When, I truly felt sorry for Arnav Singh Raizada.
Arnav Singh Raizada. A mere character from an indian T.V series which only ran for about 1 year and 9 months. I know, it's been 12 years, but I don't understand this love that I have felt for this series at all. Maybe, because, there's a connection that this series' characters create with their audience? Dunno.
Here's a moment, that lasts with me to this day. When I could see a naked Battle between Arnav Singh Raizada and ASR. Beautifully depicted, when he was suddenly made a host to Preeto's wedding.
HE WAS GUILTY
Tumblr media
He was reminded of the day he married his wife. A day where all of her relationships were put on a test, when he became a Rakshas who ordered her to be his captive. The day about which her girl friends asked, and Khushi lied. She lied that she looked beautiful that day, she lied that her ornaments were pretty, she lied about her favourite coloured lehenga, she lied that her wedding was her most beautiful day.
Arnav didn't want to be reminded of his mercilessness. He didn't want to be the prosecutor that Khushi believes he is.
HE WAS REMINDED OF
Tumblr media
Rummaging through his stuff, looking for his file in a scattered room. Wondering, if his crazy wife has kept it hidden somewhere. He looked at a drawer, a glittery sheet peeking out. "Pagal hai..." A slight smirk on his face, disappears when he sees a reality that he keeps at the back of his mind but, tends to forget. A slip on it says, to Khushi ji, with love from, Shyam.
Reminding him, that she doesn't feel for him, reminding him that she is a betrayal. A vile woman that he fell for. And still is a moth to her flame.
Khushi came inside the room. She asked him if he was going to come outside to meet everyone. But, like always, she became the fodder to his rage. "isse pehle mai kuch kru, dafa ho jao yaha se"
HE WAS ENRAGED
Tumblr media
What was he gonna do? Belittle her? Insult her again? Or this time, he wanted to grab her tight to shout at her not caring if her family listens. Whatever it was, he was in no mood. He threw her out of her room.
It's always him that is entitled to a place to stay, it's Khushi who needs to get lost whether it's his room or even if it's her own room. That's how it works with ASR. He wasn't going to stay here. He was calling a car to go back.
Avoiding a scene in front of her mother, Khushi leaves, Arnav was packing up when he listens to the worries of the bride's mother. He was interested, interested in the pettiness of the family that Preeto was going to get married into.
Khushi was trying to appease the Classist Mama and Mami of the groom. Until Arnav agressively says "Khushi chup ho jao". Maybe, he didn't want Khushi to appease them? But, it gets countered when Arnav next says "Jao dusri ice cream leke ao" when groom's mama ji says "aap apni biwi ko samjhaye ki bado se kaise baat krte hai" Arnav replies "Koshish karunga" I don't know what to say about this. I think he didn't even try to protect his wife here, he had bigger plans after this. What do you guys think he was trying to do by telling Khushi to shutup?
Khushi was arguing with Arnav for his uncalled rude behaviour and compares him to their ungrateful guests.
HE WAS A HERO
Tumblr media
Arnav tells the groom to man up. Fires him, tells him to stand up for his wife to be, in his ASR way of talking. The groom realised this and stands up for Preeto and her family. Arnav saved the day.
Everyone danced, including his wife. His now, ex employee invites him to dace, Arnav complies.
HE FOUND HIS WAY TO HIS WIFE
Tumblr media
What will a man do if he found himself in a sea of strangers dancing? He would find his way to his wife. He watched Khushi dancing and found his refuge. Obviously, a husband will follow his wife if he was to avoid any awkwardness. Dancing by his wife could save him from bearing his awkwardness alone. His wife was his obvious partner. Someone gave him a slight push and he collided with his wife. A Rabba ve happens, eye lock happens but, this time. Khushi and Arnav both were complaining to each other. Conflict obvious in their eyes.
Khushi saw the groom talking to Arnav about how he made him realise that he should man up. Arnav talked sense to him, and Khushi was left wondering, Arnav doesn't practice what he preaches. Within a moment he fills her with love, and the next, hates her.
HE WAS GUILTY AGAIN
Tumblr media
A mother is always worrying about her kids. Garima, wanted assurance from Khushi, that she is happy with her husband. Khushi makes up a lie. Lie about her happily ever after. Arnav, is wise, he takes care of her loved ones, he gets hurt when she is in pain, he never lets her do anything by herself, she gets whatever she wants without even asking, he was the best husband.
HE WAS SORRY
Tumblr media
The events have been a roller coaster ride for Arnav. He was feeling sorry for Khushi because, he couldn't give her the best wedding, he was mad at his wife for betraying him, then he tried to save her family's face, then he felt sorry for her again because, he couldn't be the best husband.
Now, in the pale moonlight he was left with his turmoil. He was left with conflicting emotions. He was not being nice to her. Didn't he always feel that way? Being rude to her and regretting it after? Wasn't his wife his worst enemy? Then why was he feeling so much for today?
IN THIS LOVE, NOTHING ELSE MATTERS.
Tumblr media
When he was Ranjha, he admitted, he admitted that, regardless of everything that she did, he couldn't help but love her.
He didn't want to love her, but, watching her cocoon inside her blanket because of cold, he turned off the AC. He layed besides her, looked at her innocent face lit by the moonlight. She was sleeping peacefully now. He put his hand in her. Held it lovingly as if saying "I am sorry Khushi". And slept watching her.
. . . . . . .
What's amazing about this episode is that, even after watching her worst possible avatar. He was capable of holding her on to himself. He was capable of loving someone, even if they have hurt him. He could not forgive her but, he could sure still want her. He was not someone, who could let go of his strong emotions so easily. His love was bigger than anything, any mistakes, any sins and any relationship. Just like he said during second marriage.
Mere pyar ko kisi suboot ki zaroorat nhi hai.
Or wakai mai nhi hai, haina?

Picture for a second that you are one (1) Dr. Dayal Thakur. Unmarried, in your mid to late 40s. A successful surgeon about to depart for America in a short period time. One day your car crashes into a girl while she was being chased by violent assailants. She would have almost certainly died if it weren't for your medical expertise and her frighteningly strong will to survive. Now this girl you rescued, she is out for blood. She wants to kill a man. She wants to topple an empire. She wants to take down the most powerful family in all of Kolkata. You listen to her horrific, unjust backstory and decide, 'Fuck it, this is my child now'. You take your newly adopted daughter, whom you grow to love very much with all of your heart as if you had always been her father, to America where she spends the next two years coming up with an insane plan to take down the Goenka corporate empire. She also convinces herself that she is Just Like the goddess Durga and that it's her divine mission in life to destroy the evil-doers who killed her family. Not only do you go along with her ploy, you actively encourage her in her pursuit for vengeance. On the days when she feels like she can't go on you assure her that she is Just Like the goddess Durga and that this is her divine mission in life which she can't back down from. You use your position as a most outstanding surgeon, who is about found a mega cancer research institute, to allow her whatever resources she needs to enact her schemes and willingly participate as a chess piece in her grand plot. Also you take care of her when she injures herself during various espionages and buy her little gifts when she is feeling down and she constantly fusses over your health and bakes you little goodies that you can safely eat with your high blood sugar and the two of you are the world's most content little family.

Rant time!!!!!!!!!
Can anyone explain to me why the cheating trope is so popular in current Indian/desi television? WHAT is the freaking appeal of it for mass audiences that practically every tv show sooner or later launches into this storyline IRRESPECTIVE of what their original show plot was???
And the thing about a cheating storyline is, when it is treated with nuance and respect, it can actually be very compelling. Like, on a personal, totally subjective level, I am NOT a fan of this trope. But, I will get into a love triangle, give it a fair chance, if I see a storyline with three fully fleshed out characters with distinct motivations related to their psychology, their personality, their desires. The angst of falling in love with another person while in a committed relationship, if explored without letting people off the hook for immoral actions, can actually be a very interesting. Duty/responsibility vs love/lust. What does it take to make an angel fall. Etc.
But nuance? Who is she? Certainly nowhere to be found in these shows. They have the most basic, fucked up version of the cheating trope, cheating used for drama, cheating to generate emotional torture situations, cheating the way a 15 yr old would understand it. When handled carelessly, its so easy to slip into either a victim-blaming or other-woman shaming narrative with the cheating trope. And, OF COURSE THE MAN (USUALLY THE CHEATER) ALWAAAYS GETS OFF SCOT FREE WITH THE CLEANEST CHARACTER CERTIFICATE BC BOOHOO HIS MANLY HORMONES BOOHOO DIDN’T MEAAAANNNNN TOOOO BOOHOO HE STILL LOVES HER.
THAT is the crux of the issue: these shows want to have their cake and eat it too. They want an other woman we instantly hate, but they don’t want us to hate the man who betrays his wife for her. They want to show an epic, pure, for-the-ages love, the romance novel tropey love, where two star crossed lovers fight through a sea of problems and even with their own damn selves to find their way together. And then they insert the cheating/betrayal as simply another melodramatic obstacle that doesn’t, in any way, dint the character of the cheater or cast a negative light on their OH SO GREAT love story.
We as the audience are expected to continue rooting with all our heart for the couple to get back and stay together. We’re supposed to cheer the virtuous wife on as she “fights” to get “her man” back. Or, hate her for anything she does in anger as a response to the cheating. We’re supposed to despise the other woman for being an immoral villain, practically criminal at times, for “stealing the man”, but never hate the man for being stolen lol.
We’re supposed to ALWAYS sympathize with the cheating man, even while he is cheating with the heroine’s sister/best friend/bully/attempted murderer/all of the above; even as he dumps/or is dumped by the heroine, and even as he is “stuck” in the secondary relationship while “loyally” pining for the heroine. He is never the one to hate, even for a second!
To which I say: FUCK YOU AND NO.
/end rant

Things I would have "modified" if I were an IPKKND writer. (Not change it but modify it) part - 1
IPKKND is one of the finest tv shows written. It was beautifully directed, thoughtfully written and had the best cast. It was like all the stars were alligned in a perfect constellation for this show, but still it could do better. Here, are some things I would have modified in order to make more sense of the scenarios.
Made khushi an actual model to land in Arnav's arms.
Tumblr media
Now, people might be wondering that it's too far fetched and will change the story overall. No, It won't. But how?
My version: Khushi actually had a small modelling gig in sheesh mehal that day, the plan was simple, completing her gig during the day and attend payal's wedding by the night. Sheesh mehal was near Abhishek's house so she carried the file with herself. She was dressed in traditional attire, with hint of green, pink and RED, trying to find her way out of the hotel (Now, turned into a raizada asset) suddenly, she was pushed to the ramp by the designer because, she definitely looked like a model as she wore flashy lehenga (Sanaya is tall and slender). And what happens afterwards we all know. Arnav's suspicions will only get strong because, Khushi was actually a freelancing model.
This slight modification, would have helped the story further for Khushi getting forced to shoot as a replacement for Lisa and Mrs. India track.
Afterall, Arnav was not foolish enough to assign a modeling task to a random girl who knows nothing about shoots.
*khushi was a model with reservations Ethnic wear only.
2. Given Khushi an actual Job in Delhi
Tumblr media
i am sorry, but being a 15 day employee and a Bahu maker isn't an actual job.
My version : Khushi, because she is a freelancing model will find it difficult to get a modeling assignment in a new location like Delhi. She can't shoot for short clothes or lingerie so she tried to get a job. So, she applied for an opening in AR office. She met Arnav, it became a Chaos and she took the 15 days challenge and left when Arnav crossed all limits. After she quit she found some modelling gigs for sarees and suits. Anjali came one day and told Khushi to groom Lavanya. She would train her from 9-3 pm and would find her modeling gigs after. Delhi had more work prospects.
3. No, Arnav did not Give meaningless tasks to Khushi. Also, extend office track
Tumblr media
My version: Arnav actually gave Khushi the sort of work he would give to an Officeboy or a Clerk. He would challenge her with tasks that require English proficiency and quantitative aptitude with logical reasoning. Anything that can be done by an educated person. Maybe he would take her with him as a PA for a day (just to test her nerves) or overwork her.
This actually has a lot of scope because, Khushi didn't have a fixed position in the office. He could tell her to study some graphs, prepare a report merely by looking at some data, collecting some file from another AR office or becoming his PA for a day.
*note: I loved that dictation that Arnav gave to khushi. I was expecting something similar to that. Also, I don't mind that Rainy parking duty.
4. Endorsed AR designs more in the show.
Tumblr media
my version : The show never really highlighted this brand. They could have shown that Arnav wears clothes by AR designs or he got some exclusive item of AR designs as gift for Mami Ji. It would have been interesting if we could get to see another ramp show by AR designs or seen Arnav giving a party or organising an event by AR designs for business purposes. Arnav looking at designs, his understanding of fabrics, cultural attires and fashion sense could have been highlighted. Like @jalebi-weds-bluetooth said, Lavanya could have worn AR designs rather than Motilal dresswala. C'mon. It would have reduced the costing of setting up another location for Motilal honestly, just the office would have done.
5. Khushi could give some words of wisdom to Raizada household when they tried to Change Lavanya.
Tumblr media
My version: Khushi wouldn't immediately try to train Lavanya, rather assessing the situation she realised that neither ASR nor La had intensions of getting married. Khushi could have told Nani ji or Anjali that they should not force anything on Lavanya.
Dialogues:
"Maaf kijiyega Nani ji, chhota muh Badi baat keh rhe hai, lekin hum ko lagta hai ki, jab lavanya ji or wo laad gav....maaf kijiye, ASR agar shadi hi nhi Karna Chahte, to Hum Lavanya ji ko bhi kyu aise badalne ko keh rhe hai?"
"Lavanya ji ki parvarish aisi nhi Hui hai ki unko Ghar ke chhote mote kaam krne ki zarurat pade, or aisi hi Lavanya kashyap se ASR pyar krte hai"
"Hum Lavanya ji ko badal bhi de agar, par kya ASR apne aap ko badlenge? Or nahi badal skte to lavanya ji ke saath Aisa kyu ho rha hai?"
After hearing such things Nani ji and anjali actually positively motivate lavanya to consider marriage and when Lavanya finally understands, Khushi comes into play. Not trying to teach Lavanya kashyap how to cook, but rather, how to have a Classy behaviour in a joint family and how to carry herself gracefully in traditional way. Something or two about religion and Cooking and stuff shall come later.
6. No, Khushi didn't hit her head in Arnav's car and no, Arnav definitely did not think about Driving from Delhi to Nainital.
Tumblr media
Delhi to Nainital is too long of a journey to drive. It makes no sense especially when Arnav is driving on his own.
Mr version: Arnav would drive to a nearby location, like Chandigarh or Ambala. How can we possibly take khushi with Arnav alone? We won't. Rather because, Khushi took out some air from from his car tire, he couldn't travel too far but, almost 4 hours far. Lavanya was bearing the consequences of her spa and didn't go with Arnav, Khushi heard Anjali talking to Arnav who said:
"Di I can't believe it, but I have a bloody flat tyre"
"Now, I am stuck at this and that location"
Khushi feeling guilty for her activities Will go with driver Mohan. Upon meeting Arnav, she would make some excuse for why she came. While heading back, the auto strike goes worse and a riot breaks out, immediate orders are passed by govt. And article 144 is imposed. Jamming the way. Mohan, Khushi and Arnav are stuck. Then rest of the story can be continued from Dhaba location.
But, how would khushi change her clothes into lehenga? She Don't have to do that. There are tons of other reasons for Khushi to be attacked by goons. To make Arnav stay at Dhaba, she can pretend to be his wife.
*note: Taking out petrol from the car is too difficult, one can do that in a bike not cars. Arnav, didn't carry a stepney. It would have been so funny if Khushi would have said "aap bina stepney k gaadi chalate hai?" "Hum araam se apka tyre badal dete"
