As my introduction, I'm writing my favorite musumeyaku in Hoshigimi below
Arias Hitomi
I love her the most in the musumeyaku 😭
It was Don Juan when I see her for the first time (DVD). She played Elvira, the wife of Don Juan. How beautiful she is, how beautiful she sings, how realistic she plays, everything surprised me!!
Actually I was yukigumi fan then, however in a few months I became hoshigimi fan😚 and I found her in hoshigimi! I felt it was like destiny!
My favorite roles of Miho chan are Lara in Doktor Zhivago, Emperor kougyoku in Kamatari, and Tamahime in Tatsunomiya-monogatari.
Aaaaand now she plays a nanny in Romeo and Juliet. This role is completely "new" for Miho chan😭 I'm glad that she herself enjoys this role. She always makes us cry with her solo song. I can't wait to see Manon next!!
Hanayuki Rira
I believe all people will like her at a glance...I can't believe such beautiful woman exists in this world...🤔 Rira chan is not so tall, and its height makes her cute, too. But!!!!! Once she starts dancing, she looks quite cool and passionate!! Though she rarely plays main roles in performances, she shows her presence by her cute looks and energic dance. My favorite is finale in Ray. She dances with Hiroka Yu. It was a pretty couple with small but powerful Rira chan and tall and smiley Hiroka san 🥰 Now she plays one of Montague girls, and will be a member of Manon 😍
Kozakura Honoka
She is a great actress and singer who is the proud of Hoshigimi!!! Please watch Aloysia in rock opera morzalt, Tonya in Doktor Zhivago, Anabel in a man from Algiers, and Roxane in Cyrano de Bergerac. Also she sings as a etoile in Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet will be happy by her beautiful voice😭
She seems perfect, but out of the stage, she sometimes a little bit weird and really unique person. I guess she is very smart. I love her sense of what she speaks having a tinge of humor. Her intelligence and sense of humor always amused me!! In conclusion, I love her gap between her off stages personality and perfect play on stage !!
Sakuraba Mai
First I'm still shocked by her retirement 🥺I cannot believe that she will be no longer in Takarazuka in a few days..... I understand that she herself chose this way but I want her to stay and show great performances more...Who expected that she would retire just after playing the heroine at a fresh members play and singing as a etoile??
I feel there's something about her thats just plain sexy, and therefore Natalya in the debutants was suited her. On the other hand she surprised us by Juliet in El Halcon!! I can't believe that she is really mame chan and never forget her song My mind becomes pink......😍lol
Sumika Amane
Though she is young(102th) and rarely plays big role......she is known for those in the know!! In a show she dances powerfully and shows spirited face like a imp! Her facial expressions changes often which attracts me always 😍 she is a professional rocket girl in the line dance!! On the other hand her play in a drama is also great!! She herself says she loves playing. She gives unique personality to her roles even they are many other minor characters. I really like Canon's fan in God of Stars. Bolshevist in Doktor Zhivago gave me a strong impression even she didn't have any lines... with her look full of hatred. She will be a member of Basara no Yadhago(the descendant of Basara), the last stage of Todoroki Yu. This is her third time that she act together with Todoroki san. She will certainly take a lot in herself from Todoroki san!!

April 2021, Kageki, Ayaki Hikari’s “e to bun” translation - or - the one with all the Montague Information
Okay, alright I am back with another funky little casual and ~* fun *~ translation. Since Ayaki Hikari has an e to bun column right now I, of course, am under legal obligation to read it. Which means that I might as well go ahead and translate it for folks too. And boy, this one is important. If you’re at all interested in the very... very minor details of the background of Hoshigumi’s current production of Romeo and Juliet then I am happy to provide this content to you for the next three months. This month Akachan covered the entirety of the Montagues. By the sounds of it she will hopefully be covering the Capulets next month so look out for that or whatever else it could be when I translate that next month. For now, I leave you with this monstrosity of content, please do enjoy. And know that, yes, I tried my damnedest to make a chart of these relationships and it was just too messy I could not make it work so, good luck.

The Situation in Verona, As I Reveal It - Ayaki Hikari (title credited to: Iroha Reo) Hello to all the readers of Kageki. My name is Ayaki and I am Benvolio in the B Cast of “Romeo and Juliet.” I would like to take this opportunity to introduce the profiles of all my Montague friends in the same style as “Takarazuka Otome.”  Each person answered the following questions: (1) Role (2) Family structure (3) Is there someone you are in love with? That you are friends with? (4) Points of interest that we hope you, the audience, will find helpful or enjoy when watching the play. Shizuki Otone: (1) Mia (2) Kozakura Honoka’s older sister 😊 (3) Benvolio, of course haha ❤️❤️❤️ (4) In “Kirei wa Kitanai” I get to see Benvolio, so I am hoping to show him there that I like him!! Sazanami Reira: (1) Luka (2) I have 3 younger sisters. (Otosaki Itsuki, her twin Ruri Hanaka, and Hoshisaki Nozomi) (3) I don’t build closer friendships with my peers in town, but instead with all the girls. (4) I try to see all the faces of the Montagues in every number. Otosaki Itsuki: (1) Lucia (2) A brother, Sazanami Reira-san. Sisters, Ruri Hanaka and Hoshisaki Nozomi. (3) I don’t have a girlfriend. I’m a person who listens to everyone’s problems and helps them with their love life. My best friend is Otosaki! (4) My hairstyle! I have a cross in the back of it, so try to find it! Yuunagi Ryou: (1) Bruno (2) I have a younger brother (Hayato Reo)! Ayane Miran is my younger sister, and I am childhood friends with Hanayuki Rira. (3) I have no girlfriends, but I do have a crush on Otosaki Itsuki-san. (4) After being slapped by Otosaki-san in “Kirei wa Kitanai” I had to learn how to do a successful backwards roll. Minato Rihi: (1) Pos Savin (2) No family (Orphan) (3) Romeo (4) The hairstyle is based on a manga character. Best friends with Otosaki-san, childhood friends with Yuunagi Ryou. (3) I have a crush on Romeo...❤️ (4) This is not the usual Hanayuki, I have a fighting, powerful, look behind my eyes! Kozakura Honoka: (1) Carla (2) I’m Shizuki Otone-san’s sister! (3) I like Mercutio. I don’t know if as a friend or… as a more than that? (4) I look like I have short hair, but it’s actually straight, long hair! It’s a wolf-cut hairstyle! Hayato Reo: (1) Nicolo (2) I am the younger brother of Yuunagi Ryou! (3) I don’t have a love… (4) I am very strong! Kirari An (A Cast): (1) Julia (2) Asakura Shizuku’s sister. (4) My earrings were given to me by Lady Montague! Asakura Shizuku (A Cast): (1) Sophia (2) Kirari An’s sister. (3) I have a crush on Mercutio. (3) I like Ouka Rurina without realizing it and mistakenly think she likes me back. (4) Sometimes it can feel like me and Soua Takeru really are twins. Kuresaki Rino: (B Cast): (1) Sophie (2) I am an only child and a childhood friend of Yuran Sui. (3) There are some people I like, but I don’t really feel a connection with them. So I am looking for someone. (4) I don’t want to fight my troupemate Sumika Amane, in the duel, but I have to fight with her. I’m hoping to express this conflict to her through my heart so that we can reconcile in the end through our performance! Soua Takeru (B Cast): (1) Adam (2) I am Amaton Kanon’s twin brother. (3) I temporarily fell in love with Hoshisaki Nozomi but I am easily distracted. (4) Sometimes I feel like me and Amato Kanon are really twins. (4) I have had natural perm-style hair from birth! I am a hot-blooded man with a short temper, but I also have a passionate heart and love my friends. Ruri Hanaka (A Cast): (1) Kiara (meaning “bright”) (2) My brother Sazanami Reira, my first sister Otosaki Itsuki, and my other sister Hoshisaki Nozomi. Yuran Sui (B Cast): (1) Laura (2) I am an only child. But my childhood friend is Kuresaki Rino. (3) I have always had a crush on Mercutio. (4) In the duel, I want to express that I know it is a meaningless fight. But I pretend not to notice this feeling and become driven by hatred and a need for power. May 2021, Kageki, Ayaki Hikari’s “e to bun” translation - or - the one with all the Capulet Information
Okay here it is the Capulet version of Akachan’s e to bun column. Again blah, blah, this is a fun and casual translation (I also did this one like... particularly quickly and on 0 braincells this week so apologies for any typos that hopefully aren’t there!) also please don’t share it taking it as your own translation etc etc. Anyway please enjoy this new information on the Capulets! I’ll be sure to post the third and final edition next month whenever it is available to me. Also, later this month, I will be posting a translation of Hoshigumi’s Romeo and Juliet (2021) backstage talk from this same issue of Kageki!

The Situation in Verona, As I Reveal It - Ayaki Hikari
(title credited to: Iroha Reo)
Hello to all the readers of Kageki. It’s Ayaki, playing the role of Count Paris in “Romeo and Juliet” for the A Cast. This month, I would like to introduce everyone in the Capulet family and ask them the following questions:
(1) Name, (2) Family structure, (3) Is there someone they love? (4) Their favorite point.
I hope you enjoy comparing these answers with last month’s issue.
Otoha Minori: (1) Rebecca (and I like the meaning of the name) (2) Soubu Sakiho is my cousin. But he is like a little brother. (3) I love the whole Capulet family. But I really love Tybalt. (4) I live my life as Rebecca of the Capulets and am very particular about everything in my work. I have a different hairstyle for both A and B schedules so I hope you can see them!
Ooki Makoto: (1) Tigre (2) My sister, from another father, is Murasaki Rira (3) I love my sister the most (4) I’m sure you’ll be able to understand my absolute love and loyalty to my family. It’s not Tybalt’s fault, it’s all Romeo’s fault.
Hiroka Yuu: (1) Leonardo (2) From A Cast, Nijou Hana is my younger sister. From B Cast Mizuno Yuri is my sister. (3) My future love?! Montague Otosaki Itsuki (4) Leonardo means “daring lion” in Italian, so I made my hair blonde and stand up! I hope you can see the sadness I am feeling when I fight with Otosaki in front of the stage.
Murasaki Rira: (1) Sirena (from Sirens in Greek mythology) and I’m 19 years old (2) Half-brother is Ooki Makoto (3) Her brother is her love (4) The Sirens seduce people with their singing voices and lead them to their doom, but I want to do that with my dancing. I want to look different in front of Tybalt and the other Capulets during numbers like during the duel. I believe that a Capulet girl should be more feminine than a Montague girl. So I am conscious of my feminine power on a daily basis.
Toudou Jun: (1) Theo (meaning God’s gift) (3) I have a crush on Miono Saki (4) I am very particular about my hairstyle!
Iroha Reo: (1) Squalo (3) I have a crush on Otoha Minori… (4) My name means “shark,” so I will try to stay sharp every day! Miono Saki: (1) Marta (2) I am an orphan and a childhood friend of Ouri Mao (3) Tybalt (4) I have cut off a lot of my hair for this.
Amaki Homare: (1) Basiglio (nickname Rose) (2) I am the twin of Soubu Sakiho (3) Ouri Mao and I are together and are being targeted by the Montague Minato Rihi (4) Look at my Super Saiyan-like haircut and my high speed turns!
Soubu Sakiho: (1) Mario (2) Otoha Minori is my cousin (3) I like all the girls. My favorite is Murasaki Rira. I’m not aware of my cousin’s love for anyone. (4) You should look for my lift of Hanayuki Rira!
Nanase Miki: (1) Bianca (2) Ouri Mao and I are sisters but I’m older (3) I am always running after Iroha Reo! But, of course, I love all the Capulets! (4) The moment Tybalt is stabbed, I’m trying to make the best scream to keep it realistic.
Ouri Mao: (1) Kiki (2) I am childhood friends with Miono Saki and Nanase Miki is my sister. (3) Amaki Homare (4) What I am interested in is interactions with otokoyaku! I am hoping to produce different results in both A and B patterns.
Akashi Reima (B Cast): (1) Roy (2) Yuuhi Maki is my younger brother, but we aren’t very close. (3) I like Ayazono Hina but she’s too fickle for me. (4) I’m not quick to fight, but I’m overbearing. And I take my hatred out on the Montagues.
Sakuraba Mai (A Cast): (1) Violet (2) I’m a loner with a free spirit (3) I’ll leave that to your imagination (4) I have long black hair and am trying to make my make-up shine.
Nijou Hana (A Cast): (1) Amanda (2) Hiroka Yuu is my brother (3) Sayaka Rin (4) I made my own hair mesh for the first time.
Sayaka Rin (A Cast): (1) Angelo (2) My cousin is Sakishiro Kei, like a younger brother. I am a close blood relative to Tybalt. 10 under 10
Tumblr media
Inspired by @zukadiary‘s 12 Underclassmen I’m Into, here’s my spin on introducing you to my favorite young ones. 10 actresses under ken 10, presented in order as they are in that randomly generated graphic above.
1.) Yuunagi Ryou, Hoshigumi Technically nicknamed Shimo, she has inspired many nicknames that I am the sole user of. I’ve watched more shinkos than I’d like to admit just to catch her saying a few lines in her bizarrely husky and staticky voice. Japanese Twitter has noticed that she’s getting very ヤバイ. One of the best dancers Hoshigumi has, full stop, and probably the most entertaining person I’ve ever watched fuck around in the back of scenes. I would pay full blu ray price for a star angle on her in group scenes. (Ask Me About her Food Antics and penchant for Touching Musumeyaku.) Her classmates have described her as ”強い”. I might be in love with her. Dream role: Hot Bad Boy in a 90′s teen romcom, Anyone in RetJ, a greaser in Grease.
2.) Honoka Kozakura, Hoshigumi Please sign here! (What’s this, you ask?- it’s a petition for the Hoshigumi Producers to Treat Honoka better!) Always the bridesmaid, never the bride, except the one time she got a shinko lead. Voice of an ANGEL. Captivatingly Present onstage. Word of God says she puts in a heartbreaking amount of real-life research into characters she plays and their circumstances, and it SHOWS. She is an ACTRESS.  Dream role: Cinderella.
3.) Taiki Hayate, Hoshigumi I genuinely don’t have much to say about Taiki because she’s  a 105th and hasn’t grown into anything resembling her potential, which I am assuming she has based on the fact that she’s huge and delivered some IMPRESSIVE side-eye directed towards no one in particular in the Oceans Hatsubutai that I saw. Also, from her Takawiki profile:
Tumblr media
What’s not to love? Dream role: Bill in Me and My Girl in approximately 12 years.
4.) Irodori Michiru, Yukigumi I think it’s fair to admit that I love Michiru because she is probably the cutest human being I have ever seen in my entire life. She looks like a cat. She has the sweetest smile. I’d trust her with tasks like helping alter a dress while it was still on my body, and like being my baking partner for a neighborhood bake sale. Sweet voice, good actress, apparently was tracked against Kuracchi once upon a time but we see how that worked for both of them. I hope Yukigumi keeps her visible for as long as she wants to stick around. In my dreams, her and Machi Yuuka (or more realistically, Aasa), are the top combi of Yukigumi.  Dream role: Katherine in Newsies....
5.) Amato Kanon, Hoshigumi I could literally just write “Amato Kanon Will Be Top Star One Day” here and leave it at that. I have never in my life been so sure of anything. Kanon has made my shoulders shake with laughter (like in Elbe, as Johnny, always yelling, always skittish), and made my stomach drop in a way that a ken-3 otokoyaku should NOT be able to do. Her role in God of Stars is *chefs kiss* inspired. She’s got GAME (onstage). Multiple people have reported to me that they are unable to take their eyes off her. Cries a lot. Loved the hell out of Nanami Hiroki. Just had her first shinko lead, and I hope that was like lead number 1 of 5. Dream roles for her to play: Romeo, Ronan in 1789.
6.) Sumika Amane, Hoshigumi Sumika Amane won me over when I noticed that in the Killer Rouge rockette, she was looking towards the rafters and appeared to be earnestly PRAYING she wasn’t about to fall over. She’s played a non-speaking maid for like three shows in a row. She’s way taller than you think she is gonna be. She gets to sexy dance on the ginkyou in Éclair Brillant and it’s honestly more effective than I expected. Always in pink, the SWEETEST fashion sense, super cute ears. She may not be moving up in the troupe, but every day she moves up in my heart. Dream role: something where she speaks.
7.) Aosaki Iori, Soragumi “Aosaki Iori doesn’t even look like herself” - zukadiary, on the picture in the graphic. She’s right. It doesn’t. When the pictures of the 103rd class came out, I picked Aosaki Iori on face alone, and I don’t regret it. I can’t say anything about her stage presence because Soragumi seems hell bent on hiding her from me, though I DID spot her THREE TIMES in the background in Oceans 11. She is TINY. She’s a good dancer! She has huge eyes and a wildly honest and innocent aura about her. I have no idea what she’s gonna grow up to be like. She’s not even in the upcoming Soragumi split. In my dreams, I get to see her for longer than 30 consecutive seconds as a bellboy that Seiko literally shoves aside. If You See This Child, please call me.  Dream role: Literally just let me see her.
8.) Ruri Hanaka, Hoshigumi Another 103rd pick on face alone, but BOY THIS ONE REALLY TURNED OUT TO BE SOMETHING. Ruri Hanaka has: more game than any ken 10+ otokoyaku I have ever seen, more raw sex appeal than Makaze and Aasa (bear with me) put together. I saw two twitter users refer to her as “Rockette Killer Rurihana”. She’s RIPPED. I made eye contact with her once and had to look away because I could not TAKE the energy with which she was looking at me. She gets dance solos for a reason. She runs fast (she was a HIT after her role as Betty in the Elbe Shinko.) I could list what she’s good at for an hour and I wouldn’t even be done.  Dream role: Elle Woods in Legally Blonde
9.) Natsu Hayato, Soragumi This picture of her actually looks exactly like what Aosaki Iori looks like in real life. The main difference is Natsu Hayato is visible, (probably partially because she’s like nine feet tall.) She was in Sora’s Uptown Funk brilliant dreams. She kind of got the dance. Mostly she fucked around in the back with her oversized shirt not tucked in. Needless to say, I think she’s INSANELY cute and charming. She’s had some good shinko roles. Sweet sweet smile.  Dream role: Sailor Uranus or a barista in a coffee shop romcom.
10.) Mizuno Yuri, Hoshigumi We call her “Noodle” because I have never seen a like longer, noodlier musumeyaku. Has been partnered with Kai multiple times in the past, which shows in her dance technique (best described as “following the suggestion of the choreography”). Once she tried to talk about Kai and cried so hard someone else had to take over for her. She has a TRULY STRANGE and wobbly way of speaking. Insane dimples. Genuinely reminds me of a newborn giraffe. Seems to have a FUN sense of humor and REAL personality though- and I can’t wait to see how she grows into it, though since they keep giving her either shinko LEADS or shinko nibante musumeyaku leads, maybe we won’t have to look too hard to see her.  Dream role: Sister Mary Patrick in Sister Act.

now that’s what i call takarazuka 2018
I don’t feel like i can give a super accurate and unbiased recap of the year, but then, I don’t think that anyone who’s doing this can. So, here are my personal thoughts on the year!
My favorite musical: Thunderbolt Fantasy. Hands down. I went in thinking it would be what I had to sit through to get to Killer Rouge, and BOY was I wrong. Perfect casting all around, fun, funny as hell, BEAUTIFULLY executed, and just overall something I wish I could have seen every single day of its run. They could not have picked a better show to bring to Taiwan.
My favorite revue: Killer Rouge (but the SECOND iteration, not the summer run.) The split cast allowed for each and every one of the kids you never really get to see to SHINE (Sumika Amane! Yuunagi Ryou! Ruri Hanaka! Nice!), they got rid of the clunkier bits, added a BEAUTIFUL top star solo for Beni, Kai was in a velvet bodysuit, and the ad libs were OFF THE CHARTS. It was everything to me. I’ll definitely throw more than honorable mentions to Tsukigumi’s BADDY (which requires no introduction or explanation from me) and Soragumi’s Citrus Kaze (for just being Citrus Kaze, no bells or frills or whistles, I just love that show.)
The shows I’m Saddest I Missed are: Tsukigumi’s Singin’ in the Rain- because if any show radiates love, it’s that one. I’m sad I missed the funny and bright and smart-mouthed Another World (by six days....) and the end of otokoyaku Toa Reiya. And of course, I can NOT leave out January’s West Side Story. I saw August. I love West Side Story. But man, I wish I could have seen Sora and Kiki in ACTION.
The costume I liked most: My knee-jerk reaction is Makaze in Jeans in West Side Story and I don’t really wanna think past that one because I’d like to linger on that image a little longer.
The thing I want to Take Everyone’s Face Gently in My Hands and Force Them to Look At is: The way Hoshigumi worked as an ensemble this year. That troupe isn’t marked by the strongest individuals in the revue, but MAN do they work together in a BEAUTIFUL way even while lacking...cohesion? The adventuring party formula worked incredibly for them throughout Another World AND Thunderbolt both. Their passion/energy/excitement/pure chaotic tangible love for what they’re doing is my favorite thing in the world, hands down. I love Hoshigumi.
The thing that most surprised me this year was: 1.) How much I ABSOLUTELY LOVED YUKIGUMI’S GAISENMON. I was NOT interested in that show. I DID cry during that show. I WOULD see that show again. I was DEEPLY MOVED. I LOVED Gaisenmon. 2.) How much Kazuki Sora ROCKS at ochakai. I literally choked from laughing. If someone said ‘hey, Sora has an ochakai every day this week, wanna come?’ I’d hand them appx. 445 USD and say I’m already on my way to the venue.  3.) I wanted to see Tsukigumi’s Elisabeth like 400 times. Tamakichi’s Der Tod?? Y’ALL??? That whole show was something POWERFUL and lovely.
The biggest thing that happened in 2018: Kaidan. Like it or not, and I don’t, 2018 was the last full year we were gifted with Nanami Hiroki’s presence both on and off the Takarazuka stage. Her dinner show was beyond my wildest dreams, her taidan announcement HURT, despite my best efforts to be prepared for it, she KNOCKED IT OUT OF THE PARK this year with Kiroku and Shou Fu Kan, her ochakais continued to rock, Ai no Tabitachi was the most moving thing I will ever experience in my life, the love she has for what she does continued to shine, and man, have y’all seen her smiles lately? Nanami Hiroki was the most important part of my 2018 in Takarazuka.
Additionally: I’d like to thank Shiiran and Toa Reiya for KILLING it together on Instagram, and the Davinci finale made me more physically uncomfortable than I have ever been in public.
I’m looking forward to: Elbe/Estrellas ♡, everything about the end of Kai’s time in Takarazuka because I feel like it’s going to be full of joy and light, OCEANS 11, On the 20th Century, the change that 2019 might bring about as far as top combis go (as much as some of those are gonna hurt), Thunderbolt Fantasy on Blu Ray, and the uncertainty that comes with any new year. Who knows what we’re going to be seeing that hasn’t been announced yet.
I feel so lucky I got to see every troupe in action this year, and so thankful for the new perspectives I’ve gained thanks to that. What an amazing thing we all love. Here’s to 2018!

THUNDERBOLT FANTASY/AMAZING STAR☆KILLER ROUGE - Hoshigumi, 2018
Tumblr media
Disclaimer: I can’t call this a review. I don’t really speak Japanese, and what I understand is sort of limited, so I don’t think it’s fair for me to put my thoughts and opinions out as a REVIEW. I absolutely did not grasp the entirety of this show and will not pretend I did.  I’m just someone who really loves Takarazuka, knows some Japanese, loves Hoshigumi more than air, is enthralled with Thunderbolt Fantasy as a show in and of itself, and was privileged enough to see this production four times. Here is a (very long) collection of thoughts!
THUNDERBOLT FANTASY~
This entire experience was a blast from start to finish.  When Thunderbolt Fantasy was announced as Hoshigumi’s tour show, I think a lot of us were rightfully CAUTIOUSLY CURIOUS about the entire situation, especially after we looked up the source material and found a PUPPET SHOW. I remember watching the first episode with a friend, having only the tentative top/nibante/top musumeyaku casting and thinking “wow that’s uh ambitious and confusing but I kind of love it.”  Well, reader, I can personally confirm that in the end, I more than kind of loved it.  I’m currently nine episodes into the TV series and what I can say is the Takarazuka production MOSTLY follows it so far, up until about episode seven, where they start making some sacrifices in order to fit a 13 episode TV show into an hour and some change stage production. Names are a bit confusing, and even the Takarazuka main website put up a glossary of terms, so you know you’re getting into Something before you even start.
The BASIC, BASIC, BARE BONES PLOT is as follows (I am using the JAPANESE CHARACTER names for consistency):
THE PLOT:
Tan Hi (Kisaki Airi) and her brother, Tan Ko (Toudou Jun) are part of a clan that is tasked with protecting a sacred sword. Obviously, A Group Of Bad Guys™ led by Betsu Ten Gai (Tenju Mitsuki) followed by Ryo Mi (Arisa Hitomi), Cho Mei (Amahana Ema), and Zan Kyo (Ooki Makoto) ALSO want the sacred sword. Tan Hi and Tan Ko are ambushed and attacked by Zan Kyo, and Tan Ko (Airi’s character’s brother) is killed. Tan Hi escapes with the hilt of the sacred sword (hereafter: TENGYOKEN), but is in pretty bad shape.
Meanwhile in the woods, Shou Fu Kan (Nanami Hiroki), a wandering swordsman, is trying to escape the rain and does so by taking an umbrella from over a Buddha Statue. Enter Lin Setsu A (Kurenai Yuzuru), a VERY CANONICALLY MYSTERIOUS AND VAGUE guy who immediately starts giving Shou Fu Kan grief for taking the Buddha’s umbrella, to which Shou Fu Kan replies, “If the stone Buddha gets wet, it will be fine, but if I get wet, I will catch a cold.” Touche, cute swordsman. Enter Tan Hi, still being pursued by Zan Kyo. Tan Hi is in very bad shape, and Shou Fu Kan fights Zan Kyo, Zan Kyo severs his own head.  After, in the land of evil, Betsu Ten Gai receives Zan Kyo’s severed head (really) and accesses his memory, the last of which is Shou Fu Kan giving his name immediately before Zan Kyo is beheaded. Betsu Ten Gai now is targeting Shou Fu Kan who obviously has something to do with the Tengyoken. Betsu Ten Gai sends his lackeys after Shou Fu Kan and co.
I won’t go any more into the plot (and unfortunately Wikipedia can’t really help you), but if you’re interested I really recommend you watch the TV show, because it is INTERESTING. From there, Ken San Un (Rei Makoto) enters and joins the party because he is a classic cocky charming young boy protagonist who wants to make a name for himself, along with Lin Setsu A’s old “friends”, Shu Un Sho (an archer, played by Kizaki Reo), Kei Gai (a NECROMANCER played by Yumeki Anru), and Setsu Mu Sho, (a LITERAL SERIAL KILLER who wants Lin Setsu A DEAD, played by Mao Yuuki.) Every one of these characters has a complicated and not overtly stated motive, and NONE of them agree on any tactics which is further complicated by the fact that half of them aren’t even human and Demon Motives Are Different. The one thing they have in common is that they all want the Tengyoken out of Betsu Ten Gai’s hands.
THE PLAY ITSELF:  This was an anime stage play. If you like anime stage plays, you will LOVE Thunderbolt Fantasy. If you have ever loved a video game, an anime, a fantasy story, or THOUGHT you might love a video game, anime, or fantasy story, this play is going to be FUN for you. I felt like I was INSIDE a game in the Final Fantasy series. The technical aspects of the show BLEW ME AWAY. The coolest lighting effects I have seen in my life are in this play. The set is effective at getting across where we are, and projections are used to pretty cool effect this time around, in my opinion. There are LITERALLY only three and a half sung songs in this entire musical, one being the title song sung by the main players, one being another T.M. Revolution song sung by Kurenai Yuzuru to introduce the rest of the characters, one beautiful sweet little half song sung by Kisaki Airi, and one being just something they gave Rei Makoto at the start of the show because she’s technically Hoshigumi’s nibante but you wouldn’t know it just from watching this show.  Which brings us to the cast!
THE CAST: PERFECT and weird. Kurenai Yuzuru as Lin Setsu A was honestly genius. I saw this production with a friend who knows only a little about Takarazuka, knows Beni tangentially, has seen one episode of Thunderbolt Fantasy and she said “that role was made for Beni.” He is sly and manipulative and FUNNY and his motives are ENTIRELY unknown. Beni sings what she sings fantastically, and it’s VERY good to see her slinking around the stage with a sly fox smile all the time.  Nanami Hiroki as Shou Fu Kan. I wouldn’t normally list her second, but in this case, she was the nibante role. I have NO idea why this didn’t go to Rei Makoto, except maybe because Kai can play a disgruntled but good natured adult man better than she can play a like spunky sixteen year old boy. Shou Fu Kan is the protagonist of Thunderbolt and they did NOT change that even ONE BIT for this play. The story directly relied on her action and without spoiling anything, the coolest stage magic and ridiculously anime moment I have ever seen in my life involved her center stage in the final battle, Making It Happen. She has pretty much The Last Moment in the show. She has one-liners and dry humor and handles stage combat INCREDIBLY. Shou Fu Kan is just a morally good guy who doesn’t want trouble and does want to Do The Right Thing. This role was AMAZING for her (I am biased.), and I can’t wait to see how the tour audiences take it.
Kisaki Airi as Tan Hi. This is my favorite role I have ever seen Airi in. She was the best at stage combat in the entire troupe, and she acted her pants off. Her character goes through a lot of unecessary bullshit and suffering and she remains wholly likeable through it all. Her motivations are clear and her relationships with the other characters are believable and specific. She also has some really lovely comic bits.
Rei Makoto as Ken San Un. Coto was playing a spunky kid and honestly Coto was born to play spunky kids (but what wasn’t Coto born to play?) Ken San Un has an ego that IS backed up by skill, and he really just wants to Make A Name For Himself, Impress A Girl, and do the right thing. Her voice is as usual, killer, and her character is INSANELY charming, especially when interacting with Tan Hi. There’s a lot of complexity in this role too, and Coto handles it fantastically. They padded this role out a lot, which worked well and didn’t seem forced whatsoever, but even so, it was a solidly supporting role. Hopefully Coto got some well deserved rest in the process.
The rest of the roles were similarly well-cast. Hoshigumi’s focus on ensemble casts like they did here and with Another World REALLY do them all some favors. Tenju Mitsuki made short but crucial appearances as the MAIN VILLAN and got to show off the unhinged wildness that made her Mercutio so fantastic. Amahana Ema and Arisa Hitomi were good henchmen, Arisa Hitomi has a cool little fight and a costume with neat slits that make her movement interesting. The characters could have dealt with more development, but they’re also fairly one-dimensional in the show. Mao Yuuki as a serial killer was hard to buy, but she did what she could with a role that in the TV show is like stoic and, well, literally a puppet. Yumeki Anru kind of absolutely SLAYED being a hot demon with a whip, her interactions with fellow demonic entity Beni were true to the show, and she sings fantastically. Kizaki Reo is actually insanely handsome as the really gruff archer with (surprise) also dubious morals. Her voice also SHOCKED me in all the right ways. Other characters were played by everyone else, and the smaller cast meant that a lot of the kids got little moments in prolonged exposition scenes as storytellers or townspeople or evil henchmen. This troupe is in good hands with the younger ones, I think. Shoutout to EVERY ONE OF THE MAIN CAST (and Ruri Hanaka and Sumika Amane, playing TINY roles) for balancing weird puppet-inspired physicality and quirks from the show with like, actual human acting and movement.
AMAZING STAR ☆ KILLER ROUGE~
More of us have seen Killer Rouge, so this doesn’t need as much from me.  This production, as a tour, has gone through some changes. Notably, the postman number sung by Seo Yuriya/Honoka Kozakura/Seira Hitomi was cut (and literally none of those three were in this because of Bow Hall/injury (get well, Honoka ♥️ ). Solos sung by Toa Reiya/Hanagata Hikaru/Seo Yuriya were mostly distributed to Amahana Ema/Tenju Mitsuki/Kizaki Reo/Amato Kanon etc. The Nippon Seinenkan stage doesn’t make ANY sense for this revue, which originally made pretty nice use of stairs/the ginkyou/the SPACE they had in Mura and Tokyo.  Mask of Rouge got ANOTHER wig option and Nanami Hiroki seems to just be rotating through them entirely at her own chaotic will, which creates a really high stakes Russian Roulette Situation in terms of how Hot Mask Of Rouge Will Be.  The Rose of Versailes/Disgaea/Wonder Rouge section of the revue was SOLIDLY the most charming thing I have ever seen in my life.  Mao Yuuki has joined the Wonder Five audience participation bit in place of Seo Yuriya and Tenju Mitsuki is up there in place of Hanagata Hikaru. This troupe can ad lib like NO ONE’S BUSINESS or more accurately, Beni and Airi can ad lib like no one’s business, Coto occasionally has some bursts of inspiration, and Kai can’t begin to keep a straight face when put on the spot.  There are a lot of new numbers, and all of them are in my opinion, really Good. There’s also a LENGTHY Beniko/Aiko/Reiko ad lib section always beginning with some discussion about studying Chinese and always giving away the fact that Coto and Airi are working harder at that than Beni seems to be.  That said, Beni does have a REALLY BEAUTIFUL AND SIMPLE AND CLASSIC solo kuroenbi situation that is in Chinese and to my (English speaking ears) it sounds really good. We’ll see I guess.  Coto/Airi/Ema have a HEAVY METAL ROCK NUMBER that’s kind of hot and totally in all their powerhouse ranges.  The pegasus/everyone in multicolored outfits is really satisfying to me and would be to any other Hoshigumi fan despite the fact that I don’t love Toa Reiya’s taidan solo going to someone else (which I admit is just maybe because I loved Toa Reiya.)  There’s a cute little number (Timing) with Airi, Minato Rihi, and Yuunagi Ryou. Yuunagi Ryou is CUTE. The number is cute. The kickline was a little different and also involved some girls who weren’t in it originally because it’s not just the whole 104th class anymore and they needed to make up for THAT in a fierce way. Shoutout to all the girls who jumped in and killed it. ♥️ Ruri Hanaka specifically caught my eye and also had a nice solo in the whole costume party number.  Jounetsu no Arashi was replaced for whatever reason but the number thats in it’s place now is equally as hot and like involves some counting in Spanish and a lot of rowdy otokoyaku energy which is my single greatest weakness.
For me, as a Hoshigumi fan until the day I die probably, Killer Rouge was incredible. So many people got little chances to shine, and the fun the actresses were having with it was PALPABLE. I loved the vast majority of the costumes and set pieces and little themed moments, and I loved the new numbers, and I did not miss the numbers that were cut (save for Jounetsu no Arashi because Coto licking her lips was pretty good.) I got to see the people I love most doing a revue that was so joyful and energetic and group-focused. I could not have asked for more.
I’d give Thunderbolt Fantasy/Killer Rouge a 100/10, which will surprise no one who has ever met me.
Thanks Hoshigumi, and good luck in Taiwan!
