Explain the scratchy scary door
Terrible-terrible-blog: Just today I have received ALL of these requests for an update. Checking in on my personal safety. And generally looking for the TRUTH, damn it, about my attic.
Tumblr media
Apparently, @stephrc79 told people I was the one to go with for updates about the murder attic/werewolf sanctuary/potential place where prior owners kept “unwanted” family members.
Tumblr media
The thirst for the truth is REAL and STRONG with many of you. Honestly, I am almost loathe to post this follow-up because I don’t want to squelch your fantastical imaginations. And I know that for many of you, any answer will be suspect as the REAL TRUTH may be so shameful or so sensitive that I would never just share it here. I mean, I could be trying to throw you off the track simply by acknowledging that I MIGHT be trying to throw you off the track.
You. Just. Never. Know.
But, I shall briefly address each most popular question and theory (with some new photographic evidence) in turn:
(1) What’s on the other side of the door? Are you okay? Did you survive?
Yes, my husband, my two dogs, and I continue to safely occupy our house. @stephrc79 continues to be alive and well in NYC (unless someone is playing a MUCH longer bout of con-man chess ... I’m only proficient in con-man checkers) though she also says she’s coming back to Boston in August so at that time I will be able to report back first-hand on her continued aliveness.
NOTE: I am putting the rest of the answer to this under a “Read More” so that, if you wish the murder attic to remain a mystery on which to project your darkest fear or wildest imagination, you may continue to do so. Of course, that might also mean that whatever I’m going to post is so sensational that I just can’t share it with everyone....you’ll never know if you don’t click.
May I start with presenting you, again, with a picture of the “closet” in our guest bedroom that started this entire affair. There was a period where I was considering adding either a purple or turquoise accent wall in that room. Anyone think that’s a good idea or have a vote on which color would be better?
Tumblr media
I think they’re both a bit dark honestly, but not quite as dark as they look here. BUT ANYWAY....this is, as I’ve mentioned before, an old-school solid wood door that matches all the other doors in our upstairs to the other bedrooms and closets. The doorknob is an old-style brass one with a built-in lock that no one has the key for anymore. However, the padlock (which you will notice is openable from the INSIDE is much more modern. My belief is that it was added when the prior owners had their home inspected so they could adopt - the lock would have allowed them to keep small children OUT of the attic but would have prevented anyone from accidentally being locked INTO the attic.
Here is what you see when you look up the attic stairs with the light ON:
Tumblr media
It is, I’m sorry to inform you, basically an attic. We store our crap up there. Here’s what it looks like at the top of the stairs:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yup, it’s basically your run of the mill attic full of crap. We keep some bookshelves up there because OBVIOUSLY, we have more books than sense. Plus I have, at various points over the years, convinced myself that I’m going to start boxing up my clothes and only taking out what I need seasonally. All that really means is that I haven’t seen the clothes in those boxes for years.
To address theories that this was used to house an “unsavory” relative by some past owners - the truth is that that is relatively unlikely. The roof in the attic is low enough that even at its peak, it is barely over 5 feet high. Almost everyone has to crouch up there. And there isn’t really ANY insulation so it is generally either brutally hot or cold up there. It also has absolutely NO finishings that suggest anyone ever lived there.
Now, of course, it’s possible that people really were just THAT cruel in the olden days but the truth is that this type of house of this age has attic entries out of bedrooms like this all the time. As you can see if you read the comments on the original post, one of the most popular comments is “I’m from New England too and I have one of these....doesn’t everyone?” Trust me, this isn’t even CLOSE to the creepiest random attic or closet door that I’ve seen in a friend’s house (and don’t even talk about some of the basements). Also as a final note, while my house is old, it’s not THAT old. It was built in about 1905-1915, I forget the exact year, which was (generally speaking) at the tail end of the time that you would think of as having mentally or physically disabled relatives living in attics or having live-in servants (not to mention that my house is not THAT big and the original/early owners probably weren’t THAT wealthy).
Now as to the scratchy door that caused so much consternation - I know the point that someone made on the CSI: Attic Door post was that the scratches simply were too wide and too deep and too high to have possibly been made by dogs.  But here are pictures of the scratches compared to my hand which is, honestly, about the same size as my larger dog Tucker’s paws.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The scratches really aren’t all THAT wide. And while they look kind of deep on first inspection, remember that this cork board (which I believe was part of the insulation between the attic and the second floor that was added in later by the people who owned the house before us) is extremely porous and easy to scratch. And if you’ve ever heard or seen a dog who was upset about being locked in somewhere and scratching to get out, you can easily imagine how their frantic scratching could do this much damage quite quickly.
And as to the height issue, not only is one of my dogs easily five feet tall when standing on his back paws, but I will also refer you back to the second picture. This door leads into STAIRS that go up to the attic. So if the door is closed, you’re actually standing on stairs, so you are naturally much higher up than you would normally be. Reaching that top lock would actually be easier than reaching the doorknob which might easily be below you if you were one or two stairs up.
So in short. I am very much alive and safe. The closet door leads to a staircase that leads into an everyday run of the mill attic. The most interesting thing to ever come out of that attic were the letters that were probably hidden under the floorboards and were found in my bathroom ceiling. It is extremely unlikely that any prisoners or shut-ins were ever kept up there. And there’s nothing particularly murdery about the attic itself...unless you’re scared of all attics (which is fair).
Also, werewolves aren’t real and even if they were....it would be TERRIBLY RUDE to blow up their spot by posting their full moon hideouts to the internet for the whole world to see. Just saying.

Fish Week Day 4
So Wednesday was pretty much spot on.  I’ll have to admit though it helped a bit that when I was craving snacks later in the evening it turned out I’ve been terrible at grocery shopping lately, and therefore I literally had nothing remotely snackish in the house (not even bread). Otherwise, dinner was swordfish cooked on my gas grill, along with egg noodles and green beans.  Lunch was chicken tenders and breakfast was a big pancake. Daily Result:  success And to give a serious answer to @tcfkag‘s snark:  originally I was including fish sticks in the challenge because I assumed I’d use them as a lunch on a day where I was going to have pasta or something for dinner.  Then my junk food craving kicked in on Monday and I went with terrible meal remembered fondly from childhood.  :P And to make you really shake your head sadly, it was Kraft mac and cheese, not even something fancy or homemade.  :D

Silk, from Belgariad
Here comes the Bro throwing it back old school. God, I love Silk okay....

Also, his fear of snakes doesn’t help him out so much.ship them with: I mean, is there any answer that isn’t Velvet? I guess Porenn if she weren’t married to his uncle obvi.brotp them with: Barack. Also, Hettar bc they’re humor kind of plays well off each other.needs to stay away from: Taur Urgas obvi. But in a less obvious choice, Relg, because my dude does not need to be triggered by memories of travelling through stone on the regular.misc. thoughts: I thought that Silk was one of the most well-developed characters in the Eddings universe and I just really enjoy basically all of his plot lines. Even the surprise brother, which normally I’d roll my eyes about.

Bisexual women married to men face zero homophobia and get to experience 100% straight passing privilege. I really don't feel sorry for bi women who never got to "explore" their love for women in college or whatever. Lesbians don't have a choice, and many have decided to be alone because they can't deal with the hate and violence. Maybe if bi women would have more sympathy for lesbians there would be less distrust of bi women from them.
Anony, not to be rude here but this is ridiculous and also internally contradictory. Your basic four points are:1) “Bi people (Ed note: but hey, sure, it’s only women) who are married to men face zero homophobia” - I mean, lots and lots and LOTS of people who later came out as gay or lesbian were previously married to a member of the opposite sex and straight passing because of internalized homophobia amongst other things. Do you really think homophobia didn’t impact their lives?
2) “I really don’t feel sorry for bi women who never [experimented’ in college].” First, you dislike bisexuals because we sleep with men and can be straight passing, implying bisexuals should be out in public and dating women to get to stay in the queer community’s big tent. And then immediately follow up by essentially saying that since bisexuals *can* be straight passing, that we should. Gay men and lesbian women did his for literally generations - marrying members of the opposite sex because they felt guilty, were forced to, or chose to, - but then many of them come out very late in life and sometimes end up destroying their entire relationship with their family. Knowing that, the fact that you seem to think that not acting on your sexual orientation will make it just poof goes away when you marry a member of the opposite sex.
3) “Lesbians don’t have a choice [etc]”: Anony, you keep seesawing between two arguments - that bi people don’t belong in the queer community bc we could “choose” to pass as straight...while then promptly stating, (correctly), that lesbians have no choice. You either believe one’s sexuality is an essential part of one’s being or you’re saying a bi person could just wake up and set it aside.
[Ed. Note]: in the post that I’m sure you’re replying to, I *specifically stated* that being a straight-passing white woman made life in society substantially easier. I even bolded that part. But the cost of that is being willing to stay in the closet for the rest.of.your.life.]
4) “ Lesbians...have decided to be alone because they can't deal with the hate and violence. Maybe if bi women would have more sympathy for lesbians there would be less distrust of bi women from them.”: So, the first sentence here is the peak of your cognitive dissonance in this ask. Because if you are invested in lesbians having a larger dating pool, then trying to fight the stigma against bisexual women in the lesbian community first/too; perhaps if we felt more welcomed, we’d feel more comfortable participating in and with the community, including dating women. [Ed. Note: Friendly reminder that this is basically precisely what my first post was about - that many lesbians refuse to date bi-women, creating a smaller dating universe for themselves while reminding bisexuals that we do not belong in the straight community but also aren’t accepted in the queer community either.] And that doesn’t even only apply to getting dates; larger groups have safety in numbers - ending some of the hate and violence you mention is by convincing people that there isn’t anything wrong with wlw. Logically then, it seems like it would be in the lesbian community’s best interest to try to associate bisexuals with them. But instead we are still stuck butting heads together about who gets to be what before we can stand up to that hate and violence you mentioned. Plus, not for nothing, I specifically stated in the post you’re probably talking about (I bolded it and everything) that I wasn’t comparing my experience AT ALL to the dangers/issues that non-straight passing people in the queer community. I’m not sure what you mean exactly about having more sympathy for lesbians even means in this case - does sympathy require that we don’t try to respond when people are attacking our sexual orientation? Do we only get to show it by sleeping or dating a certain number of women before we can date a man?5) “ Maybe if bi women would have more sympathy for lesbians there would be less distrust of bi women from them.” And here we meet the pinnacle of this post. So far you have wobbled between how bisexuals in relationships with men are choosing men and therefore not queer and that sexuality isn’t a choice...but that lesbians have no choice because their sexuality is valid while a bisexual isn’t.  You’re coming awfully close to the territory our parents and grandparents visit[ed] so often when they assume that a bisexual in a relationship with a member of the opposite sex ”makes you straight and cures your deviancy”.
So before I go on, just a quick f*ck you because I have a large group of queer friends and an 18-year-old trans mentee. I’ve been mentoring him since he was eleven. I will not accept anything in this country for less than total legal and societal protections the queer community, especially for kids like my mentee because I want him to grow up in a better world than people my age (or my parent’s age) did.So next you demand that we show more sympathy for lesbians and I’m just not sure what you mean by that. Do we show sympathy by not dating women or by dating women? At this point, I really not entirely sure anymore. And I can’t speak to all bisexual women in the world, but its partially due to reactions precisely like this one that keeps us from coming out - especially coming out and dating women. I suppose if we do start dating women, that we could also show our sympathy by never again sleeping with a man because we are lesbians now, because god-forbid we get marked as distrustful because we dated a man after we dated a woman (basically the converse of dating a man making you straight but that dating women makes us lesbians). Are those the sympathies you’re looking for?TL;DR - I never said bisexuals weren’t able to be straight passing and that we don’t face the same risks, which is true. But not being welcome in either community leaves us in a permanent state of limbo bc living openly, which many of us can’t or won’t do, means getting comments like the ones in this reply and the OP; if this is the way you treat bisexuals, I’m honestly not surprised none of them have wanted to date you or stay for a long time because you sound absolutely delightful.

Are there value in law schools outside the top 14? The u of m has a law school that’s #132 and instate tuition is under 20k. That sounds like a low ranking but it’s higher than the school over all
(To start off for those playing along at home, the “U of M” in this case is University of Memphis.)So the answer to this question actually also goes back to my original question I ask people no matter what about law school: why do you want to go to law school? Because the answer to this question is very different if the reason you want to go to law school is because you want to work at a big New York law firm or be a federal prosecutor at the DOJ or get on the bench and become a federal judge as opposed to wanting to go to law school in order to be a practicing attorney in Memphis or in Tennessee, possibly in a smaller satellite of a big firm, but much more likely in a small firm or working for a small business or starting your own law firm, something like that. The reason I describe those different tracks is because the answer to whether there is value for *you* in law schools outside the top 14 depends on what *you* want to do. Because schools like the University of Memphis (ranked in the 100-200 range for US News and World Report) are what one would probably consider a “local school” - i.e., a law school that has a good reputation in its smaller city/community that places students well in jobs in *those* places. This can be a good thing, especially if you know for sure that you will be staying in that town or city, but if you’re not sure you want to stay, you will find that in other towns and cities (and especially anywhere out of the state of Tennessee), seeing the University of Memphis on an applicants resume would be treated at best as a neutral but possibly even as a negative. And, most likely, the hiring person in HR won’t know anything about the school. And the issue gets worse the further you get from Memphis. But, if you do want to be a regular attorney in a town like Memphis, where there aren’t a lot of other law schools (even in the state,) then going to a place like University of Memphis makes a great deal of sense. And coming out of law school with significantly less debt may mean that the lower salaries likely paid attorneys in Memphis may not matter as much. The problem is just that a lot of the Tier 2 and Tier 3 schools (those ranked out of the top 100) don’t fit that description; instead, they will be a private law school (that thus charges private law school tuition) and are in metropolitan areas or states with several other higher ranked law schools and in those cases, a J.D. can be less valuable than the paper it is printed on.Compare that to what the legal community generally dubs the T-14, the top 14 schools in USNWR; students from those schools have a much easier and better time applying for jobs and can apply anywhere in the country they want because their schools are nationally known. There are also certain job opportunities, like clerking for a federal judge or getting an associate job at a big law firm in a large city, or even working for the more prestigious government agencies, like the DOJ, where going to a T-14 is not just helpful but almost required. You will frequently see job listings asking only for students from the top [xyz] schools who were in the top 1/3 of their class. (Personally, I find that to be a good screening tool for jobs I wouldn’t have wanted anyway, because they’re so obnoxious.) But notice, even at a T-14 school, you still need to be fairly high in your class (either top third or top 10% generally, depending on the job) to get the kinds of highly coveted positions that we’re talking about. So not even getting into a T-14 guarantees anything anymore. Though, of course, students who finish low in their classes at the T-14 schools still tend to have better landings then those who are lower in their classes at other schools, but they can still get cut out of the true “high-achieving” path. Then there’s another level of law school which I think both I and @artielu went to that goes from either 14 or 25 on the USNWR and ends at 75-100 or so, and those are what I dub “regional” schools in my brain. Those are schools where some of the students will end up in big firms while many will end up in smaller firms or local or state government. They tend to place far better in their own state or states nearby (hence “regional”) but may suffer from a lack of name recognition further away. But, the top students at these schools - especially if they have a great deal of internal motivation - can sometimes jump into what I’ve described as the T-14 track above. But students entering the regional schools frequently also face a lot of risk, because many of the schools are private and thus result in six-figures of student loan debt after graduation but with a lower chance of getting into “big law.” I think students thinking about going into that group of law school needs to have as clear of a vision as they can possibly get about not only why they want to be a lawyer, but what they want to do and how they can get there so that they can try to go to the school that most matches up with those goals. So in short, I think there are schools that are a good fit for everyone, but every “level” of schools has its plusses and its minuses. And if your goals don’t align with the positives of your law school, that’s when you can end up getting into trouble. So, once you’ve decided why you want to be a lawyer you then need to consider and how will or can this law school (or law schools) help me get to where I want to be. If you can’t align what you want from being a lawyer with a law school you can get into, I would suggest considering other professions where you can get the same outcomes in terms of experience and pay and everything without crippling debt and a degree that doesn’t match your life goals.@artielu, anything else you’d add or disagree with?

santhipoma replied to your photo “So, I’m in desperate need of a haircut and I’ve been sort of...”
doooo it!!! i chopped my hair off sunday to a kinda messy bob and it's weird but everyone loves it
That’s exciting. This would sort of be the opposite though because I’ve had a super short pixie cut (which I even occasionally had them buzz the left side because I liked it so short.) So growing my hair out is something I’m still a bit agnostic about because, on the one hand, there are way more fun things I can do with long hair.
But on the other hand (and this hand is heavily weighted,) I hate managing longer hair, especially since my hair gets so thick that it becomes a living nightmare. And yet, there’s still a part of me that would like to try growing it out again.
Meh, I’ll probably chicken out and just go with my usual pixie cut at the stylists but I’m going to think about it for awhile.

Miley never stated she was an addict and she has always talked about her drug usage as recreational. You're literally bashing her for NOT being an addict?? Also, the "hemsworth dick" part is sexist. Nothing about her behaviour now or back in 2015/2013 had anything to do with Liam.
Hey,
I feel like I should note that it is fair (and my brother also pointed out) that the coverage emphasizing her “going clean and sober” storyline is not necessarily her or the interview she gave and many my frustrations were not just Miley specific but also frustrated that I think the media reporting this makes it sound like someone in recovery, which may or may not come somewhat from Miley or her people.
I’m just also uncomfortable with the ways that celebrity news media covers addiction and recovery and I sort of think their response to that part of her interview is indicative of the bizarre approach they take to drugs and alcohol in general.
My bigger issue with Miley herself is that I do still feel that she was very public and performative in her pot use especially as an effort to be edgier and get past the “Hannah Montana” image. And in the same way, I think she’s doing it a bit again in reverse because, as it turns out, most of her fans have been less than comfortable wth her pot smoking, twerking, off the wall behaviors (whereas she got a hugely positive response to the Jolene cover which took her back to her “roots.”) I just thought the way she talked about it in the interview seemed a bit disingenuous, “oh look at this great thing I did” and somewhat played into the stereotype that being sober is about willpower as opposed to a chemical imbalance in someone’s brain. Again, as I said in my post, I have no idea what Miley’s actual smoking and drinking habits were, but I just don’t think that you tell someone about this a whole *three weeks* into doing it unless you are trying to make a splash and get attention.
And you can say many things about Miley but you can not say that her career has not been well-managed and that her publicist is terrific. I really don’t believe that she would have brought this up just on a whim; I think she did so purposefully and strategically to begin rehabbing her reputation and public image (even if she didn’t ned rehab for herself) and I just am not comfortable with the way she expressed it and that the announcement seemed less about cleaning up her body and health and more about cleaning up her media coverage and people’s opinions of her.
And I will cop to the fact that the Hemsworth comment was kind of bitchy but I do think that the periods of her life where Miley has “cleaned up her act” most as an adult has been the times when she is together with Liam. So yeah, it was a crude way of describing that, so I’ll take your comment as a fair point.

that running bear video combines well with the latest florida news circulating - gators can climb fences. so we can't outrun bears and can't outclimb either. why go outside
Because puppies and babies are there?
But seriously, people are always talking about how scary the animals in Austrailia are and, like, have they been to Florida? All you need to know about Florida is that our tour guide freaking casually would feed marshmallows to gators to get them to come over to the tour group so we could “see” them (which I guess is actually a terrible idea but what did I know. And that it’s not at all unusual to find a gator literally in your swimming pool in your backyard. And that literally JUST talking about the Gators.

The Grand Canyon is usually warm and I know it sounds a little tacky but you can water raft from the top to the bottom and it's the most beautiful place I've every been
Anon! Thank you for your advice; Monotasker and I actually went to the Grand Canyon as part of a west coast road trip we did two or three years ago. We started in San Francisco, went to Yosemite for four days, drove and spent a day in Monterrey (omg the aquarium), drove down through Big Sur on Route 1 until we got to Santa Maria and then we turned inland and stayed the night at a little B&B in a town called Pine Mountain Club (which is a really bizarre name for a town, btw.)
After that, we headed east and drove to Flagstaff (which was one of my first experiences with the desert) and then visited the Grand Canyon the next day. The morning after our Grand Canyon visit, we made the frankly MIND BLOWING drive from the Grand Canyon to Moab, Utah where we stayed while we visited Arches National Park. [Side note: I had gotten so severely dehydrated somehow at that point that I was spiking fevers and generally doings *not well* so I got to add the Moab ER to my collection of ERs I’ve visited around the world.]
Unfortunately, we only really had one day to visit Arches (and we only saw Canyonlands in passing) but it was one of the most beautiful, fascinating, and alien places I’ve ever been. I fell completely in love.
After finishing up at Arches, we drove to Denver where we stayed for a couple days and then flew home.
So...all this is to say that I have actually visited the Grand Canyon and it is spectacular, but I think if I were going to go back out that way, I would want to visit Arches and Canyonlands again and maybe see Zion. Utah is totally an underrated tourist destination y’all (even Salt Lake City is pretty cool.)
But, despite all that, a flight out to Utah or Arizona is really farther than we want to travel. But good idea Anon, thanks!
If you want to see pictures of my travels, search the tag “TCFKAG takes pictures” on my blog - it includes lots of great photos from our west coast trip.

Who doesn’t love it when anonymous hate requires an Urban Dictionary search? (Though I can’t say the search was overly illuminating, but I *think* I’m being called a vegetarian feminist and personally, I find that offensive, I don’t have NEARLY the self-control (or bowel health) required to be a vegetarian.)

I don't know if you know this but Leslie is actually leaving Hamilton, Daveed is staying on as TJ/Lafayette so YAY FOR THAT!
Oh crap, I did know that and the embarrassing thing is that it was just because I got Daveed Diggs and Leslie Odom confused in my brain (i.e. I knew it was Aaron Burr who was leaving but wrote the wrong name.)
Apologies to both of them and I’ll edit the names. But everything I said also applies to Daveed - his work in the show is quite close to miraculous and I can’t wait to see all the projects he does from now on.
I blame their shared appearance on Law and Order...even though that makes now sense, but I totally blame it on that.
