Even though I very rarely talk about them on here, I really should explain more about Richard, Valentine, and Zinnia. I think part of the reason I do less of this is because it's a contemporary adult romance setting and lots of people who follow me by now know that I do fantasy more (hence TYC).

Richard is a gay concept artist and/or character designer living in New York, Zinnia as well. They're best friends and they met through work, and Richard is the more chaotic act first/think second of the two. Always on the move, he's working two jobs because the viddy game one isn't sustaining him (he also works at best buy as a truck loader).

Richard has a roommate that's barely in the apartment and when he is he kinda ghosts around. Then he disappears one day and he doesn't come back and rent is due and then it's due again and Richard is like. Pissed off esp since the guys alive he's just not responsible. Zinnia lives with her cousin in another apartment a few blocks away.

Val at this point is houseless and living on the street. Val and Richard meet through a mutual aid app where basically someone with means (whatever that may mean for Richard) helps out someone without any means.

Several pieces fall into place. Richards roommate leaves and now he's responsible for all his rent. An hourly job as a member of geek squad opens up at best buy and Richards annoying manager is a sucker for anything military. And global warming has created harsh winter blizzards and one is coming.

What do you know Valentine's a vet who majored in compsci and knows about computers and also needs an apartment to stay in and a job.

So Richard hounds his manager to hire Valentine and he gets the job. Now he's off the street, has a roof over his head even if it's a kinda shitty NY apartment. But also he's clearly a v quiet and reserved guy (terribly shy around new people).

But as the weather warms up they get warmer w each other and then they're pretty decent friends. Val gets poached by a guy at best buy and now he's got a much better paying salaried job. He's also started to develop feelings for Richard but he still thinks he's straight.

Richard has a dog that they both do initial bonding over. Her name is Clancy. Val has nightmares that Clancy wakes him up from.

Val and Zinnia also become closer friends cause they both have the same sense of humor and zinnia is genuinely just a nice person. She's the one to convince Val to get therapy since you know, he's got health insurance now so he might as well use it.

I absolutely love your story, I get really attached to good stories, I basically obsess over them, I check your profile everyday 5 times probably more to re read it or see if you have updated it yet haha so I’m sorry in advance is this is too much.

Let’s begin: 1. The way you wrote this story is amazing! The clarity of each detail, the characters past present and future, the unborn child, the trauma, the angst, the love, the appointments, the reader, Harry, the families everything! I love it.

2. Olivia, piss off. Hahahah sorry but I get it if I was in her shoes but honestly the audacity of her 2 chapters ago I think with talking about someone’s else’s child…. No thanks. Jail! Haha… I get it I do but go away thanks.

The reader is my favorite, the details of her life her past her family(which I can’t stand and I LOWKEY hope their not that baby shower to ruin her day and come back) the connection with her child, I love how she stood up for herself to everyone especially Harry when he did that to her, how she has basically let him in after what he did to her and creating a comfortable loving life for this child and putting her issues aside to make this work. I love how she ripped Harry a new one and I hope she does it again when the angst happens with finding the ring and their relo and why he did that to her. I love her and I’m so excited for her baby shower the gifts she wants I love it. I hope this isn't detracting from TBoU (bless Aki for being there for poor Yusei and helping him chill) but ch. 2's snippet with the boys is such a choice interaction. The way you portray Jack I couldn't put to words before but his dialogue here made me realise what it was that I find so entertaining: he's actually pretty intelligent and says intelligent things but has NO tact and is so dense it makes him look like a total dumbass, thank you for that, the man's on a completely different planet

Why would it detract from the story? I'm glad you liked that particular interaction that much!

And yeah, this is actually spot on in terms of how I interpret Jack: He isn't actually stupid, he can be fairly smart, there are just three particular caveats to his intelligence when I write him: One, what you mentioned. The guy is about as socially inept as it gets in his own, particular way, and thus manages to come off as stupid even when he isn't. Two: I think Jack is primarily interested in a few, particular topics (one of which is duelling) and doesn't care to inform himself much outside of those, leading to him sometimes coming off as stupid even though he could easily comprehend what's being dicussed, he's just not interested in it. This, in turn, is related to three: I think Jack despises doing things he can't get good at quickly. This is, for example, the reason why I recently described him as being "suspiciously good at figuring out issues with his runner". Because the thing is, I think Jack understands how his runner works and what's wrong with it decently (because turbo duelling is adjacent to duelling and thus something he's interested in and cares to inform himself about), he's just dogshit at fixing the damned thing himself because that would require the patience and dedication to learn and practice how to fix it. And if there's one thing Jack Atlas does not have, it's patience. (This is also why I think he's a godwaful cook, for example. Because I'm convinced living in NDC as King gave Jack the necessary palate to know how good, qualitative food is supposed to taste—but learning to cook that himself would, again, require patience, of which he has absolutely zero.)
