have to die for trying to be whom he could never be.

When you run away from your 80-sth birthday party because you're sad your kids are not there, and the one son that is there doesn't even get up or approach you when he says "happy birthday", and then you sincerely say "you're my best pal" to your bodyguard, I don't think you're a winner you think you are.
