Related to my other post about Neku the other day.

This scene is what gives the best glimpse of what Neku was like before the Game. They just saw Rhyme getting erased, and Neku is hurt and lashes out on Shiki, opening about his feelings at the same time. We need to remember that at this moment, Neku is still amnesiac and doesn't truly remember anything about his past. Still, I believe he truly means those words since he never takes them back even after regaining his memories.

As I said in the other post, Neku doesn't hate people. What he hates is getting hurt because of others, and this is perfectly explained here: the word hurt itself is highlighted in his dialogue. But there's also something else, that we can find again in neo: it's this need of real, genuine human connection. Neku hates having friends because he thinks that the connection friends have is fake and based on lies. It tracks with what he says afterwards during his week with Joshua: you can't truly understand others, so any connection you will have with people won't be genuine and true.

At the beginning of the Game, Neku is selfish. There's no going around it: he pushes others away because they might hurt him, he tries to kill Shiki to save his own skin (remember Uzuki's words? "You're the star, kiddo. Just do things your way. [...] What are you waiting for? Do what comes naturally. Save yourself. Screw everybody else, right?"), he doesn't consider for a second that she needs him as much as he needs her to stay alive. Because of this selfishness, he doesn't believe that others can offer genuine kindness to others, that everytime someone does something nice to someone it's to get something from it—thus, the idea of people "pretending to agree with you" so you end up caring about them and getting hurt afterwards. It was all their big plan, right? And Neku doesn't want to walk into that.

So you'd think that because of that and his hatred towards liars, Neku would be mad at Shiki for lying about her appearance for almost the whole week, right? But our favourite emo boy simply tells her "Everyone has their off days, right?" when she apologises that they might fail the mission (and get erased) because of her. So what happened? What made him change that much? Well, the answer is simple enough: Shiki.

Shiki's kindness, her dream to make people happy with clothes, her insistence on the fact that "Not all lies are bad ones", her forgiveness and will go give others a second chance... Everything Shiki did, unknowingly, brought Neku to consider that maybe, just maybe, people weren't all that bad. Taking a peek into Shiki's world made Neku expand his own. She might have lied, but that was because she was scared and lost, just like him, and he sees himself in her—just two teenagers thrown into a game of life or death, holding on to their beliefs and trying to work together despite the hurt they're both carrying. I believe this is what makes Neku start to change—it's only the start, and his two other Partners will, too, help him to keep going towards that path of change.

It all comes up to that big lie in neo—that I already talked about here—the fact that he tells everyone that he doesn't know who sent him to Shinjuku. Neku, the blunt, brutally honest Neku Sakuraba, who hated lies because he firmly believed that nothing good could come of it, that they would only hurt people and especially people close to you like your friends, lying, openly, to the whole group of the Wicked Twisters—including Beat! Incredible. I just wanted to elaborate a little more on that, because that hatred ran deep, and despite everything, Neku managed to change that much.

So...it's been a while since I last posted anything on this blog, huh? One of my new year's resolutions for 2024 is to post my art online more instead of limiting myself to just a handful of sites few people can see

Hachiko: The world's most loyal dog turns 100

The Chinese tagline on the movie poster says it all: "I will wait for you, no matter how long it takes."

It tells the true story of Hachiko, the faithful dog that continued to wait for its master at a train station in Japan long after his death.

The cream white Akita Inu, born 100 years ago, has been memorialised in everything from books to movies to the cult science fiction sitcom Futurama.

And the Chinese iteration - the third after a Japanese version in 1987, and the Richard Gere-starrer in 2009 - is a hit at the box office.

There have been tales of other devoted hounds such as Greyfriars Bobby, but none with the global impact of Hachiko.

A bronze statue of him has stood outside Shibuya Station in Tokyo, where he waited in vain for a decade, since 1948.

The statue was first erected in 1934 before being recycled for the war effort during World War Two.

Japanese schoolchildren are taught the story of Chuken Hachiko - or loyal dog Hachiko - as an example of devotion and fidelity.

''Hachiko represents the ideal Japanese citizen with his unquestioning devotion," says Professor Christine Yano of the University of Hawaii - "loyal, reliable, obedient to a master, understanding, without relying upon rationality, their place in the larger scheme of things."

The story of Hachiko

Hachiko was born on 10 November 1923 in the city of Odate in Akita prefecture, the original home of Akitas.

A large-sized Japanese dog, the Akita is one of the country's oldest and most popular breeds.

Designated by the Japanese government as a national icon in 1931, they were once trained to hunt animals like wild boar and elk.

"Akita dogs are calm, sincere, intelligent, and brave [and] obedient to their masters," said Eietsu Sakuraba, author of an English language children's book about Hachiko.

"On the other hand, it also has a stubborn personality and is wary of anyone other than its master."

The year Hachiko was born, Hidesaburo Ueno, a renowned agricultural professor and a dog lover, asked a student to find him an Akita puppy.

After a gruelling train journey, the puppy arrived at the Ueno residence in Shibuya district on 15 January 1924, where it was initially thought dead.

According to Hachiko's biographer, Prof Mayumi Itoh, Ueno and his wife Yae nursed him back to health over the next six months.

Ueno named him Hachi, or eight in Japanese. Ko is an honorific bestowed by Ueno's students.

The long wait

Ueno took a train to work several times a week. He was accompanied to Shibuya station by his three dogs, including Hachiko. The trio would then wait there for his return in the evening.

On 21 May 1925, Ueno, then 53, died of a cerebral hemorrhage. Hachiko had been with him for just 16 months.

"While people were attending the wake, Hachi smelled Dr Ueno from the house and went inside the living room. He crawled under the coffin and refused to move," writes Prof Itoh.

Hachiko spent the next few months with different families outside Shibuya but eventually, in the summer of 1925, he ended up with Ueno's gardener Kikusaburo Kobayashi.

Having returned to the area where his late master lived, Hachiko soon resumed his daily commute to the station, rain or shine.

"In the evening, Hachi stood on four legs at the ticket gate and looked at each passenger as if he were looking for someone," writes Prof Itoh.

Station employees initially saw him as a nuisance. Yakitori vendors would pour water on him and little boys bullied and hit him.

However, he gained nationwide fame after Japanese daily Tokyo Asahi Shimbun wrote about him in October 1932.

The station received donations of food for Hachiko each day, while visitors came from far and wide to see him.

Poems and haikus were written about him. A fundraising event in 1934 to make a statue of him reportedly drew a crowd of 3,000.

Hachiko's eventual death on 8 March 1935 at the age of 11 made the front page of many newspapers. He was found on a street in Shibuya.

In March 2011, scientists finally settled the cause of death of Hachikō: the dog had both terminal cancer and a filaria infection.

There were also four yakitori skewers in Hachikō's stomach, but the skewers did not damage his stomach nor cause his death.

At his funeral, Buddhist monks offered prayers for him and dignitaries read eulogies. Thousands visited his statue in the following days.

In impoverished post-war Japan, a fundraising drive for a new statue of Hachiko even managed to raise 800,000 yen, an enormous sum at the time, worth about 4bn yen (£22m; $28m) today.

"In retrospect, I feel that he knew that Dr Ueno would not come back, but he kept waiting - Hachiko taught us the value of keeping faith in someone," wrote Takeshi Okamoto in a newspaper article in 1982.

As a high school student, he had seen Hachiko at the station daily.

Remembering Hachiko

Every year on 8 April, a memorial service for Hachiko is held outside Shibuya Station.

His statue is often decorated with scarves, Santa hats and, most recently, a surgical mask.

His mount is on display at the National Museum of Nature and Science in Tokyo.

Some of his remains are interred at the Aoyama Cemetery, alongside Ueno and Yae.

Statues of him have also been cast in Odate, Ueno's hometown Hisai, the University of Tokyo and Rhode Island, the American setting for the 2009 movie.

Odate also has a series of events lined up this year for his 100th birthday.

Will the world's most loyal dog still be celebrated a century from now? Prof Yano says yes because she believes the "heroism of Hachiko" is not defined by any particular period - rather it is timeless.

Mr Sakuraba is equally optimistic.

"Even 100 years from now, this unconditional, devoted love will remain unchanged, and the story of Hachiko will live on forever."

A little odd, since there's no need to hold one while we're here, but I suppose if it's to allow him his Psychs... Pit: ...Psychs? Joshua: Think of it as analogous to that, "PSI" those little boys like throwing around. For example, you see that Aqua Ghost pin he's wearing? That gives him the Psych of Splash Core. Palutena: Thank you, Joshua. Pit, Splash Core is a projectile that stays immobile until it's hit. If YOU manage to hit it back while it's moving, it'll count as your KO! Pit: Um... KO?

Pit: Woah, this guy means business! Viridi: That's Leon S. Kennedy, a survivor of the Raccoon City incident. Pit: Raccoon City? That sounds kinda cute. All those little guys running around... Viridi: It most certainly was NOT cute! Raccoon City was infected at large by the G-Virus, and the whole city, even the animals, was turned into zombies! Those lousy Umbrella Corp humans... I'll NEVER forgive them! Pit: Wait! Back up! ZOMBIES ARE REAL?! Viridi: How are YOU scared of zombies?! You took on the Underworld Army! Palutena: Pit, focus on the match at hand. The Secrets of Shibuya - Chapter 1

Intro post

Case File #857 - Neku Sakuraba.

Age: 15 years

Gender: Male

Cause of Death: Gunshot to the frontal lobe of the cranium

Classification: Homicide

Witness accounts: A young blonde male in baggy cloths is seen with an older darker male, both with guns. After shooting the older male, the blonde turns to the victim and proceeds to shoot him. Witness does not see where the older dark male goes and claims the blonde vanishes into thin air shortly afterward.

Suspects: None

Fuma Ishida leans against the wall behind him, taking his eyes off Udagawa's mural in front of him for a moment in order to reassess the case notes he had written down on his notepad.

The murder had happened 2 days ago, and since then, no new leads had popped up. It was as if the murderers had really just vanished into thin air. With such a small amount to go off of, most of the people in his department had given up on the case, even nicknaming it the "Impossible Case." But Fuma would not give up so easily. After all, fame does not come to the meek and unmotivated.

Fuma places the notepad back into the pocket of his trench coat and begins his walk to the Shibuya Central Hospital.

8 hours earlier, an anonymous caller informed the police department about possibly having some information that could help in their investigation. However, when the caller was asked to come down to the station, she had refused, claiming that the hospital she was staying at would not let her leave as they were still observing her. Thankfully, the caller agreed to give to give them her personal info and a visitors pass that would allow one person to enter her room for questioning. With no other choice, Fuma agreed to go meet with her around 6 pm.

Fuma walked towards the door of her room, giving a small bow to the nurse that had led him here. Entering the room, he first noticed how small it was. With only a bed, a window, and an old standard television set, the room seemed empty and slightly crowded.

The second thing he noticed was a young girl with an oxygen mask looking directly at him. Sunlight seeped through the window, highlighting her dark hair and pale face with an orange glow.

"Good evening, Miss Hori. I am Detective Fuma Ishida from the Shibuya Police Department. I understand there was some information that you believed could be essential to our investigation?"

Lynn Hori was the name given to him. After a small bit of digging, they learned she was only 16 years old and diagnosed with a severe case of pneumonia that had almost taken her life.

Now, she was in the hospitals recovery center, no longer thought to be contagious but being monitored as she was still struggling to breathe properly.

Lynn reaches upwards and removes her oxygen mask carefully. Gently, she placed it on the small side table next to her. She stared at the mask for a few moments. Her eyes looked unfocused, as if her mind was else where. However, the look was gone as soon as it had appeared.

"It is a pleasure to meet you, Detective, but please, just call me Lynn." There was another pause as she fiddled with her hands, likely considering how to continue from here. "Yesterday evening, I saw the news channel talking about your case... how no one knew anything about it other than a witness who claimed the men had vanished into thin air." Her grip tightened on the sheets of her bed, most likely out of nervousness.

"Yes, that is correct, Miss Hori. Am I correct to assume you know something?" Fuma pulled up in a spare chair from the corner of the room to her bed. Taking his jacket off and flinging it over the back of the chair, he proceeded to get comfortable, just in case this may take a while. In his experience, these things occasionally would.

"Yes." She paused again. Was she really that scared of him? Perhaps she felt guilty for the accident, or perhaps she herself has already committed a crime of some sort and is scared she'll get caught. Either way, Fuma suspected what she was about to say was possibly the biggest lead in the case. Leaning forward in his chair, he gave her his full, undivided attention. "I have reason to believe the murders as you call them are... not of this world."

Fuma stared at her. Although his face was emotionless, internally, he was dumbfounded. 'Extraterrestrial? That sounds ridiculous. Does this girl seriously believe that I would believe in such childish nonsense? Unless... perhaps she's talking about some sort of new gang? I will admit I had some suspensions that Neku's death may have been the result of a gang turf war...'

"Might I ask you what made you think this?"

Lynn looked him in the eyes. All signs of her previously timid self were gone. The dark circles under her eyes mixed with the glow evening sun only served to intensify the determined expression on her face. All together, her face vaguely reminded him of a few of his senior officers when they were telling some of their darker stories. "To be frank, I saw it in my dream last week."

"I see." Fuma let out a sigh. 'I should have known better.'

"In that case, I thank you for your time, Miss Hori. But I'm afraid I should be leaving now." Yuma stood up and put his coat back on.

A panicked looked flashed across Lynn's face. "W-wait! I swear I'm telling the truth! I-I don't remember much from this dream, but the vanishing into thin air reminded me of it! I'm certain that those guys must have had something to do with it! I had -" Lynn is interrupted by her own coughs and gasps for air. Fuma's eyes widened as he rushed over to her side and handed her back her oxygen mask, helping her place it over her head in order to regain her breath.

It wasn't that he didn't believe her. He had no doubt of her sincerity. However, he was not about to steak this case and his career on the dream of an ill little girl.

'Perhaps she's still suffering from a fever. I should inform the doctors before leaving at least.'

"I am certain you are correct, Miss Hori, but I'm afraid you should rest more before we continue this conversation." He watched as Lynn shook her head, looking very frustrated but taking deep breaths into the oxygen mask. Seeing as she has recovered slightly from the asthma attack, Fuma once again made his way to the door, looking back only once more to see Lynn looking out the window, deep in thought.

It did not take long for Fuma to find a doctor and inform them of what had happened in the room. It was what the doctor had informed him that made Fuma rethink the events.

SUMMARY

Suzujiro (Sato Ryuji) is a gambler who has been left all alone in the world. With a greedy nature and sticky fingers, he is loved only by the God of Gambling. One day, Suzujiro wins a bet with a demon, and gets his hands on a beautiful woman. The name of the woman is "Hakana" (Nanaki Kanon). Here's how people voted :

But. If you put together option 1 and option 3, which are both against option 2, you obtain more than half of the votes. More than half of the voters don't want option 2 to win.

FFXIVWrite 2023 Finished Masterpost

I originally had a masterpost for the month that I sporadically updated as it went, but now that its finished, my pre-month ramblings about hoping I could do well to keep up didn't fit anymore for a finished masterpost, and I had enough pieces to fit into nice categories for presentation that I figured it'd be better to make a new masterpost for a cleaner layout.

In a surprising and unintended turn, a lot of the stories I wrote had an underlying theme of first meetings and impressions. A lot of that probably furthered by the Yuri mini-collection, but even before then, quite a few had that style to them.

19 works overall, especially since for much of this month, time wasn't on my side and I couldn't write for as many prompts as I would've liked. But I'm very proud of what I did manage and what I was able to achieve.

This is gonna be very hard to decide but I'll try my best. Gonna stick this under a Read More 'cause this shit boutta be long as hell:

1) Neku Sakuraba from The World Ends With You

He's the main character of the story that changed my life. He was very relatable to me at the time I first consumed TWEWY over a decade ago, and even now I still have a lot in common with him. Neku is very important to me because taught me a lot and impacted me in a way that I feel like I'd be a completely different person had I never encountered TWEWY during those formative years.

2) Kakashi Hatake from Naruto

I don't have some profound reason for Kakashi like I did Neku. But I think he was the very first character I ever became obsessed with or cared about deeper than just liking them because I liked the media they were in. And realistically, what's not to like about him.

(From here onward the accuracy of the list may dwindle because of the sheer amount of media I've consumed. I'll probably forget someone or important or simply be unable to decide, so take who I choose with a pinch of salt, especially in order. I have many faves and I am only certain about Neku and Kakashi's places on this list).

3) Sophie Hatter from Howl's Moving Castle

Because HMC is my favorite Ghibli movie I may be biased, but I always looked up to Sophie due to her strength and capacity to love free of judgments and despite any ugliness, inside or out. She's pretty, kind, brave, and tough, all the things I wanted to grow up to be as a kid when I first saw HMC.

4) Shizuku from Whisper of the Heart

Shizuku is one of my favorites for a more specific and personal reason; because we're both writers. I see in her a lot of myself when I was younger and even now. Having the desire to write something you can be proud of and satisfied with, to the point of being hard on yourself and emotional when you fall short of your own expectations. She's a complicated ball of emotions, but she's got tenacity and a love for whimsy that she puts into her writing. I just find her relatable and lovable.

6) The Chocobros from FFXV

Nooow I know this is cheating by including all of them, pero like... Do not separate! No but realistically, I can't choose one of them over the other because I love them all for different reasons, but I'd also be remiss to not add any of them to this list. They all had such an impact on my life, brought me joy during a particularly dark time, and their friendship and bond is something I envy and seek to have for myself someday.

7) Kotetsu T. Kaburagi from Tiger & Bunny

Would y'all crucify me if I said he's my favorite superhero across all media? I mean it honestly. Kotetsu is the embodiment of what a hero should be, his attitude, morals, and passion for helping others. He's like the perfect protag to me. He gets bonus points for being a goofy dorky single dad who's tryng his best, and is also hot.

8) Shigeo Kageyama from Mob Psycho 100

Do I even need to explain this one. Mob taught me so much about being kind and forgiving to not only others but yourself. Not many pieces of media have touched me in a way that MP100 has, and Mob fits into a lot of my favorite protag tropes. He's just a simple, sweet darling boy and he's so cherished and important to me.

9) Yona from Akatsuki no Yona

One of the female protagonists of all time. I love her for many of the same reasons I love Sophie, but she's just 10x more cool. As Spike Spiegel once said, I love a woman who can kick my ass.

10) My OC Seth Manolis

Now I realize this may be cheating but I couldn't decide on the last character, and I'd argue he technically counts according to your criteria, because he's the protag of two novels I wrote myself. I created Seth when I was 14, writing little "journal entries" about his life on Deviantart back in the day to cope with me starting high school, but over the years his story has evolved into something serious and now I'm writing a whole trilogy about him (on the third book now). He's very important to me because writing his story has got me through a lot in my life, and I put so many pieces of myself into him, although not exactly a self-insert.
