Shamans the world over must undergo initiatory ecstasy to manifest their call to office and to validate their vocation and supernatural power to themselves and to their society (Eliade 1964-:35). South American shamans also undergo ritual ordination and experience symbolic death, both essential stations on the arduous road to shamanism on the continent as elsewhere. Familiarity with death as a gateway to life on a different plane of existence is what sets the shaman apart from the average person. Thus, shamans arc frequent travelers across the threshold between life and death and, beginning with the initiatory "dismemberment" and contemplation of their own "death," they "die" repeat-edly in the course of their praxis.

I recently drew this graphic for the poster of a Festival that I will be Live-Painting at, in Costa Rica during the solar Eclipse of 2023. I was inspired by the tribal and shamanic aspects of that beautiful land, but this image also carries the fierce vibe of the process I’ve been going through. The path of “Shamanism” can be easily misunderstood, as it’s like walking on the razor’s edge between light and dark, between enlightenment and madness. Enough warriors have fallen on the “wrong” side. This path is definitely more than “doing drugs in nature” and not all sunshine and rainbows. It’s about hard inner work to face your demons and purge them out. It’s about healing our traumas and coming closer to the heart of the original God Source. As much as this path has beat me up at points, I am so grateful for all the medicine and true upgrades it’s brought into my life! We are so blessed to still have intact ancestral plant medicine traditions. Kuntanawa – Heart of the Boa Rapé
This Rapé was made with organic Moi, Mapacho, ashes of the Sapota tree and a vine called “heart of the boa constrictor” because of its heart shaped leaves. The vine is also known as “Veia de Pajé” (Pajé=medicine man – shaman).
In the words of the maker, this is a very reserved and powerful blend. For that reason those who use this medicine must do so with clarity and intention, in order to achieve the spiritual alchemy in a good dimension. In their tradition the medicine is known to keep at bay the negative and attract the positive. It is used to protect against jealousy and spiritual persecution. Most of the medicines used in Rapé are also used to make herbal baths and medicinal teas. This particular one is used to attract good things, love, and success hunting and in general to bring luck and prosperity? However it is advised to firm and focus the mind on the good intentions that one wants to achieve and not call what one doesn´t want.

Una delle cose più importanti che ho appreso dalla medicina ancestrale amazzonica è il potere del vomitare.
Il vomitare ti purifica dalle cose negative che hai assunto e che sono dentro di te. Cibo intossicato, sangue avvelenato, idee tossiche, modi di pensare tossici, memorie tossiche. Tirarlo fuori ha un incredibile effetto sulla salute, fisica mentale e chi dice pure spirituale. Kambo, ayahuasca, rapè, yopo, tabacco (nicotiana rusticana) fanno tutte vomitare per purificarti. E questi sono tutti gli strumenti dello sciamano per guarire.
Per questo scrivo di quello che mi è appena successo: devo vomitare per non farmi avvelenare.
Questo mese ho organizzato la venuta del mio sciamano peruviano a trovarmi per condividere la sua medicina con gli amici europei che lui ha fatto nel suo lavoro di curandero in Perù.
Questo signore si chiama Don Gardel: faccia da indigeno, grande sorriso e vestito con quelli che sono i vestiti più eleganti che tiene. Si perchè a Gradel piace avere belle scarpe (da 20 euri) e belle camicie. Io lo prendo in giro dicendogli che è pitucco, che vuol dai giusti eleganti. In Iquitos, una delle capitali in perù della ayahuasca, è un curandero conosciuto. Ma quello che più importa, perchè di sciamani ce ne sono fin troppi. Lui è un uomo di cuore. Un uomo della giungla, gentile, generoso.
Per questo lavoro con lui dopo essere stato con molti sciamani. Era l’unico che donava la medicina gratis agli abitanti del villaggio, e accettava qualsiasi turista anche i saccopelisti con pochi soldi. Infatti qui a Barcellona avevamo un posto dove dormire in un occupacion (casa occupata) dove viveva uno dei giovani che era stato con lui nella giungla. Don Gradel è un uomo curioso e era ben felice di venire in europa a conoscere questo mondo. Non è facile trovare persone dalla mentalità aperta come lui laggiù nella giungla. Ecco, questo uomo è stato cacciato indietro questa mattina dopo 5 giorni di detenzione come immigrato illegale in Europa con l'impossibilità di rientrare per 6 mesi. In questi 5 giorni il pover'uomo che non conosce il francese o l’inglese, si trovava privato del suo cellulare e impossibilitato a contattare i suoi amici qui. Vorrei che vi immaginaste che Don Gardel è come un bambino nella nostra società: I documenti che l’ambasciata di spagna gli aveva indicato a Lima a suo figlio, non sembravano sufficienti. Immaginatevi Don Gardel ha pure perso la sua mail, perché poverino che cazzo sa cosa è una google mail. E dove era il biglietto elettronico? Gli agenti non sono riusciti a trovare nessuna partenza da barcellona. Perché era da Milano. Ops. Al Fresco! Chiuso. Senza telefono senza capire la lingua e nessuno che lo può aiutare. Con un gruppo di amici francesi, organizziamo di riuscire a parlare con Gardel. Per capire un po’ la situazione. La situazione era un mostro poliforme e in continuo cambiamento. Tanto che stamattina, dopo che pago un legale esperto nell’aiuto dei clandestini che mi racconta che è la cosa migliore è andare là io direttamente a prenderlo. Fino ad ora non eravamo mai riusciti a parlare con una persona competente che ci spiegasse il problema. Ok. Assicurazione. Fatto in internet in 5 minuti. Ha bisogno di dimostrare che ha abbastanza soldi per vivere: 65 euro al giorno. Dopo qualche traversia per dimostrare al telefono che la mia identità corrispondesse a quella del mio passaporto. Il tutto in un caffè di Barcellona. Comunque fatto. Western Union e Don Gardel ha i soldi a suo nome. Ha bisogno di dimostrare un alloggiamento per tutto il periodo. Nessun problema. Un amico koreano direttore di un ostello a Barcellona, mi lascia una stanza per gardel e mi fa avere i documenti di pagamento e di alloggiamento fino al giorno prima di partire. Sembra tutto. Ma niente sembra aiutare l’amico. No. Non basta. Ci vuole la prenotazione fino al giorno del volo, anche se quel giorno sei in aereo (???). No problem. Internet. Prenotazione fatta. Qualcosa ancora manca. Comunicare con Don Gardel è impossibile: ci sono 3 telefoni nei luoghi di detenzione e bisogna trovare qualcuno che risponda e te lo passi, in più ogni 2 minuti la conversazione cade. Immaginatevi cosa vuol dire comunicare in queste condizioni. Gardel aveva informazioni confuse ed era spaventato. Aveva paura. Non era nella sua selva dove poteva dormire di notte senza problemi. Non capiva ed era sempre più confuso dai suoi amici prigionieri colombiani. Le medicine che don Gardel portava erano legali in Spagna e proprio per questo avevamo scelto Barcellona come soluzione più comoda. Però ora lui era all'aeroporto di cambio di Parigi. In Francia. E li non lo sono. E immaginatevi chi sono i compagni colombiani si Gardel? Lo spaventano parlandogli di droghe illegali e di quanti anni si sta in prigione. La paura sale. E il tempo passa. Ricevo nuova informazione che in realtà sono 100 euro al giorno. Dopo 4 giorni Don Gardel doveva avere un processo per immigrazione clandestina. Con un avvocato che non ho mai potuto contattare. Solo a notte tarda dopo il processo potei conversare a due minuti per volta con Gradel. Era depresso e spaventato. I documenti di prenotazione sembravano non bastare e sembrare fasulli. Il giudice lo ha minacciato di ‘macchiare’ il suo passaporto se non fosse partito il giorno successivo. L’ultima notte mangiando cibo per cani. Don Gardel decide di tornare a Lima con tutta la sua medicina.
Questa mattina depresso all’ennesima minaccia della polizia, perché legalmente hai un mese di tempo prima di essere rimpatrio forzato, è ripartito per Lima.
Sono ancora scioccato quando chiedo ad uno dei detenuti di passarmi Gardel, e lui mi risponde che è stato rimpatriato questa mattina presto.
Più che incredulo sono incazzato. In Europa avevamo la possibilità di incontrare un vero curandero del perù, che lo faceva senza scopi di lucro, ma di condividere la sua Medicina che è anche la sua vita. Visitare i suoi vecchi pazienti e farne di nuovi. E i nostri ospitanti non erano solo mochilleros senza soldi ma anche professionisti e addirittura un sindaco di spagna. In Francia ci aspettavano due interviste con due riviste sulle culture indigene e le sostanze psicotrope. E tutto questo non può avvenire perché Don Gardel è un uomo della giungla che ha perso l’accesso alla sua mail e che viaggia senza carta di credito e senza cash.
La nostra società è talmente malata che ha rigettato la sua medicina. Abbiamo cacciato un dottore con più di quaranta anni di esperienza.
Così succede spesso con le medicine sciamaniche, a quelli che non vogliono realmente guarire non fa niente. Ci sono persone la cui identificazione con quella che loro chiamano malattia è talmente forte da minacciare l'omeostasi del sistema corpo-mente, per loro la medicina non funziona. Viene rigettata, senza che possa essere assimilata. In questi casi ci vuole un lavoro subdolo: la microdose.

Una settimana dopo in Italia hanno tolto il diritto ai culti che usano l’ayahuasca come sacramento il suo utilizzo.

It’s funny, every time I feel that I’ve reached the top of a mountain, I can only gain sight that there are bigger mountains right behind it. In the same way, every time I feel like I’ve purged out all of my demons, the Grandmother Medecine finds an even deeper engrained one to release. Those become such hard battles with childhood and ancestral wounds that reside to go. I am so grateful to have such a strong support system in this current retreat at @katari.ayahuasca.center ! My teacher @herbert_quinteros has helped me so much over the last 7 years. My art students also become my healers too, especially @alignandshinekauai who has literally helped me pull a couple of pesky energy suckers from my energetically c body. She has also helped me so much on the astral plane so I already count her as a lifelong ally! One step at a time and one ceremony at a time I get closer to who I really am: pure unconditional Love.
